Back in July, Djimon Hounsou signed on to star in a shark thriller called Beneath the Storm alongside Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) and Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2), with Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night) writing and directing for Sony Pictures and producers Adam McKay and Kevin Messick of HyperObject Industries. While we wait to hear more information about that project, Hounsou is already moving on to another interesting film, one called The Monster. Deadline reports that Darren Lynn Bousman will be directing the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writers of Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane.

Prime Video are holding their Prime Video Upfront event and it’s been a day of big TV news, including The Boys being renewed for another season and The Rings Of Power season 2 trailer.

Now, news has reached the Film Stories newsdesk (via Variety) that Prime Video has also greenlit a new Tomb Raider TV series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Waller-Bridge will write and executive produce the series.

Mark L. Lester's ultra-violent 1985 actioner "Commando" is entertainingly ridiculous and ridiculously entertaining. Netflix has dropped a first look at Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, its new anime series featuring voiceover work by Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter).

The project was first revealed by the streamer in early 2021, when the streaming giant announced it was teaming with Legendary to expand the Skull Island and Tomb Raider universes with two new anime series.

The Tomb Raider anime series will follow the popular Square Enix video game and pick up after the reboot trilogy, as it follows Lara Croft exploring new territory. Netflix announced the show’s 2024 premiere during its first ever Drop 01 event, a virtual showcase of its upcoming animated fare.

Netflix hasn’t announced a specific release date for the Tomb Raider series, but they have said that it will begin streaming sometime in 2024. Here’s a bit more information, courtesy of Deadline: Based on the wildly popular action-adventure video game franchise launched in 1996, created by the British game developer Core Design, the anime will follow Croft’s Square Enix run, and is set after the events of the 2013 to 2018 video game reboot.

Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander is finally ready to share her thoughts about Lara Croft’s future and the disappointment of watching plans for another chance to play the character go up in smoke. MGM sold the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise to Amazon Prime Video last summer, effectively killing Vikander’s chance to star in a sequel to her 2018 reboot. Rather than make a sequel to Roar Uthaug’s film, Prime Video is teaming up with writer and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge for a TV series. Amazon wants to turn Tomb Raider into an expansive franchise. While plans for the television reboot remain a mystery, Vikander is not involved.

Speaking with Variety, Vikander told the outlet she’s grateful for the chance to have played such an iconic character and would not rule out returning if asked.

Warner Bros. came out the victor in the battle of Maude v Maude. Roseanne Liang (Shadow in the Cloud) will direct the movie from a script by Scott Mosier (The Grinch). Not much is known about the project, but an insider described it as a “Bond vs Bourne” type of action thriller. I can get onboard with that. While both Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry have their share of action movies under their belts, this will be the first time that the two actors have worked together.

Athens-based company Stefi Productions is developing mini-series project “Letters to Leonard,” a real life inspired drama that explores events in the personal relationship between legendary conductors Leonard Bernstein and Greece’s Dimitris Mitropoulos.

Described as a story about friendship, love, betrayal and the passion for music, the series has been co-created by Pierros Andrakakos, whose credits take in directing Antenna Studios’ series “Save Me,” plus servng as an assistant director on Universal Pictures’ “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” and Paramount Pictures’ “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.”

Also co-creator and the series’ producer, Giorgos Linardakis is known for his work as line producer on Greek TV series such as “Agapi Paranomi” and “Voices in Deep.”

The streaming giant plans on building their own Tomb Raider universe, with the movie, TV series, and video game all interconnected. Updated: Amazon Studios has tapped Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write a TV series as part of a potential Tomb Raider universe that would span television, film and games. According to sources, the TV series is in the works from the prolific Waller-Bridge, creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve and writer on No Time To Die and Solo: A Star Wars Story, and she also could be involved in the potential movie. Dmitri Johnson from dj2, who had secured the rights to the IP, is overseeing the development of the franchise and producing.

The projects are part of a Tomb Raider multi-platform universe Amazon has been putting together, which also includes games; Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics announced a couple of weeks ago an agreement to develop a new Tomb Raider single-player game.

Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is reportedly attached to write a new Tomb Raider TV series for Amazon.

Last summer, MGM reportedly missed the window to greenlight a Tomb Raider sequel, meaning the franchise was up for grabs.

The Hollywood Reporter now cites sources saying Waller-Bridge is writing and executive producing the latest iteration of Lara Croft as part of her overall deal with Amazon.

Waller-Bridge does not plan to star in the series, THR reports. The Independent has contacted Amazon Studios for comment.

The franchise is based on a video game series, which follows the pistol-wielding archaeologist-cum-adventurer Croft as she searches for lost artefacts.

It has previously spawned two film adaptations, first led by Angelina Jolie in 2001 and Alicia Vikander in 2018.

Vikander’s Tomb Raider was poorly received by critics and earned a lacklustre 275m (£228m) at the global box office, which is estimated to be roughly the figure the film needed to break even.

Tomb Raider is in search of a new home. Studios and streamers are bidding to acquire the film rights to the property that for nine years was at MGM and has now returned to producer Graham King and his Gk Films.

Opening bids were taken last week, but things have escalated into a bidding war.

Alicia Vikander starred in a 2018 Tomb Raider reboot for MGM and Gk Films that earned 275 million globally and was to have a sequel directed by Lovecraft County creator Misha Green. That project is now dead, and the role is expected to be recast. The Wrap first reported the news.

MGM, which recently was sold to Amazon, was involved with Tomb Raider thanks to a 2013 deal with Gk Films, which acquired the film rights from video game maker Square Enix in 2011. MGM did not respond to a request for comment.

Lara Croft has hit a snag ahead of the “Tomb Raider” sequel.

Alicia Vikander, who starred as the video-game heroine in the revival 2018 film, told Entertainment Weekly that a follow-up is “in somebody else’s hands” after the Amazon buyout of MGM for 8.5 billion in March 2022. A sequel to “Tomb Raider” was previously announced with “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Tyler attached to write and direct.

“With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics,” Vikander explained. “I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”

While Vikander “can’t really say” much about Green’s update on Croft, the film will no doubt pick up after the events of the 2018 film helmed by Roar Uthaug and detailing Croft’s origin story inspired by her father (Dominic West) and his quest for an ancient Japanese statue.

“Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green has signed a multi-year overall deal with Apple in a competitive situation.

Under the deal, Green will create and develop television projects for Apple’s streaming platform. News of the deal comes just days after it was announced that “Lovecraft Country” will not return for a second season at HBO. Green developed the series for television, with the first season having been based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. She also served as showrunner and executive producer.

The show received strong critical praise upon its release, including earning a Golden Globe nomination for best drama series earlier this year. The show is also eligible for this year’s Emmy Awards.

Green is also known for co-creating and executive producing the WGN America series “Underground,” on which she was also co-showrunner. The critically-acclaimed series followed men and women in pre-Civil War America...

TNT, TBS, and truTV are set to air blocks of HBO Max programming over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The first episodes of the DC series “Titans” and the new Kaley Cuoco series “The Flight Attendant” will both air during the “Thanksgiving to the HBO Max” block, which will run from Nov. 26-29 on each network. The DC films “Aquaman,” “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Wonder Woman” will also air, with “Aquaman” making its network premiere. Elsewhere, Melissa McCarthy will offer a sneak peek of her HBO Max original film “Superintelligence.”

For “The Flight Attendant,” Cuoco will host a curated marathon of “Big Bang Theory” episodes leading up to the airing of the new show’s pilot. Throughout each day, Qr codes will appear on-screen along with network and show specific URLs giving viewers access to subscribe for a free 7-day trial of HBO Max.

‘”Thanksgiving to the HBO Max...

In the first major crossover between WarnerMedia’s HBO Max and siblings TNT, TBS and TruTV, the ad-supported linear cable networks will carry four days of curated HBO Max programming over the Thanksgiving holiday. The stunt is clearly designed to promote HBO Max’s programming and draw new subscribes to the streaming platform.

Warner Media brass have said that HBO Max is a main priority, and the other divisions of the company have been pitching in to support it. When WarnerMedia earlier this year pulled the plug on DirecTV’s Audience as an original programming network, it was transformed into an HBO Max preview channel.

Beginning Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Nov. 29 each network will air its own themed content from HBO Max.

On Thursday, TNT will feature DC movies, including the network premiere of Aquaman, as well as the first episode of season one of HBO Max’s original series Titans.

There was no shortage of frights over the Halloween weekend as a pair of new big-screen chillers managed to break into the Top 10 in another eerily quiet weekend at the domestic box office.

The more successful of the two newcomers (by far) was Focus Features’ Come Play, which debuted at No. 1 with $3.2 million. The PG-13-rated indie about a monster that manifests itself through smart phones and other mobile devices opened in 2,183 theaters and managed to scare up a $1,442 per-screen average. It has yet to open internationally.

Although hardly a blockbuster bow even with the lowered expectations of the coronavirus era, the film which stars Gillian Jacobs and John Gallagher Jr. came out of the gate strong enough to unseat Liam Neeson’s Honest Thief from its two-week reign as the No. 1 movie in North America.

Knocked from its perch to the runner-up spot, Honest Thief stumbled 42.7%, pulling in $1.4 million in its fourth week.

So, imagine a world where you’re an acclaimed filmmaker that has released four films and directed multiple episodes of TV over the past five years. Not only are you prolific, but you have just signed on to helm what might be the biggest film of your career, a sequel in a franchise with a major leading lady. But then the Covid-19 pandemic hits and you’re sitting around with nothing to do, as you can’t begin filming for months.

Rebecca, an important piece of psychological drama literature famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film, is about to be reinvented as a Netflix feature starring Lily James and Armie Hammer.

Director Ben Wheatley updates this classic story of a young newlywed to an aristocrat, finding herself in the shadow of his recently-deceased first wife, with whom the estate’s housekeeper has a dangerous obsession. HBO Max is out with its list of everything coming and going from the new streaming service, and the list includes the 2019 film “Harriet” starring Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.

The HBO Originals coming next month include season four of “Room 104,” HBO Europe’s “Foodie Love,” and documentaries like “Stockton on My Mind” and “Showbiz Kids.” Other films joining include “Motherless Brooklyn,” “Midway,” and “Last Christmas.”

Leaving at the end of the month are “Aquamarine,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Long Shot,” “Crimson Peak,” “The Sun Is Also a Star” and “X-Men.”

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!

HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.

If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Actor Simon Yam, who has appeared in over 125 films including Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, was stabbed in the stomach while at an event in China on Saturday.

The 64-year-old actor was on stage at a promotional event in the city of Guangdong when a man approached the stage and rushed Yam before stabbing him.

Video of the incident appeared on the Chinese social media website Weibo, and showed the suspect taking something out of his pocket as he lunges towards Yam, who can be seen holding his stomach as he attempted to evade the attacker.

Actor Simon Yam was stabbed in the stomach Saturday at an event in southern China, but the injuries were not life-threatening. No motive for the attack has been established.

The veteran Hong Kong actor has appeared in more than 125 movies and 40 television series. He played the villain Chen Lo in the 2003 Hollywood film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. He is also known by his Chinese name Yam Tat-wah.

Police detained a suspect after the stabbing, which took place in the Zhongshan Huoju Development Zone in Guangdong province.

The 64-year-old Yam had to undergo surgery at a hospital in Zhongshan city, according to reports quoting his manager, Lester Mo. “He was stabbed in the tummy area and also got a cut on his right hand,” Mo said.

ABC has picked up to pilot hourlong romantic comedy The Baker and the Beauty, from The Brave creator Dean Georgaris, David Frankel (Manifest), Keshet Studios, Universal TV where the company is under a deal, and ABC Studios.

This is the second time in three years that Georgaris has written two projects that have both gone to pilot the same season. He also has legal drama pilot Bluff City Law at NBC. In 2017, he also had one pilot at NBC and one at ABC: The Brave at NBC, which went to series, and Las Reinas at ABC.

Written by Georgaris and to be directed by Frankel, The Baker and the Beauty marks the second ABC pilot based on an Israeli format this season, joining romantic drama Until the Wedding.

ABC has given a put pilot commitment to an American adaptation of the Israeli series “The Baker and the Beauty,” Variety has learned.

The new version of the one-hour romantic comedy series follows the Miami love story between a simple baker and an international superstar. Legendary’s Pacific Rim Uprising expected to dominate through Universal; Black Panther hits $100m in China.

March 23 Update: Black Panther became the 14th highest global release in history as it crossed $1.2bn this week (March 21) and hit $100m in China to propel Disney past $1bn in international receipts for the year-to-date.

The Marvel Studios release has been Hollywood’s box office sensation of 2018 so far – although its days atop the box office are over. Last week it ceded the crown to MGM/Warner Bros’ Tomb Raider, which faces Legendary Entertainment’s Pacific Rim Uprising in what will be a battle royal this weekend.

Alicia Vikander is stepping into the role of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider -- and absolutely slaying it!

Warner Bros. released the first action-packed trailer for the film on Tuesday, and we think it's safe to say, this is the 28-year-old actress' most badass role yet.

In the trailer, Vikander, dressed in a gray tank top and olive green pants, channels the fierceness of Angelina Jolie, who played the character in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and the sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.

"Close the tomb once and for all," a voiceover says, as Croft leaps, ducks and slides around various structures. "The fate of humanity is now in your hands."

Angelina Jolie returns for Disney sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which is coming in time for Halloween.

Following the sizeable success of the original, Disney moved ahead with a sequel to its 2014 Sleeping Beauty-inspired film, Maleficent. While the first film, directed by Robert Stromberg, already told the story of Sleeping Beauty from the villain's point-of-view --all while turning said awesome villain into the boring hero of the story--Disney is convinced there is more money... err, story left to find in the property!

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the official name of the sequel. The film reunites Angelina Jolie with her Princess Aurora, Elle Fanning. This is Jolie's first sequel since Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, all the way back in 2003. And since she passed on sequels for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt, this is kind of a big deal.

Tomb Raider has come a long way since the first game was released back in 1996 for PC, Playstation and Sega Saturn (remember those?). It is one of the best selling video game franchises of all time. Then in 2001, Paramount Pictures brought the character to life in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Both films starred Angelina Jolie as the adventuress Lara Croft.

Now based of the 2013 action-adventure game, comes the Tomb Raider reboot directed by Roar Uthaug. The film stars Alicia Vikander, Hannah John-Kamen and Walter Goggins. Vikander will be playing the role of Lara Croft who starts off as an ordinary woman working a day job in London. She finds a clue that leads her on a quest to search for her presumed dead father, played by Dominic West.
