The theme song for "The Big Bang Theory" is a fast-talking deluge of pseudo-nerdy references that are juuust incorrect enough to drive real-life nerds a little big crazy. The full version of the theme, rarely played in its entirety before the show, included enough brainy references to be clever, however. It talks about bipeds evolving, the continent of Pangaea, and it contains the lyric "Australopithecus would really have been sick of us," which I deeply appreciate.

Anyone who was around cinema in the early 2000s saw Julia Stiles take the romantic comedy genre by storm. 10 Things I Hate About You and Save The Last Dance were staples of any millenial film collection. She always had a certain something that made her stand out from other leads at the time. So it’s exciting to see her now take the directing route, as she embarks on this new path. A first film is tough, as it can really shape how an audience sees the types of films you’re wanting to make. And while I wasn’t a massive fan of the film (check out my review Here) there’s still plenty of potential for Stiles behind the camera.

I was able to speak with Stiles about her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, and why she chose to adapt a novel for her first feature.

Julia Stiles’ recital of that emotional poem in 10 Things I Hate About You may have cued the waterworks, but she admits it was never supposed to be that emotional in the first place.

In an interview with Bustle released Wednesday, the actress and director of Wish You Were Here reflected on her breakout role as Kat Stratford in the teen rom-com in which she and Heath Ledger’s Patrick Verona fall in love. In one scene in particular, Stiles’ Kat recites an emotional poem to Ledger’s Patrick in which she expresses her heartbreak and feelings for him as she offers 10 things she “hates” about him.

“In the table read with the whole cast, I kind of just read it without any emotion and I do remember the director saying, ‘She’ll be more emotional next time,’ so maybe that sunk in,” Stiles recalled of the poem scene.

Julia Stiles had a 10 Things I Hate About You reunion with Larisa Oleynik at her movie premiere last night!

The reunion took place at the premiere of Julia‘s directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, hosted by Lionsgate and held at the Crosby Street Hotel on Wednesday night (January 15) in New York City.

Larisa, who is now 43, co-starred with Julia, also 43, in the 1999 film, where they played sisters. In the photo to the left, you’ll also see Julia‘s real-life sister, Jane Stiles, who also stars in Julia‘s new movie.

Larisa also reunited with her The Secret World of Alex Mack co-star Will Estes (who you may recognize from CBS’ Blue Bloods!)

Julia Stiles is reflecting on her fond memories with her late co-star, Heath Ledger.

The 43-year-old actress starred alongside Heath in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. In a recent interview with E!, Julia recalled working with the acclaimed actor.

“He was amazing. He was such a bright light,” Julia reminisced, saying that she and the rest of the cast were “close on that set.”

Julia said that Heath had a special presence: “He just walked into the room and lit it up.”

She continued, “He was very kind and generous to me which you know, when you’re an actress in your first leading role in a big studio movie, you need to feel comfortable with the other person. And he was very generous that way.”

The Bourne Ultimatum star also remembered a particularly emotional scene that stood out to her while filming.

Julia Stiles looked back on her 2023 Saturday Night Live cameo on Monday, saying the sketch came together so quickly she struggled to find childcare in order to make it work.

“They contacted me the Friday before the Saturday show,” Stiles said during an interview on Watch What Happens Live. “I scrambled to find someone to take care of my kids until the middle of the night.”

At the time, the 10 Things I Hate About You star had recently welcomed her third child.

Stiles appeared during a segment of SNL‘s “Weekend Update” alongside cast member Chloe Fineman. Together, they recreated and extended the Juilliard audition scene at the end of 2001’s Save the Last Dance. The world anticipated global computer system failures that would cause the shutdown of technology everywhere, including power. It created a widespread panic that entailed people prepping for an actual apocalypse. Except, once the clock struck midnight, nothing happened. The computers adjusted just fine, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and the world moved on in a blink.

Y2K director/co-writer Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter imagine what could’ve happened had the Y2K bug actually triggered catastrophe, marrying an apocalyptic horror movie with a raucously entertaining teen comedy.

Comic book movies can often be quite contentious when it comes to casting, with fan uproar frequently being unleashed on up-and-coming superhero actors despite only sometimes being justified. The reception of a casting announcement can have big implications on the success of a given comic book movie, sometimes riding on a single amazing superhero casting. Public outcry from fans can sometimes be indicative of a poor upcoming performance, but in many cases, hesitations about certain actors stepping into comic book roles end up being completely unfounded.

Actors can be considered unfit for superhero roles for a variety of different reasons. Some casting choices could see actors playing against type, or entering a big-budget superhero film despite little to no experience in blockbusters or action movies. I have a soft spot in my cold dark heart for a well-done romantic comedy. Well-made ones are few and far between, mind you, but they scratch a certain itch. So to see Scream‘s Melissa Barrera and Casual‘s Tommy Dewey combine forces for one in the horror space, and you’ve got my interest. Then add in a Monster that looks like Ron Perlman from 90’s TV’s Beauty and the Beast and it feels like Your Monster was made just for me.
