Professor Durkheim is presumably named after the French sociologist Emile Durkheim, the first academic to study suicide extensively.
To boost ticket sales for this film in the theater, its US release was timed with the start of the new college school year in late August 1998.
In the film, Jason Segel and Linda Cardellini play Kyle and Kelly respectively, who are in a relationship. Segal and Cardellini would go on to play a couple again in Freaks and Geeks (1999), and would date in real life.
Jason Segel (Kyle) and Alyson Hannigan (Lucy) would later go on to play married couple Marshal Erikson and Lily Aldrin on How I Met Your Mother (2005).
The priest at the end of the movie is played by Patrick Thomas O'Brien. O'Brien had previously played Mr. Dewey, a math teacher at Bayside High School on Saved by the Bell (1989), the show in which Mark-Paul Gosselaar starred as Zach Morris.
