Five years after the film’s original release, Brett and Drew Pierce (“Deadheads”) and their Little Runway Productions will begin production on “The Wretched 2” this September in Oregon, with casting underway.

The Pierce brothers — who are returning as writers, directors and producers — said in a statement to Variety, “Independent horror has been staking out its claim at the box office in the last couple of years with films like ‘Terrifier 3’ and ‘Late Night With the Devil,’ and audiences are craving more from these original stories and voices. It just seems like the right time to bring our Witch back as she was born out of us wanting more from our creature features that we just weren’t getting. We’re going to push this story and the body horror into uncomfortable places.”

I have become so accustomed to defining children’s or family films in this era as animated that when you come upon one that doesn’t fall into that easy definition it is a welcome shock to the system. While many a fantasy movie has transported audiences to new and expansive worlds with epic stories of big adventures, historically the genre has also been limited by both technology and budgets that restrain movies from achieving the potential of the stories being told.

The dark fantasy genre, however, often tells smaller scale stories inspired by fairy tales, focusing on eerie atmosphere, stellar creature and set design rather than VFX spectacle. Still, many dark fantasy movies have fantastic special effects that feel as grand and epic as big budget blockbusters. Robert Zemeckis’ latest, which serves as a reunion with his “Forrest Gump” stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, along with that film’s writer Eric Roth, serves as an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s celebrated graphic novel. The movie takes place with a single, locked off location – a suburban living room. Through that living room, though, Zemeckis shows a truly incredible passage of time and zeroes in on the life of a couple (Hanks and Wright) as they maneuver through their own story.

“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is a certified Criterion title, believe it or not.

The beloved franchise about a beloved occult teen, iconically played by Melissa Joan Hart, is officially amongst the new streaming selections for the Criterion Channel. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” centered on Sabrina (Hart), a high school student who lives with her two aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick) as she navigates coming into her powers. Her cat Salem (Frank Conniff) also provides snarky spiritual guidance.

The ABC-produced franchise was based on the comic book series that debuted in 1971. The “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” show is available to stream on Paramount+ as of 2023.

The 1996 TV movie was a spinoff of the TV series, and was followed by 1998’s “Sabrina Goes to Rome” and 1999’s “Sabrina Down Under.”

Now, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” joins Criterion’s “Witches” programming for October 2024, ushering in the 40-year anniversary of the Criterion platform.

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.

Despite how prevalent they are in spooky media, you’d be surprised at how rare it used to be for traditionally recognizable witches to be the main antagonists in scary movies. Sure, we got the eerie crones of the pseudo-documentary Haxan and even a dancing coven in Suspiria, but for the longest time, witches were relegated to humorous stereotypes akin to the Sanderson Sisters rather than anything truly terrifying. It’s only recently that modern classics like The Witch and Gretel and Hansel have made potions and broomsticks scary again, revisiting the disturbing origins of these myths in ways that genre films of the 20th century simply couldn’t handle.

There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, and one of my favorites just so happens to be a bizarre trilogy that dared to ask what would happen if a potion-brewing maniac from the early days of America found himself transported to modern times.

Haunted Mansion is a fantasy horror film directed by Justin Simien, from a screenplay by Katie Dippold. Based on Disney’s theme park of the same name, the film revolves around a mother and a son who hire a motley crew to get rid of the supernatural entities living in their house. Netflix has landed the feature film rights to Kotaro Isaka’s novel, “Seesaw Monster.” The film version is set to star Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault as rivals forced to work together.

Isaka is best known for writing “Maria Beetle,” which was adapted into 2022’s comedic thriller “Bullet Train” starring Brad Pitt. “Seesaw Monster” is not related to the Japanese author’s “Hitman” trilogy, which includes “Maria Beetle” and “Three Assassins,” the inspiration behind the 2015 movie “Grasshopper.”

Plot details for “Seesaw Monster” haven’t been revealed, but Netflix describes the movie as “an action-comedy two-hander” between Hathaway and Hayek Pinault. Olivia Milch, whose credits include writing, directing and producing Netflix’s “Dude” and co-writing “Ocean’s 8,” is penning the screenplay. It’s unclear who will direct the film.

The Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) has unveiled the line-up for its 50th edition, with the Mads Mikkelsen-starring Riders Of Justice set to open the fest.

You can see the full line-up below. The event has had to change its traditional format for 2021 due to ongoing pandemic disruption. It will now run as a two-stage event, initially with a hybrid showcase of films February 1-7, followed by a physical event June 2-6.

The flagship Tiger Competition has confirmed 16 titles, 14 of which are world premieres. There are a further 15 titles in the Big Screen competition, which looks to bridge the gap between popular and arthouse cinema, while the non-competitive Limelight section will feature 13 titles, most of which have played other festivals, such as Magnus von Horn’s Sweat and Jasmila Žbanić’s Quo Vadis, Aida?.

Amazon Studios will produce “Invasion,” a sci-fi thriller that will be directed by BAFTA-winner Michael Pearce and will star Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

In “Invasion,” two young brothers go on the run with their father, a decorated Marine, who is on a rescue mission to save his boys from an inhuman threat. As their journey takes them in increasingly dangerous and unexpected directions, the boys will need to confront hard truths and leave their childhoods behind.

“Beast” filmmaker Pearce is directing from a script he co-wrote with Joe Barton. The producers on “Invasion” are Raw’s Dimitri Doganis, Piers Vellacott and Derrin Schlesinger.

The project will be presented in association with Film4, which developed it with Raw. Film4’s Daniel Battsek, Ollie Madden and Julia Oh are executive producing.

The script is written by Pearce with Joe Barton (The Ritual). What’s On Netflix has shared an updated list of everything that hit the platform today and as you can see down below, it includes quite a few titles that weren’t on the original list. For instance, we’ve got Will Ferrell’s classic comedy Elf, forgotten Robert De Niro movie Heist, Denzel Washington’s hugely underrated The Taking of Pelham 123 and several more.

Yes, as it’s July 1st today, the streamer has opened the floodgates and unleashed a whole bunch of new movies and TV shows. And as you can see from the complete list below, we’ve got quite the selection to choose from. Be it the excellent and sorely underrated sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas, horror juggernaut Paranormal Activity, the visually stunning Sucker Punch or early Johnny Depp films like Donnie Brasco and Sleepy Hollow, you surely won’t have trouble finding something to flip on tonight and enjoy.

But don’t just take our word for it.

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.

First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

The summer movie season, as we usually know it, isn’t happening this year, with few big releases planning to drop over the next couple of months, even if cinemas are just starting to reopen. Instead, then, it’s falling on Netflix and the various other streaming services to pull their weight and give movie lovers a range of new content to feast on. Thankfully, July isn’t looking too shabby for original films and TV, not to mention lots of classics or underrated gems appearing on all the usual sites.

Of course, Netflix has the most original output coming across next month. TV fans, in particular, have got much to look forward to, including season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. In fact, it’s a good month for fantasy series based off comic books all-round, as we’ve also got Arthurian retelling Cursed and super-powered action show Warrior Nun coming as well.

Netflix is out with its list of everything coming and going in July, and it includes Netflix originals like “Warrior Nun,” season one of “The Baby-Sitters Club,” the final football season of “Last Chance U,” and “The Kissing Booth 2.”

Some classic movies and beloved romantic comedies coming to the streamer include the musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” the Ryan Reynolds rom-com “Definitely Maybe,” the Mandy Moore-lead “A Walk to Remember,” and the Jim Carrey 2004 film “A Series of Unfortunate Events.”

Leaving at the end of the month are favorites like the Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams heartbreaker “Blue Valentine,” the Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller love story “Spectacular Now,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” and all three “Back to the Future” movies.

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.

The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.

There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

The great cycle of Netflix content continues, and throughout next month a number of horror movies will be added to the digital library, as if real life isn’t terrifying enough right now.

First up is Red Riding Hood, another retelling of possibly the world’s most famous fairy tale, this one seeing a young woman living in a village on the edge of a forest plagued by a werewolf becoming essential in unraveling the mystery of the creature’s identity as the townsfolk attempt to put an end to the threat.

Although far from the first adaptation of Washington Irving’s famous short story, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is also on the way and is one of the best, a murder mystery that expands the brief tale into a snapshot of colonial life and superstition, with black magic, brutal death and supernatural mayhem.
