The Wild Robot‘s Oscar prospects may have gotten a boost on Wednesday as the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its sixth annual award winners. The animated feature won Best Original Score for a Studio Film, defeating three of its Oscar rivals: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave. The last of this year’s Best Score Oscar nominees, The Brutalist, competed in another category at the Scl Awards, winning Best Original Score for an Independent Film.
So does that mean the Oscar will come down to The Wild Robot and The Brutalist? In the Scl Awards’ previous five years, they agreed with the Oscars three times: Joker (2019), Soul (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). In 2021, the Scl voted for Encanto (studio) and The Green Knight (independent), but the Oscar went to Dune. And for 2022, the Scl picked Nope (studio) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (independent), while the Oscars opted for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Mickey 17 New Trailer Sees The Batman Star Robert Pattinson Come To Terms With Being An "Expendable"

Warner Bros. Pictures has just shared a new trailer (via SFFGazette.com) for Mickey 17, the next groundbreaking cinematic experience from the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho.
In the movie, the unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job...to die, for a living.
This sneak peek offers a better idea of what to expect from Mickey 17 after it was pushed from its previous 2024 release. The movie looks thought-provoking and bonkers in equal measure, and Pattinson looks like he's having a blast as this "Expendable."
Talking to Elle earlier this week, the actor confirmed rumours that he initially based Mickey's voice on Jackass icon Steve-o:
"I used to love, and I still do love, Jackass. I remember listening to an interview with Steve-o years ago and he...

With critical and box office hits like 2022’s “Nope” and the new theatrical release “One of Them Days,” Keke Palmer is stepping into her star-era, and according to her, it’s been a long time coming.
In a recent interview with The Cut, Palmer reflected on her time as a child actress in films like “Akeelah and the Bee” and the Nickelodeon show “True Jackson, VP.” While many of her peers received a great deal of attention of similar work, Palmer always felt a bit ignored.
“I wasn’t necessarily in the same conversations as Victoria Justice or Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus at that time,” she said. “It was very much ‘That’s the Black show’ or ‘That’s Keke Palmer, the Black girl on the network.’”
At the time, Palmer was only 15, so this was not only hard to understand, but to cope with emotionally.

Keke Palmer's new comedy One of Them Days has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record. The movie, which was produced by Insecure's Issa Rae, was directed by Lawrence Lamont (who previously collaborated with Rae on Max's Rap Sh!t) from the debut screenplay by Syreeta Singleton (who was the showrunner of Rap Sh!t). It co-stars Palmer and singer-songwriter Sza as best friends Dreux and Alyssa alongside an ensemble cast that includes Vanessa Bell Calloway, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Dewayne Perkins, Lil Rel Howery, and Janelle James.
The new Keke Palmer movie is the latest in a string of prominent projects for the actor, who kicked off her career in the mid 2000s and first rose to prominence when she starred opposite Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in 2006's Akeelah and the Bee. She parlayed this success as a child actor into roles in projects such as Disney's Jump In! and Nickelodeon's True Jackson,...

So what’s the cinema antidote to the brutal and frozen tundra outside our doors (and let’s not get into the West Coast)? How about a raunchy, rollicking buddy comedy? Hmm, that’s usually Summer popcorn fodder, but that’s not the only “rule” that this new flick is breaking. Rather than two mismatched male comic actors, this focuses on the friendship (though strained at times) of two twenty-something African American women. That’s a nice “flip”, along with the pairing of a screen “vet” and a star from the world of hip hop (and R&b/pop). Now that’s a combo sure to end those winter doldrums, along with its “Cali” backdrop. So that’s the setting, as the principals frantically try to survive a zany twenty-four hours that certainly qualifies as One Of Them Days that will put their bond to the test.

As people begin to assess what they lost in the Los Angeles wildfires, producer Amanda Rohlke and production designer and art director Amelia Steely are encouraging industry colleagues to share images with property owners to help with insurance claims and offer sentimental value.
The idea came to Rohlke and Steely on Monday when they were texting with a friend whose family lost their house in the Palisades. Rohlke suddenly remembered she had shot a film at the house in 2013 and that the crew took lots of photos. She contacted the art department from the shoot to try to find the photos, and when Rohlke updated her friends, Steely realized she too had photos from various locations.
“It occurred to me, wow, there are all these resources that homeowners may not know about,” Steely said. “Often the homeowner’s absent and doesn’t know that somebody has taken hundreds of photos of their home.

Keke Palmer went from a child star to one of the greatest personalities in Hollywood, and she worked her way up there by hard work and trust in herself. Unlike many nepotism babies who receive projects just landing on their laps, Palmer had to audition for roles while supporting her family.

Her time spent singing in a church choir and performing in community theater became fundamental in her endeavor to bag Hollywood roles. While Palmer admitted that her parents accompanied her on auditions, she wasn’t particularly happy during her childhood.

The Judas and the Black Messiah cast brings the story of a man who infiltrated the Black Panthers to life with several recognizable stars. Directed by Shaka King, Judas and the Black Messiah primarily centers on the events that preceded the 1969 assassination of Fred Hampton, a 21-year-old Black Panther leader who served as Chairman for the Illinois chapter, beginning with criminal William O'Neal infiltrating the group as an FBI informant. It is a true-crime story with an incredible ensemble, most of whom play real-life characters.
Judas and the Black Messiah's main cast is led by Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton and Lakeith Stanfield as O'Neil. Previously titled Goat, the next feature from Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions is now titled Him, and Vanity Fair’s new behind-the-scenes image unveiled this morning offers new details on the sports horror movie.
Him is currently set to release in theaters on September 19, 2025.
Justin Tipping (Kicks) will direct the sports-themed psychological horror tale for Monkeypaw and Universal. Based on a pitch by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the upcoming horror movie centers on a “promising young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star.” It’s described as “a blood-chilling journey into the inner sanctum of fame, power, and the pursuit of excellence at any cost.”
Marlon Wayans will star alongside Julia Fox, Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”), Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, and Grammy nominee Tierra Whack.
The new image doesn’t reveal much in the way of plot or horror, but it does come with interesting insight.
Him is currently set to release in theaters on September 19, 2025.

Keke Palmer is one of the few actresses who worked on both Nickelodeon and Disney Channel at the start of her fame.
During an appearance on The Toast, hosted by Claudia & Jackie Oshry, she explained the differences between working on the two networks as a kid. She had her breakthrough role on Nickelodeon’s True Jackson, VP, and went on to star in Disney’s Jump In!
“I’ll say Disney is really amazing when it comes to not only the storytelling that you see onscreen, but the storytelling even within the company, like they are storytelling through marketing, through their employees,” Palmer said. “People got pins in the office. They are literally a whole like universe, and I think that feels good, especially when you’re a little kid ’cause the magic doesn’t end. Where Are They Now? Checking in on Former Child Stars - Main Image
Being a celebrity is no joke, and while some adults have problems with handling wealth and fame, several child stars had to deal with so much pressure at a much earlier age.
Child actors have been known to have very tough lives outside of the lighthearted shows they’ve been on, and their transition to adulthood is usually paved with all kinds of mistakes made public because of their status.
Not everyone manages to make the peaceful transition from child actor to just actor, and we take a look at the status of some promising young talents from before and where they ended up today.

Horror continues to be a major audience draw as a genre, and this year has delivered horror successes like Longlegs, Smile 2, and the critically-acclaimed The Substance. The genre continues to be attractive to filmmakers as horror flicks often feature smaller budgets, but this doesn't deter audiences. Every year, there are a few standout horror hits, and 2022 is certainly no different.
2022 saw the release of the Scream legacy sequel, which revitalized the franchise, and Halloween Ends, which ended that franchise's reboot trilogy. A number of standout original horror movies were also released, including Barbarian, which shocked audiences with its surprising twists and turns, and Smile, which reaped the benefits of a stellar marketing campaign to become a major box office success. Other notable titles include Jordan Peele's Nope, Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Menu, and Men, but the year also delivered two installments of what would become a horror trilogy.

Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, the Toronto International Film Festival and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group have announced the inaugural class of emerging filmmakers for their “No Drama” initiative.
Born from the mind of Peele, “No Drama” asks the artists to reflect on this question: “What’s your biggest fear? What monsters lurk in the deepest corners of your inner thoughts?”
Five filmmakers have been selected to create proof of concept or short films that explore horror across cultures, time, environments and society. Chandler Crump, Charlie Dennis, Helena Hawkes, Jared Leaf and Ariel Zengotita will each receive a $50,000 grant from TIFF to produce their projects during the one-year, non exclusive program.
“I couldn’t be more excited to welcome the first class of ‘No Drama’ filmmakers to the Monkeypaw family. Chandler, Charlie, Helena, Ariel and Jared each bring a unique instinct to genre storytelling. I’m inspired and chilled by their approaches to examining fear,...

Not long after the duo welcomed their son, Leo, Jackson’s comment contributed to their marriage falling off, as the Nope star opted to take things to court.

At first glance, a revival of the prank show “Scare Tactics” seems like an odd fit for Monkeypaw, the production company founded by Jordan Peele and behind such blockbuster hits like “Nope” and “Monkey Man.” But the more you dive into USA Network’s new project, the more the reality series makes sense for one of the more ambitious, meticulous and genre-bending companies in Hollywood.
Created by Scott Hallock and Kevin Healey, the original “Scare Tactics” premiered on Syfy in 2003. The series follows a simple premise: Each episode chronicles a group of “victims” who have been placed in a horrific situation made real by Hollywood magic and trained actors.
“You’re trying to make a horror movie for [the subjects], but for the audience, you’re trying to make a comedy,” Win Rosenfeld, president of Monkeypaw, told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “We’re not trying to traumatize anyone for life.

Warning: Contains spoilers for the first episode of Scare Tactics (2024)
TV has brought audiences so many prank shows over the decades that it’s possible to name superlatives. Jackass: most violent. Betty White’s Off Their Rockers: most senior citizens. Punk’d: most celebrities. Jury Duty: most elaborate. The Magic Prank Show: most magical. USA’s Scare Tactics revival already had a premise baked in, but not only does it fail to be most horrifying; it also left me wondering whether entertainment has evolved beyond the need for new prank shows entirely.
Given that what made it to air never looked, let’s say, particularly cost-intensive, the Scare Tactics franchise — a hidden-camera show in which ordinary people are the marks for terrifying pranks with names like “Laboratory Meltdown” and “Orgy From Hell” — has gone through multiple eras and homes. It premiered on what was then called the Sci-Fi Channel...

Is Warner Bros. marketing a completely different movie than what South Korean and Award-winning “Parasite” filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho “Memories of Murder”) intended with his upcoming sci-fi film “Mickey 17,” or is it just a case of tailoring to radically different audiences and territories?

If you’ve heard anything at all about the film Abruptio, it’s most likely been positive, and you’ve probably wondered why you can’t find it in a theater or streaming. All of that is changing, which is a very good thing if you’re a fan of unique horror movies.
Released in 2023, Abruptio played at 37 international festivals, winning 21 awards along the way. I was lucky enough to receive a screener at that time, and I absolutely loved it. But, don’t take just my word for it. My colleague Brian Fanelli recently had the opportunity to watch Abruptio and he also gave it an extremely positive review.
Abruptio opened in select theaters on September 27, and will continue its run through at least mid-October. Hopefully, it will expand into even more theaters, because it’s a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Although their comedic chemistry is undeniable, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele‘s careers have gone in different directions.
Nearly a decade after their Comedy Central sketch comedy show Key & Peele ended, Key admitted that he and his former onscreen partner “don’t see each other that often anymore” amid their busy lives on opposite coasts.
“Which is, to me, a tragedy,” he told People, noting that “your lives start to evolve and move in different directions.”

Back in 2022, Get Out, Us, and Nope writer/director Jordan Peele‘s production company Monkeypaw Productions acquired the genre film pitch Goat from writers Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the plan being that Peele would be producing Goat as part of Monkeypaw’s overall deal with Universal Pictures. The sports-related horror project made its way through production under the title Him earlier this year, and now – even though the movie won’t be reaching theatres until September 19, 2025 – the finished product has been given its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Him has been rated R for strong/bloody violence, language throughout, sexual material, nudity and some drug use.
Justin Tipping – who made his feature directorial debut with the 2016 drama Kicks – directed the film, with lead roles going to Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie), Tyriq Withers (The Game), and Julia Fox (Uncut Gems).
