Since the fourth quarter of 2024, more than 50% of gross streaming subscriptions have been for ad-supported plans.
It was once unthinkable to watch an on-demand streaming service like Netflix with ads. Streaming was supposed to be a haven from the non-stop bombardment of commercials found on broadcast and cable TV channels, but the landscape has changed in 2024. Streamers have embraced ads as the price for subscriptions continues to rise, and a new study from Antenna shows that customers are also continuing to respond positively to ads.
Key Details: Antenna found that as of the third quarter of 2024, 43% of all paid streaming subscriptions are for ad-supported plans. During the same quarter, 56% of gross additions were for ad plans. Peacock has the highest proportion of new customers signing up for its ad tier at 78%. Sign Up $7.99+ / month peacocktv.com

NBCUniversal’s streamer becomes the latest to try and put an end to the sharing of streaming accounts.

Mariska Hargitay’s long run as Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Svu significantly affected how she saw the real world. She learned that the heinous crimes described in the title card of the show were not just the product of the writer’s imagination. Benson realized that these were real-life crimes happening around her, giving her secondary trauma in the process.

Last season, NBC aired 15 scripted series and, for one reason or another, only nine of them are expected to return this season -- and five of them are produced by Dick Wolf. How many NBC shows will be cancelled or renewed by the end of the 2024-25 TV season? Stay tuned.
NBC shows this season (so far): Brilliant Minds, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Pd, Dateline NBC, Found, Happy's Place, The Irrational, Law & Order, Law & Order: Svu, Lopez vs Lopez, Night Court, St. Denis Medical and The Voice.
There's lots of data that NBC execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here's how the network's 2023-24 TV shows are doing.

Halo‘s Pablo Schreiber once played a villain who gave nightmares to Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Svu. Schreiber played the role of William Lewis, a serial r*pist and killer, in the series, who had an expanded arc that lasted for seven episodes. Schreiber’s character remains one of the best-remembered villains of the long-running series, especially after he traumatized Svu‘s main protagonist Benson.

However, not everyone was a big fan of Schreiber’s William Lewis storyline. Some felt that the storyline was stretched out and they also shared that they hated how the episodes were handled. Interestingly, Halo, in which Schreiber played the lead, was canceled after two seasons at Paramount+.

Law & Order: Svu is nothing if not long-lasting. The procedural drama is currently on its 26th season, making it the longest-running live-action TV series in American history. You don't get to nearly three decades of dominance without a reliable stable of actors, but one of Svu's most recognizable faces was almost axed after four episodes.
Ice-t was introduced Sergeant Odafin "Fin" Tutuola in Law & Order: Svu season 2. He was originally hired on to appear in four episodes, in what would have amounted to a glorified cameo, but the show writers and producers quickly took notice of Ice-t's chemistry with the rest of the cast.

When Tamara Tunie signed on as the matriarch of CBS’s upcoming soap opera Beyond the Gates, there was a celebration and a sigh of relief from TV fans. This is because she’s a known and respected name in daytime and primetime. Her stellar reputation comes from her years playing attorney Jessica Griffin on the late great soap opera As the World Turns. Then there’s her 20-plus years of primetime success starring as Dr. Melinda Warner on Law & Order: Tunie is a multitalented performer who can pretty much do anything—television, film, theater, in front of the camera, and behind the scenes.

The spinoff concept is as old as television itself, but its origins were humble.
Spinoffs began as creative experiments, allowing networks to capitalize on popular characters and extend the success of a hit show.
The idea was simple: take a beloved character, place them in a new setting, and hope the magic of the original show followed.
(Ollie Upton/HBO)
One of the first examples of this was The Andy Griffith Show (1960), a spinoff of The Danny Thomas Show.
Audiences quickly fell in love with Sheriff Andy Taylor’s small-town wisdom and charm, and the show became a hit in its own right.
Its success even spawned its own spinoffs, like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., which followed the lovable but bumbling Gomer as he joined the Marines.
These early spinoffs were often straightforward, focusing on quirky characters and simple premises.

[This story contains spoilers for the series finale of Superman & Lois.]
The series finale of Superman & Lois aired Monday night on The CW. It marked not just the end of the show’s four-season run, but also an entire programming philosophy at the network.
Superman & Lois was the last series based on DC Comics characters to air at the network. It was also the last connection to The CW’s Arrowverse (even if it wasn’t technically part of the main continuity of that franchise), which defined the 2010s for the network and became one of the more successful multi-show franchises in TV history.
The ending of Superman & Lois, which — spoiler alert — flashes forward several decades to show the end of its title characters’ (Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch) lives, precludes any continuation of the show elsewhere — as do new regimes at both The CW and DC parent Warner Bros. If you're reading this, congrats on having likely finished watching "Bones," whether it's for the first or fifth time. The Fox show about a forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel), an FBI special agent (David Boreanaz), and the love and rotting skeletons between them is a daunting watchlist prospect, topping out at a whopping 246 episodes, but it's worth it if you love a good procedural. "Bones" debuted during an arguable high point in crime drama history, premiering in 2005 and wrapping up its lengthy run in 2017. The show isn't often recognized as particularly groundbreaking, but it certainly (re)started a trend toward forensics-based crime sagas led by partners who make moon eyes at each other every episode.
So what do you do when you finish watching a show this long? If you love TV as much as we do, the answer is naturally to find another show that'll make you feel the same thrill as "Bones" did.

Keke Palmer has turned into quite the icon in the world of acting. After starring in Jordan Peele’s Nope, she changed her reputation as a child star into something much greater and rarely seen: a critically acclaimed actress. She has been making her rounds even outside of acting, being a beloved singer, and having just released a book called Master of Me.

Modern Family‘s Alex Dunphy once encountered Svu‘s own Olivia Benson. Ariel Winter appeared in Season 21 Episode 2 of Law & Order: Svu, titled The Darkest Journey Home. The episode had a lot of nuances when it came to presenting its victim Raegan, played by Winter. Needless to say, it was much darker than her popular role in the sitcom.

Winter, who had been a lifelong fan of Svu, immediately jumped at the chance to portray the character. After John Oliver’s critical comments about the Law & Order franchise, one Svu star openly admitted the ‘copaganda’ in the show. Dick Wolf’s franchise paints the police force as these highly competent cops who would do anything in their capacity to seek justice for their victims. While actress Diane Neal shared that Svu is a spectacular show, she acknowledged that crime victims are often treated horribly.

Sometimes when shows run for a longer period of time, characters often become stale, due to lack of development and storyline. Something similar happened to Dick Wolf’s 1990 hit TV series Law & Order, wherein Elisabeth Röhm and Angie Harmon felt that their respective characters, Serena Southerlyn and Abbie Carmichael had reached their ultimatum.
A still from Dick Wolf’s Law & Order | image: NBC
Well, that’s when Dick Wolf decided it was time for him to let them go. And quite unexpectedly the creator came up with a dramatic exit for Elisabeth Röhm’s Serena Southerlyn. Apparently, with a wink and a nudge to the audience, Wolf turned Serena gay, and let her go without explanation. But while this whole plan worked wonders in 2005, it surely would have gotten the show canceled, today.

Christopher Meloni and new guest star Olivia Thirlby filmed a very intense Law & Order: Organized Crime scene!
While on location in Queens, New York on Wednesday (November 27), the 63-year-old actor was seen freeing the 38-year-old actress from some sort of explosive-looking chair device with hooded NYPD figures surrounding her as well. Olivia joined the series as a recurring guest star this season.
It’s been a busy news week for the Law and Order spinoff series, as we just learned that showrunner John Shiban has exited the series and original showrunner Matt Olmstead stepped in to help with the final few episodes of the season.
A premiere date for season five has not yet been announced, but we know it will consist of 10 episodes, and will debut on Peacock instead of NBC. John was the sixth showrunner to leave Organized Crime. He was appointed as showrunner ahead of season four.

Over the years, Law & Order has grown to become a show that stands by victims at all costs. With the inclusion of Svu in the universe, the Dick Wolf-created franchise is known for its sensitive handling of s*x-related crimes. However, one of the older episodes of the Og show dealt with sexual assault in a way that would make fans cringe.
