Some of the episodes in the DVD set were obtained in their original un-cut broadcast form and some are shown in the shortened versions as they were in first run syndication. That's why some appear to end abrubtly without the epilogue style scene at the end.

Mark Shera joined the cast at the beginning of season 5 and remained for the duration of the series. He is in seasons 5 through 8.
I have read that Ebsen would fall asleep in between takes and couldn't remember his lines, so he must have been relieved to have less to do. Still, I can't imagine having a series revolve around your character suddenly be diverted towards a young'un be pleasant for any actor. The Shera episodes are certainly less enjoyable for viewers.
