Kirk E. Kelleykahn’s heartfelt documentary “A Star Without a Star: The Untold Juanita Moore Story” builds the case for Moore — the director’s grandmother and an Oscar nominee, whose work spans eight decades — to be recognized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Made over the course of 19 years, the labor of love includes the insights and testimonials of actors such as Sidney Poitier and Louise Fletcher, who died before the film was completed. Despite a structure that briefly wanders in the movie’s later stages, the doc makes a very strong argument for Moore’s contributions.

There may not be a ton of genre-related home media releases coming out this week, but the films that are coming to Blu-ray are an impressive bunch all the same. Universal has both Unsane and Pacific Rim Uprising on tap in a variety of formats, including 4K Ultra HD, and Scream Factory has a double dose of classic terror coming your way this Tuesday with Night of the Lepus and Alien Predators. And rounding out this week’s Blu-ray and DVD offerings is the indie thriller The Hollow Child, which comes home courtesy of Lionsgate.

One of the many great things about Scream Factory's Blu-ray releases is that they often align with the movies of the past that we love to celebrate and discuss on Daily Dead, and their latest batch of Blu-ray announcements are no exception, including two films highlighted in our special features columns: The Curse of the Cat People (featured in Perry Ruhland's Crypt of Curiosities) and Night of the Lepus (spotlighted in Bryan Christopher's Catalog From the Beyond).

We’re nearly halfway through July, but somehow, here at the ole’ multiplex, there’s a distinct chill. No, it’s not somebody tinkering with the thermostat. It could be this new horror flick, perhaps. Although it’s not the good chill as in a memorable “spine-tingler”. No, it’s as if this wannabe’ thriller somehow escaped the dumping ground of mid-January, or a Friday-the-thirteenth weekend, or sometime close to Halloween. It’s squarely aimed at the pre-teen and teen set since it’s got the PG-13 rating, so it’s a bit scary, just not too intense or “gory gross”. And it features a cast from other young adult flicks and TV shows for audience identification. And what’s the added incentive at the top of the poster, the nudge that’ll put behinds in the seats? “From the director of Annabelle”…really. That’s something to boast about?...

Well before the mainstream fascination with the soft-core sexual sensibilities of Fifty Shades of Grey, one of the more notable alums of such boundary pushing was American filmmaker Zalman King. After producing the infamous sensation that was Adrian Lyne’s 9 ½ Weeks, King moved into filmmaking himself, debuting in 1988 with Two Moon Junction, before collaborating with his wife Patricia Louisiana Knopp on what stands as his most high profile title with Wild Orchid in 1989, reuniting him with Weeks stars Mickey Rourke. As is often the case with cinema seriously interested in exploring eroticism and titillation, the title suffers from a lot of misplaced energy. Character development and its semblance of a narrative appear to be roughly hewn afterthoughts, its most pronounced moments revolving around extremely stylized sexual congress between several different characters (and stylized in the vein of what we see on display in Verhoeven’s Showgirls).

Universal Pictures released their new drama/thriller flick, "The Boy Next Door" into theaters today, and the top, major movie critics have delivered their reviews. It turns out that most of them just didn't take to it too well, giving it an overall 31 score out of a possible 100 across 27 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The movie stars: Kristin Chenoweth, John Corbett, Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Guzman. We've added blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Claudia Puig at USA Today, gave it a 63 score, stating: "Predictable and foolishly unsuspecting characters react in ways that make you want to shake them. But there's an undeniable sense of silly fun in this erotic thriller." Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 58 grade. He said: "Boy's premise reeks of stalker-movie mothballs, and it's too timid to fully dive into the high camp it hints at. Instead, this cookie just crumbles.

FEARnet sat down recently with 1990’s bombshell and prolific actress Sherilyn Fenn on the set of director Hank Braxtan’s creature feature Unnatural to chat about the film, as well as the legacy of ‘Twin Peaks’, the David Lynch-created series and film that rocketed her to stardom, 1998’s erotic feature Two Moon Junction in which she starred, and much more. When a pre-x-Files David Duchovny was hired by filmmaker Zalman King ( 9 1/2 Weeks, Wild Orchid, Two Moon Junction) for the Showtime series Red Shoe Diaries, he admits he was a bit on the inexperienced side. “As an actor I was terrible. I was green and I didn’t know it, and he didn’t tell me — which is good. I was blissfully ignorant of my own limitations,” laughs Duchovny. “Zalman just filled me with confidence. When he told me I was great, I believed it, and I started to make my way towards getting better as an actor. For a guy...

Though best known as a pioneer in the straight-to-cable softcore sex industry with his long-running Showtime series Red Shoe Diaries, Zalman King began his long career as an actor and had several interesting cult film credits. Born Zalman King Lefkowitz, King began his career acting on TV in the .60s. In 1978, King starred in Blue Sunshine, a weird ‘Hippies Revenge’ shocker from director Jeff Lieberman about Stanford University students who drop bad acid resulting in 10-year delayed homicidal freakouts. In Trip With The Teacher (1974), King played the scuzzy leader of a group of bikers who terrorize a group of female students after their bus breaks down in the desert. Other notable acting credits included the Corman Alien knockoff Galaxy Of Terror (1981) and the bizarre Jesus conspiracy film The Passover Plot (1976).

Zalman King, the filmmaker behind a string of popular and steamy erotic thrillers in the ’80s and ’90s, died on Friday at age 70, according to the Associated Press, citing his son-in-law. The cause was cancer. Born Zalman King Lefkowitz, King began his career acting on TV in the ’60s. But his real breakthrough came when he and his wife, Patricia Louisianna Knop, wrote the screenplay for 1986′s 9 1/2 Weeks. Slickly directed by Adrian Lyne and produced by King, the kinky, soft-lit, taboo love story starred Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke and was a hit at the box-office, spawning a slew of racy imitators.

"Released in 1938 and now available in a remastered edition from the Warner Archive Collection, The Great Waltz was one of Louis B Mayer's frequent attempts to bring culture to the American masses by buying up wholesale lots of European talent," writes Dave Kehr in the New York Times. It's a "biographical fantasy woven, with no particular concern for the truth, around the figure of the Austrian composer Johann Strauss." And now out from New Yorker Video, "the 1975 film adaptation of Schoenberg's Moses und Aron by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet stands in roughly the same relation to The Great Waltz as Schoenberg's dissonant, 12-tone compositions do to Strauss's infectious oom-pah-pahs. Schoenberg's unfinished opera is a work of the utmost sobriety and seriousness — a philosophical assertion of monotheism that confirmed Schoenberg's reconversion to Judaism — and it is presented by Straub and Huillet in a form that avoids any theatrical effects (or,...

Film director Zalman King has died at the age of 69, and I'm sad to report the world got just a little less sexy with his passing.
I really can't claim to be a longtime fan of Mr. King. In fact, the first time I heard his name, it was in connection with the film 9½ Weeks, which he produced and is a movie I less than affectionately refer to as a perfume ad for date rape. This is not because it involved consensual bondage with a dominant male; rather, because it offered up several sequences in which the heroine did not know or consent to everything that was happening to her. Yep folks, it doesn't matter how sexy the lead actor is or how smoky the jazz music is that's playing in the background, lack of consent is lack of consent. So while the film's soundtrack (featuring songs by my idol John Taylor from Duran Duran,...

Sherilyn Fenn, Richard Tyson, Two Moon Junction Zalman King Dies Pt.1: Mickey Rourke-Kim Basinger Sex Drama Nine 1/2 Weeks Though much of the media coverage on the film focused on the Sherilyn Fenn-Richard Tyson sex scenes and a full-frontal nude shot of Fenn, the most interesting aspect of Two Moon Junction was its highly eclectic cast, which included Oscar winners Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) and Burl Ives (The Big Country), Oscar nominee Juanita Moore (Imitation of Life), plus Little Darlings' Kristy McNichol, The Diary of Anne Frank's Millie Perkins, Fantasy Island's Hervé Villechaize, Endless Love's Martin Hewitt, TV star Don Galloway, and Milla Jovovich of the future Resident Alien movies. But despite the cast and the sex, Two Moon Junction bombed domestically, earning a paltry $1.54 million. Compared to Two Moon Junction, the $7 million-budgeted Wild Orchid (1990) was a megahit.

Filmmaker Zalman King Loses Cancer Battle At 69

Actor/director Zalman King has died, aged 69.
King was best known for his steamy thrillers like 9 1/2 Weeks, Two Moon Junction and Wild Orchid. He also brought the controversial Red Shoe Diaries to TV.

The director of the erotically charged films Two Moon Junction, Wild Orchid and Red Shoe Diaries and producer/co-writer of Adrian Lyne’s cult hit 9½ Weeks died today at his home in Santa Monica after a long battle with cancer, a family member confirmed to Deadline. He was 70. King, dubbed “the high priest of erotic filmmaking,” has dozens of film and TV producer, director and writer credits and often collaborated with his wife, writer-producer Patricia Louisianna Knop. They co-penned 9½ Weeks, the 1986 film that starred Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger as a pair of strangers who begin a relationship based solely on sex and was notably hot and heavy for its time. The MGM title grossed $6.7 million. King and his wife also co-wrote 1989′s Wild Orchid, starring Rourke and Jacquline Bisset, as well as many episodes of Red Shoe Diaries, the Showtime series that spawned a 1992 TV movie and numerous direct-to-video titles.

Forgotten Star Kristy McNichol 'Outs' Herself To Help Bullied Kids

Actress Kristy McNichol has 'come out' as a lesbian in a bid to help kids who are tormented about their sexuality.
The 49-year-old former child star of TV hit Empty Nest and cult film Two Moon Junction dropped off Hollywood's radar in the late 1990s when she retired from acting - but now she's making a brief return to the spotlight to help bullied teens.
Announcing his client has been living with her partner Martie Allen for two decades, McNichol's publicist Jeff Ballard tells People.com, "(She) is sad about kids being bullied. She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different."
The Emmy Award-winning former actress has also released a recent photo of herself and Allen on a night out, stating that because she is "approaching 50" she wants to be "open about who I am".

Raise your hand if you could never hear the dialog in Little Darlings because your gaydar was pinging so loudly when Kristy McNichol was onscreen.
Little Darlings
I see those hands. And today, your gaydar has been proven right. In this week's People McNichol acknowledged that she is indeed a lesbian. The actress also released a picture with her partner of more than 20 years, Martie Allen.
If you didn't raise your hand, you're probably a decade younger than those of us high-fiving because we knew it all along. McNichol was one of our favorite mulleted icons on '80s TV, appearing in everything from Family (in which she played Buddy, the younger sister of Meredith Baxter's character) to one of the kids on Empty Nest.
Along the way, she appeared in movies like Little Darlings and Two Moon Junction, which I watched over and over without ever quite knowing why.

Things are starting to heat up for Priest, another in a long line of recent dark post-apocalyptic road trip movies. Paul Bettany has been attached for a while, and there are two separate casting announcements today.
First, there's been a Madchen Amick sighting. Remember when Twin Peaks was the drama to watch on TV for about three-and-a-half months? Amick was one of a quartet of babes featured on the whacked out David Lynch series, along with Sheryl Lee, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Sherilyn Fenn. And that makes me think of Two Moon Junction and the skintastic Meridian. Yikes. Anyway, Amick went on to do...not as much as I would have thought, unfortunately, but now she'll play the mother of Bettany's kidnapped niece, which is the impetus for Bettany's journey.
Also, according to Chud, director Scott Stewart has Tweeted that Christopher Plummer and Brad Dourif are joining the cast as well,...
