Don’t be too dazzled when host Timothée Chalamet double-dips as his own musical guest on Saturday Night Live later this month. Sure, it’s impressive, but not that unusual — he’ll be the 49th host to pull off the feat. But most of those hosts, from Mick Jagger to Dolly Parton to Charli Xcx, were musicians first who muddled their way through a few comedy sketches. Chalamet is one of the rare SNL hosts to attempt the reverse.
Here are five performers not known primarily for music who nonetheless rocked the house on SNL…
1 Lily Tomlin
Well, here’s a weird one. When Tomlin showed up in Season Eight for her third hosting gig, the musical guest was Black R&b singer Pervis Hawkins — a Tomlin character in full beard. The songs have been scrubbed from the Peacock episode, and there are no clips on YouTube, presumably because Tomlin performed the character in blackface.

It was recently announced that A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet will host the January 25th episode of Saturday Night Live – but he will only be the second-best Bob Dylan impressionist in Studio 8H that night.
Weirdly, Chalamet won’t just be hosting, he will also be the show’s musical guest. While Chalamet isn’t a professional musician, he did do his own singing and guitar-playing in the Dylan biopic, suggesting that he may be performing on SNL as Dylan.
He’ll probably just sing “Like a Rolling Stone” or something, but he could also honor SNL history by belting out some of Dylan’s born-again Christian tunes.
Interestingly enough, Chalamet’s booking shares a number of parallels with an episode from the show’s distant past — and hopefully this one won’t be quite so disastrous.

Let’s face it. Theatre has been the most successful place for stories about popular musicians. Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is selling big on Broadway, as is “Mj.” “A Beautiful Noise,” about Neil Diamond ‘s professional and personal history, had a nice run there, and is touring the country after its run in Los Angeles. We’ve had “Tina,” “Jersey Boys,” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud,” Carole King’s “Beautiful” and others. A new musical is being tested now about Frank Sinatra. But the most exciting news arrives this spring, when recent Tony winner Jonathan Groff portrays Bobby Darin.
But movies about musical stars? A mixed bag. (including Kevin Spacey in a bad one about Bobby Darin) Documentaries have been the safest form to chronicle the life of famous musicians: Ones about David Crosby, Joan Baez, Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt. And, of course, “Woodstock” and Martin Scorsese’s “Last Waltz.

The hands down funniest crucifixion scene in all of movie history came at the end of Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Just as the titular not-the-messiah has abandoned all hope, a fellow crucifixion victim, played by Eric Idle, suggests that he cheer up, and proceeds to belt out the now-iconic tune “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”
In the years since the movie came out, the ironically-peppy number has become a sort of anthem for Idle, who even performed it during the closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics.
But the song that’s made so many people so happy (and a whole lot of Christian fundamentalists very unhappy) was recorded just one day after Idle experienced a personal tragedy: the death of his good friend, legendary drummer Keith Moon. According to Idle, he hugged Moon the day he died, and had to record a Disney-esque ditty soon afterwards.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the MTV Video Music Awards. The inaugural ceremony, held at Radio City Music Hall and hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler in 1984, saw the Cars taking home video of the year their groundbreaking clip for “You Might Think.”
Since then, the VMAs have doled out 39 more trophies for their top prize, with only a small handful of acts joining the club of repeat winners. Taylor Swift has racked up four wins while Eminem, Rihanna, and Beyoncé have notched two a piece (both Swift and Eminem have a shot at adding to their totals again this year).
Despite MTV handing over the choice to viewers in 2006, the quality of the winners in the category has remained surprisingly consistent, with only a few total duds or headscratchers. To celebrate the VMAs’ ruby anniversary, we ranked all 40 video of the year winners from worst to best.

There was at least some hubris in Weezer’s 30th anniversary Blue Album tour announcement. Openers the Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. are more than potential show-stealers, they’re established headliners in their own right. How do you follow that? You drop a giant curtain to reveal a Weezer-branded spacecraft. It seemed instantly clear at the tour opener in Saint Paul, Minn., on Sept. 4 that Weezer have reached new heights as an arena band.

Ahead of a tour commemorating the 30th anniversary of Weezer (b.k.a. the “Blue Album”), the group is planning a gargantuan reissue of the album. The reissue contains the album remastered as well as 36 previously unreleased demos, live recordings, and curiosities (including the fabled “Kitchen Tape” demos). It arrives in a variety of formats on Nov. 1.
The band is teasing the release with what it calls the “third practice” recording of “Undone — The Sweater Song.” The recording sounds fittingly frayed as they rap and sing the song’s lyrics over its eerie guitar line.

Weezer were among the many people in Los Angeles this week who showed up for John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A., performing two songs on the comedian’s delightfully shaggy and silly one-week-only talk show.

Mulaney introduced the performance with characteristic anti-zeal: “Hey party animals,...

Production sound mixer Willie Burton has over 45 years of experience recording on set — he earned his first Academy Award nomination in 1978 on “The Buddy Holly Story” — but when he read the script for “Oppenheimer,” he knew it would pose a whole new set of challenges. “When I saw the script I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is huge,'” Burton told IndieWire. “It was a book, approximately 187 pages. And everybody was teasing me, saying, ‘It’s all dialogue. It’s all on you.'” Add to the dense technical dialogue the difficulty of recording scenes with noisy IMAX cameras on stormy New Mexico locations, and Burton could see that his reunion with “Tenet” director Christopher Nolan would take their collaboration to a whole new level.
For Burton, working with Nolan is different from working with other directors. “I like working with Chris because he makes sure that you have enough prep time,...

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

It’s hard today to remember just how many people watched Mary Tyler Moore during her peak half-hour network comedy era, first with “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, then “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. That Emmy-lauded newsroom sitcom reached 30 million homes, with some 100 million tuning in every Saturday night to watch Moore embody that rare thing on television: a single career woman who was not defined by the men in her life. At the time, this was radical.
Given that those millions were watching Moore back in the 60s and 70s, and later with Nick at Nite reruns, it’s no surprise that many people who did not grow up with Moore do not know her at all. Maybe they’d seen the iconic hat toss or heard a reference in a Weezer song (“Buddy Holly”).

Say what you want about Rivers Cuomo, but the man keeps his word. Back in February, after a fan caught the Weezer singer’s attention by posting a video to TikTok of himself playing the “Buddy Holly” riff for 990 days, Cuomo invited him to perform the song with the band on tour. That offer became a reality on Wednesday night in Madison, Wisconsin.
Wisconsin native Evan Marsalli plays drums in a band called Diet Lite, though his 15 minutes of internet fame came when Cuomo virtually “duetted” his 990th “Buddy Holly” video with a challenge: to play the iconic guitar lick with the band when their “Indie Rock Roadtrip” tour came through town. Indeed, fan footage shows Marsalli with the pop-rock veterans, who piped down to let the young artist hit that “do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do” all by himself.

With just the CW left tomorrow, the near-talent-free upfronts are winding down, and shows are still being shuttered in New York City, while on the picket lines in LA there was Mariachism, tacos, tunes and some Mandalorians to galvanize the troops.

Metallica have taken to TikTok to tease what appears to be another new track off their upcoming album, 72 Seasons. An accompanying caption encourages fans to duet with the clip.
The 80-second instrumental has thus far been rolled out in three videos via the band’s TikTok channel, with each member essentially duetting with the previous clip. The first one features just Lars Ulrich playing drums, the next adds bassist Robert Trujillo, and the most recent one adds frontman James Hetfield. It can be assumed that Kirk Hammett’s contribution to the track will be posted on Tuesday.
The tune offers a chugging riff accompanied by military-like drumming. If this new piece of music does turn out to be a new song from 72 Seasons, it would follow previous singles “Lux Æterna” and “Screaming Suicide.”
With the caption “Duet this,” fans have already offered up some fun (and funny) accompaniments to the song.

When Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival late last May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was capped by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar and potentially the Screen Actors Guild Award as well was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the second choice in the Academy Awards lead actor race as well as in the SAG Awards actor competition on Gold Derby behind Brendan Fraser for “The Whale,” positions that have rarely shifted since last fall. Colin Farrell of “The Banshees of Inisherin” is solidly in third place in both odds.
But the history of both the Oscars and SAGs tells us that Butler may be underestimated. He follows, after all, in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends,...

Buddy Holly was looking for a change in his music career in 1959. After several years of performing and recording with The Crickets, he wanted to branch out as a producer. He scouted new talent on his Decca record label; and came across two men whose lives he would exponentially change. One was country superstar Waylon Jennings. The other was Lou Giordano, my father. Sixty-four years after the day the music died, when Buddy perished in a plane crash alongside Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and pilot Roger Peterson, I’m looking back at my father’s special relationship with Buddy

New Kids on the Block released a video for their new song “Bring Back the Time” last week that’s perhaps the most potent expression of nostalgia we’ve ever seen. It’s the past in its purest, most uncut form, like it was created in Walter White’s secret basement laboratory and injected directly into the veins of their fans.
The video, which doubles as a commercial for the group’s upcoming Mixtape Tour, features Rick Astley, Salt-n-Pepa, and En Vogue (who are all on the tour) re-creating classic...

Fred Parris, the songwriter whose “In The Still of the Night” became one of doo-wop’s most memorable songs, has died at age 85 after what was termed a brief illness. The group’s Facebook page announced his death Friday, although it is unclear when he died. .
“The Five Satins family is devastated by this loss but appreciative of having shared Fred’s music with thousands of fans and friends,” the group said.
The song didn’t chart highly upon its first release, but grew in the years after to personify the era of vocal groups thanks to constant radio airplay. It has been recorded by such artists as Boyz II Men and Debbie Gibson, and has been featured in such films as The Buddy Holly Story, Dirty Dancing and The Irishman.

Rivers Cuomo was such a metalhead that he hated alt-rock when he first heard it.
Cuomo knew metal, and had a quiet soft spot for pop, such as Madonna and Tiffany. Practically everything else was alien to him.

Dustin Hoffman has played a tremendous variety of roles throughout his 50-plus year career: an underconfident graduate in love with his fiancé’s mother; a terminally ill hustler; a mathematician forced to defend his home; real-lifers Lenny Bruce and Carl Bernstein; a marathon runner out to avenge his father’s and brother’s deaths; and most notably as a divorced father and a mentally challenged genius (for which he scored two Academy Awards for Best Actor), among many other memorable performances. However, there is one film that he made during all his great work in the 1970s that, despite receiving a sizeable theatrical release and decent reviews, is virtually unknown to anyone outside of his most ardent admirers. Just two songs into Green Day’s headlining set at the Hella Mega tour launch at Arlington, Texas’s Globe Life Field, Billie Joe Armstrong asked for the houselights to be turned on so he could see the roughly 35,000 people in the audience. This was quite possibly the largest rock audience that had assembled anywhere in the world since the start of the pandemic, and he wanted to bask in their glow.
“Take a look around you,” he said. “This is human contact. We cannot be locked up anymore. We need to be together.

Paul Mooney, a towering figure in the world of comedy and social criticism who brought a sharp eye and sharper humor to the subject of race relations, never better than in his collaborations with Richard Pryor, died today after suffering a heart attack. He was 79.
His death was announced by his cousin Rudy Ealy to CNN contributor Roland Martin, who said Mooney died at his home in Oakland.
As an actor, Mooney portrayed singer Sam Cooke in 1978’s The Buddy Holly Story, played Junebug in Spike Lee’s 2000 Bamboozled, made numerous guest appearances on such TV series and specials as The Richard Pryor Show, The Larry Sanders Show, and, more recently, Chappelle’s Show, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and, in 2004, his own comedy series Judge Mooney.
Mooney’s greatest influence, though, was as a writer, at first for sitcoms such as Sanford and Son and Good Times, but more significantly with and for Pryor.

Taylor Swift didn’t win Video of the Year at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards like she did in 2019 for “You Need to Calm Down,” but she still took home a substantial prize: Best Direction for “The Man,” which was actually her solo directing debut and put her in some pretty impressive company when it comes to VMA-winning directors. Check out the complete list of this year’s winners here.
Some of the most lauded filmmakers in Hollywood have come from the world of music videos. In a townhouse in a gated community in Malibu, Gary Busey, 75, is posing behind his cluttered desk for a photographer. The process is not as simple as it sounds. Once considered one of Hollywood's most promising leading men after his Oscar nomination for 1978's The Buddy Holly Story, Busey suffered a major head injury in a 1988 motorcycle accident, resulting in an inability to censor himself. Gary Busey will play God in new pop-rock musical Only Human opening Off Broadway this fall, producers announced today.
The musical, with a book by Jess Carson, music and lyrics by Mike Squillante and based on a story by Jesse Murphy and Squillante, will have its world premiere at Off Broadway’s Theatre at St. Clements. Previews begin October 8, with an opening night on October 21. The limited engagement runs through January 5, 2020.
“God is everything love is, and that love becomes the beginning of blessings and miracles,” Busey said in a statement. “Playing this role of God is easy because I’m not acting, I’m just believing. You come see it and you’ll believe it too.”
Busey did a two-week stint in Off Broadway’s murder mystery Perfect Crime in 2016, but Only Human will mark his first musical.
The production will be choreographed by Josue Jasmin and directed by NJ Agwuna.

Dennis Quaid’s career is bustin’ out all over. The actor-turned-rocker demonstrated his range Saturday night, taking the stage at Los Angeles music club the Mint with his band The Sharks. The group delivered a raucous set that had the audience of more than 200 on its feet as Quaid danced through the crowd, belted like a Delta bluesman and briefly abandoned his acoustic guitar to tackle the keyboard with flying fingers, his denim-clad derriere, his chest and the heels of his cowboy boots. The over-the-the top physical display – a nod to Jerry Lee Lewis, who Quaid portrayed in 1989’s “Great Balls of Fire!” – was an apt metaphor for a guy whose debut album is “Out of the Box.”
Quaid’s unboxed activities include narrating iHeart Media’s new “Bear and a Banjo” podcast, announced Sunday, March 10, at SXSW. “I’m really excited about it, because podcasting is a new medium...

The way Rami Malek got under Freddie Mercury’s skin and brought him to life again in “Bohemian Rhapsody” was no small miracle. It is similar to how Gary Busey became a star when he uncannily channeled the‘50s rock icon in 1978’s “The Buddy Holly Story.” Or when Joaquin Phoenix was able to capture Johnny Cash’s charisma and his tumultuous dark side in 2005’s “Walk the Line.”
But neither Busey nor Phoenix won in their years. In fact, besides Malek, only five lead actors have been given an Oscar for playing real-life music makers – although it interesting that Mahershala Ali earned a corresponding supporting statuette as concert pianist Don Shirley in “Green Book” this year as well.
Who are these fellows and what traits might their roles have in common?
First was James Cagney as George M. Cohan in 1942’s “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Cagney, best known for his gangster roles,...
