When news broke in early February that Mariah Carey had booked a return ticket to Las Vegas to mount another residency, it was revealed that she would design the set list as a celebration of her 2005 blockbuster album, The Emancipation of Mimi.

The Red Sea International Film Festival, has unveiled the 26 projects selected as part of its industry-focused Red Sea Souk Market, running from December 2 to 5.

Projects in development include Palestinian director Scandar Copti’s A Childhood, Lebanese-French filmmaker Danielle Arbid’s Love Conquers All and Madness And Honey Days by Iraq’s Ahmed Yassin Al-Daradji.

Within the Market selection are twelve Red Sea Lodge projects which were developed during the year through intensive workshops and in partnership with the Torino Film Lab. Four of these projects will be awarded the annual Red Sea Lodge production prizes of $50,000 each.

All 26 selected projects will compete for cash prizes offered by the Red Sea Fund, to be awarded by an international jury of producers: $35,000 for development, $25,000 for the Jury Special Mention Award and $100,000 for production

There is a moment forty minutes into Joe Wright’s Cyrano where everything kicks up a notch. As a military regiment practices their swordcraft on a stunning pier in Sicily the titular Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) crafts an agreement with new recruit Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). He will write beautiful poetry as correspondence to Roxanne (Haley Bennett) from Christian—who lacks the words—thereby espousing his own love for the same woman. “I will make you eloquent while you make me handsome,” Cyrano explains, convinced they do not live in a world wherein someone like him could be with someone like her. Christian breaks into song and the camera runs away, darting through the regiment training on the pier. Soon enough we cut above the action, taking in the pier and the seas that surround it. The sequence is exhilarating and the film’s pace does not slow from there.

There was something moving and even poignant in watching the MGM Lion logo roaring once again at the opening of director Joe Wright’s new musical adaptation of Cyrano last night at the Telluride Film Festival, where this lovely new telling of the classic story of Cyrano de Bergerac had its world premiere. Both MGM and de Bergerac have had a storied history in show business, and both are still very alive through a series of reincarnations. MGM in its golden era was the movie musical factory, but it has been some time since the studio has taken on one of this scale. It is just like old times, eh? Fortunately, this Cyrano is worthy of that tradition — and then some.

Wright, no stranger to period pieces like Pride & Prejudice, Darkest Hour, Atonement and Anna Karenina, has brought almost a simplicity and quiet dignity to his first musical film.

Generations makes a strong case that Arcade Fire’s second most famous Butler brother, Will, could be the group’s pop mastermind with its quirky, upbeat rockers about modern life. He opens the record with “Outta Here,” which he built with fuzzy analog keyboards and smartypants lyrics like, “Had enough bad news/Had enough of your generation.” It recalls Eno and Bowie in its synthiness but also Spoon in its sunny determination. “Close My Eyes” feels a bit like Suicide pretending to be a power-pop band with its quivering keys...

Arcade Fire’s Will Butler has shared a new song and video, “Close My Eyes,” from his upcoming solo album, Generations, out September 25th via Merge.

The song has a breezy, bouncing pop groove that opens up into a lush chorus that places Butler’s voice against a wall of backing harmonies. “I know you’re gonna come around and stand by me,” Butler sings, “But I’m tired of standing while the world’s dissolving/Close my eyes, close my eyes, close my eyes/And it’s almost alright.

Chicago – Prior to embarking on her highly successful solo career and becoming the queen of 1980s metal, Lita Ford was the lead guitarist of the aggressive, female rock band The Runaways in the 1970s. From playing heavy riffs on “Cherry Bomb” to a duet with the infamous Ozzy Osbourne on the song “Close My Eyes Forever,” Ford has seen and done it all in her 40 years in rock and roll.

She took a break from her current book tour for “Living Like a Runaway” to answer a few questions from HollywoodChicago.com’s Jeff Doles.

Believe it or not, but Albuquerque, New Mexico’s essential Experiments in Cinema is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Masterminded by the indomitable Bryan Konefsky, EiC v. 10.T.36 features a massive lineup of experimental films and special programs on April 15-19.

Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.

Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.

So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.

25. Deceived

You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.

During my senior year in high school, I took a trip to Panama City, Florida in the hopes of joining the ridiculous spectacle that is spring break. "I never wanted to be a movie star. And I didn't become an actor to become famous. I genuinely didn't. It was always theatre for me," dailymail.co.uk quoted Owen as saying.

Described as potentially “one note” in Empire Magazine (with the qualifying comment of “it's a bloody good note and nobody else could play it better”), Clive Owen is more versatile than many give him credit for.

Garth Davis went all the way to Mexico to shoot Ride, a long-form commercial for Coca-Cola’s new energy drink, Burn. Los Angeles had been an option for the cityscapes he wanted, but there was no way he could have got away with setting fire to skateboarders on busy city streets there.

Davis won a film lion and also a film craft lion at Cannes for a raw, smokey four minute video in which a gang of skateboarders race on motorways, dodge cars and jump off buildings with their clothing in flames.

A team of body fire experts were brought in from La for the shoot, which took just over a week.

Finally! We feel like we’ve been waiting forever to hear about the decadence that is Mariah Carey’s baby nurseries. Luckily Mimi and husband Nick Cannon didn’t dissapoint, dropping $100,000 on their kids’ rooms, including a $30,000 crib. “Everything matches, but pieces are individualized to celebrate the twins as separate entities,” the mom-to-be explained, opting to go with gender-neutral green for her son and daughter. “I feel like I’m bringing two individuals into the world, so I wanted to do more than cookie-cutter styles in blue and pink.” Besides, green will complement Mariah’s twins’ diamond iPods really nicely.

Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.

We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.

It's probably not sane to "tape-delay" blog the BAFTAs -- you probably already know who one, actually -- but this blog isn't exactly of sound mind during awards season (or, ahem, otherwise). I haven't heard about the winners yet. The second I opened a browser I sensed spoilers from all corners so I had to look away. Why doesn't the BBC-America broadcast it live? It's not like anyone who cares wouldn't watch it in the afternoon on a Sunday. But if you've already heard who won on the internet wouldn't that cut down your desire to tune in and thus lower the ratings? I don't get it. So that they could rerun broadcass of nature documentary Life of Mammals? I don't really care about the sharpness of a squirrel's front teeth or how kangaroo rats (omg. idon'tevenknow whatthoseare and I Don't Want To Know) store their seeds.

Ozzy Osbourne turns 61 years old today. Whenever my American friends ask me to name a good English director they've not heard of, I always push them towards the work of Stephen Poliakoff, whose Glorious 39 arrives this week. And those who take up my recommendation/challenge usually come back about three weeks later, after a bracing immersion in whatever traces of Poliakoff can be found in La's video stores, filled with gratitude and suddenly obsessed with Poliakoff's recurring themes: ancient family secrets, the power of images and documents to realign our understanding of histories both national and familial, and London as a city of secrets, forever yielding up surprises and shocks from its subterranean depths and farthest-flung outer suburbs; all somehow viewed by Poliakoff with the fresh-peeled eyeballs of a newly landed immigrant.

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.

It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." Arthur Russell was a master musician with an impressive ear for everything from mutant disco to boppy pop to solo cello koans, but most devastating of his many devastating attributes was his voice. It's devastating not only because he's gone—he died of AIDS-related illness in 1992—but also because he always sounded so piercing and intimate that he could make listeners shy and sheepish, no matter the context. His voice sounds bare and unadorned on Love Is Overtaking Me, another terrific offering to add to the Russell reissues and compilations that have piled up over the past few years.
