"Hollywood has developed countless ways to make car chases feel more real and visceral to audiences." This easy-to-watch video essay takes a quick 10-minute look back at a handful of the most unforgettable car chases in movie history. We missed this video when it first dropped on YouTube back in 2021 - it was made as promotion for Fast and Furious 9 aka just F9 which opened in 2021 - but it's still fun to watch anytime. The video covers iconic car chase scenes from Bullitt (1968), The French Connection (1971), Vanishing Point (1971), Ronin (1998), Drive (2011), Black Panther (2018), Extraction (2020), Ford v Ferrari (2019) + a few others. Insider's How Car Chase Scenes Have Evolved Over 100 Years begins with the iconic Buster Keaton chase in 1924's Sherlock Jr. (followed up by his classic The General). While this isn't the most in-depth or extensive cinema history video essay, it will get you excited to watch more of these movies.

From three-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois, the creative visionary behind DreamWorks Animation's acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, comes the long-awaited live-action reimagining of the film that launched that now-iconic franchise.
Following several leaks (both of the camera phone and HD variety), Universal Pictures has finally released the official teaser trailer and poster (via Toonado.com) for this gorgeous new take on the 2010 animated classic.
Neither shows off too much but both sneak peeks make it clear that Toothless will look almost exactly like he did in the previous How to Train Your Dragon movies. Every studio on the planet learned from Paramount's mistake with Sonic the Hedgehog, so this is the right move even if he doesn't look as "realistic" as House of the Dragon's far scarier beasts.

The Substance, the Cannes Film Festival winning, Demi Moore body swap horror movie, is poised to bust to great heights at the global box office with a $70M-$75M take.
That’s quite a landmark for the Working Title produced-2 hour and 21-minute running, French shot movie which has the Ghost and $2.5 billion global grossing blockbuster actress in the awards season conversation for her portrayal of an aerobics instructor TV star, Elizabeth, who soon realizes her days are over in Hollywood. However, she gets the opportunity to participate in a body swap experiment which introduces the world, and her former TV audience, to much younger version of herself, under the new alias Sue (Margaret Qualley). Consequences, as unsexy as they are, ensue. The movie received a 13-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere back in May and won Best Screenplay for its filmmaker Coralie Fargeat. However, Wang was more than just a sculptor of latex and foam rubber. He got into directing professionally starting with 1991’s The Guyver. He also directed it’s sequel Guyver: Dark Hero and even a buddy cop style action film called Drive in 1997. Prior to these direct to video films, Wang also produced, directed and starred in a passion project called Kung-Fu Rascals. The classic has been released in a beautiful Collector’s Edition blu-ray set by Visual Vengeance and Wild Eye Releasing. Earlier this year I reviewed Budget Biomorphs: The Making of The Guyver Films by Dom O’Brien for PopGeeks. The film really acts as an in-depth exploration of the filmmaking of career of Steve Wang. That book detailed the production of Kung-Fu Rascals. Most of that crew ended up making The Guyver films a few years later. So, I jumped at the chance to take a look...

Tom Hanks’ journey to Hollywood stardom is full of memorable moments, but one of his early, defining breakthroughs came thanks to an unexpected encounter on the beloved sitcom Happy Days. In 1982, Hanks guest-starred on the show as Dr. Dwayne Twitchell, a karate expert with a grudge against Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, portrayed by Henry Winkler. In a pivotal scene, Hanks’ character shockingly kicked Fonzie through the stained-glass window of Al’s Drive-in, a moment that Hanks later credited as instrumental in launching his career as a leading man.

In the Happy Days episode titled A Little Case of Revenge, Hanks portrayed Dr. Twitchell, a former schoolmate of Fonzie’s who had harbored resentment since grade school. Seeking revenge, Twitchell confronts Fonzie in full karate attire, and in a memorable twist, kicks the iconic character through a stained-glass window.

Netflix has officially announced the return of the Emmy Award-winning anthology series “Beef,” ending months of speculation. On Tuesday, the streamer revealed Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny will star in the next series from creator and three-time Emmy Award winner Lee Sung Jin.
Season 2 of the show will focus on a young couple (Melton and Spaeny) who witness an “alarming fight between their boss and his wife (Isaac and Mulligan), triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.”
Original “Beef” stars and Emmy winners Steven Yeun and Ali Wong return as executive producers, along with Emmy winner Jake Schreier. The second season will run for eight episodes.
The first season of “Beef” debuted in April 2023 and became an immediate critical sensation for Netflix, eventually dominating the movie/limited series categories at the Emmy Awards.

One of the year’s most anticipated and epic musical scores won’t be in the running for an Academy Award.
Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, was met with critical acclaim when it hit theaters in March. Both critics and audiences lauded the film’s visuals, storytelling, and, most notably, the music score by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer. However, Zimmer’s powerful and evocative score for the sci-fi epic is not eligible to be submitted for this year’s Oscars due to surpassing the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music; therefore, it cannot be nominated in the best original score category.
The Academy’s rule states: “In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.” Since Zimmer’s composition for “Dune: Part Two” incorporates substantial...

While there aren’t any movies quite like Coralie Fergeat’s “The Substance,” there are plenty of over-the-top horror films about transformation, incredibly weird science, shared identities and losing your damn mind, like the 1981 cult movie “Possession,” pretty much every David Cronenberg movie, as well as offerings from Ken Russell, Peter Strickland, Julia Ducournau and Ari Aster.
Expect screaming, exploding heads, lots of blood and some of the most insane endings ever.
Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill in “Possession” (Credit: Gaumont) Possession (1981)
Isabelle Adjani has the mother of all freakouts in a subway in this role that earned her a César for Best Actress (the French equivalent of the Oscars) and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Fest that year, but that’s not even the most mind-blowing part of the movie form Polish director Andrzej Żuławski. She’s also cheating on her husband (Sam Neill) with something that isn’t really human.

When thinking of Yoshihiro Togashi, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the legendary manga creator hunched over his desk, constantly working on the next chapter of Hunter x Hunter, or maybe, more accurately, taking another one of his infamous hiatuses. But there’s more to Togashi than just his irregular work schedule, in fact, his married life is probably one of the most fascinating aspects of his life.

Yoshihiro Togashi is married to another iconic mangaka, Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon manga. And Togashi’s relationship with Takeuchi may very well be the reason why he can never stop writing Hunter x Hunter, no matter how much his back hurts, or how many video game releases he wants to binge-play.
How Yoshihiro Togashi and Naoko Takeuchi Crossed Paths
The story of how Yoshihiro Togashi met Naoko Takeuchi isn’t a typical romantic story.

Saoirse Ronan has been leaving audiences speechless since she was very young. From getting nominated for an Oscar when she was 13 years old to starring as the lead in several other Oscar-winning and nominated films, there is no denying that she has a very respected image in the film industry. One of the first films that put her name out there was 2009’s The Lovely Bones.

Animator Henry Thurlow who is popular for his work on One Piece, Boruto and other anime, recently put out a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) shedding light on what possibly could have gone wrong with the Uzumaki adaptation.
The anime has gone through an alarming downward spiral when it came to its animation quality, leaving everyone quite disheartened.
While Thurlow admitted that he was not fully aware of what happened behind the scenes of Uzumaki’s production, he lashed out at western producers for probably having ruined the show.
He pointed out that some producer from the anime, in a bid to just get done with production and release it, might have involved some subpar studio to work on the it.

Rumours began circulating earlier this month that Josh Brolin was in talks to star in HBO’s upcoming Green Lantern TV series. It later emerged that he had turned down the role, with Warner Bros. now in talks with Kyle Chandler to wield the power ring. While speaking with ComicBook.com, Brolin confirmed he had been in talks to star in Lanterns, but it didn’t work out.
“You know what? Green Lantern didn’t work out, but that’s okay,” Brolin said. “It’s working out. Who is it going to be, Kyle Chandler? I love him as an actor, I think he’s wonderful, actually. And, you know, we’ll see what’s down the line, man.” That last line does seem to hint that he would be open to another DC role. Following a killer performance during the Olympics closing ceremony, Phoenix have jumped on a new remix of Kavinsky’s track “Nightcall” with Belgian vocalist Angèle. Stream it below.
Originally written by Kavinsky and Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, “Nightcall” was first released in 2010 and featured in the title sequence for the Ryan Gosling film Drive. During the closing ceremony in Paris, Phoenix debuted the reimagined version with Belgian star Angèle, which they’ve now officially recorded and released to streaming.
Capitalizing on the intensity and moodiness of the original song, Phoenix member Thomas Mars’ vocals interweave with those of Angèle in and out of the chorus to haunting effect. When it comes to creating unforgettable television characters, Breaking Bad stands out as a true masterpiece. From its complex storytelling to its brilliant character arcs, the series has been hailed as one of the greatest ever to be created. Part of the reason why is Bryan Cranston’s Breaking Bad character, no matter how terrifying Walter White might become, you can’t help but feel sorry for him.

Ryan Gosling almost suited up as a superhero, and the story behind it is wild! Before joining the Barbie world or serenading us in La La Land, Gosling was eyeing a different kind of role—a superhero flick that once had the Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, attached. Yeah, imagine Gosling trading in his smooth, brooding charm for some crime-fighting action.

Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is hoping to shoot a new film in Tokyo next year – and it seems it won’t be quite as family-friendly as his Famous Five adaptation.
Venice Film Festival is in full swing, and it seems that the entirety of Hollywood has landed in Italy.
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn is at the Lido too with his short film Beauty Is Not A Sin, but the filmmaker also told Variety that he’s planning his return to feature filmmaking, something we reported on back in February. Winding Refn swore off Hollywood years ago and hasn’t made a feature since 2016’s The Neon Demon.
Variety details that Winding Refn is planning to shoot his new, still-untitled film in Tokyo, which will be in both English and Japanese. Winding Refn also described his return to feature filmmaking as an act of “defiance”.

Bryan Cranston is simply a monumental artist, with unbelievable acting chops. He can play a lovable and goofy Hal in Malcolm in the Middle, and the cold, calculating Walter White in Breaking Bad. Nicolas Winding Refn, is one of the few directors who deserves the enfant terrible label. The Danish filmmaker, best-known for his neon-drenched tales of sex, violence and revenge — Drive, Only God Forgives, The Neon Demon — is at the Venice Film Festival this year with two works that, he says, represents both his “classic past and the future”: A restored version of his 1996 debut Pusher and Beauty Is Not a Sin, a seven-minute commercial for Italian motorcycle company Mv Agusta. “Whoever said a movie can’t be seven minutes long?” is its irreverent, Refn-esque tagline.
In recent years, Refn has pivoted from cinema towards streaming, bringing his acid Day-Glo aesthetic and digressive narrative style — he typically shoots in sequence, not knowing how his stories will end — to series like Too Old to Die Young for Amazon and Copenhagen Cowboy for Netflix. He also, surprisingly, reimagined Enid Blyton’s beloved kids...

Incubus kicked off their 2024 “Morning View + the Hits Tour” in Detroit, Michigan over the weekend, where they played their 2001 album Morning View in full. The tour comes on the heels of Morning View Xxiii, a re-recorded version of the album that arrived back in May.
Incubus intended to have their 20th anniversary Morning View celebration in 2021, but the pandemic had other plans — instead of the full-fledged tour they’ve now finally embarked on, Incubus held a special livestreamed performance at the house that Morning View was recorded at in October 2021.

In a world… in which movies are just as much products as they are art, studios need to sell the latest releases to the broadest possible audiences. That means that they not only need to craft trailers promoting the films, but they need to misrepresent what films are really about.
On a certain level, that tendency toward misrepresentation makes sense. Trailers only have a couple of minutes to get people interested in the film, and complex works of art don’t lend themselves to such simplicities.
That said, it’s hard to see a masterpiece reduced to just a few sizzle moments, trying their best to ensure that the audience won’t be surprised or challenged by what they’re about to see. Here are some of the worst offenders in cinema history, movies that ended up to be so much more than what these teasers promised.

Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars, who performed at Sunday’s concert at the Stade de France for the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, said that he worried for athletes’ safety during the show.
French indie rock band Phoenix delivered a rousing rendition of their hit “Lisztomania” surrounded by hundreds of athletes.
While Mars is accustomed to live performances, the Olympics’ closing ceremony was a different kind of gig, he told French radio France Inter on Monday morning, due to the overjoyed crowd of athletes who were out of control during the musical act.
“We were told that generally at closing ceremonies, the athletes are very happy with the pressure from the Olympics coming down so they let loose,” said Mars. “But there, they got up on screens, they broke the screens,” he said. “In fact, we were afraid for them because we had been told for the last two weeks of rehearsal ‘Above all,...

Frank Herbert's "Dune" has a longer timeline than one might expect. The first book takes place in the year 10,191 A.G., referring to a time after the inception of the Spacing Guild, the organization devoted to faster-than-light travel. Later sequels refer to the year 11,200 B.G. as the year humans first developed space travel, lining it up with A.D. 1960. "Dune," then, takes place about 20,000 years in the future.
"Star Trek," in contrast, takes place in the relatively near future. The original series takes place in the 23rd century, and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- and its immediate spinoffs "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Star Trek" Voyager," and "Star Trek: Lower Decks" -- all take place in the 24th century. Extending the timeline, "Picard" takes place in the early 25th century, and the bulk of "Discovery" takes place in 32nd century, thanks to a time warp. Comparatively, those...

The Paris Olympics closing ceremony was full of surprises Sunday and featured performances by Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, H.E.R and Phoenix.
Phoenix, originally from France but now based in the U.S., kicked off the show with their 2009 hit “Lisztomania,” as athletes danced and sang along to the indie classic. Their set featured surprise appearances from French synthwave artist Kavinsky and Belgian singer Angèle for a rendition of “Nightcall,” known from the Drive soundtrack (the original version featured Css singer Lovefoxxx instead of Angèle).
Rapper VannDa joined in for “Funky Squaredance” and fellow French indie icons Air performed their song “Playground Love” with Phoenix. Another surprise was Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig, who performed “Tonight,” his collaborative track with the band. The set ended on a sweet note with frontman Thomas Mars jumping off the stage to mingle with the Olympians in the crowd.
