This was the last of five films which Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth made together. It was a sign of the times that, whereas Hayworth had always been top-billed over Ford in their earlier films, for this film she was third-billed behind Ford and relative newcomer Elke Sommer.
Robert Mitchum was originally offered the lead by MGM. His son James Mitchum has a supporting role. Robert Ryan and Sterling Hayden were also offered leading roles.
This film was released in Britain as the lower half of a double-bill with "Lady L". It was cut by 12 minutes, although this footage was restored when it was first shown on British television.
