“Let’s make an R-rated cartoon about an R-rated cartoon coming out” was the original concept pitched when Matt Stone and Trey Parker were developing their classic animated musical opus, South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut. Twenty-five years later, it remains a brilliantly meta idea. But before Canada-blaming glory, South Park’s road to the silver screen was paved with many blockades, mainly from within their parent company of Viacom, which owned both Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, and their biggest formidable foe, the then-named Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
And as if it wasn’t ironic enough, the biggest bone of contention was for the creators’ use of vulgarities within an anti-censorship-centric movie. In typical Matt and Trey fashion, whatever adversary they faced, they rebelled with nastier pushback against. And in the long run, this made for a more memorable film. Here’s a look back at the...

What exactly is BASEketball anyway? If you’re a child of a certain era, you know exactly what it is. If not, well, let me explain. In the late nineties, the hottest comic duo was no doubt Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Together, they had charted a unique path to stardom. Two University Of Colorado grads, the two had their beginnings in the early nineties when they made a micro-budget indie called Cannibal: The Musical, which, despite failing to get into the Sundance Film Festival, became kind of a calling card for them. It got them a unique job directing a corporate film about Universal Pictures for Seagrams, who were acquiring the company, thanks to the patronage of David Zucker, one of the directors behind The Naked Gun, Top Secret and Airplane, who was a fan of their movie. They parlayed their success into a low-budget comedy called Orgazmo, which...

We all know Trey Parker and Matt Stone from South Park, but what about all that came before it? Sure, some of us may have checked out Orgazmo to get an idea of what the boys were up to and maybe you even tracked down Cannibal! The Musical. But only the true die hard Parker and Stone fans have seen Your Studio and You. Styled after industrial movies of the 1950s – which would guide viewers through the process of any given corporation – Your Studio and You gives us a glimpse inside of Universal Studios…with exactly the sort of humor that fans would expect from Parker and Stone.
Released in 1995, Your Studio and You was a commissioned piece from David Zucker, who would go on to direct Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s BASEketball. Meant for internal studio use only, the 14-minute short begins by poking fun at “classic talking...

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are best known for creating the animated series South Park, which they have dedicated a few decades of their lives to – but as South Park marches on into its 27th season, Parker and Stone are also taking some time to work with rapper Kendrick Lamar and filmmaker / record executive Dave Free on a live-action comedy they have set up at Paramount Pictures. Parker and Stone are producing the currently-untitled film through their company Park County while Lamar and Free do the same for pgLang, and during the Paramount panel at CinemaCon today it was announced that the film is set for a July 4, 2025 theatrical release!
While speaking at CinemaCon, Paramount CEO Brian Robbins had this to say about the project: “I’m excited to announce that we’re going into production this summer on a live-action comedy from the creators of South Park and The Book of Mormon,...

The humble beginnings of Matt Stone and Trey Parker's "South Park" are nothing short of inspiring, with two friends crafting a stop-motion short film that would evolve into one of the most popular and longest-running shows in television history. "The Spirit of Christmas" was first released in 1992 (colloquially referred to as "Jesus vs. Frosty") and again in 1994 as a Christmas card (colloquially known as "Jesus vs. Santa" to differentiate) Fox executive Brian Graden had commissioned to send to his friends. Parker and Stone then developed the characters and the mountain town setting into what would become "South Park," and the rest is history.
This timeline certainly makes "South Park" sound like one of those dreamy Hollywood Cinderella stories in which two unknown comedy animators were plucked from obscurity to become billionaires and one award shy of earning Egot status. However, this narrative ignores the countless other projects -- both...

This year’s edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is set to take place from September 7th through the 17th, and yesterday they invited film fans to guess which ten movies they’ll be screening in their Midnight Madness lineup this year. The hints were the titles of ten movies that could be compared to the films in the lineup in some way. They were Trey Parker’s Orgazmo, Geoff Murphy’s Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Jimmy Wang Yu’s Fantasy Mission Force, Charles Martin Smith’s Trick or Treat, Stan Brakhage’s Dog Star Man, Martin Scorsese’s After Hours, Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead, Paul Schrader’s Blue Collar, Ingmar Bergman’s Hour of the Wolf, and Theodore J. Flicker’s Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang. Now TIFF has announced the full lineup for both their Midnight Madness and Discovery programmes, and...

Last week we asked what went wrong with Shazam! Fury of the Gods this week we get to ask what went right with John Wick: Chapter 4 as the film blew past studio estimates to a franchise best $73.5 million opening. That opening puts it just $13 million shy of passing the entire worldwide gross of the first film. I think in the pantheon of Keanu Reeves’ films, The Matrix may have changed movie making forever but the sequels could never quite live up to that first film, with John Wick you have a franchise that not just maintained its quality, but actually improved on it with each film. That’s even more impressive when you consider the films director, Chad Shahelski, has only ever directed the John Wick films after earning a name for himself as a stunt performer and coordinator on films such as The Crow (where he stood in for...

The year of 1969 saw the moon landing of the Apollo 11’s Eagle module, Richard Nixon sworn in as the 37th president of the United States, the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village ushering in the gay rights movement, the Tate-La Bianca murders by the Manson Family, the landmark Woodstock Music and Arts Fair which attracts 400,000, the tragic and violent Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont Speedway and even Tiny Tim marrying Miss Vicki on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

You never know who you’ll end up in school with – the most formative and excruciating period of your life – odds are your classmates will be contentious and forgettable, but sometimes you get lucky and in some cases, you begin a lifelong friendship and creative partnership like best friends Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They met while attending the Cambridge Ringe and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in 1997 they both won Oscars for collaboratively writing the screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
Likewise, Trey Parker and Matt Stone met at the University of Colorado in Boulder; a prolific partnership developed that includes feature films (Orgazmo, Team America), musicals (The Book Of Mormon) and the long running South Park – now including a spin-off video game. And rounding out the examples, the lovely and talented Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts boast a friendship going back to North Sydney Girls’ High School.

Dominated by the box office behemoth that was James Cameron's Titanic, 1997 was a year of high drama and outlandish special effects. The Lost World: Jurassic Park brought with it a new batch of genetically revived dinosaurs, George Lucas dug his original Star Wars trilogy out of the cupboard and added new (controversial) computer-generated sequences, while Nicolas Cage and John Travolta did impressions of one another and fired guns in John Woo's delirious action movie, Face/Off.
It was a varied year for movies, for sure, particularly by 21st century standards; it's difficult to imagine a British feel-good comedy about amateur male strippers (The Full Monty) getting into the year's 10 highest grossing films these days. But among all those winners, there had to be some...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Porn may be many things, but it's rarely very funny, a fact that's lost on Orgazmo, a 1997 comedy from South Park creator Trey Parker (who stars, writes and directs) that boasts no real joke other than the idea that a pent-up religious conservative making adult films is the height of contrasting-worlds hilarity. Parker's story concerns Joe Young (Parker), a sunny, simpleminded Mormon in California whose desire to return home to Utah and marry his sweetheart Lisa (Robyn Lynne) is stymied by his lack of money. While going door-to-door preaching the gospel to people who show disdain for his faith, Joe happens upon a porn shoot, and when he beats to a pulp the security detail attempting to evict him from the set, is selected by director Maxxx Orbison (Michael Dean Jacobs) to assume the lead role in "Orgazmo," a work of smut about a do-gooder who first saves,...

"The Book of Mormon," the audacious and outrageously funny musical about two mismatched young Mormon missionaries who get assigned to (gasp!) Uganda with hysterical results, has already swept Broadway with nine Tony Awards. This week, it opens in Los Angeles with a brand new West Coast cast. The geniuses behind the smash hit are "South Park's" Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who wrote the catchy songs with "Avenue Q"s Robert Lopez. After a preview show Saturday night at the Pantages Theatre, Stone and Parker sat down to talk about their plans to make a movie version, joked about who might star in it, and why they think Mormons have actually embraced the show. Here are 11 things we learned from the press conference. "The Book of Mormon" is headed for the big screen... eventually. Matt Stone: I think we want to do a movie someday. Trey Parker:...

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have confirmed plans to turn their award-winning Broadway musical into a film
Broadway hit The Book of Mormon is to be made into a film, its writers have confirmed. "Hopefully it will have a big run and a big tour and then we can do the movie in several years," Trey Parker, who wrote the musical with fellow South Park creator Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-writer Robert Lopez, told EW.com

Parker and Stone, who are currently writing the remaining episodes of the current season of South Park, have previously made four films: 1993's Cannibal! The Musical, 1997's Orgazmo, 1999's South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut, and 2004's Team America: World Police. The latter...

Often times, movies about religion are nothing to laugh at. From Oscar-winner "Doubt" to "The Passion of the Christ," to even "The Ten Commandments," those stories, with the spectre of God's judgement looming in the plot, required a sober seriousness that leaves no room for jokes.
But there are other, lighter times when organized religion, if not the supreme power itself, are lampooned. Count Mel Brooks' "The History of the World: Part II," Kevin Smith's "Dogma," Trey Parker's "Orgazmo" and even his and "South Park" co-creator Matt Stone's "Book of Mormon," if you want to lump stage plays in there.
The new indie film "The Catechism Cataclysm," definitely belongs in the latter grouping.

If you’ve been listening to “The Book of Mormon” soundtrack from afar, and longing for a surge to your back account so that you could see it live, fear not. There are other ways to enjoy Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s unique take on the Mormon religion, and the cheapest, easiest, and far-reaching method would be a feature film. Luckily, that’s in the works. According to EW, Parker and Stone plan to adapt their runaway success into a big screen musical. It won’t be for a few years yet, as they plan to debut the national tour in Denver, Colorado before tackling a screenplay. But it’s cooking. This isn't the first time we'll see the South Park creators make the big screen jump, they've previously done so with Team America: World Police (one of my favorites), BASEketball, Orgazmo and of course South Park's Bigger, Longer and Uncut.
I haven't seen the musical but have heard some of the songs from it, which were written by Parker, Stone and Robert Lopez.

It seemed like Matt Stone and Trey Parker were starting to lose their way with recent seasons of South Park, where the typically hilarious comedy and biting satire were jettisoned in favor of easy laughs cheap targets. But that may not matter, as they’ve managed to have a huge rebound with their Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon. Garnering Tony wins and massive attention for its songwriting and production, the duo have been doing better for themselves over the past few months than they have the previous few years combined. I’ve been dying to see this show since it first premiered — although ticket demands aren’t making that desire easy to fulfill — and it’s hard to imagine that many others don’t feel the same way.
So it’s no wonder that they hope to take the story from one form of theater to another, and they’ve told EW (via Hollywood.

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star
Directed by: Tom Brady
Cast: Nick Swardson, Christina Ricci, Don Johnson, Kevin Nealon
Running Time: 1 hr 36 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: September 9, 2011
Plot: A clueless buck-toothed young man from Iowa (Swardson) ventures to California in hopes of being a porn star, just like his parents.
Who’S It For?: The humor of Bucky Larson might be best enjoyed by those who have little understanding of such sexual concepts like masturbation or even intercourse. This movie is made for giggly 13-year-olds who ironically shouldn’t be allowed to see this movie (especially for its hard R-rating). It’s a movie that will lose a great chunk of ticket sales because its main demographic has to sneak in by supporting Contagion.
Expectations: There isn’t much to expect from a movie when it isn’t screened for critics, other than an anticipation of foul humor and bad jokes.

Nick Swardson ought to have been a Milford Man*. He's one of those comedians who I find hysterical in small doses, but utterly cringe-inducing when he is given a lead role. Actually, that isn't accurate. His stand-up ought to count as "a lead role" and I do like the Comedy Central specials that I've seen, so I guess I like Nick Swardson best when he's playing a variation of himself. Basically, when he isn't given total freedom. (For argument's sake, stand-up comedians don't have "total freedom" in the sense that a live audience can have an effect on the ultimate outcome of that particular set. Lawyered?) As such, Swardson is one of my favorite things about both "Reno 911!" and Grandma's Boy, but I stayed far, far (faaaaaaaaar) away from his sketch series, "Nick Swardson's Pretend Time." I'll probably be staying even farther away from his new starring role in...

The name of the movie is “The Green Hornet,” but everyone knows that the title character isn’t the coolest costumed cat to appear in Michel Gondry’s new flick.
That honor goes to Kato (Jay Chou), ostensibly the Green Hornet’s driver and sidekick, but also a kung-fu badass capable of delivering the smackdown to evil wherever he finds it.
He’s just the latest entrant in a lineup of superhero second bananas who shine as brightly as the guys they back up, so join us as we salute the guys behind the guys.
9. Chronic, ‘Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back’ (2001)
Hey, did you guys know that Kevin Smith has a fondness for marijuana? It’s true and, for proof, look no further than the super-team he created as comic book subjects in “Chasing Amy,” Bluntman and Chronic. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to View Askewniverse characters Jay and Silent Bob,...

For some reason, all the movie blogs are running a new story today with a headline along the lines of "Warner Brothers Developing Buffy the Vampire Slayer Remake; Joss Whedon Not involved."
Funny thing is, if you do a Google search for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and limit your search to late May 2009, you'll get the exact same headlines. Compare 2009 to 2010.
The only new wrinkle here is that Whit Anderson is now attached as scriptwriter. And she "loves" the series. So, yeah. Old news is new news. So, fuck it. I'm re-running our original post because nothing else has changed. (Source: La Times. Thanks for rehashing on a slow news day!)

Hang on to your Charlie horses, folks. You're going to need to do a lot of rubbing -- this one is going to burn. Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original Kristy Swanson Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie is putting together a Buffy reboot.

The industry brings in $13 billion a year in the United States alone. No, we aren’t talking about the traditional film industry. We’re talking about porn. This Friday, Paramount is releasing George Gallo‘s Middle Men, which chronicles the rise of Internet pornography. To celebrate The Film Stage presents our 10 favorite films related to the industry.
Honorable Mentions: The Fluffer, Live Nude Girls
10. Wonderland (dir. James Cox) (2003)
John Holmes is a porno legend. Mark Wahlberg’s character in Boogie Nights is based on Holmes and the well endowed performer is at the center of the Wonderland murders in this film. Holmes, played adequately by Val Kilmer, eventually died of AIDS related complications and the surface of his persona is barely scratched here in favor of investigating the seedy world of crime that goes hand-in-hand with the world of pornography. - John L.

Trust me when I say it's a shpadoinkle day, friends. Within my crusty black soul resides the heart of a musical theater fan, and I know there's a shitton of you theater queens out there with me. So rejoice, for Trey Parker and Matt Stone are going to bringing their talents to Broadway with a new musical called "The Book of Mormon."
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut is the best original film musical since Hedwig crooned about the towering velvetine. Catchy, infectious songs with a twisted, hilarious plot -- it's everything you could hope for from a musical. And while I feared theater was going to die with its blue-haired crowd and non-procreating mostly gay fanbase, it's been taking a maniacal bent toward the grotesque that I simply adore -- Bat Boy, Avenue Q, American Psycho. Alright, Urinetown might have been a bit much.

The long-rumored Broadway writing debut of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone finally has a date: The Book of Mormon, described as a traditional musical comedy with untraditional subject matter, will open in March 2011. Parker and Stone, who earned an Oscar nomination for the musical genius they displayed in the big-screen South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut, are penning the book, music, and lyrics with Robert Lopez, a Tony winner for Avenue Q. (Lopez has said the South Park movie was one of his major influences writing the gloriously perverse puppet show.) Parker will direct with Jason Moore,...

In a previous life I think I was a fluff girl so I’m kind of sensitive about behind the scenes porno shows. While most of you were laughing it up watching Trey Parker shave his balls in Orgazmo I was strapped into a 94-minute emotional roller coaster ride of painful memories. So what can be expected from Blue Movies, a new web series from creator/director Scott Brown? Well if you don’t have painful and repressed memories of pleasuring the leading man off camera while trying to support three children all under the age of four I think you’ll be getting some pretty fantastically good awesomeness out of this one. Episode 1 (above), “The First Time,” opens with a “pivotal scene” from a special Batman adaptation, “The Dark Night: Full of Hot Freakin’ Orgies,” where an actually well costumed and acted Joker Zack Gold reenacts the famous disappearing pencil scene.

You better watch out You better not cry You better have clout I'm telling you why Two Thumbs Down are comin' to town He's making a list,
Checking it twice;
Gonna find out whose
movie was scheiss.
Sandy Claws is comin' to town.
He sees you when you're (bleeping),
He knows when you're a fake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for cinema's sake!
With little but scorn
and pounding of drums,
Rooty toot hoots
and rummy tum thumbs
Sandy Jaws is comin' to town
As I dream back over many happy years of movie going, some of my favorite lines from old reviews dance in my head like visions of sugarplums. Good movies, bad movies, doesn't matter, just so the line dances. I thought I'd share them in the holiday spirit. Curiously, most of the lines come from movies so bad I didn't want a refund,...
