The Art Directors Guild has pulled back the curtain on its 2025 career honorees and added a legend from Hollywood’s Golden Age to its Hall of Fame.

Art department veterans Lisa Frazza, Barbara Mesney, Dan Sweetman and J. Dennis Washington are set for the guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award, while the late Oscar winner Carl Jules Weyl — whose credits also include Casablanca and The Adventures of Robin Hood — is its newest Hall of Famer. They will be feted at Adg’s 29th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on February 15 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

Actor Josh Brolin is one of the frequent collaborators of the Coen brothers, working with the acclaimed filmmakers on three movies. Their collaboration started with the 2007 Western crime-drama film No Country for Old Men. In the film, Brolin plays the role of Llewelyn Moss, who finds himself involved in a brutal attack by a pit bull.

Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. Roberto Orci, a screenwriter on the “Star Trek” and “Transformers” franchises, was accused in a lawsuit Monday of repeatedly beating and sexually assaulting his wife.

Adele Heather Taylor, an actor in “The Blacklist,” “Hail, Caesar!” and more, alleges in the suit that Orci was bipolar, an alcoholic and would fly into violent rages. She alleges that he would call her a “slut,” a “whore” and would drag her around the house and beat her, leaving bruises all over her body.

In May 2022, she alleges that Orci chased her into the garden and pinned her down on the ground and threatened to rape her. The following month, she alleges that he sexually assaulted her in the garden, telling her, “You enjoy being raped.”

She also alleges that Orci called the police on her in April 2020, after she had tried to fight him off, and that she was arrested for domestic abuse.

The first solo narrative feature from one half of the Coen Brothers follows two lesbian roommates whose road trip quickly escalates to a crime caper when they find a valuable suitcase in the trunk. It’s hard to put into words the kind of the disappointment that comes with realising that one of your favourite filmmakers has made a truly terrible movie. That realisation hit me approximately 10 minutes into Drive-Away Dolls, the new film by one half of acclaimed filmmaking duo The Coen Brothers.

Alongside his brother Joel, Ethan Coen has given us more than 4 decades of brilliant films ranging from quirky black comedies – A Serious Man, Hail, Caesar!, Inside Llewyn Davis – to beautifully devised crime capers – Blood Simple, No Country for Old Men and True Grit being just a few – but recently the prolific brothers took a break from working together. This resulted in Joel Coen’s multi-awarded nominated The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021, and the soon to be released chaotic lesbian sexploitation comedy Drive-Away Dolls from his brother Ethan.

Exclusive: David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) has signed on to star in Forelock, a dark comedy marking the solo feature directorial debut of Caleb Alexander Smith (NCIS).

The filmmaker also stars in the pic, which he scripted. Emily Swallow (The Mandalorian), Alimi Ballard (Queen of the South) and Chloe Farnworth (MaXXXine) round out the cast.

Forelock centers on a naive fitness enthusiast (Smith) seeking a fresh start in Los Angeles, watching as he collides with a Hollywood Boulevard grifter (Krumholtz) who exploits his uncanny resemblance to the world’s most famous superhero.

Pic is the first for Midnight Chimes, the film and TV production company founded last year by sports journalist and broadcaster Lindsay McCormick and Smith. Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” will retain its holding as the top film on domestic charts this weekend, besting a trio of new releases in the manga adaptation “Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training,” the faith-based Hilary Swank drama “Ordinary Angels” and Ethan Coen’s lesbian crime caper “Drive-Away Dolls.”

“One Love” added $3.7 million to its domestic haul on Friday, marking a modest 51% drop from its gross seven days ago. After opening on Valentine’s Day, the Bob Marley biopic has now earned a solid $61 million across its first 10 days in North American theaters. To compare against genre contemporaries, it’s pacing a bit ahead of the $50 million that “Rocketman” earned in 2019 across the same period of time, and a chunk behind 2022’s “Elvis,” which nabbed $66 million in 10 days. Worldwide, “One Love” has now surpassed $100 million.

The Coen brothers broke up four years ago, and it has taken them a while to come out with solo albums that define their identities. In 2021, Joel Coen directed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was a dazzling black-and-white pastiche of a Shakespeare drama. It was well-done but felt like a one-off, a decision by Coen to serve the material. One year later, Ethan Coen came out with “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a small-scale rock ‘n’ roll documentary that he made during the pandemic; it was a YouTube clip job, and on those terms expertly crafted — but even after Jerry Lee died (five months after the film’s Cannes premiere), it took ages for the film to be released.

Now, though, we finally have a Coen movie in which one of the brothers puts his solo stamp on filmmaking. “Drive-Away Dolls,” directed by Ethan Coen, is a crime-speckled road-trip...

“The first lesson I had with him was actually in May of 2021. He was shooting ‘Bones and All’ at the time, and he came in with like this shocking red magenta hair and like super, super skinny Timmy and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s not what I was expecting.'” But Gattelli pointed out that with Chalamet’s famous background at Laguardia High School, it wasn’t like starting from scratch. “And he has really great rhythm, so it wasn’t hard for him to pick it up.”

Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor who excelled in Shakespeare productions and found later acclaim as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, has died aged 82.

“Cobweb”, Kim Jee-woon's tenth feature film, marks the director's return to comedy for the first time since the beginning of his career. This satire on the film industry is a true cinematic layer cake: one can dig into it with hearty bites for the sheer pleasure of the visual feast, or one can peel it apart, layer by layer, to unveil a fascinating portrayal of the dark period of Korean history in the 1970s and a profound introspection by the director on creativity and the filmmaking profession.

Kim Jee-woon began his career in the 1990s as an actor and a theater director before directing his debut feature film, “The Quiet Family”, in 1998. He is part of a new generation of filmmakers, along with Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, who no longer followed the traditional apprenticeship model of old studios, but are authentic cinephiles who came to cinema out of pure passion.

Something I think a lot of film and television fans forget is how everyone who helps create those films and shows are just going to their jobs like any other person. AppleTV+’s “Schmigadoon!” took a bold leap in its second season by transplanting its snarky, sympathetic central couple (Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong) from the “Corn Puddin’” territory of musical theater’s golden age to the torn-stocking, cleaver-wielding recesses of the 1970s, with a little hippie free love thrown in for good measure.

Beneath every placid surface and between each crashing wave, the movies’ most magical aquatic adventures portend the possibility of mermaids. Years from now, when Alden Ehrenreich looks back on his Cocaine Bear experience, he’s not going to recall dancing with the title character first and foremost. He’s instead going to think of the two Cocaine Bear producers who surprised him during his first day on Elizabeth Banks’ rainy Ireland set. Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. “What I’m trying to find in the middle of my Venn diagram is authenticity, story and visual content and trying to serve all aspects of that for the design for the film, and try to find that sweet spot,” Beech declares about the tightrope between artifice and authenticity.

“Rarely as production designers do you get a chance to work on something that you feel like you have a grasp on the visuals of it,” admits Oscar-nominated production designer Jess Gonchor (“True Grit,” “Hail, Caesar!”) about designing the genre-bending comedy/drama “White Noise.” For our recent webchat he adds, “we have to become experts in things in 12, 14 weeks that we have no right being an expert on. The ‘22/23 film awards cycle is so competitive that even below-the-line categories like Best Production Design are hard to call. Gold Derby’s projected slate of nominees has at least seven titles that would look like frontrunners in weaker years.

In first, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is positioned to repeat its predecessor’s victory and earn Hannah Beachler her second Oscar. “Babylon” is close behind. “White Noise” might be the quietest high-profile Oscar hopeful in the last decade: The Netflix film from Noah Baumbach, a two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter whose last film was nominated for best picture, boasts a cast that includes Adam Driver and a 89 score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, buzz is strangely muted for the first film ever to serve as the opening night movie of the Venice and New York Film Festivals. But why?

“Unfilmable” source material

That likely begins with the source material. Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s whimsical novel revolves around Jack Gladney (Driver), a professor of Hitler studies at the College-on-the-Hill. He lives with his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) and their four children, but when an “Airborne Toxic Event” takes place in their community, the family must grapple with the universal mysteries of love and death.

Alden Ehrenreich is the latest addition to the upcoming Marvel series “Ironheart” at Disney+, Variety has confirmed with sources.

Ehrenreich joins previously announced cast members Dominique Thorne, Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, and Manny Montana. The show follows Marvel character Riri Williams (Thorne), a genius inventor and the creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. Details on the character Ehrenreich will play are being kept under wraps.

Reps for Marvel Studios and Ehrenreich did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ehrenreich is no stranger to working under the Disney umbrella, with the actor taking on the role of a young Han Solo in the standalone film “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” He most recently starred in the Peacock series adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World.” His other credits include films like “Rules Don’t Apply,” “Hail, Caesar!,” and “Blue Jasmine.”

Channing Tatum has a new movie in theaters. That in itself is something of an event, given that the last time the “Magic Mike” stripper extraordinaire starred in a somewhat prominent movie was “Logan Lucky” in 2017, which came one year after the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” For the most part, Tatum has been fairly quiet, doing only a handful of voiceover work and taking on some bit parts.
