Space: the final frontier. But instead of seeking out new life and new civilizations, the protagonists in these films are often trying to escape them. The vast, cold void of space is the perfect setting for horror. The isolation, the unknown, the realization that in space, no one can hear you scream. From derelict spaceships to alien planets, the cosmos offers a backdrop where our deepest fears can manifest far from the safety of Earth.
So, buckle up, space cadets, as we journey through the darkest corners of the universe with these ten spine-chilling space horror movies.
Screen Gems 10. Ghost of Mars (2001)
John Carpenter takes us to a Martian colony where miners unwittingly release ancient, malevolent spirits. Oops! As these spirits possess the miners, turning them into murderous zombies, a police officer (played by Natasha Henstridge) and a criminal (Ice Cube), and a whole motley crew must team up to survive.

One of the most foundational pillars of horror also happens to be one of its more nebulously defined subgenres: the creature feature. At its most ubiquitous of definitions, the creature feature is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course.
A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters that turn on their makers, and everything in between. Often, a creature feature highlights nature running amok. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the horror movies that bring the monster mayhem in various ways, but all showcase excellent practical effects.
More specifically, this week belongs to underseen creature features that deserve more attention. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

The film is set to start production this autumn. Billed as a “thrilling kidnap and ransom story,” the pic follows Mav, who wakes up in a confined space next to a dead body. She is tied and gagged and realizes she has been kidnapped. Her kidnapper explains that he knows she is the daughter of the richest woman in the State. He wants a $20,000,000 ransom paid in 12 hours, or he will kill her like the other passenger. A cat-and-mouse game ensues as her mother is unwilling to pay the ransom and neither the kidnappee nor the kidnapper are what they seem.

It was bound to happen. Netflix started making and showing original movies, then Amazon, and then Tubi followed suit with Swim. But as Tubi is not a thing here in the UK (thanks Gdpr) we’ve instead had to wait almost two years for the film to hit Blighty. However, don’t get too excited. Given their budget and “free with commercials” format of its source, this isn’t The Irishman or The Tomorrow War. This shark in the house film was made by The Asylum and their frequent director Jared Cohn from a script by Anthony C. Ferrante… so don’t expect Jaws either!
The Samson family Lacey, her father Noah, and kids Charlotte (Brett Hargrave; Weedjies: Halloweed Night) and Tucker (Daniel Grogan) are renting a beach house.

With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...

(Welcome to Cardboard Cinema, an ongoing series where we look at board games inspired by or connected to our favorite media. In this edition, we look at an RPG that offers the ultimate horror/science fiction roleplaying experience.)
As a child of the '80s, I entered a cultural landscape where space horror was firing on every cylinder. From the "Alien" franchise to VHS staples like "Screamers," the '80s were an excellent time for horror movies of all budgets. Even now, as director-driven science fiction has become the norm, there's still the occasional "The Cloverfield Paradox" or "Life" to spark our appetite for monster movies with plenty of crawlspaces but a significant lack of oxygen.
And now, with tabletop roleplaying games like "Alien: The Roleplaying Game" and "Mothership" earning great reviews, there has never been a better time to launch your forays into the darkness of space. Of course,...

Claw, the latest film from director Gerald Rascionato and co-writer Joel Hogan has a bit of an identity crisis. The trailer promises a straightforward creature feature but the film’s tagline, “Do you think he-saurus? screams comedy, it’s even stolen from a joke told in Jurassic Park. The truth is, it’s an uneven mix of both.
Julia (Chynna Walker; Seven Short Films About (Our) Marriage) and Kyle (Richard Rennie; The Truth of It) are on their way to LA where she has a showcase performance for her standup routine. However when a coyote, probably chasing a roadrunner, runs in front of them they end up stranded in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire and have to spend the night in a ghost town with it’s only inhabitant,...

Running for more than three hours, overflowing with film clips, and populated by truly insightful experts, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror is a cinematic graduate-level course––in the best sense. Written, produced, and directed with stylistic verve by Kier-La Janisse, the documentary is a staggeringly immersive experience, all somber music, eerie singing, and unsettling, often gruesome imagery. It is also a creation that inspires the viewer to dive even further into the world of “folk horror.” Tracking down and watching the films highlighted here would be difficult, if not impossible, but that search is part of the fun. Make no mistake: folk horror is fun.
As Woodlands begins, Janisse’s stellar experts explain, in voiceover, what it means to be considered “folk horror.” This array of words forms a strange and enticing tapestry, from “The juxtaposition of the prosaic and the uncanny” to “The Devil...

For me it usually starts with the title, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971) has a doozy; provocative and exploitative, it evokes images of rituals, bloodlust, and other sundry delights. And sometimes the stars align, the film more or less living up to the promise of the title, or at least to the promise of the promise.
Released by Cannon Releasing Corp. Stateside in April and by its own Tigon Pictures in the U.K. in July, The Blood on Satan’s Claw didn’t do well; Tigon had a hit with The Witchfinder General (1968) with Vincent Price, and were looking to replicate that success. Regardless of its fate, The Blood on Satan’s Claw is an effective example of folk-horror, killer kids, and some light Satanism, as a treat.

Between 1957 and 1960, Manfred Kirchheimer and his partner Walter Hess shot thousands of feet of 16mm film for a planned documentary about New York City. For years the footage sat in storage, until Kirchheimer began editing it in 1968. Since then he fashioned two features from the material—Claw in 1968 and Dream of a City in 2018. Free Time is the third film assembled from the material.
Shot mostly on the streets and sidewalks of Manhattan’s Washington Heights, Free Time unfolds in areas apart from business and work. Children play games, chase each other through empty lots, hang around hydrants and alleys. Their parents gather on stoops or in shaded doorways to talk and smoke. Some drag out lawn chairs to soak up the sun. Shoppers return home, apartment residents clean windows or carry out old furniture, a janitor bundles up cardboard to recycle. It’s a portrait of a city that...

Lagging a few weeks behind the rest of the world (where Russell Crowe road-rage thriller “Unhinged” released in several territories late last month), the United States is slowly seeing cinemas reopen in anticipation of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” — still optimistically dated for Sept. 3.
But that doesn’t mean film fans don’t have options, opening on drive-in screens, virtual cinemas and subscriptions services.
With more than 30 new movies releasing in the U.S. this week, Variety helps steer you to the most interesting of these choices. Take your pick of everything from hard-hitting dramas — including stirring Black history lessons “The 24th” and “Emperor” — to action movies such as “Cut Throat City” and “Train to Busan” sequel “Peninsula.” Family audiences will find “The One and Only Ivan” on Disney Plus, while those with more twisted sensibilities can choose to watch a “The Most Dangerous Game”-inspired humans-hunting-humans movie: Cambodian thriller “The Prey.

In her latest film, Academy Award-winning documentarian Barbara Kopple turns her eye on the failed attempt to end the Iran Hostage Crisis that played out during 1979 and 1980. Named after the operational staging area in Iran, Desert One tracks one of Delta Force’s earliest missions, as President Jimmy Carter ordered a rescue of the 52 American hostages within the U.S. embassy, whose initial takeover was recreated in Ben Affleck’s Argo.
As the first trailer shows, ahead of a release later this month, Kopple intermixes talking heads, archival footage, and animation to recreate the mission, contextualizing its role both in Carter’s presidency and the 1980 presidential election, as well as the larger Iranian Revolution. One of the most daring rescue attempts in US history, Operation Eagle Claw, as it was known, was an incredibly risky mission, as Carter himself claimed, “If we are not successful, it will be my defeat.

Screaming, flying ‘Autonomous Mobile Swords’ have decimated the enemy in a war on a far-off planet, but now the pesky smart weapons are self-evolving into ever more cruel and deadly new iterations. The saying goes that books and their covers aren’t always the same or words to that effect; this particular logic had long been applied to the hallowed halls of the video stores, as eye-popping box art used to lure an unsuspecting victim could lead to atrocities or worse, boredom. And then there’s Screamers (1981), which promises something cool and twisted on the cover yet delivers a completely different film – an Italian period adventure tale with killer fish guys filleting to and fro. Different? You bet. Kind of delightful? Definitely.
