A super-meta, super-prescient skewering of the showbiz world, and in particular, the relatively primitive phenomena of celebrity reality TV, “The Comeback” looked destined for the status of one-season wonder when HBO pulled the plug in 2005. “I was aware that it was mainly straight, white guys who couldn’t watch it,” its star Lisa Kudrow later acknowledged, perhaps explaining how douchebro counterpart “Entourage” — whose ratings it often matched — was allowed to run for eight (plus a truly loathsome film).
Thankfully, after a nine-year period in which the show had been reevaluated as a cult classic, Kudrow and co-creator Michael Patrick King were afforded the opportunity to reintroduce their glorious comic creation, the egotistical yet strangely sympathetic enigma that is Valerie Cherish for a second season. That hurrah ran beginning November 9, 2014, and inspired the very opposite response to her well-worn catchphrase, “I don’t want to see that.”

Jack Jones, a singer who found fame and chart success on the easy-listening side of the street in the 1960s, and who later became etched in television-watching America’s psyche with the “Love Boat” theme, died Wednesday at 86.
Jones died of leukemia at a hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif., his wife of 15 years, Eleanora Jones, said.
Jones had hits on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, but his highest chart numbers could be found on what was then known as the easy listening chart, which later became adult contemporary. In the easy listening format, he had No. 1 singles with “The Race is On” in 1965, “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” in 1966 and “Lady” in 1967.
In particular, “The Impossible Dream” — a cover of the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical “Man of La Mancha” — became culturally ubiquitous, through Jones’ frequent TV appearances, even though it peaked at No. 35 on the Hot 100, where it...

From ‘Curb’ to ‘The Comeback,’ HBO knows comedy.
Writing a list of the top HBO comedy TV shows of all time is hard because it’s subjective. What I think is funny and what you think is funny is different – and we’re both right (except I’m more right). Still, it’s fun to do and I can use the release of the new HBO comedy TV series “The Franchise” as an excuse to do it.
With new episodes dropping on Sunday nights, “The Franchise” follows the crew of an unloved franchise movie as they showcase the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking. Sam Mendes is co-creator, so he’s bound to bring the realism having spent years and years of his life making franchise movies. More importantly – as this list will exemplify - HBO knows comedy. Fall is here, which means it’s time to bundle up on your couch and stream the weekend away. Let’s get into it: There’s plenty to enjoy in October on Netflix, from a new Ali Wong special to new seasons of shows like “Love Is Blind” and “Unsolved Mysteries.” The real unsolved mystery is how it feels like there is more “Love Is Blind” dropping every month, but I digress.
October also brings with it the chance to watch Season 1 of “Yellowjackets” (a Showtime hit) for the first time on the Netflix platform, as well as more “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer.” The best bet, however, is the return of Keri Russell.
Top Pick: “The Diplomat” Season 2
Russell returns as U.S. ambassador to the U.K. Kate Wyler in this “The Americans” meets “Homeland” Emmy-nominated hit. Season 1 ended with a massive cliffhanger, so the six-episode Season...

“I keep slipping into Valerie Cherish, don’t I?” Meredith Hagner has done plenty of press in her career, particularly for her breakout role in Search Party and the Vacation Friends franchise, but this is the first time she’s sat down for a meal and really rehashed her full biography with a recorder running. She’s concerned she’s trafficking in the same acting cliches as Lisa Kudrow’s famously deluded character in The Comeback.
But the cliches along the 37-year-old’s career path sound novel. They’re almost from another time. She moved to New York from North Carolina after graduating high school on the promise of an unpaid job in a Fringe Fest play. She slept on a hand-me-down hospice bed (with rollers!) that her grandmother had just died in. And, to pay rent on the railroad apartment she shared with a server at cringe tourist trap Jekyll & Hyde Club,...

Lisa Kudrow famously played Phoebe Buffay for 10 years on “Friends.” But before that, she was fired from another classic NBC sitcom: “Frasier.”
Kudrow was originally cast in the iconic role of Dr. Frasier Crane’s radio producer Roz Doyle, who would ultimately be played by Peri Gilpin. Kudrow said she was told “this isn’t working” by “Frasier” director James Burrows during the run-through of the pilot episode.
“I didn’t film it. I got fired from ‘Frasier,'” Kudrow said on the “SmartLess” podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. “I was trying to like [ask], ‘What can I do?’ But I think they did make a casting mistake because I went to the network with Perri Gilpin. I think they were just correcting a mistake, because Peri should have always been Roz.”

A couple of years ago, Taika Waititi slid into Lisa Kudrow’s Instagram DMs with a once-in-a-lifetime proposition: How would she feel about visiting New Zealand for the first time and filming a fantasy show — a genre she had yet to explore — for six months?
It was an offer that Kudrow, who was born and raised in Los Angeles and doesn’t particularly love to travel for long stretches of time, couldn’t pass up. The show in question was Time Bandits — Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris’ series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy classic. The original film starred Gilliam’s Monty Python co-stars John Cleese and Michael Palin, as well as Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall and Ian Holm.

“I don’t want to see that!” Or do you? That famous line from TV’s one-time “it-girl” Valerie Cherish may hold new meaning as the actress behind the character, Lisa Kudrow, shares an update on a possible comeback for “The Comeback.” In a recent interview with Newsweek for her latest show, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s reinvention of Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” for Apple TV+, Kudrow expressed her appreciation for fans of the cult HBO mockumentary series.
“I’m just thrilled and adore anyone who has the level of appreciation for ‘The Comeback’ that meets the level of pride I have for doing that show,” she said. “That is thrilling. I’m happy to hear that.”
“The Comeback” began following Kudrow’s stint on the long-running hit series “Friends” and showrunner Michael Patrick King’s engagement on “Sex and the City.” Kudrow came up with Valerie Cherish...

Maya Erskine may be having a pretty strong run right now after the success of “Pen15,” her Hulu comedy series she co-created with Anna Konkle and Sam Svibleman, and now Amazon Prime’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which is placing her in the awards conversation for drama, but this confident display of her talents wasn’t always a guarantee. In a recent piece for the Los Angeles Times, Erskine recalled how she was actually cut the first time she acted on a set.
“It was ‘Hart of Dixie’ on [The] CW,” she said. “I just had one line that was like, ‘Is this seat taken?’ And I swear to you — have any of you seen ‘The Comeback’ where Lisa Kudrow runs her line over and over throughout 24 hours? We're nearing the halfway point of 2024, and Apple is still doing its best to mimic Pinky and the Brain with world domination in mind, at least on the streaming front.
Credit where credit is due. Apple is nothing if not on-brand when it comes to quality over quantity.
There's little doubt that some programs popping up on Apple TV + over the years have been duds, but quality duds indeed.
What Is Time Bandits About?
Apple has announced its next assault on our streaming lives by turning back the clocks to an oldie but goodie known as Time Bandits.
For the uninitiated, Time Bandits is a 1981 film by Terry Gilliam. It is a dark comedy filled with Gilliam's bizarre filmmaking aesthetic.
Taika Waititi, Iain Morris, and Jemaine Clement lead the way as co-creators and co-showrunners.
With Lisa Kudrow (Friends and The Comeback) on board in a leading role, prepare for some serious buffoonery.

Now, we finally have a first look at the series thanks to EW's summer TV preview.
Kudrow will lead a cast that also includes Kal-El Tuck (Unseeing Evil), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), Tadhg Murphy (Conversations With Friends), Roger Jean Nsengiyumva (You Don’t Know Me), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), Kiera Thompson (Martyrs Lane) and Rachel House (Heartbreak High).

Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

From Rocky Balboa fights to cornfield baseball games, virtually every mainstream sport has received a few moments in the Hollywood spotlight. But it’s hard to think of a sport more intrinsically intertwined with cinema than bodybuilding. Football fans might enjoy watching “Remember the Titans” on an offseason afternoon, but cinematic recreations are unlikely to scratch the same itch as live games on an NFL Sunday. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, has enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with Hollywood ever since a certain Austrian named Arnold Schwarzenegger set foot in California. For the past half century, documentaries about the sport have often drawn more mainstream attention than any live broadcast of an actual competition.
In many fans’ eyes, the sport of bodybuilding first gained mainstream legitimacy with the release of “Pumping Iron,” George Butler and Robert Fiore’s landmark 1977 documentary about Schwarzenegger’s preparations for the Mr. Olympia competition. In addition...

The cast of Friends used collective bargaining to level out their salaries. As an ensemble cast, they wanted to be treated as equals as their wages grew from $22K per episode to $1M. Each cast member of Friends earned around $90 million in base salary alone from the show before the addition of any backend bonuses and ongoing royalties from syndication, racking each actor up an impressive net worth. For 10 seasons, the Friends cast was considered the gold standard of sitcom television, but where do they stand financially today? Here is the net worth of the Friends cast ranked from richest to poorest.

Lisa Kudrow and long-time producing partner Dan Bucatinsky reenacted a classic scene from the second season of The Comeback after the actors noticed they were in a trailer similar to the one they worked on in the HBO comedy.
“I’m in a trailer with…,” Kudrow says in a video she shared on Instagram before panning over to a happy Bucatinsky waving at the camera.
Kudrow added, “Dan just realized this trailer is the same exact configuration from… this scene.”
Bucatinsky said that “it might be even the same trailer” used in the mockumentary before reenacting the scene.
The scene was when Bucatinsky’s Billy Stanton comes into Valerie’s trailer fuming because she’s about to drop him. Before Valerie could say a word, he decides to quit, throws his phone and stormed off.

Not many original Warner Brothers’ IPs are quite as unique as ‘The Animaniacs’. Originally airing from 1993 to 1998, it followed the mischievous antics of three siblings (and various side characters) as they caused various disturbances around the Warner movie lot. These antics take the form of a variety sketch show, with episodes containing three different segments that often careen into each other. But that’s not the only thing that made this show unique. It was ahead of its time in many ways. The series often indulged in meta humor, leading to pranks and parodies on actors, movies, and Warner Brothers itself. The innovative sitcom left a sizable hole in its place after it went off the air. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. The new Hulu sitcom that parodies sitcoms — debuting Tuesday, Sept. 20; I’ve seen the first four episodes — is one of the year’s funniest new comedies, gleefully skewering the television industry with razor-sharp barbs that approach the lofty heights of The Comeback and BoJack Horseman. If you watch...

“Abbott Elementary” obviously shares some DNA with “The Office” — between their mockumentary formats, a mutual director in Randall Einhorn, and Tyler James Williams serving the best camera stares since John Krasinski — so perhaps it makes sense that “Abbott” will have to pull off a feat that was last accomplished by “The Office” to win the Best Comedy Series Emmy.
The ABC sitcom scored seven nominations for its breakout first season: comedy series, actress (Quinta Brunson), supporting actor (Williams), double supporting actress (Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph), writing (Brunson) and casting. But it was Awol in one key category: directing. “Abbott” — which submitted two episodes in directing, including the pilot helmed by Einhorn — missed out to “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “Hacks,” “The Ms. Pat Show” (the required multicam nominee), “Ted Lasso” and two episodes of “Only Murders in the Building.” “The Office” was the last show to win Best Comedy Series without a directing nomination,...
