Bille August first developed the idea of this film while working in an L.M. Ericsson factory in Sweden to pay for his education, according to an interview.
"Honning måne" is the original title as seen on screen, but it is formally incorrect; a compound noun like this would usually be spelled "honningmåne" in Danish. The literal English translation is "honeymoon". In English and several other languages this concept refers to a vacation taken by newlyweds, or to a time of happiness following marriage, but this is not the case in current Danish. Since the film is in fact about newlyweds and their short-lived happiness, the title can be understood as a conscious and perhaps ironic "mistranslation". It may also be a reference to a song first heard in Det var paa Rundetaarn (1955) in which the same mistranslation is used for comical effect.
