It's immediately evident that THE JOYRIDERS is the work of NYC porn director Shaun Costello. Styled as a road movie, this tale of two conniving young women floats away in the air almost immediately after having been consumed, but is okay XXX diversion.
Though members of his stock company appear in supporting roles, the problem here is with the two leads. Day Jason is okay as the dominant femme of the two, but she never made it in the biz. Her one-shot companion Nicole Lowe contributes next to nothing; in an improvisatory format as Costello created for these 1-day wonders it doesn't pay to be timid and nearly mute -that's not holding up your end of the bargain, and so Lowe spoils most scenes.
But after all it's just meant to be an hour's worth of f&s, but the mildly comical situations don't reach the level of the usual Costello grinder. With his favorite ripoff, the score from the classic Delon/Belmondo movie BORSALINO setting a jaunty tone, we watch the femme hitchhikers bamboozle one schmo after another, though said schmoes always get some pussy for their trouble.
A traveling salesman has his way, then a guy comically named Buster Bailley takes the two sisters home to satisfy his lesbian wife; then a motorcycle racer and a femme cop. Gals get their comeuppance when they try to scam a fellow scammer - reliable comic Bobby Astyr, who's hip patter is the highlight of the picture, Open ending (thank God SC didn't concoct a sequel) has the gals broke on the road again.
Sex scenes are nothing to write home about, with the sisters' incest having zero impact (we don't really think of them as sisters), and out of nowhere Costello throws in anal sex and d.p. closeups for the fans later in the proceedings. Dumbest joke is Marc Stevens riding by for a second on a bicycle and Astyr thinks he recognizes "the star". For this bit Marc gets intentionally misleading third billing (after the sisters) in the opening credits.
When the trip leads to Manhattan there's a nice capsule look at movie marquees showing everything from BEYOND ALL LIMITS to THE SEDUCTION OF LYNN CARTER. More significantly is the neon for THE PRIVATE AFTERNOONS OF PAMELA MANN, in which our lead sister Day Jason had a small role.
