I remember when I watched O Quatrilho for the first time (1995) in Brazil and I was so impressed with the plot, the acting, the scenery and everything else. I was also so very sad when they didn't win the Oscar! Shame they competed with another foreign film - the Dutch film "Antonia's Line" - that had a very different story line, and it was obviously what the academy was looking for that specific year. Now I am sure that had "O Quatrilho" competed against a similar film, they would have won. However, just the fact that the film was nominated shows how good it is. I loved it for so many reasons, but here are 2 of them: 1) it portrays the struggles and ups and downs of the Italian families that went to Brazil in the beginning of the 20th century to find a better life, which gives you another glance of our history; 2) It has romance, drama, love, betrayal, resilience, etc., which caters not only for romantic women (like me), but also for men. Watch it, if you haven't yet. Where can I get the DVD?
This movie calls my attention in so many ways. It tells the story of two of the hundreds of families that came from Italy to Brazil in late 19th century and beginning of the 20th, looking for a better life for them and their children.
The movie talks about a couple of Italian families, with their own costumes and habits. The main characters are two women an two men, trying to fit in a conservative society. That's the basic thing about the film, that was filmed in the south of Brazil, with some really beautiful shots of this Brazilian region.
"O Quatrilho" not just deserved an Oscar nomination as Best Foreign Language Film, but also has to be remembered as one of the best Brazilian movies ever made. If you haven't seen it, rent it and take a look in this masterpiece of Bruno Barreto's brother: Fábio Barreto.

Its about two immigrant couples in foreign country , and each of the couples doesn't have any much FEELING (love) for their perspective spouses. so two of them started an affair and ran off , while other remaining BROKEN heart start to begin their own feelings instead of being sad.
A good movie , about Finding LOVE in a strange unexpected way. and once the love is found that do anything necessary to keep the feelings going on. even somebody got hurt badly.
A bad movie , regarding to Morality . marriage is all about Faith , obedience , respectful and honesty. and once a married person doing something Infidelity , then it destroys all laws of marriage. So this movie is bad , that a person CANT control his or her feeling over LUST or feelings.
