- Haricharan Mathur delivers newspapers on his bicycle and lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, India, just like millions of other Bombayites. But for Haricharan there is a difference - he is both deaf and dumb. One day he comically collides with equally deaf-mute, Aarti, and both fall in love and get married. Soon they give birth to a son, who is normal, much to the relief of his parents. One rainy night, their house gets burglarized by Aarti's brother, Kanu, who leaves the door open, and also steals Hari's bike. The child ventures out in the rain, and subsequently dies, leaving both Aarti and Hari devastated. Their lives get turned upside down, as Hari is unable to deliver newspapers anymore, and must find other means of employment to survive. He does so by polishing shoes. In this manner they survive, and give birth to yet another son, and name him Amit. Hari and Aarti are thrilled that Amit is able to hear and speak, and would like him to study and find a better job. - The movie is a lesson on how to live life, examining the lives of Hari Charan Mathur (Sanjeev Kumar) and Aarthi (Jaya Bhaduri), who are deaf and mute. They meet, fall in love, marry and eventually have a child. They raise him well and he marries a girl similar to his parents.
Kanu (Asrani) is a small time petty criminal. He blacks cinema tickets and gambles with friends. He has a deaf and mute sister Aarthi. Durga (Dina Pathak) is their mother. She meets Hari at a local grocery shop and finds that he too is deaf and dumb. Hari saves her from some local goons and drops her home. He meets Durga. Later he suggests a govt school for deaf and dumb for Aarthi. Durga likes the dude.
Aarthi starts her school, where kids are taught to communicate with other deaf and dumb through sign language and then to lip read. Aarthi meets Narayan whom she helps cross the road. Narayan is blind. Aarthi starts dating Hari more regularly and they go for walks on the beach. Aarthi & Hari meet Narayan again on the beach and Hari is able to make Narayan understand that they are deaf and dumb. Aarthi tells Durga about her interest and liking for Hari. Eventually Hari proposes to Aarthi. Intially she refuses as she doesn't know if 2 deaf and dumb people can survive. She realizes that Hari doesn't see his disability as an impediment, rather just an act of God. She accepts and soon they get married.
Aarthi is afraid to have kids as she thinks her kids would be deaf and Dumb like her. But Hari is insistent. Kanu has an evil eye on Aarthi's jewels used for her wedding. He mistress Paro is pregnant and he needs the money for her abortion. All they have to help them is their hope, confidence and some kindness in the society, along with Uncle Narayan (Om Shivpuri), who is blind. Meanwhile, Aarthi gives birth to a son. A few weeks later, on a stormy night, Kanu comes to steal Aarthi's jewels. As Aarthi and Hari are asleep and cant hear him, Kanu easily moves through the house, searches all boxes and finds the jewels. As he exits, he leaves the door of the house open. Hari's boy wakes up and wanders outside and drowns to death in the streets overflowing with water. Aarthi only finds this out the next morning when they both wake up. More bad luck awaits as Hari has to sell his cycle and is then fired from his paper delivery job. He takes up boot polishing to sustain himself and Aarthi.
Soon Aarthi is pregnant again. This time around, Narayan is living with them. and he wakes up Hari at night, if he hears the baby crying. They name the baby Amit. Hari goes back to his boot polishing job and one day is noticed by an army commander, whose boots are shined by Hari. The commander gives Hari the permission to sit in the army campus and soon Hari has many boots to shine. Hari then gets a job at a printing press. Hari does overtime at the factory to support Amit's education. Eventually, for his hard work, Hari gets a promotion and he moves with his family into a brick house. Hari and Aarthi grow old. One day Aarthi passes away. Amit is in college. One day Hari's boss calls him to his home for tea. Hari takes Amit along. At their house, the boss pleads Amit to accept his daughter as his wife. She is mute-deaf. Hari accepts in a heartbeat, but Amit refuses. Hari is heartbroken. Eventually Narayan tells Amit that he is wrong in refusing Hari, who sacrificed everything for the sake of his son. Amit apologizes to Hari and marries the girl. The Koshish continues
But they never give up hope on life and not in one instance during the entire movie do they think about ending it. They live life, fight for it and succeed at a bigger scale than any normal person.
