If your thirst for non-stop action isn’t sated by the bloodletting in “Gladiator II,” take a gander at previous epics like “Spartacus” and “Ben-Hur,” which both heavily influenced the original “Gladiator.”

We’ve also thrown in some cinematic suggestions that go beyond Ancient Rome, with sprawling battles in West Africa, Persia, Spain, Japan and Norway, and confrontations that don’t necessarily involve a sword and shield.

The Oscar-winning Ridley Scott epic is obviously the template for the new sequel, but if for some reason you haven’t seen Russell Crowe’s Maximus (almost) single-handedly upending the Roman Empire, you should remedy that with due speed. The film, which won five Oscars, including one for Crowe as Best Actor, is always worth revisiting, especially in light of the many callbacks in the new film. Strength and honor!

While “Wicked” looks to earn one of the best opening weekends of the year, Paramount is hoping to entertain the masses in its own way with “Gladiator II,” Ridley Scott’s legacyquel to his 2000 Best Picture winner. It marks the return of a type of film once thought to be extinct: the sword-and-sandal epic.

The original “Gladiator” starred Russell Crowe as a Roman general reduced to life as a gladiator as he seeks to avenge his wife and child who were slain at the hands of a corrupt emperor. It was part of a history of ancient civilization films that peaked in the 50s with films like “The Ten Commandments” and “Ben-Hur” but persisted into the 2000s with films like “Alexander,” “Troy,” and “300” before ceding the cultural spotlight to comic books and sci-fi franchises.

Nearly a quarter-century later, the return of “Gladiator” marks the return of sword-and-sandals for the first time in a generation.

After a zombie heist movie, two poorly received sci-fi epics, and an animated series about Norse mythology, Zack Snyder‘s next project at Netflix is…an action movie about the LAPD? THR reports that, yes, something more grounded than superheroes, comic book adaptations, bad space opera, and the undead is indeed Snyder’s next feature film. Wonders will never cease.

With the Rebel Moon films in his rearview, Zack Snyder is set to reteam with Netflix on an untitled project on the Los Angeles Police Department, in early development at the streamer, Deadline has confirmed.

The film co-written by Snyder and Kurt Johnstad — a longtime collaborator on projects like 300 and Rebel Moon — is set in a high-stakes world of life and death, watching as an elite LAPD unit is relentlessly confronted with the unforgiving collision of law and morality.

Snyder will produce alongside wife and creative partner Deborah Snyder, as well as his partner Wesley Coller for Stone Quary. This marks the fourth feature to fall under the creative partnership between Stone Quarry and Netflix, after Rebel Moon and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Stone Quarry also produced Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves for Netflix, and debuted animated series Twilight of the Gods on the streamer in September.

Henry Winkler and Lena Headey have joined Bob Odenkirk in the upcoming action movie “Normal,” from the producing team behind the 2021 hit “Nobody.”

In “Normal,” Odenkirk plays Ulysses, who is appointed substitute sheriff in the tiny Minnesota town of Normal, populated by friendly Midwesterners. When the local bank is sacked, Ulysses “unknowingly uncovers something far more explosive than a simple bank robbery,” per the logline.

Winkler, star of “Happy Days” and “Barry,” will play the mayor of Normal, while “Game of Thrones” and “300” favorite Headey is the local bartender, Moira.

“Normal” is directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay written by “John Wick” creator Derek Kolstad, who shares a story credit with Odenkirk. Producers are Marc Provissiero (“Nobody,” “No Hard Feelings”), Odenkirk and Kolstad, who all recently wrapped “Nobody 2.”

From 2020 to 2022, Bruce Willis cranked out a huge number of movies, most of them low-budget sci-fi/action films that all went straight-to-video, and usually playing brief, supporting roles. The many films were, by and large, panned by critics and mocked by baffled fans, all of whom wondered by Willis didn't appear to have much on-camera dialogue, or why he wasn't the lead character. Director Zack Snyder has been rumored to return to the world of 300 for a new sequel, Born of an Empire, leaving some questioning whether it will be released soon.

In 2006, long before his days at DC, Zack Snyder adapted another comic book in Frank Miller's 300, a war feature set in Ancient Rome starring Gerard Butler.

The filmmaker returned to that world with 300: Rise of an Empire in 2014 with a tale that took place before, during, and after the events of 300. Snyder co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad while Noam Murro took on directing duties.

From Blood of Zeus to Record of Ragnarok, several anime follow the culture of retelling mythological tales. With his series Twilight of the Gods, Zack Snyder isn’t far behind either. Zack Snyder adapted Frank Miller’s historically inaccurate comic book tale of the Battle of Thermopylae to give fans a great David vs Goliath war story in 300. It is coming to Hollywood’s attention just how well live-action adaptations can be made and how profitable they are if they are done right. The Last of Us, One Piece, Rurouni Kenshin, and Alita: Battle Angel are only a few to be named. If the approach isn’t wrong, neither would the execution and response. This is also something many are hoping to see with Destin Daniel Cretton’s Naruto film.

It is hard to imagine a Zack Snyder film without his trademark slow-motion shots, extensive CGI, and biblical references. But, the Man of Steel filmmaker’s feature film debut had very less of his signature filmmaking techniques but propelled him into the mainstream. Many fans still believe his remake of Dawn of the Dead is still his best film.

Snyder himself has spoken about being proud of what he could do with the film. A remake of George A. Romero’s classic horror film, the film was written by James Gunn. Both Gunn and Snyder would cross paths again to make two separate iterations of Superman in their careers. Snyder’s debut, despite being his best, is one of his lowest-grossing films.

TheWrap can exclusively reveal that Emily Hampshire is joining “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice,” the high-concept action movie from writer/director BenDavid Grabinski.

She will star alongside the already-announced Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza González, Jimmy Tatro and Keith David.

The movie is a buddy action-comedy set in the criminal underworld; Hampshire will play a crooked cop.

The actress is perhaps best known from her work on “Schitt’s Creek,” the critically acclaimed comedy that ran for 80 episodes between 2015 and 2020. Hampshire has also appeared in David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” and, earlier this year, “Humane” for David’s daughter Caitlin Cronenberg. She also starred in the “12 Monkeys” television series and the British supernatural series “The Rig” for Prime Video.

Principal photography on “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice” started in Winnipeg earlier this month. The movie is produced by Andrew Lazar for 20th Century Studios, with Larry Fong serving as cinematographer.

The director said during Bill Maher’s YouTube (video) podcast “Club Random” that the original “Toy Story” trilogy is one of the greatest trio of films of all time. According to Tarantino, the franchise overextended with the fourth installment. Well, he’s gonna hate this news: a fifth “Toy Story” was announced earlier this year with original director Andrew Stanton returning to the chair. “Toy Story 5” will center on children who become obsessed with technology; it is slated for a June 19, 2026 release.
