At the very start of the noughties, the horror genre was churning out some decent, if unspectacular movies. We saw the re-emergence of the spoof with the first entry in the Scary Movie franchise, Pinhead and co. continued to wreak spiky havoc in Hellraiser: Inferno, while the werewolf genre would get revived with the fun and well received Ginger Snaps. We also got a pretty poor Blair Witch sequel, and let’s face it, the first movie in that series only got traction due to an ingenious marketing campaign, and the media spouting bollocks about people being sick in the cinema from shock. Not the incredibly shaky camera work. Requiem for a Dream provided some messed up thrills, as did the similarly perverted Hollow Man. However, for every decent horror movie that was released, we also got howlers like Da Hip Hop Witch with Eminem. My point is, what the...

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

It’s time for a new episode of our Best Horror Party Movies video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that was widely considered to be a disappointment when it was first released back in 1996 – Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (watch it Here). But while Bordello of Blood may be a step down from its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and it may pale in comparison to the similar From Dusk Till Dawn, which was released around the same time, it’s still a movie you can party to. And to find out how we party to Bordello of Blood, check out the video embedded above!

It's generally accepted that a vampire can only die under several specific circumstances: direct sunlight, a wooden stake through the heart, a bath in holy water, etc. The means of bloodsucker dispatch do sometimes require the procedure to be more elaborate, such as in "Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood," where the vampire queen Lilith (Angie Everhart) needed her heart removed from her body and then sliced into four equal pieces. But the movies have taught us a few near-universal rules for making the undead dead. No fifth-grader with a passing knowledge of film history will be unprepared for vampire battle.

The Tales from the Crypt TV series was coming to an end in 1996 with the last season airing from April–July. After seven successful years, the Crypt Keeper was saying goodbye to TV and hello to Hollywood. Things got off to a good start in 1995 with Demon Knight, the first of a proposed Tales from the Crypt trilogy.
This was soon followed by Bordello of Blood. The film centres on a private investigator who, after looking into a missing person’s case, discovers that the local funeral parlour is also a brothel populated with vampire prostitutes. The Pi teams up with the missing person’s sister and a charismatic reverend to take on the vampires and their beautiful and deadly leader, Lilith.
The film was released in theatres 25 years ago on 16th August, 1996. However, the film had a difficult and turbulent production that meant it didn’t quite have the same bite as its predecessor.

The auteur’s dazzling 1981 masterpiece sees a never-better John Travolta find himself caught in a dangerous murder plot
Brian De Palma’s best movie, Blow Out, opens with scene from a movie-within-a-movie, a Z-grade slasher rip-off called Co-ed Frenzy, from the director of such esteemed films as Blood Bath and Blood Bath 2, Bad Day at Blood Beach and Bordello of Blood. The camerawork mimics the killer Pov shots of Black Christmas and Halloween, peeping through the windows of a sex-crazed sorority house before ducking inside, where the action alternates between T&a and stabbings. It finally ends with the umpteenth crude variation on the shower scene in Psycho, and the punchline that takes us out of the movie: the actor has a terrible scream.

Director-producer Richard Donner, best known for helming the “Lethal Weapon” film series, “The Goonies” and the original “Superman” film, died on Monday. He was 91.
Donner’s production company confirmed news of his death to Variety, though the cause was not disclosed.
Though not his first bigscreen effort, his big feature break came with 1976’s “The Omen,” starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Thereafter, he brought his craftsmanship to the first “Superman.” He also branched out into producing, usually with his wife Lauren Shuler Donner — he executive produced the huge 2000 success “X-Men” and later the prequel “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” But his career was highlighted by the “Lethal Weapon” series, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, which elevated him to the ranks of directors generating more than a billion dollars in box office.
Born Richard Donald Schwartzberg in the Bronx, he attended Parker Junior College and then NYU, where he majored in business and theater.

The greatest month of the year is almost upon us, where normal people embrace the scary movies they might otherwise avoid, and those who live the life year round can let their freak flag fly. AMC’s FearFest block of programming is an annual highlight, and this year is offering up 92 films for your spine-chilling pleasure. Here are a few highlights of the dozens of titles awaiting your viewing.
From Dusk Till Dawn sees a pair of criminal brothers on the run escape to Mexico after forcing a vacationing family to smuggle them over the border, only for them all to become trapped in a bar where vampires feast on the living, with their only hope for survival being to make it to sunrise.

For a decade, fans have waited for the Tales From The Crypt movies, Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood to make their Blu-ray debut. Along the way, some very expensive import versions were released, but as tempting as that was, I knew Scream Factory would be the one who would release the definitive editions of these films, and that is exactly what happened.
Demon Knight
Easily the highest quality film in this double feature from the crypt, Demon Knight is one of the definitive horror movies of the Nineties. It has a killer soundtrack, a hip, talented cast, and some tremendous special makeup and monster effects.
I’m happy to report that Demon Knight holds up extremely well. It had been a very long time since my last viewing, so I was a little bit concerned. But, honestly, I may have even enjoyed the movie more this time around. I remember it being a wild,...

October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.
Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Next Tuesday, Scream Factory will offer horror fans several new options for Halloween movie marathons when The Larry Fessenden Collection and the Tales From the Crypt films Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood come out on respective Blu-rays. Ahead of their impending release date, we have clips and trailers from all three Blu-rays to give you a look at what's to come.
Demon Knight (Collector's Edition Blu-ray): "A mysterious drifter known as Brayker (William Sadler, Iron Man 3) possesses the last of seven ancient keys that hold the power to stop the forces of darkness and protect all humanity from ultimate evil. But the human race is safe only so long as Brayker can evade the demonic Collector (Billy Zane, Titanic) who has gathered the other six keys.
In his obsessive quest for the key, the Collector rallies an army of ghastly cadavers against Brayker and the inhabitants of a run-down hotel.

Shout! Factory's horror imprint Scream Factory just surprised American horror fans with the announcement that they'd be handling a Fall collector's edition release of Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness. This comes immediately after their announcements of Blu-ray releases of the two Tales From the Crypt spin off films, Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood. Those two are certainly great news, but Army of Darkness is certainly the winner today.Army of Darkness is one of those films that has been released and re-released over and over again by Starz / Anchor Bay and has proved to be a cash cow for that company. Two of the Cryptkeeper's big screen stories will receive a stellar home media treatment this fall. Scream Factory has announced that on October 20th, they will release the Tales From the Crypt films Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood in respective Collector's Edition Blu-rays.
From Scream Factory: "You asked for them...and we got em! Both Tales From The Crypt films Demon Knight (1995) and Bordello Of Blood (1996) will be coming out on 10/20 as separate "Collector Edition" Blu-rays. We have no additional information at this time except that newly-commissioned artwork will be revealed next month and that extras will be announced in Late Summer.

All hail a cult classic. When "Demon Knight" premiered in theaters in January 1995, the kickoff to Universal's would-be "Tales from the Crypt" big-screen franchise suffered from generally negative reviews and mild box-office - only to develop a healthy cult following among lovers of old-school creature features in the intervening years. I remember seeing it on a Friday night in a packed house and loving every minute of it, from Billy Zane's over-the-top bad guy to those A-grade practical monster effects. Though the Ernest R. Dickerson-directed film was followed by two inferior movies - 1996's heinous Dennis Miller vehicle "Bordello of Blood" and 2002's "Ritual" - "Demon Knight" holds up one of the best horror-comedies of the 1990s. As it hits the two-decade mark, I'm counting down 10 reasons why it deserves our admiration.

Have you ever heard a parent say, “I’m not especially fond of children, but I love my own!”? That’s kind of how I feel about zombies. So when I got the offer from Blanc/Biehn Productions to make my feature directorial debut, guess what…
Yep: zombies!
If you’ve followed my career as a horror critic, you know that while I try to be as fair and balanced as possible, I’m always at a slight disadvantage when reviewing zombie flicks because they’re my least favorite.
So why, when actress-producer-uberwoman Jennifer Blanc-Beihn and highly imaginative executive producer Lony Ruhmann approached me earlier this year about writing and directing a saucy suspenser based on one of Lony’s loglines – “pinup girls vs. zombies” – did I say yes?
Anyone who knows me well enough to know I don’t love zombies should also know that my passion for style,...

Vampires have a long literary history, where we have read tales of the undead as glamorous monsters with charm, beauty, and talents of seduction. It was long understood that the Count Dracula’s of the world used their sexuality to lure in prey, and as these stories are continually translated on to the big screen we are starting to see the sexual side of vampires in a far more visual manner.
Vampire films may be considered a new trend, but films featuring the children of the night have been popular since Nosferatu frightened audiences, or Bela Lugosi breathed life into the iconic character of Dracula. Lately we have seen the vampire myth take a decidedly different turn from the usual monster fare with films like Twilight, that explore a more casual and “tweeny’ take on the mythical monsters. That won’t be who we are discussing today, and...

You better watch Titanic, Top Gun and Braveheart while you can, because come 2014, Netflix will remove 80 films and a handful of TV shows from their streaming site.
According to Reddit, on New Year's Day, nearly 40 million streaming Netflix subscribers will no longer be able to watch some of the classic films and TV shows that have been so readily available in the past. Instead, they will have to join the seven million DVD subscribers and order their films to come in the mail.

The heads-up came from an anonymous post on Reddit, in which the user listed every film that is to be removed from instant streaming as of Wednesday, January 1. A Netflix spokesperson told CNN that the company often changes what films will be available for streaming based on licensing contracts made with the studios and filmmakers.

Life is ephemeral. Nothing lasts forever, least of all your favorite streaming movies and TV shows on Netflix. It used to be you could go to third-party websites to find out when movies would be expiring from Netflix’s streaming service, but no more. Now the only place to find that information is on individual listings within Netflix’s own website or apps. How are we to know which films we never got around to watching that we’ll be missing in a few days?
Well, where there’s a will there’s a way. In this case, that way is through the seedy back alley of the Internet known as Reddit, where one user was kind enough to list all the various films and TV shows that will no longer be on Netflix after the first of the year. Here is that very list:

A major downside of VOD services compared with having a vast Blu-ray or DVD library is timing. Services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. have contracts with content providers - contracts that expire usually around the end of a calendar year unless otherwise renewed.
Thus from January 1st, certain films will no longer be available on that service to watch when you want. Today, a Reddit post has listed the films that are about to drop off Netflix due to contract with various rights providers running out. When (or even if) they will return is anyone's guess. The list is as follows:

Braveheart
Body Of Evidence
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

December was a slow month for horror additions to the Netflix streaming library, but we wanted to let readers know about a handful of new titles that were recently released, including The Devil Inside, Night of the Living Dead: Reanimation and The Grudge 3. Don’t forget that all completed seasons of Supernatural are still available on Netflix, along with Seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead.
There are also four seasons of The Twilight Zone available, which we always recommend to horror fans that don’t own the entire series already. Below is a list of many of the newly released titles, along with titles we previously covered. Keep in mind that this list is from the Us Netflix streaming library and may differ depending on the deals Netflix has in place in other countries.

There has been a lot of talk about how great the summer of 1982 was for movies. And, boy, it really was. (Among the 1982 summer releases were "E.T.," "Blade Runner," "Tron," "The Road Warrior," "Rocky III" and "Poltergeist.") The summer of 1982 was so good, in fact, that for a movie writer covering these current August movies -- doldrums of August, even -- it's kind of depressing. (But, "ParaNorman" is great. I promise.)
The month of August has built itself quite an infamous reputation as one of the worst movie months of the year: The summer blockbusters have wrapped up and awards season has yet to start -- which leaves audiences with movies like "Total Recall." But 2012 is far from the worst movie August ever. So, in the spirit of 1982 being the best summer for movies, I present you with a case for the worst August in the history of movies: 1996.

After scripting the first two Back to the Future films, writer Bob Gale hasn't really done much else with which viewers can be pleased. Such work includes writing the story for the "Tales from the Crypt" film Bordello of Blood and we all know how that turned out. However, Gale could be poised for a big screen comeback as Variety reports the writer will adapt Trespassers, a supernatural graphic novel that follows a group of mythbusters, set on debunking the legend of a famous allegedly haunted house. But their job changes when they encounter real demonic guardians and one of the busters may not be who they claim. Ryan E. Heppe, the producer behind the forthcoming remake of Short Circuit, is behind the film, but it doesn't sound like there's a studio attached yet. Heppe says, "A good horror flick needs one thing: a simple, original premise that's terrifying as hell.

Hardcore "Fright Night" fans have had mixed reactions since the new trailer for the vampire remake debuted earlier this year. The horror comedy's original cast has some big shoes to fill – especially where the roles of fanged fiend Jerry Dandridge and vampire killer extraordinaire Peter Vincent are concerned. DreamWorks' new international trailer has arrived and gives us a better look at some of our principal players – namely Charlie's (Anton Yelchin) idol and partner in staking, the new Peter Vincent ("Dr. Who's" David Tennant) who is now a Las Vegas magician instead of a horror TV host.
The trailer also delivers more on the horror front – opening like a snarky comedy before it digs into the dark stuff. Colin Farrell seems to fit the bill as the sexy and scary vamp that retaliates against Charlie for being a nosy neighbor. When the high schooler and his horror-obsessed pal Evil Ed...

Back in 1989, a series called Tales from the Crypt debuted on HBO and would continue to run until 1996. The series was based on the 1950s EC Comics title of the same name, which also spawned a 1972 anthology movie, three feature films in Demon Knight, Bordello of Blood, and a third much less–know title, Ritual, as well as the still–strange–to–think–about Saturday morning cartoon, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, and a kid's game show called Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House. The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir) himself was a pop culture horror icon, known for his unsettling appearance and oddly appealing cheesy sense of humor. Even I as a child had a Cryptkeeper mask for Halloween!
Now comes word of a proposed revival of the series now being planned. Gil Adler, a producer on the original HBO series, along with Andrew Cosby, a co–creator of Syfy's...

It's been a long time since Robert Zemeckis has made a great film that I really enjoyed. The last film he produced that I thought was awesome was the CG animated film Monster House. He's now producing a film that actually sound pretty freakin' awesome.
Sony Pictures Animation has acquired the rights to a book written by Chuck Sambuchino called How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack: Defend Yourself When the Lawn Warriors Strike (And They Will), it's so true, and the book could really come in handy. I have a problem with getting attacked by Garden Gnomes, it's just something I've had to deal with my whole life.

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
If you're ever looking for a good reason to excuse yourself from a group field trip to the local whore house, just turn to your friends and utter the words: "Bordello of Blood." If they don't understand what that means, then it's time to dust off the old DVD.
"Bordello of Blood" is a "Tales From the Crypt" story that focuses on a funeral parlor that serves as a front for the sexiest bordello in town.

We got some pretty rad news for you guys this afternoon as Bloody Disgusting got the exclusive news that Sony's Columbia Pictures has acquired the original spec horror action script Supermax from actor/writers Christopher Allen Nelson (Kill Bill Vol. 2, The Dead Girl, The Tripper, Criminal Minds) and Mitch Rouse (Strangers With Candy, Employee of the Month, Reno 911). "Supermax" takes place in a Maximum Security Prison for the Super-Natural as a skilled guard must join forces with a lethal inmate after a riot ensues in order to fight his way through various monsters and mad-men in order to survive. The script was acquired for a reported six figures. For those of you who don't know Chris Nelson, his background began in special FX as he's worked on over 35 movies including Return of the Living Dead II, Bordello of Blood, Nightwatch, Species II, Constantine, Sin City, among many others.

As Fangoria celebrates it’s 30th Anniversary this year, some longtime friends of the magazine are celebrating their own anniversary. On May 12th, Megaforce Records will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Fistful Of Metal, the 1984 debut from Anthrax. Rock and Horror are a match made in heaven hell, and few bands have quite the association with the genre (and Fangoria) as Anthrax.
As the special-edition release of their first album approaches, and with their first studio album in six years, Worship Music (their first with vocalist Dan Nelson) due out this Fall, Fango caught up with members of the band to talk music, and of course, talk horror.
In the first part of Fangoria Musick’s exclusive interviews, James Zahn talks with Anthrax guitarist and lyricist Scott Ian.
