When composer Alan Menken first joined the animated film “Spellbound,” the prospect of writing the score and songs felt “exciting and terrifying at the same time” because the story “defied a formulaic approach.” It is a sentiment that his collaborator and lyricist Glenn Slater echoes, because “while this has the form of a fairytale story, it’s actually a much bigger story than your typical fairytale.” The new Netflix movie centers on Princess Ellian, whose parents have been inexplicably transformed into gigantic monsters. The lyricist continues, “It’s an allegory for a family dynamic that many, many families go through.” Watch our complete video interview above.
Menken and Slater are frequent collaborators, having preciously worked on films “Tangled” and “Home on the Range,” TV series “Galavant,” and Broadway musicals “The Little Mermaid” and “Sister Act” together. The lyricist says that their process “always starts with conversation,” adding, “We sit at...

Jonathan Haze, who starred for Roger Corman as the flower shop assistant Seymour Krelborn in the original The Little Shop of Horrors, just one of two dozen films he made with the B-movie legend, has died. He was 95.
Haze died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Rebecca Haze, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A cousin of drummer Buddy Rich, Haze was a valuable and versatile member of Corman’s repertory company from 1954 — when he acted in The Fast and the Furious and Monster From the Ocean Floor — until 1967, when he appeared in The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and served as an assistant director on The Born Losers.
In one of his more noteworthy turns, Haze portrayed one of the three teenagers who stumble upon $250,000 worth of heroin and become dealers in Warner Bros. drama Stakeout on Dope Street (1958), the first feature directed by Irvin Kershner.

Over the course of three Venom movies, Tom Hardy has done a lot to bring a modicum of gravitas to a profoundly silly story about a parasitic alien whose place in the Marvel universe cosmology has never made a lot of sense. At least to those not schooled in all things MCU. The fact that the trilogy has avoided taking itself too seriously has been both its saving grace and its limitation. It’s hard to invest too much in the usual bombast and mayhem and CG smackdowns when the films come off as goofball larks with way fewer teeth than the giant pointed chompers on the title character.
On the other hand, Hardy brings sufficient charm (and witty voice work) to his symbiote-inhabited character’s internal battle between id and superego to make each entry diverting enough, even if they leave little aftertaste. And so it goes with Venom: The Last Dance,...

The most recent exit was Dust Bunny, who was revealed to be funny man Andy Richter on the October 16 episode. Keep reading for all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Chess Piece”?

If there’s one overarching theme within all of Mike Leigh’s films, it is a sense of naturalism. Leigh is a patient filmmaker who lets scenes play out to their fullest extent and does not conform to traditional narrative structures that impede the authenticity of what he is capturing. This general style has allowed Leigh to approach radically different topics, such as a tortured anti-hero in “Naked,” the London Opera in “Topsy-Turvy,” or a legendary British painter in “Mr. Turner.” With his latest work “Hard Truths,” Leigh turns his sights on the epidemic of anger that has seemingly swept the world over the past decade.
The notion of a filmmaker of Leigh’s experience reflecting on the generational divide could have easily been misconstrued as an embittered, older artist lashing out at a world that he no longer recognizes. However, “Hard Truths” doesn’t condemn just one generation, cultural shift,...

Former Nsync member Joey Fatone is returning to Broadway for the first time in two decades as part of the cast of & Juliet, the musical comedy “sequel” to Romeo and Juliet featuring the songs of Max Martin, the record producer and writer who just happened to have worked with Nsync way back when.
Fatone will play the role of Lance beginning January 21, 2025. He’ll play a limited 9-week engagement in & Juliet through March 16, 2025, taking over the role from Tony Award-winner (and original Broadway cast member) Paulo Szot.
“I’m excited that I’ll be joining the cast of & Juliet!,” Fatone said in a statement. “I can’t wait to get out there and sing Max Martin’s amazing songs – his hits have shaped so much of pop music. Diana Baffa-Brill, a dancer and choreographer who assisted the legendary Mame choreographer Onna White and later re-staged scores of productions of that classic musical, died in Los Angeles on Sunday, October 13, following a long illness. She was 81.
Her death was announced by her family.
With television appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show as part of the Bob DeVoy Trio and on The Jackie Gleason Show as a June Taylor Dancer, Baffa-Brill made her Broadway debut at 18 in 1961 (as Diana Baffa) in 13 Daughters, returning to Broadway in Do I Hear a Waltz? and La Grosse Valise (both 1965).
The following year would bring her longest-lasting association, when in 1966 she became both a performer and the dance captain in Broadway’s Mame starring Angela Lansbury, choreographed by White.
Seventeen years later, in 1983, she would return to Broadway with Lansbury in a Mame revival, this time serving to recreate White’s original choreography.

Any seasoned horror fan will start feeling numb to fear. For this reason, the horror film that frightens me the most is more disgusting than scary. Surprisingly, the flick in question has a big cult following.
The horror film that frightens me the most is terrifying for 1 reason only
Blood doesn’t scare me. I could watch the scene from A Nightmare on Elm Street where all of Johnny Depp’s blood splatters all over the ceiling while eating lunch. What creeps me out is seeing organs.
Repo! The Genetic Opera is a rock musical about a dystopia where transplanted organs are repossessed. It grosses me out because it has more organs than any other horror movie. The songs aren’t great, it’s disgusting without being clever, and it’s not scary in the conventional sense. But it forces you to look at human innards for long periods of time,...

Short of outright sobs, there are just two sounds you’ll hear coming from movie theaters: laughter and screams. When filmmakers can successfully elicit both — running horror-loving audiences through emotional minefields that chase each adrenaline spike with just enough comedic relief to set them up for another shock — their films take on an almost electric quality. Just thinking of the stunning yet silly reveals in genre staples like “Shaun of the Dead” or “The Cabin in the Woods” can zap a smile on your face, and leave you itching to rewatch other memorable scenes and scares from your favorite funny yet spooky movies.
There’s considerable debate about which title merits being called the first horror comedy. Numerous shorts, including the 1920 silent film “Haunted Spooks,” might qualify. But by the time Bud Abbott...

Bubble, boil, steam, and burn, it’s time to watch those film reels turn. That’s right, it’s October, which means it’s almost Halloween, but the minute the clock struck midnight on the 1st, we here at IndieWire were already decked in black and frightening our office mates at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. While carving pumpkins, eating candy, and donning elaborate costumes may be how most ring in this special time of year, we believe there’s no better celebration of spooky season than entering a dark theater and sharing a few collective screams with strangers.

Frank Oz’s illustrious career will be celebrated by the Museum of the Moving Image with screening series “The Magic of Oz: A Frank Oz Retrospective.”
All 15 films Oz directed will screen, ranging from “Little Shop of Horrors” to “The Muppets Take Manhattan” to “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Bowfinger.” Oz’s acting roles in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Inside Out,” plus his character creations for “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show,” will also be part of the lineup. "Barney Miller" may not be one of the most talked-about sitcoms of the '70s these days, but perhaps it should be. The NYPD-set show was in some ways the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" of its time, a socially conscious, funny series that set its action squarely in the precinct where members of the public came to ask the authorities for help -- or get arrested by them.
Like most shows about cops, it has its inherent biases, and some parts of the show have aged poorly. But "Barney Miller" is also surprisingly progressive at times. As TV historian Matt Baume writes in his queer sitcom history "Hi Honey, I'm Homo," the show broke new ground for gay characters on TV, facing off against network censors to portray New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood (post-Stonewall!) with authenticity and diversity.
Only two seasons of "Barney Miller" are currently available to rent digitally in the U.

What's the best Jack Nicholson movie? Ask a group of film fans, and you'll likely get a half-dozen different answers. The actor's most historically significant movie may be "Chinatown," the sun-baked California noir from 1974 that earned 11 Oscar nominations and a permanent spot in the American Library of Congress' National Film Registry. Or it might be "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the beloved adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel that swept the Oscars in 1975 and turned the already-popular Nicholson into Hollywood's hottest commodity.
The actor's most popular films according to Letterboxd users are Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece "The Shining" and Martin Scorsese's crime saga "The Departed." His highest-grossing role at the box office came in 1989, when Tim Burton cast him as the rictus-grin supervillain The Joker in "Batman." Other popular moneymakers featuring the veteran performer include James L. Brooks' "As Good As It Gets," Nancy Meyers' "Something's Gotta Give,...

Director Greg Berlanti didn’t intend for his new romantic comedy “Fly Me to the Moon” to have a theatrical release.
“It was originally direct to streaming,” Berlanti says, speaking Thursday at a friends and family screening of the movie at San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood. “But then we handed in the cut and we started testing it. We tested it in Denver and it went very well. We tested it in California and we tested it in Texas. Every time, it was very much a resounding response from the focus group and testing that this was a theatrical movie.”
The film was produced by Apple Original Films and will be distributed by Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures.
A reimagining of the history of man’s first trip to the moon, the movie stars Channing Tatum as Cole Davis, a former military pilot in charge of Apollo 11’s launch. Scarlett Johansson co-stars as Kelly Jones,...

[This story includes spoilers from season six of Love Island USA.]
Season six of Peacock’s Love Island USA could arguably be one of the most dramatic thus far — and it’s only 15 episodes in.
Not only is the long-running dating competition series finding new eyes this year, but it also has a new host with Vanderpump Rules break out star Ariana Madix.
Her hosting turn on the hit dating show comes as her status with her other reality show — the hit Bravo series that has followed her and her Hollywood friends for just over a decade — remains fluid. Following the “Scandoval” scandal that centered on her and ex Tom Sandoval for the past two seasons, Vanderpump Rules is taking a hiatus. Madix and the ensemble are taking the summer off of filming in order to regroup. Ultimately, it will be up to Madix whether she wants to return.

More than a decade ago, Jinkx Monsoon manifested her dream life. During her winning run on Season Seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, she confessed that her biggest goal after the show was to “do drag on Broadway.”
She’s more than made good on her word since. After finishing a celebrated run as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago last year, she took on the role of Audrey, the sweet but beleaguered bleach-blonde in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, and is set to return to Chicago at the end of the month.

If you thought everybody hated Chris in the early 2000s, wait until you see how much the disdain has grown in 2024. The comedy series Everybody Hates Chris, inspired by filmmaker Chris Rock’s teenage years, is getting reimagined for a new animated series called Everybody Still Hates Chris. Select actors from the original live-action series reprise their roles while newcomers join the hate parade coming to Comedy Central later this year.
Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold reprise their roles as Julius and Rochelle, respectively, with newcomers Tim Johnson Jr., Ozioma Akagha, Terrence Little Gardenhigh, and Gunnar Sizemore joining the cast.
Here’s the official synopsis and details for Everybody Hates Chris courtesy of Comedy Central’s press release:
Everybody Still Hates Chris will feature Chris Rock as “Adult Chris,” narrating stories inspired by his experience growing up as a skinny nerd in a large working-class family in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, during the late 1980s.

Why did Sarah Hyland leave Love Island USA? That’s a question Love Island USA fans are buzzing about as Season 6 begins, and Sarah is nowhere to be found.
After two seasons of hosting the hit Peacock show, Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix has taken over hosting duties at the villa.
The news shouldn’t be surprising because Ariana was announced as the new Love Island USA host in March.
Ariana made a few guest appearances on the show during Season 5, so the transition from Sarah to the Vanerpump Rules star made sense.
What isn’t making sense to some Love Island USA fans is why Sarah isn’t the host of the reality TV show anymore.
Here’s what we know about what happened to Sarah Hyland on Love Island USA.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Bikers and Beatniks and Bisexuals, Oh My!
Last month, the internet — or, at the very least, my queer film-obsessed corner of the internet — broke with the announcement of “Pillion,” a romance film starring Harry Melling as a stick-in-the-mud who becomes the submissive boy toy of a leather-clad biker hottie. The prospect of watching Melling, an underrated actor best known for his childhood role of the bratty Dudley Dursley, under the thumb of Alexander Skarsgård in fetish gear is no doubt enticing.

When the news of Roger Corman’s passing was announced, the online film community immediately responded with a flood of tributes to a legend. Many began with the multitude of careers he helped launch, the profound influence he had on independent cinema, and even the cameos he made in the films of Corman school “graduates.”
Tending to land further down his list of achievements and influences a bit is his work as a director, which is admittedly a more complicated legacy. Yes, Corman made some bad movies, no one is disputing that, but he also made some great ones. If he was only responsible for making the Poe films from 1960’s The Fall of the House of Usher to 1964’s The Tomb of Ligeia, he would be worthy of praise as a terrific filmmaker. But several more should be added to the list including A Bucket of Blood (1959) and Little Shop of Horrors...

Amazon MGM Studios has rounded out the cast of Oh. What. Fun., its all-star holiday comedy being directed by Michael Showalter, who is coming off the record-breaking success of the streamer’s romantic drama The Idea of You.

Michelle Pfeiffer is leading the ensemble that already include Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa.
Described as both a love letter to moms and tonally a cross between Home for the Holidays and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the story centers on a woman named Claire Clauster (Pfeiffer) who organizes a special Christmas outing, but her family forgets her in the shuffle. By the time they realize their mistake,...

Legendary producer and director Roger Corman, who died recently at age 98, had an immeasurable impact on American cinema as we know it. The number of actors, writers, and directors who learned their craft on a Corman production is staggering, and he was known for giving people chances to prove themselves on the low-budget pictures he either produced or directed himself. Tons of notable names went through the so-called "Corman school," including James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, and Joe Dante, just to name a few.
Three-time Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson is another significant alumnus of the Corman school of filmmaking — in fact, his very first movie, "The Cry Baby Killer," was a Corman production, and it provided Nicholson the first of many starring roles across his incredible career. The film follows a young man who thinks he's committed murder outside of a local hang-out restaurant,...

When Roger Corman died on May 9 at age 98, the film world lost one of its great independent film legends. Over the course of his seven decade career, Corman directed over 55 films and received more than 500 producing credits, creating work that helped serve as the launchpad for major Hollywood stars and filmmakers like Peter Fonda, Frances Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Peter Bogdanovich, and Jonathan Demme. And yet, from his first film to his last, Corman remained true to his roots of low-budget, independent, lowbrow-yet-brilliant genre filmmaking.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Corman was smart enough to attend Stanford University studying industrial engineering, but quit his first job in the field after only four days. Looking to go into the film industry, he worked his way up at 20th Century Fox from mail room messenger to story reader. But after he didn’t receive credit for the success of “The Gunslinger,...

We have some sad news to share today because it's been confirmed that legendary B-movie filmmaker Roger Corman has passed away at 98.
He produced and directed hundreds of low-budget movies and was responsible for discovering the likes of Jack Nicholson (Little Shop of Horrors), Martin Scorsese (Boxcar Bertha), Francis Ford Coppola (Dementia 13), and Robert De Niro (Boxcar Bertha).
Beloved in Hollywood, Corman was praised for hiring women in key executive and creative roles at a time when that sadly wasn't the norm.
Also of note is the fact that, after producing a movie called The Fast and the Furious in 1955, he made a deal with fellow producer Neal Moritz to exchange the name rights for stock footage, meaning Corman played a small, yet unlikely role, in launching the hit racing/action series in 2001.
Known as "The Pope of Pop Cinema", "The Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood", and "The King of Cult,...
