I was a film studies student before I ever thought about writing a memoir, so it made sense that my first book would center a deep engagement with the movies as I told a story about my own life. My memoir The Long Hallway is a coming-out and coming-of-age story told through the lens of my childhood obsession with John Carpenter’s classic horror film Halloween, specifically the masked character of Michael Myers as an embodiment of my closeted and—at least to my mind at the time—dangerous and insidious self.

I shared early drafts with film scholar and essayist Doug Dibbern, a friend and colleague whose memoir was also published around the same time as mine. Alone in the Dark: Cinephilia and the Heroic Imagination traces a lineage of film viewing alongside a genealogical and intellectual origin story in what becomes a moving portrait of the development of an aesthetic sensibility.

Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." After the internet went wild speculating that the zombie featured in the excellent 28 Years Later trailer was a zombified Jim, the character played by Cillian Murphy in 2002’s 28 Days Later, Empire Magazine has confirmed that the actor won’t appear at all in the upcoming first entry in the planned trilogy.

Director Danny Boyle reteams with writer Alex Garland on 28 Years Later, with Murphy serving as executive producer, which has only fueled the expectation that Jim would return.

Producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire of Murphy’s hopeful return, “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved, and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

As part of his comeback tour, embattled actor Armie Hammer is ready to gear up and dole out some justice as the star of Uwe Boll‘s latest feature, The Dark Knight. Principal photography for Boll’s vigilante thriller begins in Croatia on January 27, with Hammer eager to step into the scene.

According to Variety, The Dark Knight is based on an original script by Boll, with Hammer playing Sanders, “who takes justice into his own hands as he sets out to hunt down criminals. While his crusade transforms him into a social media sensation and a hero in the eyes of the public, the local police chief sees him as a menace to society and aims to take him down.”

“The story of ‘The Dark Knight’ couldn’t be a more current topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life with this excellent cast,” said Boll about his latest endeavor.

For many years, the high-water marks for movies based on video games were Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 fight film "Mortal Kombat" and his 2002 zombie flick "Resident Evil." Historically, live-action video game adaptations have been notoriously bad. The movie versions of Doom, Hitman, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider were all widely panned by critics and dismissed by fans. One of the biggest problems was that, like a lot of early comic book films, the early video game movies were embarrassed by their source material. The original Mario movie is a Mario movie in name only.

That all turned around in 2023 with the blockbuster success of HBOs The Last of Us. With the video games writer-director Neil Druckmann on board as a co-showrunner, The Last of Us faithfully adapted the game in a way that pleased both long-time players and newcomers. And The Last of Us is...

When the Silent Hill 2 remake was announced two years ago in late 2022, it was met with a great deal of skepticism. Believe it or not, this wasn’t down to the usual cliché of gamer cynicism, there were actually a handful of good reasons to be trepidatious about this project.

First off, there was the fact that the Silent Hill franchise had been left out to dry by Konami since the release of the spinoff title Silent Hill Book of Memories in 2012,, and public opinion of the Japanese company had also soured a great deal since then. When Capcom released its reimagining of Resident Evil 2 in 2019, it was lauded as one of the best horror games ever made. Since then, it’s been the blueprint for other studios to follow for their (many) remakes. Some were successful, like EA’s Dead Space (2023), which kept just enough of its source material’s DNA intact while updating its combat. Others flopped, like Thq Nordic’s Alone in the Dark (2024), which attempted to completely overhaul an outdated 1992 game, but failed to deliver the level of terror of its modern peers.

Production wrapped earlier this summer on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later that intends to launch a brand new trilogy. Boyle and Alex Garland are reteaming for the planned 28 Years trilogy, with Garland writing the first movie and Boyle back in the director’s chair to bring the horror to the screen.

On that note, an article over on Wired this week reveals that 28 Years Later was at least partially filmed with “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s,” specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The God of War gaming franchise is one of those big franchises that is yet to receive a live-action adaptation or an animated series. Following on from the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Netflix’s The Witcher, entertainment fans are seemingly in the era of good video game to TV adaptations.

Sure, fans have seen some not-so-good adaptations in the past, like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), Street Fighter (1994), Alone in the Dark (2005) and so on. Every year, gamers ask themselves: Is this the year video game movies finally gain some respect? And the answer in the year 2024 might, actually, be yes.

No, none of the three video game adaptations that came out last year were outright critical successes. Quite the opposite, actually: critics saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as unremarkable and mediocre, “Gran Turismo” as a glorified advertisement, and “Five Nights as Freddy’s” as a complete borefest. But the movies all performed respectably at the box office, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” smashing expectations to become one of 2023’s biggest horror movies. These successes all affirm that, for better or worse, video game movies are hot right now. And with a new “Sonic the Hedgehog” film coming out this year, there’s a chance that the financial momentum...

Titanfall 2 is a title that will go down in history as a title that offered tonnes of quality but wasn’t appreciated enough, but it wasn’t the only one that didn’t get its due credit.

Some other video games, too, are so ambitious and ahead of their time that it does them more harm than good. These five titles managed to challenge the status quo but couldn’t manage to succeed.

Titanfall 2 is a title that came out in 2016, eight years before the time of writing. Respawn Entertainment created the perfect concoction of incredible gameplay with fast-paced movement and controllable mechs. However, the title was among the few that balanced single-player and multiplayer content quality.

We don’t get a ton of Gothic or romanticized horror anymore, at least not in the sense of the old days. The old days had a bit of a stretch too as I’m talking about the Universal classics and Val Lewton all the way through at least the early run of Hammer Films. To that end, what creature is more romantic or at least romanticized than Dracula and any of his vampire off shoots? While many of the vampiric screen adaptations have that feel to them from Frank Langella to Gary Oldman and David Bowie sandwiched in between, there are few vampires who embody that ideology more than those found in the writings of Anne Rice. While her novel Interview with the Vampire came out all the way back in 1976, it would take nearly 20 years for the adaptation to hit theaters with the movie of the same name...

The games industry is on the precipice; so much is currently at stake, and the big corporations seem intent on barreling towards the edge without a thought about the potential fallout.

With so much news of studio closures and big buyouts that result in more studio closures, it feels like unique games are not being given the chance they deserve anymore, in favor of the big proven IPs getting the spotlight.

Gaming’s current whoopee cushion, Embracer Group, continues to struggle and fumble to recover from its recent failures. After laying off nearly 4500 employees, endangering the entire gaming industry, and canceling 80 projects since June 2023 alone, it’s clear why almost nobody holds the company in high regard anymore.

However, the company may yet need to brace itself once more for a storm of hatred, as right after shuttering Pieces Interactive, it is now more aggressively adopting AI into its and its subsidiaries’ workings.

The current precariousness of the video games industry took another hit today. Weeks after Embracer Group revealed that Pieces Interactive’s remake of Alone in the Dark had “performed below management expectations”, it’s now being reported that the developer has been shut down by Embracer Group. Pieces Interactive had posted to the main page of their website and on the studio’s social media accounts the caption “Pieces Interactive: 2007–2024. Thanks for playing with us.”

Per Game Developer, former Pieces Interactive character artist Gustav Pethrus confirmed via LinkedIn that the company was indeed closing.

The closure of Pieces Interactive follows the layoffs done earlier in the year at the developer by Embracer Group, which was part of a major restructuring by the company. Borderlands developer Gearbox Interactive and Evil Dead: The Game developer Saber Interactive had been sold off back in March, while Eidos Montreal (which Embracer had acquired...

There are a lot of reasons why a video game console can fail. Bad marketing, outdated technology, excessive price, lack of third-party titles, the impact of solid competition, and so on. So many factors go into the existence of these devices and so much can go wrong. Even Nintendo has stumbled so hard that their faulty decisions occasionally leave radioactive footprints in video gaming history.

Not every console can be a major success story, but no console is truly without value. Well, maybe the Mattel HyperScan…but other than that! Every failed console has at least something worth checking out. Hell, the Sega Dreamcast had Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and SoulCalibur and it was still the death knell for Sega making hardware!

So here are some of the best games to come from game systems that fell flat.

One of the first things the player does in Skald: Against the Black Priory is choose whether to turn on the filter to emulate a Crt screen. The game is, down to its every Commodore 64-colored pixel, a throwback experience, a party-based RPG that developer High North Studios has patterned after classics like the Ultima games of the 1980s. Yet for as overt as Skald may be about its influences, it takes those trappings in a new and idiosyncratic direction.

The game boasts a variety of distinct classes to choose not only for your player character but for the blank-slate mercenaries that you can hire in place of the premade story characters. With all sorts of warriors, thieves, spellcasters, and combinations thereof, Skald features an impressive number of permutations for your eventual six-character party, to the point where my single 25-hour playthrough hardly revealed all the classes and abilities that the game has to offer.

Konami may get a bad rap for having squandered the Silent Hill franchise in the years leading up to the recent series renaissance (which is set to culminate in both a big budget remake of Silent Hill 2 as well as a new Christophe Gans film), but there was a time when the company was criticized for releasing too much Silent Hill media in an attempt to keep the IP fresh in consumers’ minds.

While some of these franchise expansions were obvious cash-grabs, others experimented with the cursed town in ways that we’ve yet to see again. And in honor of the new Silent Hill experiences set to grace consoles and cinema screens in the upcoming year, today I’d like to look back on a collection of forgotten spin-offs from the 2000s that I think (mostly) deserve more love.

For every horror movie that turns into a massively profitable hit, there are plenty more that didn't light up the box office. In fact, they continue to be made with such frequency in part because their budgets are usually low enough that it's pretty easy to recoup expenses with anything other than a total disaster. Still, there are plenty of times when horror films don't perform as well as expected. Sometimes they are reassessed years after release with much more favorable results, and the horror genre is rife with box office flops that became cult classics and underrated "masterpieces."

But then you've got the true, out and out stinkers. The films that couldn't even keep up the pretense of being merely a disappointment, and led their studios to pull them from theaters prematurely in an effort not to send good money after bad. Their downfall could have been a result of controversy,...

It appears that this year’s resurrection of the Alone in the Dark series will have a difficult time getting a follow-up. According to the latest earnings report from Embracer Group, the reimagining of the 1992 Survival Horror cult classic has sold less than expected.

According to the report, Alone in the Dark saw a positive reception from fans with its launch in March, but in contrast received a “mixed reception” from critics and “ultimately performed below management expectations.” Sales figures for the game were not revealed, but to put some perspective on the game’s performance, according to SteamDB, the currently player count is less than 70 at the moment, compared to a concurrent player count peak of 1,628 when it launched.

This report comes a month after news that Embracer Group had laid off several staff at Alone in the Dark developer Pieces Interactive not long after the game’s release.

Speaking with Deadline this week, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman was flat out asked if Cillian Murphy will be back to star, and his answer suggests that is indeed the plan.

“Yes,” Rothman answered, “but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way.”

He continued, speaking more generally about 28 Years Later, “This is Danny at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it.”

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland (Annihilation, Men), the director and writer behind 2002’s hit horror film 28 Days Later, are reteaming for the long-awaited sequel, 28 Years Later. THR reports that the sequel has cast Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu).

The plan is for Garland to write 28 Years Later and Boyle to direct, with Garland also planning on writing at least one more sequel to the franchise – director Nia DaCosta is currently in talks to helm the second installment.

No word on plot details as of this time, or who Comer, Taylor-Johnson, and Fiennes may play.

Just in case you haven’t picked up Alone in the Dark yet, Pieces Interactive and Thq Nordic have released a new Accolades trailer for the reimagining of the cult classic “that set the benchmark for an entire genre.” Mixed in amongst the quotes and scores are various clips and quips from Alone in the Dark‘s eclectic cast of characters, as well as scenes of the various Eldritch horrors Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood face throughout the game.
