In the six years since the film academy’s music branch first incorporated 15-candidate shortlists into their annual Oscar nominations voting process, a total of 24 films have each been named semi-finalists for both Best Original Score and Best Original Song. This includes five 2023 releases – “American Symphony,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” – which constitute one of the largest groups of double dippers so far. Whether each will ultimately be nominated for both, one, or neither of the music awards remains to be seen, but some insight can be gained by analyzing the fates of their 19 predecessors.
Last year, the roster of dual music shortlist entrants grew by four with the inclusion of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.” Those films all subsequently became Oscar nominees in some capacity,...

Deep Fear, not to be confused with last year’s film about monsters under the streets of Paris (which is probably why they added the “Sharks vs Narcs” subtitle to the film for its digital release), is a call back to the shark films of the past. Not to Jaws or its imitators but to something earlier, like Shark!, Shark’s Treasure, and The Deep where the sharks were a secondary plot element, an added threat for the protagonists to face in addition to other humans.
In the case of Deep Fear that would be Naomi whom we first see showing her co-worker Barney how easily a reef shark can be steered away from people. When she surfaces her partner Jackson that he’s booked another tour.

Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti made it clear why he was making fun of Netflix in his latest Cannes film entry, A Brighter Tomorrow.
There’s a moment in the film when Moretti’s doppelganger filmmaker is debating with a Netflix streaming exec: The suit wants him to establish his story in two minutes. But the director refuses to budge: What about the first 10? The first 37 minutes? There’s also a snark in the scene about there being no Italian film stars anymore.
At today’s press conference for A Brighter Tomorrow, Moretti expounded that he wasn’t just jabbing specifically at Netflix, but he was knocking all streamers in their encroachment on cinema. Moretti happens to also be a cinema owner.

Oscars 2023: Sofia Carson urges women of the world to 'give themselves an applause' amid performance
Los Angeles, March 13 (Ians) Singer-actor Sofia Carson and 14-time Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren performed their nominated song ‘Applause’ from the film ‘Tell It Like a Woman’ at the Academy Awards.
Carson urged the women of the world to “give themselves an applause” during the simple, stark performance of the ballad.
Carson wore a bejeweled gown over a bodysuit, as seen in silhouette in the spotlight at the Dolby Theatre, and walked over to the piano at song’s conclusion to embrace the much-decorated Warren, who accompanied the vocal performance in a white suit, reports Variety.
Prior to her collaboration with Warren, Carson starred in Disney’s ‘Descendants’ and contributed to the franchise’s three soundtracks. Since ‘Descendants’, she starred in the hit Netflix summer flick, ‘Purple Hearts’ and recorded eight original songs for the romance film.

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

The 14 Oscar nominations Alex North received for his film scores between 1952 and 1985 make him one of the most-recognized composers in academy history, but also one of the most overlooked, as all of his outings were unsuccessful. He did, however, earn the organization’s esteem in 1986 as the recipient of an honorary Oscar – the first given to an artist in his music field. Now, the academy’s board of governors have chosen to fill in another blank space by making Diane Warren the first songwriter on their list of honorary awardees. After 13 unfortunate Best Original Song losses, the time has finally come for the perennial contender to have her day in the sun.

For much of the season the Oscar race for Best Original Song has appeared to be a head-to-head duel between Billie Eilish and Finneas‘s “No Time to Die” theme song and Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s “Encanto” ballad “Dos Oruguitas.” But there’s a chance we’re underestimating Beyonce‘s empowerment anthem “Be Alive” from “King Richard.” She reminds me of H.E.R., who upset to win this award last year for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Diane Warren is of course no stranger to film songwriting. The Grammy and Emmy winner has received 12 Best Original Song Oscar nominations, including one earlier this year for “Io Si (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead.” So how does she decide which films gets the honor of boasting a trademark Diane Warren ballad? “I either read the script or I see like a rough cut of the movie and it has to be something I feel inspired by, to be honest, something that makes me wanna write a song for it,” Warren tells Gold Derby (watch above). “It has to move me in some way.”

Casting director and producer Don Phillips, who helped launch the careers of such actors as Sean Penn, Matthew McConaughey and Mary Steenburgen, passed away on Thanksgiving Day from natural causes. He would have turned 81 on Dec. 21.
Phillips received his first break when he landed an entry-level job in the casting department of filmmaker Otto Preminger’s 1971 movie Such Good Friends. Impressed by Phillips, Preminger took an ad in Variety and Backstage to praise the novice’s work on the film.
The acknowledgement led to Phillips getting hired to do extras casting on Sidney Lumet’s Serpico starring Al Pacino with his job subsequently expanding to casting the entire film. Lumet then tapped him as casting director on his next film, Dog Day Afternoon, also starring Pacino. Phillips is credited with holding out for actor John Cazale to be cast opposite Pacino as Sal.

Sophia Loren just won her 7th Best Actress statue at home in Italy
Strangely we never saw any of the trades print a full list of Italy's David Di Donatello nominations this year, always just linking to the Italian site which does not have the list displayed in a way where you can copy and paste it easily. Alas. Hidden Away, a biopic of an obscure artist, led the nominations and came out the big winner too. Bad Tales was not far behind in the nomination count but won only one prize. Netflix's Italian original Rose Island had the third most nominations.
The awards were held a few days ago (oops) so it's past time to share the winners. Sophia Loren's Oscar hopes may not have panned out stateside but she won yet again in Italy for The Life Ahead. A few notes after the jump.

Giorgio Diritti’s biopic “Hidden Away,” about crazed primitivist painter Antonio Ligabue, was the big winner at Italy’s 66th David di Donatello Awards, the country’s top film prizes.
The Davids were held with an in-person ceremony aired from two venues amid a strong spirit of restart as Italian movie theaters gradually begin to reopen.
“Hidden Away,” which was the frontrunner with 15 nominations, scored seven statuettes including best picture, director and actor honors won by Elio Germano who tackles “the fiendishly difficult role” of the self-taught artist “with customary gusto,” as Variety critic Jay Weissberg noted in his review.
The best actress statuette went to Sophia Loren for her role as Madame Rosa, a former prostitute and Holocaust survivor, in Netflix Original “The Life Ahead,” directed by her son Edoardo Ponti. The Italian icon’s return to the big screen after a decade had been snubbed by the Oscars earlier this year.

Italy’s 66th David di Donatello Awards are set to celebrate on May 11 a year of resilience for Cinema Italiano that also looks likely to germinate some creative renewal, just as Italian movie theaters start to reopen and production is booming.
Giorgio Diritti’s biopic “Hidden Away,” about crazed primitivist painter Antonio Ligabue, Gianni Amelio’s wistful “Hammamet,” which reconstructs the Tunisian self-exile of scandal-plagued Italian leader Bettino Craxi, and dark drama “Bad Tales” by the D’Innocenzo Brothers lead the crowded field for Italy’s equivalent of the Oscars, with no clear frontrunner.
Significantly, “Hidden Away,” which scooped 15 nominations, and “Bad Tales,” which scored 13, both star actor Elio Germano. And Germano also plays the lead in another standout title in the Davids race, Netflix Italian Original “The Incredible Story of Rose Island,” which landed 11 noms, including one for the pic’s producer, multihyphenate Matteo Rovere, whose Groenlandia Group is having a banner year.

How could a movie be in contention for six Oscars and go home with nothing? Legendary Oscar shutouts include Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” which was zero for 10 last year, as well as his film “Gangs of New York” (2002), the Coens’ “True Grit” (2010), and David O. Russell’s “American Hustle” (2014). Losing a total of 11 categories were “The Turning Point” (1977) and “The Color Purple” (1985).
When most categories have five nominees, and Best Picture has more, snubs happen. But why did $35 million “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which won the Golden Globe for Screenplay, the often-predictive SAG Ensemble, and Best Editing awards, lose so resoundingly to a series of lower-budget, less mainstream movies?
It’s not the fault of the Netflix awards team, who received a record 36 Oscar nominations and seven wins for “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “My Octopus Teacher,” and more. But why did their best efforts (and spending...

It’s been a good couple of months for R&b singer-songwriter H.E.R. She surprised us by winning Song of the Year at the Grammys on March 14 for her Black Lives Matter protest anthem “I Can’t Breathe.” Then on April 25 she followed that up by surprising us again: she won Best Song at the Oscars for “Fight for You,” another righteous song from the Black Panthers docudrama “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

H.E.R. was a Grammy favorite from the moment of her career breakthrough, earning five nominations in 2019 including Best New Artist. And in just three years she has amassed 13 nominations and four wins, two of which were this year, and both of which surprised most of our users who made predictions at Gold Derby: Best R&b Song for “Better Than I Imagined” and Song of the Year for...

The 2021 Oscars were presented on Sunday night, April 25, and after such an unpredictable year, thousands of Gold Derby users actually did a pretty good job of predicting the winners. Our collective odds were correct in 18 out of 23 categories. That means our hive mind was only wrong five times. So let’s take a look at the races we got wrong, and check out the complete list of winners here.

Best Actress: Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) — ranked fourth with 4/1 odds
Normally it wouldn’t be surprising when the star of the Best Picture winner also wins for acting, but the way the awards season was going this was a somewhat confounding result. “Nomadland” won Best Picture at the Golden Globes, but McDormand Best Actress lost to Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”). Then “Nomadland” won at the Critics Choice Awards, but McDormand lost...

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

The documentary “Collective” went home empty-handed, and Diane Warren continued her epic losing streak
Among the bigger surprises of the 93rd Oscars were the show’s length, it’s unusual structure and order of winners, that Very abrupt ending, and of course the reveal that Glenn Close knows all about the song “Da Butt.” But there were some surprises and snubs throughout the awards winners as well.
Surprise: “The Father” – Best Adapted Screenplay
Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton won the second award of the night for the adaptation of Zeller’s own play “The Father,” giving us a surprise early. The film beat the screenplays for “Nomadland,” “One Night in Miami” and the nine credited writers on “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Maybe the real surprise is that Regina King managed to get through the reading of “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’s” full title without tripping up.
