The Oscar heavyweight, Grammy-winning great and all-around icon, Barbra Streisand was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

“This is such a wonderful award to get because you know in advance you’re going to get it. You don’t have to sit there in squirm… And if you don’t have to put on such a happy face, ‘I’m so happy to lose!’ Anyway, you all know what I mean,” the legend joked.

Pivoting to more serious matters, Streisand revealed that she was proud to be a SAG-AFTRA member for over 60 years, “I can’t believe it. I remember dreaming of being an actress as a teenager, sitting in my bed in Brooklyn with a pint of coffee ice cream and a movie magazine.”

But in the end, Streisand dedicated her lifetime achievement speech to the actors among her in the auditorium.

Nick Nolte was born in the Midwest, finding his place in high school and college as a star football player. After being kicked out of his last college because of poor grades, he decided to try his hand at acting and one of film’s most successful performers was born.

Nolte moved to Los Angeles and began studying acting at the Pasadena Playhouse and the Stella Adler Institute. He then proceeded to start working in guest star roles on television. His big break came when he was cast in one of the lead roles in the miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man.” The series received a huge 23 Emmy nominations and 11 of its actors were nominated in various categories, including Nolte.

The dust still hasn’t settled on the 96th annual Academy Award nominations due to the uproar over the “Barbie” snubs for Best Actress for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig for Best Director. They still earned Oscar nominations for the cultural phenomena that was the No. 1 film of 2023 with an international box office of $1.4 billion. Robbie and Gerwig received noms as producer for the Best Picture nominee and Gerwig also was garnered a nomination for co-writing the adapted screenplay. But the film is about female empowerment, so it’s beyond ironic it was Ken (Ryan Gosling), not Barbie, who received Oscar recognition.

Gosling wasn’t happy: “Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.”

Barbra Streisand’s memoir “My Name is Barbra” was released on Tuesday, and one of the anecdotes in the long-in-the-works autobiography is one about how Judy Garland warned her not to let Hollywood give her the same treatment.

In 1963, Garland had her own TV show on CBS and dueted with the then-rising star Streisand on one episode.

“Judy and I became friends. … And I remember her saying something I never quite understood: ‘Don’t let them do to you what they did to me.’ I should have asked her what she meant, but I didn’t want to appear too nosy,” Streisand wrote in an excerpt shared with People.

“Six years after we did [her show], she was dead at the age of 47,” Streisand lamented. “What a tragedy… and such a loss. She was an extraordinary talent.”

In a first-time first-person account of her life and career, legendary singer, actress, director and producer Barbra Streisand will publish her memoir, My Name is Barbra, on November 7, 2023 via Penguin Random House imprint Viking. The Penguin Group made it official on Tuesday, calling the tome “engrossing and delightful.” There have been dozens of books written about the now 80-year-old artist, but this will be the first to tell her story in her own words.

And by account, it’s a lot of words. Pre-order listings have it clocking in at 1,040 pages. Fitting for a woman whose groundbreaking career has spanned six decades and included two Oscars, five Emmys, 10 Grammys, 11 Golden Globes and a Tony as well as countless other awards.

Streisand is among the handful of Egot winners and has one of the most recognizable voices in the history of popular music. She has been nominated for a Grammy 46 times.

The release date for Barbra Streisand’s anticipated memoir has been announced.

Viking, a Penguin Random House imprint, announced Tuesday that Streisand’s My Name Is Barbra will be published on Nov. 7.

With a career that has spanned six decades and featured dozens of books written about her, Streisand will finally chronicle her story in her own words.

Female directors were once again shut out in the director category at the Academy Awards after two years of seeing progress in the space, with women winning the prestigious award in back-to-back years.

The nominees this year are Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Todd Field (Tar) and Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness).

That means there were no women nominated despite a buzzy awards year for female filmmakers, like The Woman King‘s Gina Prince-Bythewood and Women Talking‘s Sarah Polley, or Till‘s Chinonye Chukwu, She Said‘s Maria Schrader and Aftersun‘s Charlotte Wells.

Scripted by Bedford and Cesare Gagliardoni, Eugene the Marine will tell the story of

Gene, a widower and former Marine who finds his highly regimented life deteriorating after his son begins pressuring him to sell his longtime home. When a mysteriously familiar woman appears in his life, Gene starts to loosen up, until his nightmares and reality begin to blur.

Nolte is playing Gene, while Hershey takes on the role of Frances, that “mysteriously familiar woman”. The synopsis for the film on IMDb takes the story even further into thriller territory, saying that “a series of gruesome murders begin targeting the people around” Gene.

Nolte will play Gene, a former marine and widower who finds his highly regimented life deteriorating after his son begins pressuring him to sell his longtime home. Hershey, well known for her work in movies including Hannah and Her Sisters, Beaches, The Portrait of a Lady and Black Swan, will play Frances, a mysteriously familiar woman who sparks a new chapter in his life.

Stephen Vincent will produce. Matthew Shreder of Concourse Media is executive-producing and selling during the TIFF market.

Apple TV+ is reportedly developing a television version of The Prince of Tides, the 1991 Oscar-nominated film which starred Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte. According to Variety, the series would serve as a remake of the movie, which was an adaptation of Pat Conroy’s 1986 novel of the same name. Similar to the film, the series would follow Tom Wingo, a man who travels to New York after his sister attempts suicide. Currently, Tate Taylor is attached to write and executive produce the series with John Norris executive producing under their shared Wyolah Entertainment banner. Meanwhile, Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall are also set to executive produce the project which hails from Sony Pictures Television. Scripts are reportedly still being finished.

The Prince of Tides is the latest high-profile feature film that is being eyed for a television spinoff.

Deadline understands that The Help director Tate Taylor is developing a small-screen adaptation of the 1991 Barbra Streisand-fronted film for Apple.

The project is believed to be in the very early stages of development.

The film tells the story of a New York psychiatrist (Streisand) who is treating Sally (Melinda Dillon), an emotionally scarred woman who finds it helpful to discuss her South Carolina family’s troubled history with her twin brother (Nick Nolte). He and the psychiatrist find themselves drawn together by their equally turbulent pasts, and they form an alliance that ultimately leads to romance.

Based on Pat Conroy’s book and adapted for screen by Conroy and Becky Johnston, the film was directed by Streisand.

The series project comes from Sony Pictures Television, whose sister movie arm Columbia Pictures released the film,...

Apple is developing a series version of “The Prince of Tides.”

The series would be a remake of the 1991 film of the same name, which was itself an adaptation of the 1986 novel by Pat Conroy. Like the film, the series would follow Tom Wingo, who travels to New York after his sister attempts suicide. While there, he develops a relationship with his sister’s therapist, Susan Lowenstein, while also delving into painful memories from his childhood.

Tate Taylor will write and executive produce the adaptation, with John Norris executive producing with Taylor under their Wyolah Entertainment banner. Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall also executive produce. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.

Sources say that scripts are still being completed for the series. Apple does not comment on projects in development.

The fight for women to be recognized for their directorial achievements stretches back for decades, but, too often, the screenwriters aren’t given that same spotlight. However, this year presents a unique situation where female filmmakers have also penned the top awards contenders for adapted screenplay. These leading contenders include Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”), Rebecca Hall (“Passing”) and Siân Heder (“Coda”).

If three of the writer-directors are nominated for best adapted screenplay, it’ll be the most female-written films recognized since 1991, which included “Europa Europa” (Agnieszka Holland), “Fried Green Tomatoes” (Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski) and “The Prince of Tides”. If all four manage to receive noms, it would be the most in Academy history, as well as the most that have been directed by women.

Three of the women were recognized by the USC Scripter Awards, whose previous nominees have a solid translation to Academy attention.
