The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. Sam, the impish demon played by 7-year-old Quinn Lord that serves as the film’s mascot, personifies the tricks and treats of Halloween while serving as the connective tissue between segments.

Idle Hands, starring Kelly Monaco

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has dominated the contemporary blockbuster ecosystem so thoroughly and for so long now, to the point where it's getting ridiculous, that it may sometimes be easy to forget that there's a whole section of the Hollywood Venn diagram that excludes it while still including Marvel. Although there have been a whopping 34 MCU films (so far), there have also been 39 non-mcu films throughout history based on Marvel Comics publications -- and that's not even counting the ones adapted from comics published by Marvel offshoots, such as "Kick-Ass" and the "Kingsman" and "Men in Black" franchises.
Not for nothing, a lot of those non-mcu films have been pretty darn amazing. There's an argument to be made that, between the "X-Men" and "Spider-Man" series in the 2000s, Marvel movies were shaping and defining superhero cinema as we know it long before the MCU. Even the most critically renowned Marvel movie ever is not,...

When we got a first blurry look at Deadpool & Wolverine's Variants, the hope was that Marvel Studios had tapped the original actors to reprise their roles.
That wasn't the case, unfortunately, but with Cassandra Nova's army used largely as cannon fodder, it was probably for the best because fans would have hated seeing X2: X-Men United star Kelly Hu, for example, wasted as Lady Deathstrike.
Stunt performer Jade Lye plays the villain in her place and concept artist Jonay Bacallado has now shared a closer look at his design for Deathstrike's new MCU costume.
"Lady Deathstrike being one of Cassandra’s henchmen made totally sense when we learnt she was coming back to the MCU," he explains. "She has Adamantium nails and often fought Wolverine in the past, as in X2 from the X-Men movies. Pruned by the Tva, now she’s part of Cassandra’s team in the Void.

Wolverine and Jean Grey are one of the most notable “couples” in the comics—or rather, Wolverine is part of a love triangle with Jean and Cyclops. Their relationship is often depicted as complex and tumultuous due to various factors.
Jean and Cyclops have a long-standing but often messy romantic relationship, while Jean and Wolverine frequently flirt, and in some storylines, they even become romantically involved and have children. Wolverine’s troubled past, violent nature, and struggles with his inner demons make it challenging for him to sustain stable relationships. As a telepath, Jean is acutely aware of Wolverine’s thoughts and emotions, which adds another layer of complexity to their dynamic.
While the comics currently suggest that Wolverine and Cyclops are involved in some sort of unconventional polyamorous relationship, Wolverine’s live-action portrayals have consistently focused on the safer, more popular angle of his unrequited love for Jean Grey.

Wolverine & Jean are among the most notable comic “couples” or rather, Wolverine is a part of a love triangle that involves Jean & Cyclops. Their relationship is often portrayed as complicated or tumultuous in certain storylines due to a plethora of factors.
Jean and Cyclops have a longstanding romantic relationship, but it’s kind of messy. Jean and Wolverine often flirt and in some storylines, they even get together and have kids. Wolverine’s tumultuous past, his violent nature, and his struggles with inner demons can make it difficult for him to maintain stable relationships. Mark Addy’s portrayal of Robert Baratheon was something that fans immensely enjoyed. Given the part that the character had in the show, Addy was able to deliver a fun and versatile take on the character, one that fans still remember fondly more than a decade after the actor exited the show.

Deadpool and Wolverine may have come and gone, but that's only the beginning of an incredibly exciting era for Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a major turning point for the saga, as it officially confronted the long-running franchise with the mutants' story as Hugh Jackman brought his Wolverine back to the big screens, opening the MCU up to the possibility of the X-Men.
He wasn't the only X-Men star to appear in the film either, as Aaron Stanford reprised his role as Pyro from X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand and Dafne Keen returned as Logan's Laura, while Channing Tatum finally got to play the role of Gambit after very nearly playing it in that aforementioned X-Men movie series.
There were rumors of other returnees, but those never panned out. And yet they remain entirely possible in the future due to the Multiverse Saga's existence,...

The first time you watch Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) brawl Yuriko Oyama aka Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu) in 2003's "X2: X-Men United," you may find yourself echoing what Logan says at the outset of their showdown: "Holy s**t." More than 20 years later, the fight between these two super-healing individuals with adamantium-laced skeletons still ranks up there as one of the most savage mutant versus mutant scuffles in all of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies. Despite being restricted by the film's PG-13 rating, this sequence manages to packs in plenty of wince-inducing moments, culminating with Lady Deathstrike's horrifying fate of death by liquified adamantium injection. That she'd spent the whole movie being forced to serve the detestable William Stryker (Brian Cox), who uses a mind control serum to rob her of her agency, only adds to the greater tragedy of the character.
In light of this, it might've felt strange...

X-Men once recruited veteran actor Patrick Stewart to portray the powerful telepath Charles Xavier. And as successful as the original X-Men was, Stewart felt there were huge differences between X-Men and its sequel.

Professor X has become one of Stewart’s most popular roles, perhaps equally or more so than his role as Captain Picard in Star Trek. Halle Berry says her James Bond is Pierce Brosnan, her Die Another Day co-star.
In a new interview, Berry revealed why Brosnan is her favorite 007 agent.
“He will always be my Bond, always. I’m a Pierce Brosnan fan,” Berry said in an interview with Wired. “He restored my faith in men on that movie. There couldn’t be a human who is more of a gentleman than Pierce Brosnan.”
Berry starred in the 2002 spy film Die Another Day in the role of Giacinta “Jinx” Johnson, an Nsa agent. The film, directed by Lee Tamahori, was Brosnan’s last film as the MI6 agent after having starred in 1995’s GoldenEye, 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies and 1999’s The World Is Not Enough.
“Bond wasn’t on my wishlist, no, to be in one but I loved the movies always,” Berry also said. “But having been in one, I feel like I...

Chris Evans might be best known as Steve Rogers, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first Captain America, but most fans will know this was not his first foray into superhero movies. In fact, it wasn't even his first experience playing a Marvel character. Prior to playing Cap, Evans appeared as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in 2005's "Fantastic Four" — a much maligned effort from the days when 20th Century Fox owned a chunk of the Marvel portfolio, only for the studio itself to be subsumed by Disney in 2019.
But when it comes to "Fantastic Four," one thing that you can't fault director Tim Story for is the casting, especially in Evans' case. The actor did a fine job as Johnny Storm, bringing a cocky yet endearing energy to the role, and seemingly maintaining a personal affection for the character ever since. Party time is not so excellent for Brian Cox. As Deadpool & Wolverine easily crosses the $1 billion threshold at the worldwide box office, one Brian Cox – who has his own link to Marvel via playing William Stryker in X2 – is taking issue with comic book movies as a whole via one of the biggest hits of 2024.
Speaking to an audience at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (via THR), Brian Cox said that the artform of film has been heading in the wrong direction, especially compared to TV. “What’s happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do…I think cinema is in a very bad way. I think it’s lost its place because of, partly, the grandiose element between Marvel, DC and all of that. And I think it’s beginning to implode, actually. You’re kind of losing the plot.”

There are a lot of negative words thrown around superhero films these days and it definitely stings a lot, especially for avid fans of Marvel and DC, but Brian Cox is the perfect example of someone who cannot make up his mind.

Not one for keeping things to himself lately, “Succession” star Brian Cox is at it again, this time, lambasting Marvel and DC, claiming that superhero filmmaking has brought about a death of cinema. He’s not the only one to make this claim, but having been a part of popularizing these films with his role in “X2: X-Men United,” he may be able to recognize better than others how out of control the industry has gotten trying to cash in on them.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cox shared his thoughts on the state of cinema while speaking on a panel at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in his native Scotland, expressing his belief that television has surpassed cinema in terms of quality.

In the realm of comic book and superhero films, the MCU remains the dominant force. Meanwhile, Warner’s Dcu is just beginning to take shape, and it’s uncertain if James Gunn can introduce a fresh approach that rivals the MCU’s success.
At the same time, MCU films have been experiencing a decline in performance, with Deadpool & Wolverine being a notable exception, though this was anticipated. The term “superhero fatigue” is gaining traction, despite industry figures like Kevin Feige dismissing it—possibly a case of wishful thinking.
What was once seen as untouchable is now facing increasing criticism, not only from fans but also from industry insiders. Martin Scorsese’s critique of superhero films, supported by many peers, is well-known, and now X-Men actor Brian Cox has added his voice to the chorus of criticism, although his comments were made in a separate context from Scorsese’s.

There have been several successful filmmakers in Hollywood, but talents like Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg are a rarity. The two are cemented as the epitome of class and creativity, and stand tall in their respective genres.

However, the two greats did not always agree with each other’s opinions, but the difference only led to something greater. Kubrick, being the pioneer in film adaptations of several written works, once gave an important lesson to Spielberg with the help of his movie, The Shining.

Steven Spielberg is counted among the legends of the film industry today. In his career spanning decades, he has learned from some of the best in the field, including Stanley Kubrick, an expert in the psychological thriller genre. The Shining is often considered his magnum opus in that field.

Brian Cox, the Emmy award-winning actor known for his role in HBO’s Succession, shared worries about the film industry during a recent panel discussion. The 78-year-old actor noted how superhero movies have come to play a big role in cinema. Cox said these types of blockbuster films are overshadowing other kinds of movies and TV shows that tell unique stories.
At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cox discussed how superhero franchises from Marvel and DC have become very popular. However, he said this trend could be hurting creative work in the movie business. According to Cox, television is now doing what films used to by presenting complex narratives. Meanwhile, cinema may be struggling because superhero and related movies attract so much attention.
Cox specifically pointed to Deadpool and Wolverine as recent superhero films. While these blockbusters make a lot of money, Cox thinks they lead to less variety in productions afterwards.

As far as the comic book and superhero movie market is concerned, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is still the biggest player there. Warner’s Dcu is slowly starting, and we have yet to see how it will play out in the future, but it is a question of whether even James Gunn can bring something new to the genre that will launch something similar to the MCU.
At the same time, the MCU movies have been doing worse than before, and more and more people are talking about “superhero fatigue,” despite the fact that the industry people (especially Kevin Feige) are denying it, but that might just be wishful thinking.
What was once untouchable is now often being criticized, not just by fans but also by people from within the industry. Everyone knows how Martin Scorcese slammed superhero movies – and was supported by many of his colleagues – with X-Men...

Brian Cox is no stranger to blockbuster fare, though much of the acclaim he's earned has been for his work on the stage and in HBO's Succession.
In 2004, he joined the Marvel Universe as the villainous William Stryker in X2: X-Men United. Cox was praised for his performance and, for many of you, it will likely be the movie you know him best for. However, the actor isn't the biggest fan of the genre.
Appearing at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this weekend, Cox told attendees (via The Hollywood Reporter), "What’s happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do. I think cinema is in a very bad way."

Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth has, so far, impeccably proven his outstanding ability to drive people to sheer levels of exhaustion—both physically and mentally. If anything, besides killing it with his perfect and highly unpredictable moves, Deadpool’s giant mouth that just can’t keep shut further helps him defeat his enemies entertainingly like no other.

That said, there have been quite a bit of characters who just couldn’t win against the mercenary and were met with humiliating battles resulting in their witty opponent’s favor. One of these is Anthony “Tony” Masters, the very villain who has defeated even Iron Man and Captain America, but for whom Reynolds’ character would be a nightmare in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tatum’s Gambit was a tribute to the actor’s lost role, as he was earlier chosen for the role in one of the X-Men movies before it was scrapped. The late legend Michael Gambon was a long, long fan favorite for many years, and one of the greatest reasons behind this was his outstanding portrayal of the Headmaster of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter saga, Professor Albus Dumbledore. As dear as the character was to Harry, the actor held an equally special place in fans’ hearts due to the same.

But while he was the only Dumbledore (after the late Richard Harris), he often got mistaken for one other actor who embodied a similar-looking character in The Lord of the Rings saga: Sir Ian McKellen, famous for his wizarding role of Gandalf. It was another downright ridiculous weekend for "Deadpool & Wolverine" at the box office. M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller "Trap" entered the marketplace with an opening weekend just shy of $16 million, but that wasn't nearly enough to challenge Marvel's latest for the top spot. So, director Shawn Levy's R-rated romp through the multiverse easily held onto the crown, taking in an additional $97 million domestically in its second weekend. More importantly, it now stands alone as the highest-grossing "X-Men" movie ever. Frankly, it's not even close and that gap is only going to widen in the coming weeks.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" has earned $395.5 million domestically through two weekends to go with $428.5 million internationally. That figure includes another stellar $110.5 million from overseas markets this past weekend. The film's running global total stands at $824 million, meaning it has passed 2018's "Deadpool 2" ($786.3 million) to become the biggest "X-Men" movie ever at the box office.
