Casual moviegoers might be familiar with Denis Villeneuve for the Dune franchise, but the filmmaker has long been lauded for his depth, precision, and casting decisions in some of the most acclaimed works. Take, for example, Emily Blunt in the 2015 action thriller Sicario, where her portrayal of a determined FBI agent captivated audiences with the balancing between fierceness and fragility.
Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. | image: Film at Lincoln Center.
According to Denis Villeneuve, he saw right through Emily Blunt’s ability to strike a balance between her femininity and brutality, after watching her previous works. And this particular skill is what landed her the iconic role. But while Villeneuve’s praise of Blunt’s femininity served her performance in Sicario, it might have led to an unexpected consequence to her role as Black Widow, had she landed it.

Emma MacKay is set to star alongside Glen Powell (The Running Man) and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) in the new mystery box movie from J.J. Abrams. The actress is best known for starring in Netflix’s Sex Education, which wrapped up its four-season run last year.
Plot details are being kept under wraps (big surprise). It was previously speculated that the film would involve time travel, but sources have said that’s not the case. Damn you, mystery box! The project is expected to kick off production next year with Abrams directing from a script he wrote. He will also produce through his Bad Robot banner. Emma Mackey is getting put in a mystery box.
The “Sex Education” and “Barbie” breakout is joining Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in lead roles in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Warner Bros. feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Details of Abrams’ first film since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” are being kept mysterious — all we really know about it is that it won’t involve time travel. It will be the box-office-dominating writer-director-producer’s first film not based on I.P. since 2011’s “Super 8.” Abrams’ company Bad Robot is producing.
Mackey is a rising star who made her debut in Netflix’s comedy series “Sex Education” in 2019. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her performance as entrepreneurial high school student Maeve Wiley in the hit series. She also appeared in “Barbie,” the biggest film of 2023, as Physicist Barbie, a role that played up her physical resemblance to Margot Robbie.

British actress Emma Mackey (“Barbie”) has landed the female lead opposite Glen Powell in J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming, untitled Warner Bros. movie.
Details about both Mackey’s role and the project in general are being kept under wraps. The film also stars Jenna Ortega.
Not much is known about Abrams’ new film except that it is not a time travel movie (as had been previously speculated) and that Abrams both wrote the script and will be directing. The project will be produced by Abrams and his production company Bad Robot.
Mackey, who first broke out with her role as Maeve Wiley on Netflix’s “Sex Education,” most recently starred in Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-winning “Barbie.” She is also the 2023 recipient of BAFTA’s Rising Star Award,
Other credits include playing famed novelist and poet Emily Brontë in Frances O’Connor’s Warner Bros drama “Emily,” and Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile.

Emma Mackey, the British actress best known for her work in Netflix’s Sex Education, has nabbed the female lead in J.J. Abrams’ untitled feature at Warner Bros.
The actress, who appeared as a Barbie in the studio’s billion-dollar grossing Barbie last year, will now join Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in what is described as being a trifecta of leads.
Abrams wrote the script for the feature, whose logline and description is being kept in the mystery box. At one point it was speculated to involve time travel, but sources say that is not the case.

Netflix’s decision to break up some of its scripted shows can translate to more series views even with less total time spent on some shows.
Season four of Netflix’s YA drama Outer Banks debuted at the top of the streamer’s TV charts for the week of Oct. 7, racking up 62.3 million hours of viewing worldwide. It was a strong showing — particularly considering it was only for half a season, in keeping with Netflix’s strategy of splitting some of its more popular scripted shows into two parts and releasing them about a month apart.
Here’s the rub, though: That 62.3 million hours of viewing for Outer Banks was about 60 percent less than the opening week for season three, which had just under 155 million hours for a full-season binge release. A similar pattern holds across several popular Netflix series whose most recent seasons were split into multiple parts: Fewer...

When Netflix launched as a streaming platform, one of the most thrilling innovations was making whole TV seasons available at once. At first, these were older shows that had already aired in the traditional fashion, and had been licensed from the studios that produced them. But when Netflix started making its own original series, those would also premiere every episode of a new season simultaneously — waiting a week for your story to continue was a relic of the 20th century!
Soon, however, the downside of having super-users marathon six or 10 or 13 episodes in a weekend became clear: Publicity and social media buzz around a new title quickly burned itself out, and both high- and low-quality shows turned into an undifferentiated mass of content, constantly achurn. In more recent years, Netflix tried to put the content toothpaste back in the tube, slowing down the episode drops for select titles — a few...

Charm drips from every single frame of Melanie Laurent’s 2024 film, Freedom (or Libre in Spanish). Most of the credit for that goes to its lead star, Lucas Bravo of Emily in Paris fame. I am unfamiliar with the Netflix show, but if this movie is anything to go by, the guy is a proper movie star, having both the looks to bring the house down and acting chops to keep you glued to your seat. Laurent has mounted Freedom in a very hyper-stylized manner, that it almost feels like watching a James Bond movie from back in the day. Except Bond is the suave criminal here, and this is a true story. Bruno Sulak, on whom Freedom is based, used to be known as the ‘gentleman robber’ for always maintaining a non-violent approach. We’re going to look into the true story before discussing Freedom‘s ending.

Lucas Bravo is getting candid about his thoughts on the direction his Emily in Paris character, Gabriel, is going.
The actor previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he was hoping for some growth for Gabriel in season five of the Netflix series because “he made a few choices that made me kind of grow away from him. We were very much alike in season one, but now, I don’t really know. I think I feel like he needs to get his shit together.”
In a more recent conversation with IndieWire tied to his upcoming film Freedom from Mélanie Laurent, the Ticket to Paradise actor expanded on that sentiment, explaining that he isn’t very proud of the choices the “sexy chef” has been making.

It might be au revoir to Emily in Paris for Lucas Bravo. The 36-year-old French actor is over the “lack of communication” keeping his character, Gabriel, and Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) apart. So much, in fact, that he’s ready for acting jobs outside the Netflix original series as Gabriel and Emily’s “archaic” storyline continues.
Gabriel and Emily’s ‘lack of communication’ is dated to Lucas Bravo
Bravo didn’t hold back in an interview with French publication Le Figaro. The Emily in Paris star, who has played Gabriel since the show began in 2020, shared his frustration about Emily and Gabriel’s romance in season 4, which hit Netflix in August 2024.
“Everything is based on a lack of communication,” he told the publication (via The Independent). Remember when Gabriel ditched skiing newbie Emily on the slopes? Or when he argued with her in French as she stood by unsure of what he said?...

Lucas Bravo is questioning how much freedom he has on “Emily in Paris” – and whether or not he wants to return to the hit Netflix series for its fifth season.
Bravo told IndieWire while promoting Mélanie Laurent’s true crime film “Freedom” that while he is indebted to “Emily in Paris” for marking his breakout role as chef Gabriel, he thinks his character has been “slowly turned into guacamole.”
And the food parallels don’t stop there: According to Bravo, the Lily Collins-led show has become rife with narrative “souffles,” or a “lack of risk” with the character arcs. In turn, Bravo doesn’t recognize both the show and the character he first signed up to play.
“The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take.

As Emily in Paris fans know and have been anxiously awaiting, the hit Netflix original romantic comedy series was renewed for season 5 back in September. The renewal arrived not long after the season 4 finale, which perfectly set up the next season with Emily's new life in Rome with Marcello and her old life in Paris with Gabriel trying to get her back.
Well, Emily potentially won't have to worry about being wooed by her recent past in season 5 based on an new interview from Gabriel actor Lucas Bravo. While promoting his new movie Libre, Bravo spoke with the French publication Figaro TV Magazine and expressed his newfound disinterest in his role on Emily in Paris. Will he leave the show?
Nothing's official regarding a possible departure from the series, but the actor's latest interview paints a pretty obvious picture about where he stands with the Netflix series that helped launch his career.

Based on the game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow, the French Netflix Original Family Pack is a comedy of errors time travel film that surprisingly has a lot of heart to it. I suppose you could say the same about Jumanji, a film that certainly feels like it inspired this one, but because of one thing only, people play a game and then get transported to a different time. Family Pack follows Jerome and his family, a mixed bag of chips, who are all uninterested in this game he wants to play. Still, Jerome hands out the cards to his family members in the hope that they can actually do something together for once, but his father, who has Alzheimer’s, doesn’t remember the rules that Jerome was expecting him to, so the family doesn’t really get to play. When Jerome puts the cards back and shuts the wooden game board,...

Netflix expects its programming slate to return to close to normalcy in 2025, after saying its 2024 slate was “patchier than normal” due to the Hollywood strikes.
Speaking on Netflix’s third-quarter earnings call, co-ceo Ted Sarandos said some of its popular shows including Cobra Kai and Emily in Paris as well as newer shows such as Perfect Couple and Nobody Wants This were initially scheduled to air “much earlier in the year” but were delayed due to impacts from the strike.
“The first half of this year, our lineup was much lumpier than we liked and that was primarily because of the work stoppage,” Sarandos said. “It did hit [the U.S., Canada and Australia] the hardest, but there were some effects of that felt in production around the world.”
The company is now moving closer to a “more normalized output schedule,” with television series more on track than film, Sarandos said, but neither area is yet fully recovered.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he would fight to make sure Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris returns to France after the season ended with Emily in Rome.

In the fourth season of the series, Emily, played by actress Lily Collins, left behind the City of Lights for the Eternal City.

The top two streaming titles from the first week of September held their spots in the second week — and both improved on their debut showings.
Netflix’s limited series The Perfect Couple and its movie Rebel Ridge ranked first and second overall on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of Sept. 9-15, just as they did over the prior seven days. The Perfect Couple drew 1.97 billion minutes of viewing time (up a bit from 1.91 bilion), and Rebel Ridge grew to 1.28 billion minutes from 1.11 billion for its premiere week.
Also showing significant growth: Hulu’s unscripted show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, which improved by 78 percent week to week and broke into the overall top 10 with 729 million minutes of viewing. Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (747 million minutes) fell off some after two weeks over 1 billion minutes. Emily in Paris (708 million) moved back...

More adaptations of Elin Hildebrand’s addictive beach reads are seemingly on their way, which spells good news for fans of the delectable six-episode Netflix adaptation of her murder mystery The Perfect Couple.
Since landing on Netflix on September 5, The Perfect Couple has exceeded expectations, not only racking up sizable viewership on the streamer but also going viral on social media for its wacky, tonally different opening credit dance sequence.
The series tallied 10.4M views in its second full week on the streamer from September 16 to 22, coming in second place among TV, bested only by Ryan Murphy’s true crime drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which launched last Wednesday. It even beat Season 4B of Emily in Paris, which had its first full week of availability. That’s after it easily stole the top spot on the last two lists, accumulating more than 20M views in its debut weekend.

Darren Star certainly knows how to keep fans of his shows on edge, and that is precisely what’s being done with Netflix’s Emily in Paris. This show has successfully run the romance, drama/comedy scene for four incredible seasons. While there is no official confirmation on Season 5, fans are concerned with how the storyline capped off during its latest season.

Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, is an American hired by a marketing firm in Paris to provide them with her expertise. However, the character also goes through a series of learning curves, life experiences, and a lot more in the mix. And obviously, why create a television show without a touch of romance in it? But that’s where Darren Star tends to mess it all up.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot details for Season 4, Part 2 of “Emily in Paris.”
Good-bye, Emily in Paris. Hello, Emily in…Rome?
Fans of the frothy comedy “Emily in Paris” may have been shocked by the ending of Season 4, Part 2, which dropped on Netflix this week. In the season finale, Emily (Lily Collins) is assigned by her boss Sylvie Grateau (Philippine LeRoy-Beaulieu) to start a new office in Rome, where a sexy new client –– not to mention a sexy new man, Marcello Muratori (Eugenio Franceschini) –– eagerly await her presence.
On one hand, it’s a step up for Emily: She’s being promoted to manage her very own office in one of the most romantic cities in the world. On the other hand, she’s leaving behind her friends, primary love interest Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and, in some sense, her viewers. By deploying that plot twist, “Emily in Paris” is indicating that the show,...

The Netflix series Emily in Paris has captivated audiences with its blend of romance, fashion, and French flair. In its fourth season, the series introduced a new character that left viewers intrigued. Genevieve, stepdaughter to Sylvie and newcomer at Agence Grateau, took the fans for a ride with her mysterious and possibly evil character.
Thalia Besson, the actress behind the character, is not a new face in the industry. Born to French director Luc Besson and producer Virginie Besson-Silla, the actress is what we call a ‘nepo baby’. Her parents had previously collaborated in Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy while her father worked on Bruce Willis’s The Fifth Element. Both the movies were huge hits but not the only scores under their belts.
Family Affair: The Besson legacy in film and TV
Thalia Besson is gaining recognition for her role as Genevieve, the potential new antagonist in season four part 2 of Emily in Paris.

Warning: Spoilers ahead from Emily in Paris season 4 part 2.
Both parts of Emily in Paris season 4 brought a lot of changes into Emily's life and where the series could go in the future. She begins the season in the midst of a love triangle — or square, if we're being technical — that had blown up in her face. But by the end of the 10 episodes, she's in a relationship with someone totally new and moving to a completely different European city.
In many ways, Emily in Paris has grown and evolved with its excellent fourth season, and that growth has honestly left a few of its characters in the dust. Two specific characters have essentially become plot devices, and that's more obvious than ever in season 4. Unfortunately, Emily in Paris has progressed past the need for Alfie and Camille, who have overstayed their welcome.

American marketing executive Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) has been in the City of Lights for almost a year in Season 4 of Emily in Paris, and what started out as a fun adventure is getting pretty real. Season 4 “just feels like an evolution of her character,” creator Darren Star tells Tudum. “Characters can’t stay static. I feel like she has been growing and evolving, and this season she’s more confident, but also we dig a little bit more below the surface of some of the relationships. And so they get a little messier and more emotional.”
The moody nature of this season plays out visually through the glimpses we get of Paris in the wintertime, but also on-screen via tumultuous relationship upheavals experienced by nearly all of our favorite characters. Emily and Alfie () work out their differences following the , but then immediately break up because they know...
