Exclusive: Sam Esmail has made two key hires for his Esmail Corp. The company, run by Esmail and Chad Hamilton, has tapped Sam Shafaghi as Creative Executive in film and Natalie Domengeaux as Creative Executive in television.

Shafaghi, a graduate of the AFI Conservatory’s producing program, joined the company as an intern in 2019 when they first expanded into features. He is currently working on Esmail Corp productions such as Famous, the A24 dark comedy thriller starring Zac Efron, and the upcoming South Korea-set thriller The Hole. Shafaghi reports to Nick Krishnamurthy, the company’s Senior Vice President of Features.

Domengeaux joins Esmail Corp after working as a coordinator at Drew Goddard’s production company, Goddard Textiles. She reports to Sarah Matte, Senior Vice President of Television. Domengeaux is working on the company’s upcoming adaptation of Lee Samantha Chang’s critically acclaimed novel The Family Chao, among other projects on the television slate.

Armie Hammer’s outlaw days in Hollywood are coming to an end, thanks to indie Western film “Frontier Crucible.”

Hammer will return to acting for the first time since being accused of sexual assault in 2021. After the allegations, which also suggested Hammer had cannibalistic tendencies, the “Call Me by Your Name” star was dropped from roles in Amazon’s “Shotgun Wedding,” Paramount’s “The Offer,” Starz’s “Gaslit,” and Broadway’s “The Minutes.” The accusations were investigated by the LAPD; no charges were filed.

Adam Ray is bringing his Dr. Phil parody to Netflix with a wild new special in which the comedian — dressed as the mustachioed talk show host — will come face to face with Dr. Phil himself.

Debuting on Netflix on Nov. 19, the untitled “Adam Ray’s Dr. Phil Comedy Special” will also see Ray-as-Phil interview special guests including Patton Oswalt, Jay Pharoah and “Gollum,” and get to know the audience through silly questions and games.

Ray’s “Dr. Phil Live!” had become one of the hottest tickets at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles before the comedian took it on the road across America. The show will soon expand beyond the United States.

The Netflix special marks the first time the real Dr. Phil has sat down in person with Ray.

The new series follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q), who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division — a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.

Lynch will play Thomas Laffont, a retired former police partner who comes back to help Ballard run the department. A kind, seasoned detective and crack interrogator — he’s a rock for Ballard.

In addition to Q, Lynch joins previously cast Courtney Taylor, who plays Samira Parker, a member of Ballard’s team.

The duo join previously announced series leads Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Shannon in the show, which will tell the story of U.S. President James Garfield (Shannon) and his assassination by Charles Guiteau (Macfadyen). It is based on the novel “Destiny Of The Republic” by Candice Millard.

After just two seasons, the Courteney Cox-starring horror series “Shining Vale” has been given the axe by Starz, and that’s not even the worst news about the show this afternoon.

Variety reports, “The Season 2 finale of the horror comedy, produced by Warner Bros. TV, aired on December 1. Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the year.”

“Shining Vale” Season 2 premiered on the Starz streaming service on October 13, 2023, and Variety notes that the show didn’t find enough of an audience to justify a third season.

Writer-director Sam Esmail premiered his latest film Leave the World Behind at the opening night of AFI Fest on Wednesday night, where he opened up about getting notes on the film from the Obamas — who served as producers — and comparisons of the project to his past work on Mr. Robot.

The film is based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, and unfolds as Amanda (Julia Roberts) books her family an impromptu staycation at a luxurious home in Long Island. As she and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) get settled in, two strangers — G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) — upend their trip in the middle of the night, claiming ownership of the home. Together, they contend with the mysterious ramifications of a nationwide cyberattack that leaves them vulnerable to the earth’s elements and human nature’s darkness.

Netflix has set the voice cast for “Carol & the End of the World,” an adult animated series created by Dan Guterman that will debut on Dec. 15.

Martha Kelly will play the title role. The series takes place as extinction is imminent thanks to a mysterious planet hurtling towards Earth. While most people feel liberated to pursue their wildest dreams, Carol, quiet and always uncomfortable, woman stands alone — lost among the hedonistic masses.

Kelly is best known for starring in the FX comedy “Baskets” as Chip Baskets’ (Zach Galifianakis) friend Martha Brooks. In 2022, she guest starred in HBO’s “Euphoria” as drug dealer Laurie, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Kelly’s other prominent credits include “Gaslit” on Starz, “Hacks” on Max and “The Great North” on Fox.

In the new series “Lessons in Chemistry,” Larson plays Elizabeth Zott, a determined chemist who faces all sorts of challenges in the 1950s when women had to fight to be seen and heard.

The Apple TV+ series, adapted from the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus, will debut with its first two episodes on Oct. 13. Larson also executive produces the series, which contains eight episodes total. Lee Eisenberg serves as the showrunner.

Before there was John Wick, there was Winston Scott, the manager of Manhattan’s high-end hitman hotel. That’s the premise of The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a three-part prequel series that begins streaming Friday on Peacock.

Based on the Keanu Reeves action film franchise, The Continental takes place in 1970s Manhattan and explores how Winston (Colin Woodell) came to lead the hotel for professional assassins. For the first time since “The United States of Tara,” Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson is heading back to television in a significant capacity with “Lessons in Chemistry.” The Apple TV+ limited series based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus debuts on October 13.

On Thursday, Apple TV+ released the first official trailer for the new series, which was developed by Lee Eisenberg (“WeCrashed”).

Here’s the logline:
