Known for being natives of the desert planet of Tatooine, they've recently shown up in The Mandalorian, and have appeared in various video games, animated series, and other paraphernalia. Despite their oleaginous reputation, they're considered by some fans to be some of the more adorable aliens in that galaxy far, far away.

Quibi, the well-funded streaming startup launched in April and led by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, has posted select episodes for free viewing on YouTube.

The move is the latest by the mobile-focused service to adapt to the market conditions at launch, which are not what anyone expected. The company has offered a 90-day free trial and also has ramped up efforts to create a way for some users to stream programming via their connected TV for a more lean-back experience suited to the Covid-19 moment. Quibi had initially been purely focused on mobile, with its short-form episodes (aka “quick bites”) appealing to young, on-the-go viewers. During the pandemic shutdowns, few people have been “on the go” anywhere.

With Friday being the final day customers can sign up for the free 90-day trial, Quibi posted the episodes of Most Dangerous Game, The Stranger and Dummy as a way of enticing new users.

“Pitch Perfect” star Anna Kendrick has signed on to star in the short-form comedy series “Dummy” for Quibi, a spokesperson for the video platform confirmed Friday.

Created by “Deadbeat” and “Kidding” veteran Cody Heller, the buddy comedy centers on a writer and her boyfriend’s sex doll. In keeping with Quibi’s concept of short, digestible episodic storytelling, each installment of the series will be 10 minutes or shorter.

Tricia Brock is attached to the project as a director and executive producer. Kendrick will also executive produce.

Exclusive: Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick is set to topline and executive produce Dummy , a comedy for Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s short-form video platform Quibi from Deadbeat co-creator Cody Heller and independent studio wiip.

Tricia Brock (The Walking Dead) has come on board to direct the project, created by Heller. Dummy is a buddy comedy that follows an aspiring writer (Kendrick) and her boyfriend’s sex doll. It will be a serialized movie-length story told in chapters of under 10 minutes in length.

Dummy had been originally developed as a TV pilot. The script was subsequently rewritten as a film and then diced up into 10-minute segments to fit into the concept of Quibi (quick bites).

I’ve always enjoyed the work of both of these actors and it’s great to see them starring in a new film together! The movie tells the story of a retired talent manager Al Hart (Chase), who is reunited with his first client, Buddy Green (Dreyfuss), a comic who quit show business 50 years ago. Well, Hart convinces Buddy to escape the retirement community that they’ve been living in to hit the road for a cross-country comedy comeback tour.

The movie looks like a charming comedy that I would enjoy. It also stars Chris Parnell, Kate Micucci, and Andie MacDowell.

The Last Laugh was written and directed by Greg Pritikin and Netflix will release it on January 11th, 2019.

Netflix’s The Last Laugh is laughing first with the initial trailer from its film starring Chevy Chase, Andie MacDowell and Richard Dreyfuss, which bows in January.

Emmy winner Chase, MacDowell, and Oscar winner Dreyfuss weave the tale of talent manager and widower Al Hart. After 50 years, he reunites with former client Buddy Green, who gave up a promising career as a stand-up comedian to settled down to raise a family. After Al convinces Buddy to perform on a bucket list tour of classic stand-up venues across the Us, Buddy gets one last taste of the life he could have had.

You can tell that Stone was written by a playwright, in that it's primarily a character-driven piece for four talented actors. And the casting is magnificent: Edward Norton, Robert De Niro, Milla Jovovich, and Frances Conroy. It's the kind of acting that would destroy you on the stage, the sheer electricity of those four performances would fry you right in your seats. But this isn't a play, it's a feature film. While the performances are amazing, they're couched in a really insubstantial narrative. There's not a single subtlety or surprise in the entire film, and the actions of the characters feel completely motivated by the page and not the pace. They do stupid and random shit because the script tells them to. There's a world of difference between bluntness and lack of nuance. There's nothing surprising or tense about the film. It unspools like a particularly clunky episode of "NCIS.

Oscar winner Adrien Brody is back in theaters with Predators (i.e. Predators 5: A Reboot??? I don't know. I don't follow these things) and it arrives so shortly after his last sci-fi effort Splice... why not feature him? We never discuss him and isn't there plenty to discuss. As in Wtf with his career? I can't include all 35 movies so I thought we'd pick up just where things got interesting.

Though he's had his share of straight to DVD or barely released indies over the years, he actually started off with quite a few classy projects with the likes of Steven Soderbergh (King of the Hill) and Francis Ford Coppola (New York Stories). He reportedly expected Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line (1998) to be his film-carrying breakthrough but Malick's film was so fluid in the telling that many famous actors were entirely deleted in the final cut and Brody's part was drastically reduced.

Ryan Bingham lives like a man in transition–he has no wife, no home, or familial trappings. His work consists of visiting employees at their workplace and firing them on behalf of their employer, a big firm who doesn’t want to handle the un-pleasantries.

In some sense, he’s a corporate ’sin eater’–carrying a mantle others would rather pass on, and becoming a kind of social pariah as a result. But Bingham flourishes at his work and and even gives inspirational speeches about how to thrive in the industry. He’s the heartbeat of Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air, a charming pic about a less than charming man that wants to position itself as the new ‘American movie’. It misses this mark, and ends up being simply a good film with a great cast and an ambitious director.

Quentin Tarantino is set to receive the Critics' Circle's highest honor, the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Cinema. The 30th Awards will take plave on February 18 at the Landmark Hotel, Marylebone.

London -- Lone Scherfig's "An Education," starring Carey Mulligan, secured seven nominations for the 30th annual London Film Critics' Circle Awards, to be dished out in February.

There was no room for the Danish director Scherfig herself in the best director list of nominations, but her film did receive nominations in the best British film and best screenplay for Nick Hornby, as well as a brace for Mulligan, who appears on the best actress and best British actress lists.

Elsewhere, Hollywood goes head to head with Europe in the best film category as "Avatar" competes with two Cannes prizewinners, "A Prophet," directed by Jacques Audiard, and Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon."

Also vying for the best film plaudit is "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air."

Lfcca organizers said Quentin Tarantino will receive the circle's highest honor, the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Cinema, at the event scheduled for Feb.

When they add a "seemingly normal" female roommate, they found out she's more of a monster than they are. That's the plot of a horror-comedy called Monster of the House directed by Greg Pritikin. Casting is now underway for a principal photography start which is to begin sometime in December. Oscar winner Adrien Brody has signed with CAA for agency representation. He is onscreen in Love the Hard Way and will be seen in the fall in Dummy and The Singing Detective. Brody's credits include The Affair of the Necklace, Summer of Sam and The Thin Red Line.

Director Ken Loach took top honors at the 18th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which concluded Sunday. Loach claimed the Grand Jury Prize in the International Competition for his film Sweet Sixteen. The American Perspectives Jury Prize, recognizing achievement in direction, went to Shane Dax Taylor for The Grey. The Documentary Jury Prize went to Jeff Blitz for Spellbound, which is also nominated for an Academy Award. Special jury prizes were awarded to director Pan Nalin for Samsara, Lena Endre for her performance in Music for Weddings and Funerals and director Greg Pritikin for Dummy. The Fund for Santa Barbara Social Justice Award went to Santa Barbara filmmaker Renee Bergan for her film Sadaa E Zan, shot in Afghanistan.
