Despite releasing at the end of 2023, one of 2024's biggest sleeper hits at the box office was "Anyone But You," a romantic-comedy starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as former lovers who cross paths at a destination wedding and pretend to be a couple in order to placate their respective families. Given the film's financial success, it shows a potential bright future for the rom-com genre, which in recent years has struggled to have the success it once had throughout the 2000s with hits like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Knocked Up."
Thanks to "Anyone But You," there are a lot of audiences with a renewed interest in satiating their desire for a raunchy, laugh-out-loud rom-com, especially ones with the hard-to-resist enemies-to-lovers trope, a disastrous wedding, or perhaps a reinterpretation a well-known story in the modern era. Matthew Lawrence recently said on the “Magical Rewind” podcast that the only time he got into trouble on a film or television set was when Gabrielle Union allegedly reported him. According to Lawrence, the incident occurred after he declined Union’s offer to rehearse their lines together on the set of their 1999 TV movie “H-e Double Hockey Sticks.” Lawrence starred in the film as a hockey player who becomes the target of a young devil, played by podcast co-host Will Friedle.
“There was this one moment where — and, again, I’m oblivious, I had no idea — and [Gabrielle] wanted to rehearse. And I was like, ‘No, I’m good,'” Lawrence remembered (via Entertainment Weekly). “And she got angry and went and reported me to the director and the studio. The only time in my entire career, because usually I’m, like, the advocate, and I’m fighting for kids and,...

The theme song for "The Big Bang Theory" is a fast-talking deluge of pseudo-nerdy references that are juuust incorrect enough to drive real-life nerds a little big crazy. The full version of the theme, rarely played in its entirety before the show, included enough brainy references to be clever, however. It talks about bipeds evolving, the continent of Pangaea, and it contains the lyric "Australopithecus would really have been sick of us," which I deeply appreciate.
The theme song was written and performed by Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies, the authors of the famously wordy 1998 hit "One Week." Gen-Xers can likely recite large portions of "One Week", although only committed Barenaked Ladies fans have memorized the entire thing. The band also had charting hits with "It's All Been Done" (also from 1998) as well as "Pinch Me" and "Too Little Too Late." Those paying attention to indie rock in 1992 likely heard...

Anyone who was around cinema in the early 2000s saw Julia Stiles take the romantic comedy genre by storm. 10 Things I Hate About You and Save The Last Dance were staples of any millenial film collection. She always had a certain something that made her stand out from other leads at the time. So it’s exciting to see her now take the directing route, as she embarks on this new path. A first film is tough, as it can really shape how an audience sees the types of films you’re wanting to make. And while I wasn’t a massive fan of the film (check out my review Here) there’s still plenty of potential for Stiles behind the camera.
I was able to speak with Stiles about her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, and why she chose to adapt a novel for her first feature.

Julia Stiles’ recital of that emotional poem in 10 Things I Hate About You may have cued the waterworks, but she admits it was never supposed to be that emotional in the first place.
In an interview with Bustle released Wednesday, the actress and director of Wish You Were Here reflected on her breakout role as Kat Stratford in the teen rom-com in which she and Heath Ledger’s Patrick Verona fall in love. In one scene in particular, Stiles’ Kat recites an emotional poem to Ledger’s Patrick in which she expresses her heartbreak and feelings for him as she offers 10 things she “hates” about him.
“In the table read with the whole cast, I kind of just read it without any emotion and I do remember the director saying, ‘She’ll be more emotional next time,’ so maybe that sunk in,” Stiles recalled of the poem scene.

The 1990s were an amazing time for comedy movies. Major stars like Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler seemed to be churning out one hit after another, dominating the box office with their seemingly endless stream of big laughs. Rom-coms also flourished during this era, with numerous major hits like Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You consistently pleasing audiences with their enjoyable balance of humor and heart. No matter what your tastes were, there was bound to be something to make you laugh when you entered a movie theater in the '90s, even if it was cringe comedy.
However, not every great comedy from the '90s managed to achieve the same level of popularity or critical acclaim. Many hilarious films actually flew under the radar for the most part, falling in the shadows of other, more popular movies. Although these films may not have made as much of a splash,...

“He was amazing. He was such a bright light,” Julia reminisced, saying that she and the rest of the cast were “close on that set.”
Julia said that Heath had a special presence: “He just walked into the room and lit it up.”

Julia Stiles looked back on her 2023 Saturday Night Live cameo on Monday, saying the sketch came together so quickly she struggled to find childcare in order to make it work.
“They contacted me the Friday before the Saturday show,” Stiles said during an interview on Watch What Happens Live. “I scrambled to find someone to take care of my kids until the middle of the night.”
At the time, the 10 Things I Hate About You star had recently welcomed her third child.
Stiles appeared during a segment of SNL‘s “Weekend Update” alongside cast member Chloe Fineman. Together, they recreated and extended the Juilliard audition scene at the end of 2001’s Save the Last Dance. Coincidentally, Stiles’ last experience with the sketch show had been in March 2001, when she hosted two months after Save the Last Dance‘s release.

There is nothing quite like the thrill of a successful first date, which romance movies capture perfectly. When the banter flows just right and the conversation is sparkling, the actors in romance movies portray perfect chemistry that sweeps audiences up. Movie romances give viewers the hope of having that one great evening, a charming day date, or even a non-date that goes so well that it fuels the embers of passion and leads to a spicy romance movie. Protagonists have been falling in love on the big screen for decades and watching that first date that changes everything is a thrill.
From coffee that turns into an all-night stroll through the city, to a carefully planned event, romance has a way of sneaking in when the spark is just right. When actors have the right chemistry, they can turn a simple conversation into a game of cat and mouse, where...

When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

Millennials are defined as those who were born between 1980 and 1996. There were no smartphones, people made mixed tapes instead of Spotify playlists, and getting someone's favorite movie on VHS was the best thing ever. Some absolute classics have been made about this unique generation that grew up on the cusp of the internet revolution and experienced not one, but two, recessions. The rise of social media saw the world becoming more connected and open than ever, and films like The Social Network show how this influenced a whole generation.
There was a focus on self-expression and inclusivity, which is a thread that could be seen in various films that focus on millennials as their protagonists. There was also an overwhelming sense of uncertainty about the future, and that tinge of anxiety can be felt in a lot of projects of the time. From the writing to the subject matter, movies...

New Year’s Eve felt a bit different in 1999. Not simply because it was a different time but because of the pesky “year 2000 problem” that’s more commonly referred to as Y2K. The world anticipated global computer system failures that would cause the shutdown of technology everywhere, including power. It created a widespread panic that entailed people prepping for an actual apocalypse. Except, once the clock struck midnight, nothing happened. The computers adjusted just fine, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and the world moved on in a blink.
Y2K director/co-writer Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter imagine what could’ve happened had the Y2K bug actually triggered catastrophe, marrying an apocalyptic horror movie with a raucously entertaining teen comedy.
Mooney, a millennial making his directorial feature debut with Y2K, remembers that specific point in time well. He recalls, “I mean, it was just such a disappointment.

When Amy Heckerling scored a teen comedy hit in 1995 with "Clueless" by working from the Jane Austen's 1816 novel "Emma," Hollywood figured there might be a potential goldmine in youth-skewing films based on classic works of fiction. Gil Junger certainly found this to be the case with "10 Things I Hate About You," his high school-set take on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," while Robert Iscove scored a box office hit with his "Pygmalion" riff "She's All That." So it wasn't all that shocking when Roger Kumble found intrigue and no shortage of sex appeal via "Cruel Intentions," his scheming rich kids reworking of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons dangereuses."
Why did the film work so well? Columbia Pictures' willingness to release the film with an R rating allowed Kumble to push much further with the sensuality. He also had an absolute juggernaut of a young cast in Sarah Michelle Gellar,...

In its 240 years, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ once scandalous (and at one point, banned) 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ has been adapted around 30 times for various stage, radio, and screen productions across five continents. Yet for many, Roger Kumble’s Cruel Intentions has remained one of its most popular retellings.

The series has been getting some bad press recently, with everything that happened with Danny Masterson, Ashton Kutcher, and Mila Kunis. However, when this is put aside, there is no denying that the series was culturally significant.

Teenage dramas have existed for as long as teens have been drumming up drama in schools and colleges. In the ’60s, there were Because They’re Young and Where the Boys Are. The ‘70s had American Graffiti, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever. The genre exploded in the ‘80s with movies like Dead Poets Society, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And the ‘90s gave us The Basketball Diaries, Rushmore, 10 Things I Hate About You, and American Pie. But I think the movie that paved the way for stuff like Gossip Girl, Young Royals, 13 Reasons Why, Elite, Class, Euphoria, Maxton Hall, Hierarchy, and Untamed Royals was the cult classic, Cruel Intentions. It had adult actors playing high schoolers. It was filled to the brim with the risque stuff. And there was a lot of backstabbing and drugs involved. Since this particular subgenre of teen dramas is all the rage now,...

1999's Cruel Intentions belongs in the same bracket as the epoch-defining Clueless, and 10 Things I Hate About You; modern retellings of classic literature that made accessibility the focus of their reinvention. Like the other two, Cruel Intentions goes for a school-age cast, though the school environment is less present, and the story instead focuses on a tight bubble of elite society where everyone is as rich as they are deceitful, and absolutely everyone seems right on the cusp of having sex with each other.
The story is a fairly straightforward thing that focuses on a web of deceit and manipulation woven by two New York step-siblings, played by Ryan Phillipe and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, the very '90s retelling positions Gellar as the grand manipulator, and Phillipe as the destructive cad, who set out to destroy other people's lives for the sake of sport,...

Amanda Bynes had always been a natural performer. She began acting as a child, appearing in several TV commercials, demonstratively oohing and ahhing over the Cut N' Style Barbie or snacking on Buncha Crunch to a variation of the "Addams Family" theme music. At school, she appeared in the musicals "Annie," "The Sound of Music," and "The Music Man." She was bitten by the theater bug early on.
Bynes experienced her big break in 1996 when she joined the cast of the hit sketch comedy series "All That" on Nickelodeon. She was 10. "All That" ran for a whopping 11 seasons from 1994 to 2005 and proved to be a stamping ground for up-and-coming talents, serving sort-of as a junior version of "Saturday Night Live." Keenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Jamie Lynn Spears, and Nick Cannon also broke out thanks to the popularity of "All That." Bynes was a regular cast member for the show's third through sixth seasons,...

Comic book movies can often be quite contentious when it comes to casting, with fan uproar frequently being unleashed on up-and-coming superhero actors despite only sometimes being justified. The reception of a casting announcement can have big implications on the success of a given comic book movie, sometimes riding on a single amazing superhero casting. Public outcry from fans can sometimes be indicative of a poor upcoming performance, but in many cases, hesitations about certain actors stepping into comic book roles end up being completely unfounded.
Actors can be considered unfit for superhero roles for a variety of different reasons. Some casting choices could see actors playing against type, or entering a big-budget superhero film despite little to no experience in blockbusters or action movies. Regardless of whether or not their gambles end up paying off, movie studios often take huge risks with controversial casting decisions for their valuable comic book IPs.

I have a soft spot in my cold dark heart for a well-done romantic comedy. When Harry Met Sally, 10 Things I Hate About You, and 500 Days of Summer all manage to be interesting while presenting a fun love story. Well-made ones are few and far between, mind you, but they scratch a certain itch. So to see Scream‘s Melissa Barrera and Casual‘s Tommy Dewey combine forces for one in the horror space, and you’ve got my interest. Then add in a Monster that looks like Ron Perlman from 90’s TV’s Beauty and the Beast and it feels like Your Monster was made just for me.
I was lucky enough to talk to the cast and director about all things Your Monster. Melissa Barrera and I got into what it’s like to maintain a believable romance when your scene partner looks like a monster...

After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.
The best film of this brief renaissance by far was Peyton Reed's "Bring It On," which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. Julia Stiles is a woman whose efforts to remain sober prove troublesome amid her dysfunctional family in Chosen Family. The Golden Globe and Emmy nominee first found success with her turns in multiple William Shakespeare modernizations, including the Heath Ledger-co-starring 10 Things I Hate About You, Ethan Hawke's Hamlet and Tim Blake Nelson's O. Her star power has only grown since, including starring in the original Bourne trilogy with Matt Damon and in Dexter season 5 as Lumen.
Stiles stars in Chosen Family as Clio, sister to the film's protagonist Ann, just released from her latest stint in rehab after years of struggling with various addictions. Moving back in with their hyper-religious father and eccentric mother, Clio becomes consistently more frustrated with her sister's overbearing nature of making sure she doesn't go back to rehab, while their parents continue to support her with her various ideas of businesses she wants to form,...

Last year, Anyone But You had audiences excited about the great return of the rom-com genre. The film had promising star potential in Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. However, its stars are dimmed considerably by a story that halted any real character development. Anyone But You is adapted from William Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing. A hallmark of movies based on Shakespearean stories is their ability to find a strong central message amid a cacophony of intertwining narratives, and Anyone But You contorted its source material so much that all of its ensemble characters fall flat.
On the contrary, a very different contemporary Shakespeare adaptation did the Bard justice 25 years ago. 10 Things I Hate About You is adapted from Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, another comedy. In this film, Julia Stiles stars as the shrew in question, Kat Stratford, a radical feminist high schooler and punk...

Ah, rom-coms! Who could forget those, silly little romances that made our hearts flutter? The ’90s and early 2000s were pure magic for love stories, they really don’t make them like that anymore! Fast forward to the 2010s, and it feels like the genre has taken a nosedive. But why? Sandra Bullock recently spilled the tea on why classic rom-coms seem to have gone Mia.

Incoming is full of shit — well, one scene is, anyway. The high school comedy, which starts streaming on Netflix on Friday, concerns some uncool male buddies starting their freshman year and trying to navigate the first blowout party of their young lives. In one sequence, a couple of the friends, through some crazy circumstances, end up driving their school’s most gorgeous girl home. She’s really drunk, though, and, well, let’s just say an impromptu trip to Taco Bell turns out not to be a good idea at all. The result is one of the most revolting gross-out scenes in modern comedy. It’s a moment that the writer-director brothers Dave and John Chernin have had in their back pocket, waiting for the right opportunity.
“Man, that was an idea that we’ve had for a long time,” Dave, 39, says over Zoom, laughing. “We didn’t quite know...

You might as well call the 2000s the decade of the parodies. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. Heath Ledger Was One Of The Greatest Actors Of His Generation
When it comes to Hollywood, there are a handful of actors who were generational talents. What makes this worse is the fact that a lot of these actors had their careers cut short due to tragedy. In many cases, this happens just as they are cementing themselves in a big way.
Heath Ledger was precisely one of these talents. The actor from Australia made a splash with American audiences in romantic comedies and more, including a notable starring role in 10 Things I Hate About You in 1999 that really put him on the map.

Wcff opens with Oscar-shortlisted dramedy The Monk and the Gun, directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji. The Bhutanese filmmaker — whose Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom earned a 2022 Academy Award nomination for Best International Film — will be present for a Q&a to follow The Monk and the Gun screening.
The festival closes with Wim Wenders’ Oscar-nominated Perfect Days, a drama about Hirayama (Koji Yakusho), a man who cleans Tokyo’s public toilets, which are renowned for their immaculate appearance.
‘Perfect Days’
“Hirayama clearly derives enjoyment from performing his work well,” the New York Times wrote in a rave review, “but there’s more to his life than labor, and more to this movie than a simplistic celebration of manual toil.”

When it comes to the golden age of horror films—hell, the golden age of films in general, I will die on the hill arguing that it is the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Sure, you might have incredibly valid reasons to argue against that, but this was a time of peak cinema when it comes to my personal media consumption. I consider it a source of pride that my strongest trivia category, were I to encounter it, would easily be Teen Movies of the late ‘90s into the early ‘00s. You see, I was at the perfect age for those movies to make an impact—a nerdy preteen with no siblings who was often glued to the TV. While everyone can easily recall gems like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Bring it On, and Mean Girls, there are an equally large amount of teen...

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 3’ concluded the original Spider-Man trilogy, but not in the best way. The first film was amazing, and the second is still lauded as one of the best comic book movies of all time, but the third movie fell short.
At the time, Sony had ambitious plans for the franchise, including three additional movies and spin-offs. However, after the critical failure of ‘Spider-Man 3’ (despite its commercial success), the studio canceled these plans. Thus, ‘Spider-Man 3’ effectively ended what had been a very successful franchise.
Putting all that aside, the movie will be remembered for Tobey Maguire’s (in)famous “Evil Peter” dance scene. Depending on your perspective, it was either a cringeworthy moment of secondhand embarrassment and laughter or a stroke of comic book genius from a director who understood that comic book characters could also be wacky and fun. Regardless, the scene went down in history.
