"Yellowstone" season 5 will be the last we'll see of the Dutton family in its current form. The series, part of the prolific Taylor Sheridan's cowboy-verse that includes "1883," "1923," and the upcoming "Lawman: Bass Reeves," is coming to an end. That means fans will likely have to say goodbye to one of their favorite characters, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).
Beth Dutton is the daughter of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner), who runs the Yellowstone ranch in Montana. She had a rough time as a child, watching her difficult mother die in front of her. Now she's a financier, protector of her father, and in a relationship with ranch foreman Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser).
That on-again off-again romance between Beth and Rip was the backdrop to a scene in season 1, episode 2, "Kill the Messenger," which looked pretty scary to the audience and was especially intense for Reilly as well. The production...

The second episode of “Yellowstone” brought an average 5 million viewers to CBS when it aired on Sunday night.
This marks a 24% decrease from last week, when the Taylor Sheridan-created series made its debut on broadcast television with a strong 6.6 million viewers — though it should be noted that CBS did not air an NFL doubleheader on Sunday ahead of its own programming the way it did the week before. Like last week, though, Episode 2 of “Yellowstone” benefitted by airing after “60 Minutes,” a consistent ratings-bringer for CBS that was watched by 7.2 million average viewers on Sunday.
Among adults 25-54, the “Yellowstone” episode scored a 0.6 rating, down from a 0.9 the week before.
Titled “Kill the Messenger,” the episode made an obviously major leap from the 2 million viewers it reached when it first aired on Paramount Network in 2018. And for a more recent comparison, viewership of the first installation of Season 5 ranged...

Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.
This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. We've all probably heard the saying "growth and comfort can't ride the same horse." And in the comedy world, there are way too many OGs who refuse to evolve - we all know who they are. The truth is, what we find funny does change over the years - like it or not - because we are always evolving as a society. Good comedy is able to take a clever stab at something very relevant. That's no easy task in today's cultural climate, and yet rising comedy star Ian Lara has managed to strike the right chord when it comes to mastering it.
In Lara's HBO Max special, "Romantic Comedy" (directed by fellow comedian Aida Rodriguez), released on Nov. 11, the 32-year-old beautifully finesses the perfect balance of poking fun at modern dating - never getting cringy about it - and sexual politics. His perfect comedic timing, storytelling specificity, and ability...

Ray Liotta, who starred in the Martin Scorsese mob classic Goodfellas, in addition to roles in Cop Land and Field of Dreams, has died at the age of 67.
A cause of death was not immediately available, but a rep for the actor confirmed to Rolling Stone that Liotta died in his sleep while on location in the Dominican Republic, where he was reportedly shooting the film Dangerous Waters.
Over a career that spanned 40 years, Liotta specialized in portraying tough-talking, no-nonsense characters often embroiled in the criminal underworld, or lighthearted variations of that character in comedies.

The fact-based story about former U.S. Army sergeant Charles Robert Jenkins’ four decades of living in North Korea is to be produced as an English-language limited TV series.
Peter Landesman will direct the series for South Korean financing and production company Moving Pictures Company.
Writer Nick Osborne, who most recently adapted the “Last of the Mohicans” series for HBO Max, is adapting the non-fiction book “The Reluctant Communist: My Desertion, Court-Martial, and Forty-Year Imprisonment in North Korea,” co-written by Jenkins and Time journalist Jim Frederick.
Events began in 1965, some 13 years after the end of the inter-Korean war, when Jenkins abandoned his post in South Korea and walked across the militarized border into North Korea. He believed his action would get him back to the U.S. and earn him a short jail sentence. Instead, he found himself in another sort of prison, living for 40 years under a repressive Communist autocracy.

Chris Rock is no stranger to Emmy. In the 24 years since his first nomination, the celebrated comic has earned a whopping 19 nominations for writing, directing, producing and performing in his series and specials. He has won four of those Emmy bids — three for writing (his self-titled series and two stand-up specials “Bring the Pain” and “Kill the Messenger”) and one for producing “Bring the Pain.”
This Emmy season, Rock is primed to earn two more nominations. The first (and more likely) is as Guest Comedy Actor for his third sting hosting “Saturday Night Live.” That late-night staple gave Rock his big break more than three decades ago. Our exclusive Emmyy predictions have Rock pegged in fifth place for a nomination with odds of 8/1.
The more intriguing prospect is the possibility of a nomination for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for his performance as a 1950s crime boss in “Fargo.

Chris Rock’s 2018 Netflix stand-up comedy special “Tamborine” is adding 27 minutes of previously unreleased footage in a repackaged release. “Chris Rock: Total Blackout, The Tamborine Extended Cut” is set to debut next week on Netflix.
In what Rock and Netflix have dubbed a “remix” of the Grammy-nominated special, the comedian offers (even) more searing observations on race, fatherhood, and politics, the streaming service said on Monday. The extended cut includes never-before-seen jokes, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage.
Watch a chilly Rock tease the special in the above video. There are a whole bunch of tambourines — er, tamborines — hanging from trees in the pretty low-budget promo.
“Chris Rock: Total Blackout, The Tamborine Extended Cut” premieres globally on Netflix on Jan. 12, 2021.
The original “Tamborine” release has a 100% fresh rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It has a 37% rating among viewers, however, so something is up.

CAA Media Finance is representing worldwide distribution rights to “India Sweets and Spices,” produced by Sk Global (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and Madison Wells (“Genius”).
The film is directed by Geeta Malik (“Troublemaker”) and is based on her own script “Dinner With Friends” that won the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in screenwriting. The film follows a young woman who, after her first year at college, returns to her affluent suburban New Jersey home for the summer and discovers distressing secrets about her seemingly picture-perfect Indian American family.
“We don’t often see movies about the duality of identifying strongly with both Indian and American traditions, and not having to choose between them,” Malik said. “And I didn’t want to make a movie specifically about any sort of culture clash. Every generation, no matter what their background, has to find a way to both break free from and embrace their history. That...

Just in time for the holiday season, Netflix has unveiled a host of classics to keep you cozy throughout those long, cold nights. As Oscar season gears up, there are plenty of excellent films on offer in theaters, but nothing beats staying on the couch with an old classic. As the streaming giant enters the Oscar race with “Roma,” viewers will have a chance to see Alfonso Cuarón’s epic, though this one really deserves to be seen on the big screen.
Old standby comedies like “The Big Lebowski” and “Shaun of the Dead” should get you through the holidays with your family, and Yorgos Lanthimos fans can revisit “The Lobster” after seeing what the daring Greek auteur does with “The Favourite.” Guillermo del Toro fans rejoice, “Hellboy” is also hitting the streaming waves in December.

Boy Erased star and New York City native Lucas Hedges explains how he related to a Baptist kid from Arkansas.
Lucas Hedges is, as they say, having a moment. Following his breakout, Oscar-nominated performance two years ago in Kenneth Lonergan’s brilliant Manchester by the Sea (which itself came on the heels of small roles in films like Kill the Messenger and The Grand Budapest Hotel), the 21-year-old New York-based actor has been on something of a tear. After appearing last year in Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, he’s showing up this fall in three already acclaimed films, two of them as the lead: Boy Erased, Mid90s and the upcoming Ben is Back.
In Boy Erased, directed by Joel Edgerton (also an actor himself), Hedges plays Jared Eamons, a character inspired by Garrard Conley, who wrote the memoir the film is based on.

CBS is developing Bait & Tackle, a multi-camera comedy from Stuck In the Middle co-creator/executive producer Linda Figueiredo, musician Brian Kelley, Johnny Galecki’s Alcide Bava Productions and Warner Bros. TV where Alcide Bava is based.
Galecki is executive producing Bait & Tackle alongside Alcide Bava’s new VP, Holly Brown. She replaced Andrew Haas.
Written/executive produced by Figueiredo, Bait & Tackle revolves around three adult siblings who must step up to run the family business—a small town bait & tackle shop—when the family patriarch retires.
Kelley of multi-platinum duo Florida Georgia Line, who is a friend of Galecki’s, also executive produces. This marks the first sale for his production company, CuzBro, with Stephen Snedden and Justin Halliwell.

We were so thrilled when we heard that Garrard Conley's memoir Boy Erased was getting a big-screen adaptation written and directed by Joel Edgerton. The story follows Jared, a teenager living in a small Arkansas town who is unwillingly outed to his devout Baptist parents and subsequently must attend a gay conversion therapy program through his church. It's a compelling story that's already been getting a ton of buzz, and we have been counting down the days until its Nov. 2 release.
That excitement quadrupled when we heard the power players who would head up the cast. Ever since Nicole Kidman knocked our socks off in Big Little Lies, we've been patiently waiting for more opportunities to see her own the theater. She has been cast as Nancy, Jared's mother, and we can hear the Oscar buzz already. Then, we have New Zealander Russell Crowe depicting Jared's pastor father, Marshall.

‘Birds of Prey’ Star Mary Elizabeth Winstead Gives Us Her ‘Strong,’ ‘Emotional’ Take on The Huntress
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is no stranger to big screen comic book adaptations, having played Ramona Flowers in Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult hit “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” She has also portrayed her share of strong female characters in titles including FX series “Fargo” and 2014 biographical crime drama “Kill the Messenger.” Winstead’s new role as Huntress in Warner Bros.’ upcoming female-led “Birds of Prey” is a completely new and different story, though.
“I’m going to start training, and I’ll be learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, too — which is new for me,” Winstead told TheWrap during an interview for her latest film, a dramedy called “All About Nina,” in theaters this weekend.
TheWrap reported earlier this week that Winstead, along with Jurnee Smollett-Bell (“Friday Night Lights”), have been cast in the Margot Robbie-led DC anti-hero team-up “Birds of Prey.”

One of the first things that’s striking about “Chris Rock: Tamborine,” the latest special from the legendary comedian, is the audience. Filmed in Brooklyn, the venue for this hour of introspection, observation, and occasional absurdity has a smaller-sized crowd that feels more in line with its Netflix streaming home. Gone is the to-the-rafters approach of arena-sized performances like Rock’s various Apollo sets. This is a grand re-entry with a smaller focus, but still anchored by all the skill that’s made him essential.
Like Dave Chappelle, another icon who made a Netflix return after a decade away, there’s a good amount of material in “Tamborine” about dealing with fame and a changing relationship to what comes with a high-profile life. Rock’s attitude here is less to revel in the luxuries of his life and more to acknowledge the things that more opportunities put someone in danger of ignoring.

MaryAnn’s quick take… An emotional feast full of humor and pathos about the audacity, the wonder, the horror that is female adolescence. Beautiful, bittersweet, and very generous. I’m “biast” (pro): I am desperate for movies about girls and women; love Ronan and Gerwig

Ever since he was a kid Tom Cruise wanted to work for the Colombian drug cartels? Not quite, but American Made, based on the true story of commerical airline pilot turned international criminal mastermind Barry Seal, hits a lot of the same beats as GoodFellas, though it misses some it tries to hit, too. By the time Barry, in his gleeful voiceover narration, says, “The money was coming in faster than I could launder it,” I felt like I’d seen this all before, and better.
“No, Mister CIA, your code name cannot be ‘Risky Business.’”

MaryAnn’s quick take… It’s tormented hotheads all around with a hero and villain who are almost indistinguishable and same-old spy stuff racing to a seen-it, been-there ticking-clock finale. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good action movie
I’m “biast” (con): this looked really familiar
I have not read the source material

Lordy, save us from young hothead dudes who disobey every order yet save the day, leaving their older, wiser, and more experienced superiors in awe. Let’s not encourage this. Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien: Deepwater Horizon, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) — why not just call him Lank Squarejaw? — is “the best I’ve ever seen” whose test scores are “off the charts” and “through the roof.” He’s got “talent and balls”! He’s got a dead blonde fiancée killed by terrorists — let’s...

While the world contemplates a nuclear-armed North Korea, is a thriller about a rogue nuke the sort of entertainment people are looking for? When it’s as faux-political as American Assassin, the answer just might be yes. Built for action, like its title character, the movie packs a muscular, bloody punch, but mainly it’s a well-oiled diversion.
Director Michael Cuesta, operating more in the vein of his work on Homeland than such features as L.I.E. and Kill the Messenger, proves impressively deft at orchestrating large-scale sequences. The globe-hopping story of covert U.S. operatives zeroing in on terrorist factions and renegade mercenaries...

Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton star in American Assassin, an action packed thriller about an American counterterrorism agent. Directed by Michael Cuesta (Kill The Messenger), the film follows agent Mitch Rapp (O’Brien) as he trains to take out some of the most dangerous known terrorists in order to seek revenge on those that attacked he and the woman he loves - as well as a whole lot of others. The film also stars Sanaa Lathan, Taylor Kitsch and Shiva... Read More...

MaryAnn’s quick take… An action masterpiece newly remastered in gorgeous 4K (and rejiggered for superfluous 3D) reveals how fresh it remains not only technically but thematically. I’m “biast” (pro): love this movie, have seen it a dozen times at least
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

August 29th? It’s Judgment Day! Or at least it would have been, 20 years ago in 1997, if not for the brave actions of mental patient Sarah Connor, her juvenile delinquent son John, and a reprogrammed T-800 killing machine sent back from the future, who didn’t even have a name, poor thing. To commemorate their selfless work, Terminator 2: Judgment Day has been newly remastered in gorgeous 4K, and also rejiggered for 3D, which is entirely superfluous: it adds nothing to the film, but at least it doesn’t detract from it...

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Jeremy Renner, who stars in Taylor Sheridan’s indie hit western “Wind River” with fellow-Avenger Elizabeth Olsen.
Bottom Line: Renner has built his movie stardom and used it to smart advantage, ranging from archer Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to throwing banter with Simon Pegg in “Mission: Impossible.” Those movies make it possible for him to be a magician in love with a Frenchwoman (Marion Cotillard) in James Gray’s “The Immigrant,” or the pompadoured Camden, New Jersey Mayor Carmen Polito in David O. Russell’s “American Hustle.”
Career Peaks: Renner had been a working actor for 13 years, supporting himself with construction and house-flipping (and roles as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and zombie killer in Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later”) when he broke out at age 37 as the fearless,...
