When talking about horror scream queens, few names rank higher on the list of the greatest than Linnea Quigley. So when word got out that a Quigley film that was shot over a decade ago is premiering in September, we had to check it out.

Fittingly entitled Scream Queen, the film stars Quigley and was written and directed by Brad Sykes. It will be premiering on September 15, 2012, at the Syracuse Horror and More Film Festival, part of the Scare-a-Cuse Horror and Sci-Fi Fan Convention in Verona, NY. The film will also be receiving an extras-packed DVD release from Leo Films later this year.

Hey La Gorehounds, we've got a treat for you! Cult horror filmmaker Brad Sykes will be bringing his film, Plaguers, to the NoHoArts Theater in North Hollywood on April 28. Hey, La, with Kobe on the shelf what else are you going to do on a Saturday night?

The screening of Plaguers will be held at the NoHo Arts Theater in Northern Hollywood, 5101 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91601 on April 28 at 8pm. Sykes (creator of Camp Blood, Death Factory and Goth) will host a Q&A session after the screening with cast and crew, DVD signings, giveaways, and more! And all for only $5 at the door.

Admittedly, this reviewer has talked to Kantz on several occasions and his passion for filmmaking often comes through in the topics he likes to talk about. This reviewer loves to talk of film too. That is what makes reviewing Wasteland so much harder. This sci-fi title came out of DVD October 11th and the screener came not much later than that. This is a post-apocalyptic yarn involving revenge as one man, named Keo (Garret Sato), sets out to kill members of the Church, the people who assaulted his wife and kidnapped his only son. This is a pretty straight forward homage to Albert Pyun's 1989 flick Cyborg, with costumes, action and plot line eerily similar. This latest incarnation had a much smaller budget, cast and the audio is almost entirely dubbed to the film's detriment.

Tom Sizemore and Paige La Pierre are entwined in the hunt for a serial killer in C.L.A.S.S. now shooting in Los Angeles. La Pierre starred in Neighborhood Watch and Plaguers . Here she plays a law student who takes Sizemore's criminology class. Both are soon on the hunt for a serial killer that has targeted their town. Naturally, there's something suspect about Sizemore's character... In the director's chair is Michael Phillip Edwards working from a script by Sheldon Robins. Dante Basco also stars alongside Sam Daly, Jasmine Waltz, Jamison Haase and Randy Irwin. On just about every Friday night, when I was a kid, back in the days before Netflix (or illegal BitTorrents for all you criminals out there, you know who you are), my parents used to take me to the video store (this being their idea of active recreation, far be it from me to complain). No sooner would we get through the entrance way before I found myself in the horror and sci-fi/fantasy sections, face-to-face with a slew of low budget titles, never advertised on television, performed by actors who seldom (if ever) broke into major motion pictures, and helmed by directors who proved, time and time again, that creativity cannot be bought, but rather cultivated, with ambition and a fervent imagination.

In my formidable youth, sold on the elaborate (if at times cheesy) cover art these features put forth, I’ve managed to tantrum my way into watching...

Plaguers was recently released on DVD through Image Entertainment and the film successfully blends other science-fiction films into one, but what else does Plaguers accomplish? The answer is not much. Yes, the camera and lights stay on during the production, while the sound department figures out that dubbing is a poor option, yet, Plaguers is best described as "just a hodge podge of stuff we've all seen before" (DigitallyObsessed).

The bare bones plot follows the spaceship Pandora and a small crew, who encounter several stranded space stewardesses on a derelict craft (no, seriously). These purple out-fitted sirens of the future attempt to hijack Pandora and in the ensuing chaos a power supply, known as Thanatos, breaks open killing or infecting one of the stewardesses. Now there are zombies in space, which basically sums up Brad Sykes' plot.

Plaguers (Image) is a hodgepodge homage (a.k.a. ripoff) of Alien, a George Romero Dead film and a ’80s Sf-horror B-movie that Roger Corman would’ve produced back in the day. The low-budget flick takes place in the 23rd century. The spaceship Pandora is headed to Earth, and it’s carrying a mysterious green-glowing energy source that they refer to as “Thanatos.” The craft has a small crew, and I would name them if that were important, but it isn’t. The only crewmembers who aren’t interchangeable or forgettable are Captain Holloway (Alexis Zibolis) and Tarver (Steve Railsback). Actually, Holloway is rather forgettable as well—she just gets more screen time—and Railsback plays a synthoid (a.k.a. an android) in a lifeless performance in which the Helter Skelter actor goes way too far in the “I’m a robot. I have no emotions” department. Oh, there’s also the former captain,...

A new poster is available for the Plaguers, which is a Brad Sykes film. Plaguers has been released as of December 8th on DVD. Image Entertainment is releasing the film and despite some early poor reviews those who like a blend of sci-fi with horror might find some value in this low budget feature. Without a doubt, the biggest release of the week is the Ak 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa boxed set coming from The Criterion Collection. The 25 disc set (amazon) has been put together for the occasion of the centenary of his birth and is the largest Kurosawa collection ever assembled. It includes most films spanning his 50 year career (1943 to 1993). At $400 retail however, I'll probably have to settle for revisiting my 3-disc Seven Samurai set for now.

Another big release this week is Home Movie (amazon), Christopher Denham's horror festival favorite. It garnered some amazing reviews when it played well over a year ago, including a 10/10 by our own Rick Mcgrath, so it's gotta be good.

Another long awaited release is Tkashi Miike's cult shocker, Gozu (amazon), which is getting a 2-Disc Collector's Edition.

Fright filmmaker Brad Sykes gave Fango the first word that his latest feature Plaguers has been acquired for distribution by Image Entertainment. He also passed on an early look at the cover-art design for the DVD, which he reveals will be fully loaded.

Set to debut December 15, the Plaguers disc will present the movie in 1.85:1 widescreen with Dolby 5.1 sound. Special features include an audio commentary by writer/director Sykes, producer Josephina Sykes and star Steve Railsback, and the 35-minute “Scares in Space” featurette, with contains on-set footage, cast/crew interviews and more. “I knew we’d be in good hands with Image, a distributor with a long history of releasing so many great genre titles, from classics like Assault On Precinct 13 to Stuart Gordon’s recent Stuck,” Sykes tells us. “It has been great working with them on the DVD, and we’re putting together a very cool package.

I spent so many nights tied to the tv screen watching anything that remotely looked like it could be as good as Ridley Scott's Alien back in 80s that I still have a fondness for low-budget space station horrors to this day. I mean, films like Xtro, Forbidden World, Deep Star Six or even Roger Corman's Galaxy of Terror were fun right? Right?!

Which brings us to Plaguers, a new scifi horror film that wants to be Alien but comes off feeling like another in a long line of Alien "homages." And of course, I completely respect that. Plaguers made its debut at last year's Afm and is being brought to us by Spotlight-Pictures who also brought us the apocalyptic Autumn. However, I don't remember a trailer ever popping up so I thought I'd throw it out there and see what everyone thought.

One interesting side effect of the meltdown on Wall Street is that part of the "sweetening" of the bailout bill authored by the Senate during the week of September 27-October 3, 2008, included a tax break aimed at film and TV production companies. They received an increase in the single-year deduction in production costs, from $15 million to $20 million, that they may take if the costs are incurred in economically depressed areas. In an effort to keep film and TV productions in the U.S., it also allows more companies to use a domestic production deduction.

Considering the state of the economy, it probably won't be too hard to qualify as a "depressed area" so it's likely that more independent productions will be able to remain here in the States instead of trekking up to Canada or over to Romania, which bodes well for the horror genre. At least that's how it seems on the surface,...

Brad Sykes, writer/director of the upcoming sci-fi/horror mash-up Plaguers, dropped us a line this morning with a heads-up as to when and where potential fans will be able to check out his ambitious new film as well as an exclusive look behind the scenes!

Plaguers will open Shockerfest this Friday, October 3rd, at midnight. Shockerfest is going down in Riverbank, CA, and Plaguers has been nominated for Best Sci-Fi Feature, Best Actor and Best Actress. Not too shabby!

The film will also be unspooling at 11:45Am this Sunday, October 5th, at the Mid Ohio Con, which takes place in Columbus, Oh. Mid Ohio Con has already awarded Plaguers Best Sci-Fi Feature. Congrats!

Sykes also granted us a look at the first two minutes of the featurette “Scares in Space: The Making of Plaguers”, which we’ve chosen to share with you guys below cause you’re so damn cool.

Director Brad Sykes dropped us a line this week with the good news that his latest film, the Steve Railsback-starrer Plaguers, was a rousing success during its premiere at Spain’s recent Estepona Fantasy & Horror Film Festival, taking home a Silver Unicorn Award for Best Screenplay.

Very cool news indeed! So when will those of us in the U.S. get to see it? ”Plaguers has been selected as the Opening Night film for Shockerfest in Modesto, CA,” Sykes told us. ”It will screen at midnight on Oct. 3, 2008. This will be the film’s North American premiere, and I’ll be in attendance along with producer Josephina Syke. Start Halloween early this year and be the first to catch Plaguers on the West CD=oast!”

So here it is already Labor Day Weekend, 2008. Man, it seems like just a few days ago I was peeling July off the calendar as we entered the month of August. But no, it really is time for the August 23-29, 2008, Weekly Wrap-Up. And while Labor Day may have started out as a way to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" (according to Wikipedia), I'm going along with the modern interpretation of it as a day of rest for working stiffs and putting out a slightly abbreviated version of the Wrap-Up so I can get a jump on the relaxation part of the holiday. Stay safe, everybody, and enjoy whatever festivities you plan to engage in!

Conventional wisdom holds that movie titles should be clean, clear, and to the point. Most people would probably agree that worrying about punctuation shouldn't factor into the equation.
