Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, Lawrence has confirmed to the folks at Collider that post-production work on the film is almost complete, and he’s “super happy” with it.

The Long Walk has been one of Stephen King’s novels that has been tough to bring to the screen. It looks like that’s about to change, though. Francis Lawrence, the director of I Am Legend, is behind the upcoming film adaptation, which is currently in post-production.

Lawrence is also working on the film’s score in London. He’s expressed excitement about how the film is coming together, calling it “really unique.”

Lawrence has been a fan of The Long Walk for years and even tried to make it happen a while ago. After finishing I Am Legend, he wanted to adapt the novel, but Frank Darabont ended up securing the rights.

Despite various attempts over the years, no one had been able to make it work—until now. Lawrence teamed up with writer Jt Mollner, who worked on Strange Darling, and they quickly came up with a draft that worked.

Lionsgate has released its third quarter financial results after the spinoff of the media giant’s studio business into a separately traded stock.

The studio, led by CEO Jon Feltheimer, posted a sharply narrowed net loss attributable to shareholders at $21.9 million, compared to a year-earlier loss at $107.4 million when Lionsgate at the time reported on the impact of the earlier Hollywood writers and actors strikes on its content production and release pipeline.

During the latest quarter to Dec. 31, 2024, overall revenue fell to $970.5 million, against $975.1 million in the same period of last year. That blew past an analyst estimate for $922 million in overall third quarter revenues by $48 million.

Lionsgate posted an adjusted earnings per-share at 28 cents, which surpassed the analyst estimate by 21 cents. And the studio’s adjusted Oibda came to $144.2 million, against a year-earlier $151 million, which well exceeded the Wall Street estimate for $104 million in adjusted Oibda.

David Jonsson will star in the lead role of Frank Ocean’s forthcoming directorial debut film, and has begun shooting the project in Mexico City. The independent film is currently untitled, and plot details remain under wraps.

The fast-rising British actor recently starred as the co-lead in Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Romulus” film alongside Cailee Spaeny, receiving rave reviews.

In 2024, he was named on both Variety’s 10 Actors To Watch and The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen Talent lists, and is nominated at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards for the Rising Star Award, voted on by the public. He previously starred in “Rye Lane” for Searchlight Pictures, written and directed by Raine Allen Miller. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Outstanding British Film at the BAFTA Film Awards.

Jonsson will next star in “Wasteman” alongside Tom Blyth and in Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” opposite Cooper Hoffman for Lionsgate.

During a recent appearance on The Kingcast, Stephen King praised Mike Flanagan‘s take on his magnum opus, The Dark Tower.

“I’ve seen screenplays and pitches, and he starts where he should start,” the author says. “The beats are perfect. They’re just perfect.”

King lovingly refers to Flanagan — who previously adapted Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and the forthcoming The Life of Chuck — as “the King whisperer.” The filmmaker revealed in late 2022 that his Intrepid Pictures acquired the rights The Dark Tower.

Tangentially related to the Dark Tower saga, King is currently working on a third Talisman novel. He expressed his excitement to return to the parallel world he created with the late Peter Straub.

“I’ve been channeling [Straub] like a motherfucker while working on Talisman 3. I find myself using his verbs. People don’t necessarily walk into a room. They bustle into a room, because that’s a very Straub-ian word.

Stephen King has written about 65 books at this point, and by the time you finish reading this article, it'll probably be 66. Not all of them are winners, but he's batting at such a high average that it's hard to complain. The only problem is that it's a little intimidating for first-time readers to decide where to start with him. Stephen King has an upcoming book hitting shelves in 2025, Never Flinch, and it will hopefully embrace the balance he found in the best story that includes Holly Gibney. The author has had a busy few months. King's new book Never Flinch was announced in November, right on the heels of the anthology The End of the World As We Know It, set in the world of The Stand. Never Flinch is the next book after 2024's excellent You Like It Darker, a collection of short stories, showing King isn't slowing down any time soon.

Multiple TV and movie adaptations of King's projects are currently in the works, as well, including Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck and his Dark Tower TV adaptation, Oz Perkins' The Monkey, The Institute TV adaptation, Francis Lawrence's The Long Walk, and Edgar Wright's The Running Man. Clearly, there's no shortage of Stephen King content.

2024 was a big year for Stephen King, with new books, big plans announced for 2025, anniversaries, more adaptations of his works, and a lot more. The King of Horror has been terrorizing generations of readers for decades, with over sixty books and hundreds of short stories, either exploring fears in supernatural ways or in more grounded, realistic ways. King’s reign in the world of horror started in 1974 with the publishing of Carrie, though it wasn’t the first novel he wrote – that honor belongs to The Long Walk, published until 1979.

Since Carrie, King has been unstoppable and consistently publishing novels and collections with short stories, of which many have been adapted to TV and film, sometimes more than once. 2024 was no exception, and fans of the King of Horror were treated to not only new short stories and novels by King but also big news about some of the many upcoming adaptations of his works.

David Jonsson, the fast-rising British star of “Alien: Romulus,” “Rye Lane” and “Industry,” has joined Phoebe Arnstein’s short film “If You’re Happy” as executive producer.

Starring “The Crown” alumnus Erin Doherty (soon to be seen in Disney+ series “A Thousand Blows”), “If You’re Happy” follows Lotte (Doherty) as she navigates the daunting challenges and demands of early motherhood. Seeking connection, she attends a local baby group led by a bizarre teacher (Jo Hartley). Lotte is further displaced by the surreal environment and uses a childish game to vent her fury, sparking an unexpected, primal outpouring of emotions amongst the other mothers.

Hunger Games movie franchise director Francis Lawrence and his About:Blank Productions banner have signed a first-look production deal with Lionsgate.

With the Hunger Games series having generated nearly $3.7 billion in ticket sales worldwide for Lionsgate, Lawrence inked the producing deal with the major studio ahead of directing and producing The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the next film in the franchise.

The first look deal announcement was made by Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will go into production for Lionsgate in 2025, ahead of a planned worldwide release on Nov. 20, 2026.

Judy Greer, Sean Astin, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman have all signed on to star in the upcoming dark comedy feature Chili Finger, with first-timers Edd Benda and Stephen Helstad to co-direct. Helstad wrote the script and Goodman is an executive producer. Additional castmembers Sarah Herrman and Paul Stanko are currently attached, with production slated to begin next spring. The film is produced by Beyond the Porch and Gold Tree Studios.

Chili Finger tells the story of a recently empty-nested mother (Greer) who discovers a human finger in her bowl of fast-food chili. When she blackmails the restaurant for a cash payout, the situation spirals out of control and her life descends into chaos.

So far, Astin, Cranston and Goodman’s characters are being kept under wraps.

“We couldn’t ask for a better cast to bring our quirky dark comedy to the big screen,” said co-directors Benda and Helstad.

Some very exciting news for horror fans this evening, as Mike Flanagan is re-teaming with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie.

Deadline reports that the pair - who recently collaborated on the upcoming The Life of Chuck - are developing the supernatural coming-of-rage tale as an eight-episode series for Amazon, with Flanagan on board as showrunner and exec producer.

Brian De Palma's 1976 take on the book is widely viewed as one of the better King adaptations, with Sissy Spacek delivering a terrifying and tragic turn as the title character, who begins to manifest destructive telekinetic abilities after being relentlessly bullied by her classmates and tormented by her domineering religious fanatic mother. John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred.

The movie's climactic bloodbath is often hailed as one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

Sydney Sweeney is set to play legendary film star Kim Novak in Colman Domingo’s Sammy Davis Jr. biopic “Scandalous” at Miramax, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

The project marks the “Rustin” Oscar nominee’s directorial debut and co-stars David Jonsson as the iconic entertainer. Although plot details are being kept under wraps, the film centers on the scandalous and brief love affair between Novak and the Rat Packer, which took place in 1957. Matthew Fantaci wrote the script.

Principal photography on “Scandalous” will take place in Los Angeles after Sweeney and Domingo wrap the third season of HBO series “Euphoria.” Sweeney will produce the project along with Tani Cohen and Bobby Rock. Jon Levin is the executive producer.

Plan is to shoot the film — imagine a movie about classic Hollywood being shot in Los Angeles — when Domingo and Sweeney complete Season 3 of the HBO series Euphoria.

Exclusive: Judy Greer has boarded the comedy In Memoriam from former Late Show With David Letterman producer Rob Burnett.

Burnett, who also wrote the movie, commences production this week in Los Angeles. Pic follows a veteran Hollywood actor (Marc Maron) who, after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, becomes obsessed with securing a spot in the Academy Awards’ “In Memoriam” montage. This leads to a heartfelt exploration of ego, humility and legacy.

Greer will play Maron’s ex-wife. The 13 Going on 30 actress joins Talia Ryder in the feature. Invention Studios’ Nicholas Weinstock and Divya D’Souza are producing with Maron, as well as Burnett and David Martin from Avalon.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.

Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Stephen King calls out an upcoming horror movie as stellar. King is a prolific author within the horror genre, whose works have been developed into countless iconic films, including Carrie, The Shining, and It. Another King adaptation is coming soon with the Mike Flanagan-directed movie The Life of Chuck. One of King's more genre-bending works, The Life of Chuck has gotten great reviews thus far and won the coveted audience award at the Toronto Independent Film Festival earlier this month. In addition to this film, other King adaptations in the works include The Long Walk and The Running Man.

Variety has announced its 10 Actors to Watch for 2024, naming breakthrough and up-and-coming actors whose stars are on the rise. Over the years, the list has included more than 35 Oscar winners and nominees, including Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet and Brie Larson. The10 to Watch lists have been a Variety staple since 1997, with Actors to Watch highlighted since 1998, with many performers from awards season prospects.

While Stephen King is best known for his chilling horror novels and short stories, the author has actually ventured into several other genres across the years, and his non-horror books are surprisingly great. He may have made his name with supernatural scares like Carrie and The Shining, but his talents arent restricted to frightening the reader; many of his less terrifying reads are among Stephen Kings best books ever, largely because of their emotional weight, rich fantasy, or complex worldbuilding.

King has written plenty of non-horror novellas and short stories throughout his career, but its the full-length books that are the most interesting. For an author so deeply entrenched in a single genre, releasing an entire book that tackles completely different issues and new structures is extremely impressive. In fact, some of the best Stephen King movie adaptations come from his non-horror works, proving just how versatile he is as a storyteller.

The short stories and novels of Stephen King continue to inspire countless artists and are still a great source for filmmakers. Various adaptations of Kings works are constantly in development, and many of them have gone through many obstacles that have delayed the projects. Such is the case for The Long Walk, which had a complicated pre-production process.

The majority of Stephen King's novels (and many of his short stories) have been adapted into films or TV projects over the years, but there a few outliers that have yet to make the leap from page to screen. While it seems inevitable that sooner or later, every King work (with one notable exception) will be adapted, you have to wonder why some books have yet to materialize as movies. In 2016, King was asked by Deadline if there were any books he was surprised hadn't been adapted yet, and he had an answer: "The Regulators." If you came of age in the 1990s, as I did, and were a Stephen King nerd, as I was (and still am), you know all about "The Regulators," because it wasn't a normal Stephen King release. In fact, it technically wasn't even a Stephen King book — it was attributed to King's pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
