Eddie Murphy’s love of Star Trek is well-known. Not only did he give the franchise a shout-out in one of his classic bits from Eddie Murphy: Delirious, but in the movie Boomerang, he uses an episode (Arena) to help seduce Halle Berry’s character. Given that Eddie Murphy worked exclusively for Paramount Pictures in the 1980s, it’s no surprise that the powers that be at the studio briefly considered giving him a role in one of the films.
Indeed, it almost happened with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Released in 1986, which was arguably the height of Eddie Murphy’s fame, the film sees the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise travelling back in time to 1986 San Francisco to collect a humpback whale they can use to communicate with a probe that threatens to destroy earth in the 23rd century. Eddie Murphy has a lot of standalone movies that are great like Trading Places, Harlem Nights, and the more recent Dolomite is my Name, but he’s also been a bit of franchise gold in the past. Obviously, Beverly Hills Cop is the biggest and most recent example, but he’s also been part of 2 48 Hours movies, a couple Nutty Professor flicks, a couple Doctor Dolittle movies and is an integral part of the mega franchise that is Shrek. While we unfortunately have to call Coming to America a franchise now after that abysmal rehash that Amazon dropped on us, there is another movie and character that I actually wouldn’t mind being brought back and has potential, under the right writer and director combo, to be a fun time and maybe even fix some of the mistakes from its predecessor. While Pluto Nash and Norbit are all time stinkers...

Axel Foley makes his glorious return to Beverly Hills this week with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F gracing our home screens. And while Axel is one of Eddie Murphy’s most famous characters, there is no shortage of iconic roles from the comedian. Audiences have gravitated towards the likes of Axel, Reggie Hammond from 48 Hrs., Akeem from Coming to America, or even Chandler Gerald from The Golden Child. However, Murphy himself feels his best performance (or rather performances) comes from the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor, in which he famously played the Klump family, minus the child, as well as a take on Richard Simmons.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Eddie reflects on his past performances. The interviewer brought up the film Bowfinger and praised Murphy’s performance (where he also played multiple roles as twins). However, Murphy still holds Nutty Professor at the top. The Beverly Hills Cop star stated,...

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Early in his career, Gilbert was a horse wrangler in William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) and a bank robber in Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969). Years later, he took the lumps for Lee Majors’ Colt Seavers on the 1981-86 ABC action show The Fall Guy.
Though they weren’t friends at the time, Gilbert and Redford were in the same class at Van Nuys High School, graduating in 1954. They got together on George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when Redford...

As Hollywood neared the midpoint of the 1980s, the industry had abandoned the risk-taking ethos of the 1970s and unabashedly embraced formula filmmaking. Stars still mattered, but the pitch was king. Studio executives keen on becoming their generation's Jack Warner, Daryl Zanuck and Louis B. Mayer were through humoring unpredictable auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby. They wanted can't-miss high-concept projects powered by high-wattage stars that could play for months on end in theaters because, despite the skyrocketing value of home video and pay cable channels, theatrical was still king.
"Beverly Hills Cop" traversed a rocky path from inception to production, but producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly developed and re-developed the project until they paired a 23-year-old comedy superstar with a once-hot director who'd two years prior gotten himself fired off "WarGames." Eddie Marks, a member of the costume department on such films as The Breakfast Club, The Witches of Eastwick and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the president of the Western Costume Company since 1992, has died. He was 76.
Marks died Monday of natural causes during a visit to Prague, a spokesman for the company told The Hollywood Reporter.
Marks joined Western Costume in 1989 as a vice president and became president three years later. He helped steer the company from a cramped Melrose Avenue warehouse near the Paramount lot to a hangar-sized building on Vanowen Street in North Hollywood in 1990.
Western Costume was founded sometime between 1912 and 1915 and has been among the world’s largest suppliers of costumes ever since. “What makes us stand out from our competitors is that, over the last 30 years, I’ve bought 11 companies that were costume rental companies,” Marks told THR in a 2019 profile of Western Costume.

In the fall of 1983, one could already make a plausible case for Martin Scorsese as one of the greatest living American filmmakers based on “Mean Streets,” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Taxi Driver,” “Italianamerican,” “The Last Waltz,” “Raging Bull,” and “The King of Comedy.” But as the holidays approached, Scorsese’s career was in trouble.
After establishing himself with a series of lean, mean masterpieces shot on tight schedules, the director’s productions had grown in a scale disproportionate to their financial success; “New York, New York,” “Raging Bull,” and “The King of Comedy” had all taken around a hundred days to shoot, and while all three are acknowledged as classics today, they received mixed reviews at the time and “Raging Bull” barely broke even at the box office — “New York, New York” and “The King of Comedy” were flat-out flops.

The Return to Horror High episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s, especially the mid-1980s, were basically the heyday of slasher films, many of them were being released each year in theaters and direct-to-video, some of them making huge box office numbers like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday the 13th movies, and the Halloween movies. Non-franchise films were not as big both financially and critically but they didn’t do too badly either. Then came Return to Horror High in 1987 (watch it Here). Some would say that the film was ahead of its time, being a very meta horror comedy about slasher films, having endings within endings, and twisting the sub-genre on its head. However, the film failed,...

It’s 1986 and Eddie Murphy is riding high on the success of Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and Trading Places and it is time to create another blockbuster for this talented star. What do you do? Well, let’s keep the same formula and feature Murphy as a hip, wisecracking hero who this time finds lost children. Then, throw in a bit of martial arts in the style of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and add some Asian mysticism that reminds viewers of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Felix Silla, best known as the gibberish-spouting Cousin Itt on the 1960s TV sitcom The Addams Family, died today from pancreatic cancer. He was 84 and died in Las Vegas, according to a tweet from Gil Gerard, who costarred with him on the 1979-81 NBC series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
Silla donned a full-body hairpiece, sunglasses and a bowler hat to achieve the role of Cousin Itt, who could only be understood by members of the Addams Family, thanks to his strange mumbling. The role was one of several where Silla’s face went unseen, including appearances as robot Twiki on Buck Rogers and as a hang-gliding Ewok in Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi.
One role where he could be seen was as the villain Litvak, who took on George Segal’s Sam Spade Jr. in The Maltese Falcon sequel The Black Bird (1975).

There’s only a thin veneer separating David Simon’s adaptation of Philip Roth’s “The Plot Against America” to today. The story of the rise of fascism in an alternate America where Charles Lindbergh is president easily draws parallels to today’s political landscape and that’s before everything, including the entertainment industry, shut down due to the spread of coronavirus.
Content aside, Simon’s series also subverts audiences’ expectations of what the 1940s looked like. An era commonly associated with Old Hollywood glamour, especially in its costumes, was intentionally stripped and muted through the help of costume designer Jeriana San Juan. Here, San Juan takes IndieWire through the process of creating the looks, from inspiration to production:

AT&T, under constant attack by Time Warner shareholders because of the deterioration of Turner Broadcasting's CNN, now has the threat of their DC Comics brand being banned in China, unless a variant cover supporting writer Frank Miller's 48-page 'Black Label' one-shot, "The Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child", illustrated by Rafael Grampá, available December 11, 2019, be withdrawn from circulation:
In a cover for 'The Golden Child', 'Batwoman' is seen throwing a 'Molotov' cocktail in front of the words 'The Future Is Young'.
The depiction of the incendiary device is being linked to the violent tactics used by Hong Kong protesters, the black suit worn by the character alludes to protestor clothing and the title 'The Golden Child' references the color yellow, also a mark of the pro-democracy riots.

The depiction of the cocktail is being linked to violent tactics used by Hong Kong protesters, and that the black suit worn by the character also alludes to protestor clothing. Some also argued the title 'The Golden Child' deliberately references the color yellow, which is also a mark of the pro-democracy protests.
DC Comics, despite the pressure, immediately removed the offending illustration from social media, but...

A frenetic mash-up of 30’s pulp and 70’s kung fu thrillers, John Carpenter’s action comedy stars Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a winking caricature of every musclebound hero from Doc Savage to Indiana Jones. The film was hampered in its rush to beat Eddie Murphy’s similarly-styled The Golden Child to the box office but has since worked its way into a long line of cult favorites.

The man sitting across from me in a burgundy Def Jam letterman jacket and matching Jordan 12 Retro Bordeauxs has changed irrevocably since we met back in May. Yk Osiris has shed much of the boyish charm he possessed back then; now, he’s full of the unique brand of self-confidence (with a tinge of supreme arrogance) that’s reserved for newly minted R&b stars. On the cover of Yk’s debut album, The Golden Child, he’s Photoshopped in front of the Egyptian pyramids, reclining on a golden throne,...

Eddie Murphy, Magic: The Gathering, Xbox Live, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
The deforestation of the Amazonian rainforest has been linked to a disease without a vaccine.
"Illegal logging and pervasive wildfires are just a couple of the dangers facing the Amazon rainforest, a global bed of biodiversity and carbon sequestration. The consequences of this deforestation are as local as rising temperatures in Brazil and as distant as blooms of Sargassum seaweed in the Virgin Islands. Now scientists say we should add malaria to that list."
Read more at Inverse.
Two new sets for Magic: The Gathering have been announced for 2020.
"We knew that there were going to be a bunch of new sets for Magic: The Gathering, and in their weekly live stream, we found out from Wizards of the Coast that the two upcoming sets are Theros: Beyond Death and Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.

Frank Miller’s new Batman one-shot comic book has been announced that he’s written called Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child. It will continue the story first told in his 1986 book The Dark Knight Returns and marks the fourth installment in the Batman series.
The Golden Child is set three years after The Dark Knight 3: The Master Race, and the “golden child” in question is young Jonathan Kent, the son of Superman and Wonder Woman. The comic will be illustrated by artist Rafael Grampá, and this is the synopsis that was officially released by DC for the 48-page comic:
“Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Carrie Kelley, and Lara Kent overcame the renegade priest Quar and his cult of Kandorian fanatics in their bid to convert humanity into worshipping them as gods. During this interim, Lara [the older sister of Jonathan Kent] has spent time learning about what it means to be human, while Carrie has...

Frank Miller returns to Batman’s dark future with Superman, Superboy, and Rafael Grampa.
DC’s Black Label is dropping a pretty big book in December: the latest in the series spawned from The Dark Knight Returns. This one is called The Golden Child, and the most shocking thing about it is probably its artist.
Rafael Grampa, the Eisner-winning Brazilian creator of 5 and Mesmo Delivery, takes the penciling duties for The Golden Child, while Frank Miller returns as writer. Grampa’s art style is like if you threw Sean Murphy, Paul Pope, and Frank Quitely in a blender. Spoilers: that’s real good. And he almost never does interiors!
The Golden Child is a 48-page one-shot, presumably oversized as the other Black Label books are. It picks up three years after the events of the last series. In that one, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batwoman, and Lara...

It looks like the long-awaited Coming to America sequel isn’t Eddie Murphy‘s only reunion this year.
The actor met up with the grown-up former child star of his 1986 hit The Golden Child at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, more than three decades after the film hit screens.
Murphy, 58, posed for a photo with Jasmin L. Reate, who played the title role in The Golden Child as a kid. It remains her one and only film role.
“He was just as kind as I remembered him when I was 6,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
