Sleuth is based on a 1970 play written by English writer Anthony Shaffer (1926-2001). Shaffer said the play was partially inspired by one of his friends, composer Stephen Sondheim, whose intense interest in games-playing is mirrored by the character of Wyke.
Three murder mysteries that have gotten big thumbs up by viewers of Sleuth include Murder by Death (1976) in which five brilliant detectives attempt to solve a murder, The Usual Suspects (1995) in which five conmen are forced by a mysterious mastermind criminal to pull one more job, and Clue (1985) in which six dinner guests attempt to solve a murder. Viewers have also recommended almost anything directed by Alfred Hitchcock, as most of his movies are murder mysteries, e.g. Rope (1948), Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window (1954), Dial M for Murder (1954), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960). Also highly recommended is any movie based on an Agatha Christie novel, e.g. Death on the Nile (1978). Other movies that have been mentioned as good murder mysteries include The Last of Sheila (1973), Deathtrap (1982), Chinatown (1974), Mulholland Drive (2001), Lost Highway (1997), and Blue Velvet (1986), and Memento (2000). Those should keep you busy for a while.
