It's technically a sequel. Though initially marketed as a remake, the character in the film, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is named John Shaft and he is the nephew of John Shaft, played by Richard Roundtree in the 1971 original film. Roundtree also reprises the role in this film. So it is a sequel. Samuel L. Jackson often referred to it as an "update" while promoting the film. Given that Jackson is only 6 years younger than Roundtree, it doesn't make sense for him to be John Shaft Jr.
Yes. The sequel is Shaft (2019), in which both Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree reprise their roles.
So far, 5. First there was Shaft (1971), and it spawned two sequels; Shaft's Big Score! (1972), and Shaft in Africa (1973). This was followed by this film in 2000, which spawned another sequel; Shaft (2019). There was also a short-lived, 7 episode TV series, Shaft (1973), also starring Richard Roundtree.
