Fred Olen Ray said a buddy of his was a reader for New World Pictures and he was evaluating author F. Paul Wilson's book The Tomb. Ray then had the idea to shoot something quickly using the title The Tomb, run a big ad at the American Film Market, and then wait for New World to try and pay him not to use that title. But New World decided not to make a movie.

Michelle Bauer was Penthouse magazine's July 1981 Pet of the Month, which grabbed the attention of director Fred Olen Ray and he cast her in this film. This was her first major role in a mainstream film. Before this, she appeared in several porn films under the name Pia Snow, but according to her she was only nude and never had actual sex onscreen.
