At around forty-nine minutes, Press' line "bangin' cocktail waitresses two at a time" was borrowed from The Godfather (1972) from the scene in which Moe Green explains to Michael Corleone his public mistreatment of brother Fredo.
Michael Madsen and Natasha Henstridge have disowned the film, claiming to hate it. In regards to H.R. Giger, he actually requested to have a reduction of credit in his involvement, not having been impressed with the film either.
This film was critically panned upon release and a box office bomb. It had an identical budget to the first film ($35 million for both) but grossed even less worldwide, with only $26.8 million revenue as opposed to the first film's $113 million. This led to the film's sequels, Species III (2004) and Species: The Awakening (2007), being sent straight-to-television, making this the last Species film to get a theatrical release.
Most of the nude scenes, such as the debutantes having sex with Patrick or the strip-club sequence, were shortened in the final version of the movie. The full scenes can be seen in the DVD extra features.
Raquel Gardner had to spend hours fully nude while filming her bedroom scene with Patrick. First having sex with the actor, and then intertwined with the full size alien Patrick dummy as she was surrounded by the male film and special effects crews. She said luckily nudity never bothered her. Also, the crews were very respectful.
