After a night of drinking in Maxim's with his friend and colleague Mongicourt, Dr. Lucien Petypon wakes up under his canapé and finds a dancing girl called Garnaaltje in his bed.

Generaal Baron Petypon du Grêlé comes over to invite his nephew Lucien and his wife to attend the marriage of his niece in Touraine. Unfortunately he mistakes Garnaaltje for Petypon's wife and thinks the actual Mlle. Petypon is married to Dr. Mongicourt.

Garnaaltje, posing as Mlle Petypon, is the life of the party in Touraine, where all the guests mistake her uneducated and crass behavior for Paris chic.

Garnaaltje is putting the moves on Jean-Pierre, the rich Duchess's son, while Gabriëlle Petypon finally arrives, under the impression that she is to be ceremony leader of the entire affair. When she is introduced to Garnaaltje, she assumes this other 'Mrs Petypon' must be the General's wife.

Duke Jean-Pierre visits Paris looking for Garnaaltje, but ends up meeting the actual Mlle Petypon instead. The General has stopped Garnaaltje from eloping with Lt. Corrignon and returns her to her 'husband' Lucien.

Slowly but surely the General finds out who is married to whom in his nephew's household. Meanwhile, Lucien himself is still set to duel Lt. Maronier whether he wants to or not.
