Norah O’Donnell’s debut as anchor of CBS Evening News drew 5.61 million total viewers Monday, on par with the newscast’s numbers in the recently ended second quarter and year-over-year but lower in viewers and the key news demo compared with this season’s averages.
The broadcast, featuring a sit-down with Amazon’s Jeff Bezos about his space ambitions and reporting on the backlash over President Donald Trump’s controversial tweets, attracted 929,000 viewers in the key 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen. That was down 24% from a year ago and 22% compared with the 2019 year-to-date average.
While up 2% in viewers from the non-debut week before, Monday’s viewership was off 6% compared with the 2019 average.
Monday’s numbers hewed more closely to the broadcast’s averages for the just-ended second quarter: 5.47M viewers and 1.047M in the news demo.
Year to date, CBS Evening News averages 5.96 million total viewers and 1.18M demo viewers.

Though Norah O’Donnell had her first turn as anchor of “CBS Evening News” Monday night, she didn’t rely on any attention-grabbing tricks to carry the day. There was no flashy drawing board, no rattling off of unsettling, urgent headlines and no wrap-up of the day with a mawkish end segment calling up some element of Americana.
Instead, the new evening-news anchor took viewers from Washington to Puerto Rico to outer space in under half an hour, part of a bid by CBS to lure new viewers to its venerable evening newscast, which has ties to some of most legendary practitioners of TV journalism and yet runs behind its rivals. In an anchor role once reserved for Walter Cronkite, O’Donnell delivered a no-nonsense newscast that was packed with information and left little time for gimmicks.

Norah O’Donnell will make her “CBS Evening News” debut, of course, on TV. But that doesn’t mean CBS News isn’t mindful of the new ways in which news aficionados get their information in an era of smartphone alerts and viral tweets.
When O’Donnell launches a new era at the venerable newscast Monday night, complete with an interview with Jeff Bezos and Caroline Kennedy, she will become the latest anchor of a program tied to longstanding TV tradition. This is the newscast, after all, once led by Walter Cronkite. And yet, O’Donnell may be able to kick off a few new conventions.
“We value the legacy of this broadcast, and Norah does as well, but we know we have to have an evolution into the next world,” says Susan Zirinsky, president of CBS News, in an interview. “CBS Evening News” will appear each weekday evening at 10 p.

Norah O’Donnell said Tuesday she wouldn’t be the new “CBS Evening News” anchor if not for the network’s recent upheaval.
O’Donnell, who takes over on July 15 as the anchor of the network’s evening newscast, spoke at TheWrap’s Power Women Breakfast NYC about how CBS has changed its corporate culture since the ouster of CEO Les Moonves, “CBS This Morning” co-anchor Charlie Rose and others.
When TheWrap Editor-in-Chief Sharon Waxman asked directly if she would have gotten the gig without that upheaval, she responded, “I don’t think so.”
She added: “I would not have taken this job if Susan Zirinsky were not president,” referring to CBS News’ new leader, who replaced David Rhodes in January amid ratings woes as well as #MeToo issues.
