You've scaled the Wall in Westeros. You've crept past things older and fouler than orcs in the Mines of Moria. You've strolled through the unstable world of The Dreaming. You've immersed yourself in the magic of all these incredible — and incredibly famous — fantasy worlds. Now, you want something a little different.
Fantasy has evolved on television, offering much more than hackneyed hack-and-slashing and melodramatic magic that appeared in the half-baked miniseries and cartoons of the 20th century. That's not to say that all previous fantasy shows were bad, of course. British television expertly adapted literature classics, for example. However, the bar has clearly been raised, and modern streaming services now offer a nearly endless variety of fantasy series to explore.
In fact, there are now so many to choose from that some of these shows have inevitably fallen through the cracks. So, consider this list a gateway to new worlds...

Walt Disney never quite had a “court composer” for his movies, although legends like Leigh Harline, Frank Churchill and Paul J. Smith contributed iconic scores and song melodies to Disney classics from Snow White and Pinocchio to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But for the past three decades, the music in Walt Disney features — and the features themselves — has been redefined to recapture and rebrand the musical, a medium long thought dead in film and even on the Broadway stage. And if there is one man who is largely responsible for this resurgence, it’s Alan Menken.
The composer’s melodies for songs — “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid, the title song to Beauty and the Beast, “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas, “True Love’s Kiss” from Enchanted — have become as indelible as anything produced in the world of popular music. Says...

Emma Thompson stars in Netflix's new movie "Matilda," based on the musical of the same name which, in turn, is based upon Roald Dahl's 1988 novel. In the film, Thompson stars as Miss Agatha Trunchbull, the devious, horrible headmistress of Matilda's school who openly hates the kids she's in charge of. Miss Trunchbull has multiple songs in the show, which might leave viewers wondering if Thompson did her own singing for the part. Yes, Thompson is really singing in "Matilda."
Thompson and the rest of the cast were actually live-singing on set, she said during a Dec. 7 interview on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon." During her appearance, the host played a clip of her singing "The Smell of Rebellion," during which she climbs a large structure. She explained, "That last note, my legs were shaking because I was on top of that 80 foot structure with really nothing...

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” has entered the Best Picture conversation overnight following a successful premiere at the London Film Festival. But should we have counted it out in the first place? Del Toro’s recent track record—Best Picture winner “The Shape of Water” and nominee “Nightmare Alley”—makes him a hard filmmaker to ignore. He’s talked at length in promotional material about his personal relationship to the tale of the wooden boy and about the bond it fostered with his mother.
That’s the kind of narrative voters will be primed for in yet another year that sees an autobiographical drama as its Best Picture frontrunner. But there is a more compelling argument for the film’s pathway than that.

The Beauty and the Beast fable ranks as one of the most filmed fairy tales ever written. There have been so many different versions, with arguably the animated Disney version from 1991 (and its remake) being the one that’s endured the most. But, many other versions exist, including the landmark Jean Cocteau version and this week’s subject of Gone But Not Forgotten, the 1987 TV version, starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman as the titular pair.
Boasting a writing staff that included none other than Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin, the TV version of Beauty and the Beast reimagined the fable as a contemporary fantasy show. Hamilton’s Beauty, aka Catherine, was no longer a peasant farm girl but a high-powered New York attorney. After a brutal attack, she’s nursed back to health by Ron Perlman’s Vincent, a kind of man/lion hybrid living in an underground society of outcasts.

Listening to the quarter billion monthly visitors who populate its pages online, IMDb has ranked the top ten films of 2017, based on popularity on its own site.
New Line’s surprise blockbuster “It” ranked as the No. 1 film. “Remakes, reboots and comic books reigned supreme at the box office in 2017, but one of the biggest surprises of the big screen this year is ‘It,'” said Keith Simanton, IMDb’s Senior Film Editor.
“Wonder Woman” and “Beauty and the Beast” clock in at second and third, proving the public’s interest.

Disney is making a film adaptation for one of the world's most beloved ballets, the Nutcracker. True to Disney, there is far more to the legend than you ever knew before.
The first time I ever saw The Nutcracker, I was about 8 years old. It was part of a school trip to give the kids from a one-road town in outskirts of Houston some culture. I remember entering the grandious Performance Arts Theatre and justing gawking at the decorations they put together for Christmas. It was quite the spectacle to behold. Then, the lights flickered on and off and it was time to file into the theatre to watch the performance. I remember sitting in that dark, bustling row on the edge of my seat, eager to experience this thing called The Nutcracker my mom had always told me about. Then, it began and much like Peter Griffin would in that situation,...

Chris here, with a quick update on the visual effects Oscar race. Two weeks ago this year's longlist of twenty eligible CGI wonders dropped but the VFX branch is already down to the next bake off round, slicing those contenders in half. Those not tough enough to stick around included many of the early year releases (like Beauty and the Beast and Logan) and every superhero film with the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
But fear not, humble porg, for you and the fish nuns of The Last Jedi are still in the hunt. Here's the ten films that advance:
Alien: Covenant Blade Runner 2049 Dunkirk Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Kong: Skull Island Okja The Shape of Water Star Wars: The Last Jedi Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets War for the Planet of the Apes
Interesting to see smaller art house fare...

“Remember Me” from Disney/Pixar’s animated musical “Coco” is the likeliest winner of the Best Original Song Oscar to come along in a while (it’s written by “Let It Go” songwriters Kristen Anderson Lopez and Robert Lopez). With this category, the Academy music branch tends to lean into musicals and major pop stars singing songs over the closing credits. This year, 70 songs are eligible for the Oscars.
Also on the musical front, Alan Menken, Howard Ashman & Tim Rice wrote the song “Evermore” for “Beauty and the Beast,” performed by Josh Groban, while “La La Land” lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Justin Paul wrote “This is Me” for “The Greatest Showman.”
Among established musicians, this year Sufjan Stevens wrote and sings “The Mystery of Love” for “Call My By Your Name,” while Elvis Costello sings haunting “You Shouldn’t Look at Me That Way” on the soundtrack for “Film...

Even with the joys of motherhood, there can be a few frustrations along the way.
Serena Williams shared one of those on her Instagram on Sunday, where she detailed the painful teething process her baby daughter, Alexis, is going through.
"Teething -- aka the devil -- is so hard. Poor Alexis Olympia has been so uncomfortable. She cried so much (she never cries) I had to hold her until she fell asleep," the tennis star wrote in the caption alongside a sweet photo of three-month-old Alexis.
Williams went on to detail the various remedies she's tried to ease her daughter's pain.
"I've tried amber beads... cold towels.... chew on mommies fingers.... homeopathic water (lol on that one) but nothing is working," she continued.
The newlywed ultimately reached out for recommendations from her followers on the site.
"It's breaking my heart," she wrote. "I almost need my mom to come and hold me to sleep cause I'm so stressed...

Magical, evocative The Shape Of Water blends Cold War thriller, romance and monster movie genres in director Guillermo Del Toro’s best film since Pan’S Labyrinth. In fact, The Shape Of Water is one of the year’s best.
Elisa (Sally Hawkins) lives a lonely life of unchanging routine as cleaning woman at a hidden military research facility during the Cold War. Mute but not deaf, Elisa’s best friend is her co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer), and she rents space in an apartment above an old movie theater from platonic friend Giles (Richard Jenkins), who is a marginalized person like them. Elisa’s quiet routine is changed forever by the arrival of ambitious, harsh military operative Richard Strickland and a mysterious creature in a water tank.

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s new wide-release movies. Coco has been dominating the box office for the last three weeks, but that will come to an end this weekend as one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, finally gets released. It’ll easily debut at number one, but it will be interesting to see just how high it debuts. Elsewhere, the animated movie, Ferdinand, looks to provide some families with counter-programming before the holiday season.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now so close we can almost feel the crackle of energy emanating from Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber.
Yes, December 15th is almost upon us, and in an attempt to gauge the sequel’s success, THR has now compiled a report claiming The Last Jedi will clear $425 million worldwide by Sunday, December 17th, when it’ll presumably enter Hollywood’s pantheon as one of the five best global openings of all time – not accounting for inflation, of course.
That estimated cume also factors in The Last Jedi‘s performance in North America, where the Rian Johnson-directed sequel is expected to score a $200 million-plus haul and become the biggest domestic opening of 2017, easily leap-frogging Beauty and the Beast ($178 million).

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has reached its diamond anniversary. Alfre Woodard and Sharon Stone announced the nominations. Here are the Globe nominations in all their glory and folly (it's always a combo of the two with any awards body... though people tend to be harsher on the Globes in this perception matter). The biggest surprise was the big love for Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World (which no other awards group had screened to date) but the Golden Globes do like to be first as is always evident in their TV nominations which are generally quite favorable to new series (note the love for The Handmaid's Tale, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and more). As is also their habit they embraced a musical for their comedy/musical category giving a Best Picture nomination to The Greatest Showman.

As is also their habit they embraced a musical for their comedy/musical category giving a Best Picture nomination to The Greatest Showman.
Among the saddest snubs (discussed in fuller...

Carrie Fisher’s tragic passing last year left Star Wars fans around the world heartbroken, and ever since, one of the biggest questions has been how will Lucasfilm handle the actress’ untimely death moving forward? We know that she’s set to feature in The Last Jedi, and holds a fairly large role in it, from what we hear, but what comes after that?
With the decision being made not to digitally recreate her for Episode IX, we shouldn’t expect to see Princess Leia in Abrams’ trilogy closer, but will the studio still find some way to acknowledge her passing and honor her? Well, if a new report is to be believed, then yes, they definitely will.
According to ComicBook.com, The Last Jedi includes a touching dedication to the actress, as once the credits finish up, a message is displayed on screen that reads: “For our special princess – Carrie Fisher.

Daisy Ridley’s Rey, the Jakku orphan who helped usher in a new generation of heroes through The Force Awakens, looks set to experience something of an existential crisis in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Caught between the First Order and the “vulnerable” Resistance, last we checked in on Ridley’s heroine she had made contact with Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Master who has spent years in exile following the destruction of his Jedi Academy, presumably at the hands of Kylo Ren.
But when it comes to Rey, in particular, The Last Jedi‘s second full trailer hinted at a potential dark turn for Daisy Ridley’s fan-favorite. Either that, or the video editors at Lucasfilm are purposely keeping Star Wars fans on their toes with a bout of clever editing. Because let’s face it, there’s a good chance that final shot is either lifted out of context,...

Folks, here is a sense of just how deep into the end of the year we’ve gotten. The Golden Globe Awards will announce their nominations early on next week. Monday morning, to be specific. One of the highest profile nominating bodies out there, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (or HFPA, for short) will have their say and potentially shape the race. Keep in mind that they have limited impact on the Oscars, but Academy Award voters do pay some degree of attention to what goes on here. As such, it’s worth our time. One last shot at acing the nominations is what you’ll see here. There’s definitely still some mystery here, though the season is already taking shape with other precursors. Below is my final crack at figuring out the Globes. It should be a good morning for Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, Get Out,...

Captain Phasma, Chrometrooper, Brienne of Tarth 2.0 – whatever moniker you choose, Gwendoline Christie’s high-ranking First Order commander is an undisputed badass, which only makes it all the more disappointing that her character was unfairly short-changed in The Force Awakens.
And though it’s impossible to gauge how much screen time will be allocated to Phasma in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, ComicBook.com recently caught up with Christie and Domnhall Gleeson (General Armitage Hux) to discuss the inner workings of the First Order. And it seems Phasma still has a chip on her chrome shoulder following the events of The Force Awakens, when she was dumped into a garbage shoot on Starkiller Base.
I think they put her in to the garbage shoot and it’s taken a long time for that smell to wear away, and I think just, obviously there are the circumstances but the smell you see.

As David Ayer has reminded us, “Suicide Squad” is an Oscar winner. At this time of year, every movie is a possible Oscar contender until it isn’t, so before you laugh at Disney rolling the dice on “Beauty And The Beast,” you never know what could happen.
The studio has dropped a For Your Consideration trailer for the live action redo of their animated classic.
