Early this year, it was announced that Zac Efron (The Iron Claw) had signed on to star in the A24 thriller Famous for director Jody Hill, and it was revealed that he’ll be playing dual roles in the film, which is based on a novel by Blake Crouch. Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) has since joined the cast, and now that production is underway in Los Angeles, a press release confirms that Nicholas Braun (Succession), Stephanie Koenig (Lessons in Chemistry), Debby Ryan (Insatiable), Mekki Leeper (Jury Duty), and Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night) also have roles in the film.

What could possibly be better than Zac Efron? It sounds like a trick question, we know. Surely there's no beating the American acting heartthrob, right? Well, how about two Zac Efrons? Because that's exactly what we'll be getting in Observe & Report writer-director Jody Hill's Famous. A celebrity doppelgänger thriller based on Blake Crouch's same-named Nyt bestseller, Hill's movie has, per Deadline's reporting, landed distribution via A24, teeing up a reunion between Efron and the studio behind his wrestling drama The Iron Claw.
Michael Sagol, Sam Esmail, and Chad Hamilton are all aboard to produce the picture, which will see Efron star as Hollywood hunk James Jansen and overeager fan Lance Dunkquist, who just so happen to both look exactly alike. However, whilst the prospect of two Efrons gadding about sounds like a dream come true on paper, in the film — as in Crouch's book — the bigger picture is a little less rosy.

Nearly one year after Ray Liotta’s unexpected death in the Dominican Republic, his cause of death has been released.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the 67-year-old actor died from heart and respiratory issues. Specific causes of death list pulmonary edema — fluid in the lungs, respiratory insufficiency and acute heart failure. The report also noted atherosclerosis, a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls, as an underlying issue.
Liotta, best known for “Goodfellas,” “Cop Land” and “Narc,” died in his sleep last May in the Dominican Republic while shooting “Dangerous Waters”. The actor had recently starred as twin brothers in the “Sopranos” prequel “The Many Saints of Newark” while appearing in Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.” He had recently appeared in Elizabeth Banks’ “Cocaine Bear,” which debuted this past February and earned decent reviews and $89.2 million worldwide.

Looking back on Seth Rogen‘s earlier career, did anyone think he’d be part of a cast of a Best Picture nominee like “The Fabelmans“? I mean, sure, yeah: Rogen’s proven repeatedly that he has the acting and writing chops to be taken seriously in the movie industry. For every forgettable comedy like “Observe And Report” (or raunchy one like “Pineapple Express“), Rogen has also been part of estimable, all-time classics, like his acting debut “Freaks And Geeks” or 2007’s “Superbad.”

Guillermo del Toro recently unveiled new details for his passion project based on the “Pinocchio” fable, a dark take on the boy puppet for Netflix. At the same time however, Disney is still plotting its live-action remake of “Pinocchio,” meaning there could be two very different versions of the same story on screen in the near future. Those two dueling projects wouldn’t be the first example of twin movies arriving within months or weeks of one another. Sometimes it’s because of studios racing to adapt a popular IP or moment in history, because of scripts that float all across town or because of sheer coincidence. But we’ve had years with two mall cop movies, two movies about terrorist attacks on the White House or two movies about talking bugs and fish. Here are some other notable twin movies.

WarnerMedia’s grand streaming experiment continues apace with HBO Max’s list of new releases for September 2020.
This month, HBO Max is bring some serious dramatic heat with the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi series Raised by Wolves arriving on Sept. 3. And if science fiction isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, then HBO Max has identified something that is: true crime. The Murders at White House Farm will arrive at a date to be determined in September.
In addition to those intriguing original offerings, HBO Max is making the best of its WarnerMedia library this month. Doctor Who season 12 makes its long-awaited streaming debut on Sept. 1. Also arriving on the first of the month are Clerks, Election, and the hopefully-not-too-timely V for Vendetta.
Recent horror hit The Invisible Man arrives on Sept. 19. It is complemented by HBO Max original comedy Unpregnant on Sept. 10.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Max this month.

It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a load of new content every month, but you also lose a bunch of old favorites, too, as the rights agreements expire and they hop over to some other streaming service. September will be no different, as we’ve now got a list of everything that’s set to be removed from Netflix on the first day of the month after next.
There are a number of notable titles among them, too. First of all, the first two Bad Boys movies are leaving the site on September 1st, so make sure to give them another watch sometime in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, Netflix is losing a couple of classic horrors as well. Namely, 1988’s Child’s Play and the original Candyman, ahead of the Jordan Peele-produced remake that’s on the way.

Even with so much fantastic content to watch over the past few months on every major streaming service, there’s still no denying that Netflix reigns supreme when it comes to offering the largest and most diverse collection of films and shows. June has seen a huge influx of new stuff to watch, including classics like E.T. the Extraterrestrial and The Silence of the Lambs and underrated gems like Observe and Report. Now, as the month finally comes to a close, the platform has one last drop today that’s bringing some new movies and series alongside a comedy special.
One of those titles, Extraction, is certain to be extremely confusing to some subscribers. Not to be confused with 2020’s Chris Hemsworth action movie, 2015’s Extraction is another action flick starring Bruce Willis and Kellan Lutz. June has been an excellent month for Netflix content. Subscribers have been treated to such wonderful classics as Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extraterrestrial, the overlooked and quite polarizing Observe and Report, Spike Lee’s new hit Da 5 Bloods, and season 4 of the ever-popular 13 Reasons Why. Never content to leave fans waiting very long though, today marks yet another day of content drops for the streaming service, so get ready for even more stuff to keep you glued to your screen.

A wide assortment of new movies were added to Netflix last week, and in case you’re not sure where to start, here’s a brief look at some of the best of them.
First of, in any list that includes E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, it has to go first. Steven Spielberg’s timeless classic is, on the vague off-chance you’re unaware, about a friendly and childlike alien who’s accidentally abandoned on Earth and befriends the young Elliot, with whom he develops an empathic symbiosis and who must save him from government agents investigating the presence.

Netflix is no stranger to underrated and overlooked comedies. The addition of films like Sex Drive, Wine Country and Sleeping With Other People prove that there’s plenty for comedy fans to watch if they’re willing to dig for lesser-known but utterly hilarious content. One such underrated flick has been making its way up the service’s Top 10 list over the past 24 hours, and it’s well worth checking out if you’re a Seth Rogen fan.
After dropping on June 1st, the 2009 comedy Observe and Report took very little time to garner plenty of attention. It currently sits at #9 on the Top 10 Movies list, and while this occasionally mean-spirited film might be an acquired taste, it’s a hell of a good time if you can deal with its darker elements.

Netflix has been doing a fantastic job at keeping everyone occupied and happy during the long and exhausting quarantine and isolation many of us have had to deal with since the beginning of the current pandemic. May upped the ante with its movies and shows, such as Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems, popular new comedies like The Wrong Missy and The Lovebirds, and even the full Back to the Future trilogy. Thankfully, June is shaping up to be yet another great month for Netflix content.
One film in particular, Observe and Report, drops today and is well worth a look for any fans of Seth Rogen‘s dry and sarcastic style of humor. Over the course of two films and two successful HBO series, filmmaker Jody Hill has carved out a career as a provocateur centered on toxic narcissists, unchecked male ego and huge, mean-spirited jackasses. His work tends to draw admiration and ire in equal measure, as the lead characters of his stories are always aggressively unlikeable, pushing the boundary of just how much an audience can empathize with contemptible blowhards.

"Why aren't you recording this, Don? This is part of the narrative." Netflix has debuted a full-length trailer for indie comedy The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, the latest film from filmmaker Jody Hill in collaboration with his friend Danny McBride. The descriptions for this only say that it's about a great hunter named Buck Ferguson who takes his trusted cameraman Don on an epic weekend adventure to reconnect with his young son. "Buck sets out for what soon becomes an unexpectedly epic adventure of father-son reconnection in the great outdoors" Josh Brolin stars with Danny McBride (who co-wrote the script) and Montana Jordan. This looks like a nice bit of comedy and satire, making fun of all the serious father-son hunting trips. It's perfect for Netflix. Here's the full official trailer for Jody Hill's The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, from YouTube: The great hunter Buck...

“Vice Principals” and “Eastbound & Down” co-creator Jody Hill is back with his first film in almost a decade. Like all his major projects to date, “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” is a comedy with Danny McBride in a plum role. Hill and McBride penned the Netflix script with John Carcieri, a producer on their past HBO series.
Leading the cast is John Brolin as Buck Ferguson, a hunter who fronts “Buck Fever” wildlife documentary specials. He brings his cameraman (McBride) and pre-teen son (Montana Jordan of “Young Sheldon”) on a rugged trek, but the latter misses the modern comforts of 21st century life. In his boredom, the boy reveals that his mother (Carrie Coon) — whom Buck misses two years post-divorce — is about to become engaged (Scoot McNairy of “Halt and Catch Fire” plays her boyfriend).

At this point, you probably know whether or not you’re a fan of filmmaker Jody Hill’s unique brand of humor. As seen in his previous projects like “Eastbound & Down,” “Observe and Report,” “The Foot Fist Way,” and most recently, “Vice Principals,” Hill has a comedic voice all his own. And in the new trailer for the Netflix film, “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter,” he brings that viewpoint to the world of father and son hunting trips.

In two television series (“Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals”) and two feature films (“The Foot Fist Way” and “Observe and Report”), writer/director Jody Hill and writer/star Danny McBride have created a devastatingly funny and increasingly relevant commentary on the curse of toxic masculinity. The Hill/McBride “hero” is, in most cases, a retrograde blowhard, dumb as a stump and proud as a peacock, the kind of forgotten man that was easy to dismiss until they put their alpha male into the Oval Office.
The specificity with which their best works address (and, to some extent, explain) the broken soul of the American man in the 2010s is, unfortunately, a quality that’s barely present in their latest collaboration – which is particularly disappointing, because they’ve selected such a juicy target. “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” concerns that most macho and yet inexplicable of American male traditions,...

Unlike Sundance or Cannes, the SXSW Film Festival has undergone rapid changes over the past decade. Tied in with the swirling chaos of its Interactive and Music sections, the Austin-based event is known for the discovery of low-budget features and as a launch pad for edgy studio projects favored by the city’s hipsters.
Much of SXSW’s identity took shape during the early aughts, when current iTunes independent film coordinator Matt Dentler brought a range of new American talent into the program. When he left in 2008 for a job in New York, incoming SXSW film producer Janet Pierson was a programming newcomer but a veteran of scene. With her husband, John Pierson, she shepherded the careers of independent filmmakers like Kevin Smith, Spike Lee, and Errol Morris. With SXSW, she was tasked with funneling that experience into the ever-changing ecosystem of film and television.

Audiences may not realize it, but Rough House Pictures has been a pivotal force in American filmmaking over the past decade.
People know Danny McBride as the snarky, self-aggrandizing star of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down” and “Vice Principals,” shows he created with fellow North Carolina School of the Arts alumni Jody Hill and David Gordon Green. But while McBride’s is the most public face, all three men have become influential figures in the film industry.
Green and McBride are writing the Blumhouse reboot of “Halloween,” while Hill is finishing his third film, a comedy starring Josh Brolin. Green has oscillated from the quiet, Southern gothic tales of “George Washington” and “All the Real Girls” to boisterous comedies like “Pineapple Express.” Hill’s debut, “Foot Fist Way,” got the attention of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, who launched Hill’s TV career and gave him the momentum to direct his first studio film,...

Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?
In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.

Walton Goggins plays the flamboyant and hilarious Lee Russell in HBO's Vice Principals, and while he's grateful to be doing something different from his typical typecast role, he still very much thinks his new show is a drama. The actor explained his reasoning to Collider in a recent interview:
It wasn’t surprising to me because I think they’re very dramatic filmmakers. I think Observe and Report is a drama. And I think that Eastbound and Down is a drama that happens to be funny. Vice Principals is a drama about a highly dysfunctional human being with way too much power. So, in some ways, I think Danny was looking for someone that he felt could deliver on the topics of a human personality that they’re looking to explore, and that can also make people laugh. Maybe that’s not me, but I’m having a good time.

Have you been watching Vice Principals on HBO so far? If not, you’re missing a completely deranged new comedy that is only going to get more deranged as it goes. This should not be a surprise since it’s the brainchild of Rough House Pictures, the partnership between Jody Hill, Danny McBride, and David Gordon Green, and it’s their first HBO show since Eastbound & Down went off the air. While many of the same people are working in all departments on Vice Principals, as it unfolds from week to week, it’s clear that they’re not just rehashing the same sort of thing they’ve already done, and that judging this show from its pilot is impossible, because it’s not the same show even now that it was a month ago. One of my favorite things about Vice Principals is the score, which takes some pretty big stylistic swings.

It is a universally acknowledged fact that comedy is hard. The best comedians might make it look effortless, but truly great witticism exists only in the sweet spot where the art and science of humour overlap. The most successful artists in this arena spend years honing their craft – training, performing, and perfecting their skill-set, so we can have a moment or two of levity, and they can have their voices heard.
This is, perhaps, why the comedic greats are beloved. They provide comfort and reassurance when we need it, by generating laughter that skewers the familiar. For comedy to work, it often needs to be relatable in some way – so that sense of connection we have to our favourite comedians can be incredibly strong. For this reason, when a beloved comedian suddenly delivers a dramatic role, it can be even more affecting than if it were performed by a celebrated dramatic actor.

Director Jody Hill (“Observe and Report,” “Eastbound and Down”) is looking for a boy actor to join him and stars Josh Brolin and Danny McBride as a photo double in “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.” The right actor must be Caucasian, under five feet tall, and about 80 pounds. The film, surely capturing Hill and McBride’s brand of dark humor, is about a “down-on-his-luck music manager who discovers a teenage girl with an extraordinary voice while on a music tour in Afghanistan and takes her to Kabul to compete.” Hill is seeking submissions from the Asheville, N.C., area for the Jan. 24 shoot. For more information on “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter,” check out its full casting notice here. All good things must come to an end. It’s a well-worn adage that everyone knows and has to come to terms with at one point or another. It’s funny sometimes that we can detect when something is nearing its conclusion without succinctly knowing the end date yet to be etched in stone. It forces us to enjoy the ride that much more. But of course, to remain just as cliché, when one door closes, another opens
Take into consideration today’s comedy actors that we so often revere; the Seth Rogens, James Francos, Jonah Hills, and basically anyone else has been a part of or recruited into the Apatow group of comedians. Since the premieres of Knocked Up and Superbad in 2007, comedies featuring these actors have reigned in Hollywood, firmly establishing and confirming the popularity of raunchy comedies. Since 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Pineapple Express, however, the...

Deep Impact Vs Armageddon is not the only time similar movies have landed around the same time...
Usually, a competing project is poison for a studio. Especially in the era now where a blockbuster costs the national budget of a small country to get out into the world, you don't want to be up against a film with similar subject matter.
Yet this keeps happening, time and time again. Even now, there are two live action Jungle Book movies in various stages of production, for example. And let us not forget when K-9 and Turner And Hooch once did battle...
But how have the movie showdowns of old turned out? And are there any instances where everyone's a winner?
Er, not many as it happens...
The Haunting Vs The House On Haunted Hill
Let's start with two reasonably budgeted horror films, that both got wide releases. Jan De Bont...

"Ant-Man" may not have had an "Avengers"-esque opening, but Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios always knew the miniature hero would be a tough sell. What the Peyton Reed directed flick can easily lay claim to is that its absolutely the funniest Marvel movie to date. That's right, it's even funnier than "Guardians of the Galaxy" or the first "Iron Man." That claim might be blasphemy to Chris Pratt fans, but watch "Guardians" again. It's a great movie, but not as consistently funny as "Ant-Man." The Scott Lang origin story benefits from a screenplay by four of the most talented screenwriters and comedy talents working today: Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Adam McKay and Paul Rudd. Moreover, the comedy hits you in the most surprising ways. The "she heard" riff was completely unexpected (more on that later) and the banter between Henry Pym (Michael Douglas), Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly...
