Episode 1.1

The first episode of Russell T Davies's Queer as Folk has an arrogant swagger and an energetic vibe.

Channel 4 knew they were going to get flak from the press for explicit talk about gay sex and one of the characters was a gay schoolboy.

Set in the Canal Street area of Manchester it focuses on three characters. Stuart is the alpha male, he always pulls a bloke. Vince is an old friend who ends up driving for Stuart in these nights out so Stuart gets to drink and Vince stays sober. Vince is less confident and has not had sex for six months. In the first episode he is pursued by what seems like a muscular man and but Vince is less interested. Vince ends up watching an episode of Doctor Who on video.

The opening scenes are very much the viewpoint of Nathan, the 15 year old who has summoned the courage to attend the gay club scene at night for the first time. He immediately catches the attention of Stuart.

However Stuart's night is interrupted as he agreed to be a sperm doner for a lesbian couple, who has just given birth.

Queer as Folk is never going to be a series for everybody. It certainly is not embarrassed about its subject matter as evident in the first episode. It simply is about what it felt like to grow up as a gay man according to Davies. He felt all gay men were in some ways any of the main three characters at some stage in their lives.
