Theres always that strange transition period in horror movies where things can get lost in the shuffle. The 70s and its nihilism broke late in the decade to swerve into masked killers and the slasher genre. That heyday was far shorter than people remember but the late 80s did something similar in transitioning to straight to video smash successes and a crazy number of sequels and adaptations. That well, too, would dry up, and when Wes Craven released Scream in 1996, the landscape would shift to smart slashers and then found footage. Valve’s seminal classic Fps Half-Life 2 is now 20 years old. And to celebrate, much like what Valve did with the original Half-Life for its 25th anniversary, they’ve not only released a brand-new two-hour documentary on the making of the game, but also have made the original Half-Life 2, along with the Episode One and Episode Two expansions, available to grab for free on Steam until November 18 at 10am Pt.
The documentary created by the Secret Tape team (who also did the Half-Life documentary) delves into several topics, such as how Valve handled running out of money during Half-Life 2‘s development, the infamous hack that resulted in an early build of the game being leaked to the internet, the eventual creation of the Steam storefront and more.
Meanwhile, existing owners can also enjoy a new update to the original game that adds additional content such as commentary by the original team to the game,...

Alan Scarfe, the classically trained British Canadian actor known for his turns as bad guys in Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III and as Dr. Bradley Talmadge on the Upn sci-fi series Seven Days, has died. He was 77.
Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.
Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).
Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.
“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re looking at the trademark style and calling signs of James Cameron as director.
In college, James Cameron decided that he wanted to be a screenwriter. He switched from majoring in Physics to majoring in English, before eventually deciding to drop out and raise money to start his career. During that time, he worked many odd jobs, until he was finally inspired by Star Wars in 1977 to start his career in the film industry. In the early 1980’s he first worked as a miniature model builder at Roger Corman studios, demonstrating a talent for creating innovative special effects. Over time, he became a production designer, and special effects director. In 1981, he was a special effects director for the film Piranha II: The Spawning. What do famous directors do when crafting groundbreaking cinematic adventures becomes a mundane chore? They build their own pressure-resistant submersible, sail around the ocean for a few weeks, and dive deeper than any man has ever attempted to plunge alone. Yes, James Cameron is a modern-day Scrooge McDuck, spending limitless amounts of money just so he can carry out an underwater adventure while all of us watch, becoming this zany character who doesn’t even seem fit for reality. With 32 movies in only fourteen years, Marvel built an empire unlike anything previously seen in Hollywood. By taking things in-house, they set the bar higher than ever for superhero films and proved that the concept of a mega-franchise was not only viable, but extremely profitable. In 2009, they joined forces with Disney’s empire in order to grow their brand recognition even further and with their post-Avengers films, they’ve proven that things are only getting better. With all of this success, it would be impossible for other filmmakers and the owners of other franchises not to take notice. Today we’ll look at the ways in which Marvel is changing the way movies are made.
Movies are changing, and Marvel is at the helm. Join us for part 3 of a four part special event as we explore where Marvel came from, how they rose to silver screen prominence, how they’ve changed filmmaking,...

Earlier this spring, the complete run of "Hill Street Blues" was released on DVD, and it was remarkable to see just how well the groundbreaking cop drama held up three decades later. Some elements of it felt dated, but on the whole, you could find common DNA with many of this century's best dramas. That's because for a long stretch in the '80s and '90s, "Hill Street" co-creator Steven Bochco was way out ahead of the curve, experimenting with what was and wasn't possible within the confines of a broadcast network drama, and in the process paving the way for this cable golden age in which we live. "Hill Street" popularized multi-layered, morally complex serialized storytelling in primetime. "NYPD Blue" broke down the barriers between network and cable with its raw language, sexuality and criminal subject matter, and the popularity of Andy Sipowicz (who would've been a villain...

It took a few years in a career filled with guest roles and failed series (including "Raising the Bar" and "The Defenders"), but Teddy Sears is finally on a hit show. As the actor told us during our recent webcam chat, "I would like to think it's going to be a nice long career if I could draft it up, just sort of stick around, and one of these jobs is going to be one that will be the brass ring. Kerry's show "Scandal" also won Outstanding Drama Series.
In addition, the hilarious Kevin Hart took home Entertainer of the Year, while Oprah Winfrey paid tribute to the late Nelson Mandela with a touching speech and musical dedication.

Sylvester Stallone teases new names for The Expendables 3, and has The Raid firmly in his sights...
The big surprise so far where The Expendables 3 is concerned is the man who Sylvester Stallone has recruited to direct it. Patrick Hughes has the low budget feature Red Hill to his name, and he's been hand-picked by Stallone to bring fresh life into The Expendables franchise.
Stallone is working on the screenplay, and he'll be starring in the film of course. And he's taken to his Twitter feed to tease some of the faces who'll be joining him.
Firstly, Stallone confirmed that Mickey Rourke is back for this one. He also revealed that he's been talking about Wesley Snipes, saying "he can not Wait to fight to the top again" (which we think means he's probably in). Then he added "Antonio B....? Could be", and "What's the plan?...

Sylvester Stallone took to his Twitter account recently and offered a bunch of updates on The Expendables 3. He confirms some casting and reveals where they are looking for inspiration. I think you're going to like what he has to say.
Here are the tweets he sent out:
Scouting eastern Europe and Asia ...we are going all out on this one ... Could be a big surprise!!
What's the plan? Ask Jackie Chan....
Thinking about Raiding, The Raid....think about it...
We believe we can do better than the Raid, which was an excellent film... Raising the bar...
Mighty Mickey is back............
Talked to Wesley today ... He can not Wait to fight to the top again !!!!!!! Over...
So he's confirmed Jackie Chan, Mickey Rourke, and Wesley Snipes will be in the movie. The most interesting part of this to me though is that he thinks they can do a better action film than The Raid.

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

Burn, baby burn! We’re receiving more and more reports as the police-centric proposed Chicago Fire spin-off gains momentum. Showmakers are adding fuel to the fire with some hot young faces. The two new actors join Scott Eastwood and Tania Raymonde, who we reported just yesterday were circling the new drama.
