After revealing the official title of Avatar 3 at D23 last week, director James Cameron spoke with Entertainment Weekly to explain the meaning behind Avatar: Fire and Ash.
“It took a long time to come up with a title that I felt resonated with what’s in the film,” Cameron said. “I don’t think I could say too much about it until you actually see the film and you see what it means, but if you think of fire as hatred, anger, violence, that sort of thing, and ash is the aftermath. So what’s the aftermath? Grief, loss, right? And then what does that cause in the future? More violence, more anger, more hatred. It’s a vicious cycle. So that’s the thinking.“
Although Fire and Ash leads one to think of apocalyptic imagery, Cameron wouldn’t necessarily call it a dark film. “I think it goes to...

James Cameron agreed with director Roland Emmerich that he is, indeed, overbearing. The “Avatar” filmmaker pushed back on this being a criticism when asked by The Hollywood Reporter about Emmerich’s decision to drop out of directing a “Fantastic Voyage” remake in 2007, which Cameron wrote a draft of and remains attached to as a producer.
“How is this a headline?” he probed.
During Collider’s Directors on Directing panel at Comic-Con, Emmerich cited Cameron’s “overbearing” behavior in the development process of the remake as his reason for leaving the project.
“I’ve never said anything negative about Roland,” Cameron said. “But anyway: Yes, I’m overbearing. Damn right. When it’s a project where I’ve contributed to the writing, I might actually have an opinion on it.”

At 69 years old, James Cameron is still one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood. This past weekend, new details about the third film in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire & Ash, debuted at Disney’s D23 conference. The details teased what’s next for the Na’vi and what wonders fans can expect when the special-effects-driven spectacle takes cinemas by storm. Miraculously, Cameron found time in his busy schedule to engage in a rapid-fire chat with The Hollywood Reporter about upcoming projects, rumors, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, his tendency to be “overbearing,” and more.
Digging into a project that Cameron isn’t directly involved in but has his stamp of approval is Netflix’s Terminator Zero TV series. The series stars Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, Ann Dowd, and André Holland. The show chronicles the rise of Skynet and Malcolm Lee’s mission to invent a counter-program to prevent the apocalypse.

Independence Day director Roland Emmerich was once in place to direct Fantastic Voyage, but says he departed due to the ‘overbearing’ manner of producer James Cameron.
Writer-producer James Cameron said in April that his long-in-the-works remake of Fantastic Voyage is still happening – but we can be sure that Roland Emmerich won’t be directing it.
The Independence Day director made this abundantly clear during a San Diego Comic-Con panel, in which he revealed that he was involved in the project at one stage but left due to Cameron’s ‘overbearing’ personality.
“James Cameron is very overbearing,” Emmerich told fellow filmmaker Louis Leterrier in Collider’s Directors on Directing panel. “And so I, at one point, just gave up. Because it’s like, ‘Is it your movie or my movie?'”

If you were a film fan growing up in the ‘90s/early-‘00s, you’re very familiar with the work of Roland Emmerich. We’re talking movies like “Universal Soldier,” “Stargate,” “The Patriot,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and, of course, “Independence Day.” And at one point, he was signed on to do a remake of “Fantastic Voyage.” Unfortunately, he was to work with James Cameron on that project, and let’s just say, their personalities didn’t mesh well.

For many filmmakers, the 1966 science fiction film “Fantastic Voyage,” which follows a shrunken submarine crew who travel into the body of an ailing scientist in order to heal him, is the holy grail of untapped IP. Directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass, and Shawn Levy have all expressed interest in helming a new vision of the material, but none have managed to make it happen. However, almost 20 years ago “Independence Day” and “The Day After Tomorrow”-helmer Roland Emmerich was given a chance to crack “Fantastic Voyage” for Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron. Or at least so he thought.
At Comic-Con this weekend, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich was speaking with Antoine Fuqua for Collider’s Directors on Directing event when he was asked about his involvement in a remake via a video question from “Now You See Me” director Louis Leterrier.

Roland Emmerich found James Cameron "very overbearing" when they attempted to collaborate.Emmerich, 68, had been interested in directing the remake of the 1966 film 'Fantastic Voyage' that Cameron, 69, is producing but admitted he dropped out of the project because he found Cameron too difficult to deal with.Speaking during Collider’s Directors on Directing event at San Diego Comic-Con, he said: "James Cameron is very overbearing, and so I, at one point, just gave up. Because it’s like, ‘Is it your movie or my movie?'"We were in very beginning stages. Because I said, ‘Gosh, why is he so overbearing?’ I have to say, I do my stuff, and when I can’t do my stuff, I’m totally not interested. As simple as that. So when somebody else wants to say something to me and is more powerful than me, I drop out."The 1966 sci-fi movie...

It’s safe to say that Roland Emmerich and James Cameron aren’t likely to collaborate anytime soon.
During a conversation between filmmakers Emmerich and Antoine Fuqua at San Diego Comic-Con, director Louis Leterrier appeared via video to ask Emmerich about the long-gestating remake of the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage that Cameron has been trying to get off the ground. Leterrier mentioned that he would still love to get to direct the film and asked Emmerich about his experience years ago with the project.

While James Cameron has been intensely busy with his “Avatar” sequels, the filmmaker has been developing many projects over the years concurrently over at 20th Century Studios. One of those is a sequel to “Alita: Battle Angel” that he’s been speaking with Disney and Robert Rodriguez about—logistics such as budget and platform, surely part of the conversation. At the same time, Cameron’s been working on another long-gestating project, a remake of the classic 1966 film “Fantastic Voyage,” which he had nearly directed himself.

The long-gestating sci-fi remake of Fantastic Voyage, which could pair James Cameron with Guillermo del Toro, is still on the cards, according to the Avatar director.
According to James Cameron, his long-gestating remake of Fantastic Voyage is still happening. That in itself is newsworthy given how long Cameron has been talking about this project. The filmmaker wrote a screenplay for the film decades ago, but in the wake of Titanic's success in 1997, he became transfixed with realising the alien world of Pandora onscreen and with the exception of a couple of documentary films, has only released two Avatar films in the quarter century since.
As far as Fantastic Voyage goes, Cameron’s plan has long been to produce the film, with Gullermo del Toro being the man to direct it. We’ve seen Cameron ‘godfather’ films before while working on the never-ending production of the Avatar films, not least...

If "Rocky" is for Boomers and Gen-Xers and "Creed" is for Millennials, then what is the boxing film of choice for Generation Z? One could argue it's "Real Steel." Yes, really.
Released in 2011, the Hugh Jackman-led sci-fi film is loosely based on "Steel," a short story written by Richard Matheson in the 1950s and one that was previously adapted into an episode of "The Twilight Zone" in 1963. Yet, the film itself was very much meant for families -- including then kiddie-aged Gen-Zers -- when it opened in theaters. It would proceed to top the charts on Netflix almost a decade later when the world was on lockdown in 2020, at which point it became apparent just how much of a lasting imprint Jackman's surprisingly heartfelt boxing robots flick had left on the public's consciousness.

While their upcoming movies may not have had panels at 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, Gareth Edwards and Justin Simien, who respectively have sci-fi thriller Creator and Disney’s Haunted Mansion hitting theaters in the coming weeks, managed to give their projects a spotlight, despite the ongoing actors and writers strikes.

The filmmakers, who were part of a Directors on Directing panel hosted by film website Collider, were in Hall H on Disney’s dime, as they repeated several times, and tried to behave as best as they could when moderator Steven Weintraub asked a couple of thorny questions about marketing and studio notes.

Jim Brown, the NFL Hall of Famer and Civil Rights activist who turned to acting and appeared in films and TV shows ranging from The Dirty Dozen and I Spy to Draft Day, Mars Attacks! and The A-Team, died Thursday night in Los Angeles. His wife, Monique Brown, said in an Instagram post that he died peacefully, but she did not provide a cause.
Brown is considered among the greatest football players of all time. Drafted sixth overall in 1957 by the Cleveland Browns out of Syracuse University, his bruising running style redefined the running back position. As a rookie, he ran for 237 yards in a game against the Los Angeles Rams — a record that would stand until the 1970s.

The latest film by the directors of Leviathan combines disorientating, brutal surgery closeups with doctors’ candid chats to powerful effect
Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel are the French documentary film-makers who in 2012 gave us Leviathan, an experimental and immersively strange account of life on a fishing trawler in the north Atlantic. In 2017 their Somniloquies was a hallucinatory, image-driven film about sleep-talking, while Caniba was about the notorious Japanese murderer and cannibal Issei Sagawa and the strange half-life of his later years, when he was immobilised by a cerebral infarction.
Their new film does for the human body what Leviathan did for the alien world of the sea: an account of surgical and clinical procedures in a number of Paris hospitals, with extreme, disorientating closeups and some deeply disturbing images, including one mortuary scene of a dead body being dressed in the “civilian” clothes of the living. It gives us brutally...

This article contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
The "Guardians of the Galaxy" films are without a doubt the most aesthetically diverse entries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Far from being just another superhero saga, the films blend elements of comic-book-style derring-do, soap opera, space opera, action-adventure, and character-based melodrama.
But one particular element that writer/director James Gunn has continually brought to all three "Guardians" films is horror. For those not particularly well-versed in the genre, the horrific aspects of the "Guardians" movies may simply seem "edgy," but to those who are aware of Gunn's horror-soaked past as a filmmaker, these elements stick out like a big, fleshy tentacle.
The latest installment of the saga, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," is no exception to showcasing Gunn's horror roots. On the contrary; it may be the goopiest, most intense, upsetting, and transgressive of all the "Guardians" movies,...

Coolio‘s cause of death has been revealed more than six months after he was found dead at a friend’s house in Los Angeles.
The rapper, 59, died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
The coroner’s report also included cardiomyopathy, asthma and phencyclidine, or Pcp, as contributors to his death.
According to the CDC, cardiomyopathy is a “collection of diverse conditions of the heart muscle” that can make its ability to pump blood more difficult.
Coolio’s spokesperson said the rapper went to the bathroom at a friend’s house. When he didn’t come out, the friend called for help. Once responders arrived, Coolio was pronounced dead.

The cause of Raquel Welch’s death on Feb. 15 was cardiac arrest, with Alzheimer’s disease a possible underlying factor.

Her death had been confirmed in February by her reps at Media 4 Management, who noted that Welch died peacefully following a brief illness.
Welch rose to fame in the 1960s with performances in Fantastic Voyage, One Million Years B.C. and Bedazzled, then reached a new level of notoriety with the 1970 release of the controversial Myra Breckinridge.

The story of miniaturized medicos set adrift inside the body of an ailing Russian scientist, Richard Fleischer’s preposterously entertaining film has something for everybody, including enormous balloon-shaped sets and the balloon-shaped Raquel Welch in form-fitting scuba gear. Starring old guard Edmond O’Brien and chiseled ladies’ man Stephen Boyd, this high-tech Saturday matinee garnered unusually good reviews and plenty of action at the box office.

When 1960s and ‘70s icon Raquel Welch died last week at the age of 82, much of the media focus was on her (well-deserved) status as one of the most memorable and gorgeous sex symbols in movie history. A lot of the coverage, in fact, noted that the Chicago native’s substantial talents as an actress, singer, and dancer, were overshadowed by her status as one of the era’s premiere pinups.
While she may be best remembered for her turn as a skimpily-clad cavewoman in 1966’s One Million Years B.C., her breakout role came earlier that year in the 20th Century Fox sci-fi spectacle Fantastic Voyage. The film was Welch’s fourth, but the first in which she had a lead role. She played Cora Peterson, one of five members of a medical team who are miniaturized, along with a small submarine, and injected into the body of a defecting...

Los Angeles – Raquel Welch never let anyone define who she was, despite being touted as a sex symbol in her early career. She defined sexy in films such as “One Million Years B.C.,” “Fantastic Voyage” and the 1970s Three Musketeers series. The movie star and entrepreneur died at age 82 at her home in Los Angeles.
She was born in Chicago as Jo Raquel Tejada (her father was Bolivian). Her family moved to California and she desired a theatrical and dance career, attending San Diego State College on a theater arts scholarship. After marrying her high school sweetheart James Welch – they separated after having two children together – she began her early career in film as Raquel Welch … her agent advised her against a Latina last name. Her first credited film role was in “A Swingin’ Summer” (1964).

The late Raquel Welch was always very pragmatic about her acting career. She understood that she was largely approached for very specific kinds of roles merely for her model good looks and dazzling on-screen sparkle. It's telling that one of her most famous roles, that of Loana in Don Chaffey's 1966 film "One Million Years B.C.," featured Welch in a revealing fur bikini. That Welch was also a hilarious actor was a marvelous bonus for audiences everywhere. She was always very game, and can be seen in any number of energetic and bawdy comedies. Of course she was in Richard Lester's celibate "Three Musketeers" movies in the 1970s. She was, however, always aware of what audiences were looking at. Case in point: Welch's 2010 autobiography is called "Beyond the Cleavage."
In that book, Welch revealed that she was once approached to play the central love interest in the early James Bond film "Thunderball.

Sunny Hostin was booed by the audience of “The View” — and even some of her co-hosts — after suggesting that Kim Kardashian is a sex symbol on par with Raquel Welch, who died Wednesday.
The moment came Thursday as the hosts paid tribute to the actress, who died after fighting a brief illness. She was best known for her role in “Fantastic Voyage,” as well as “The Three Musketeers” and “Legally Blonde.”
Welch also appeared in “One Million Years B.C.,” but only had three lines. Still, her skimpy two-piece deerskin bikini from the film became a popular poster and solidified her as an international sex symbol. In discussing her legacy, host Joy Behar argued that “they don’t make any sex symbols like that” these days.

Raquel Welch, the movie star and model Playboy declared "the most desirable woman of the 1970s," has died at the age of 82. According to her manager, Steve Sauer, (via CNN) Welch passed away after a "brief illness."
Welch was a much-buzzed-about Hollywood ingenue throughout the early 1960s before attaining international stardom in 1966's sci-fi classic "Fantastic Voyage" and the prehistoric Hammer flick "One Million Years B.C." While the latter movie did little to enhance her reputation as an actor, the sight of Welch in a two-piece deerskin bikini made her the pin-up heir to Marilyn Monroe.
Welch's physical beauty was undeniable, and she embraced her sex symbol status. But the Latina performer, who adopted her first husband's last name to avoid the kind of typecasting that drove Rita Moreno from Hollywood at the height of her popularity, knew she was more than just a pretty face, and proved it time and again throughout her career.
