Ridley Scott made history with his 1979 film sci-fi film Alien which set off a chain reaction. Other filmmakers tried to follow in his footsteps to create another masterpiece that could rival or even stand up to the original. Alas, the follow-ups only further proved the Gladiator director’s genius, which others couldn’t replicate.
However, things changed when the Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez took up the task. Alien: Romulus was a refreshing sci-fi venture that many believed was the best-reviewed film from the franchise, except for the first one. The movie’s success almost guaranteed a sequel, but fans are apprehensive about its fate. Although the director is cautious in his approach viewers have some stipulations for the potential follow-up.

Alien: Romulus was a success at the box office while also proving to be a big hit with critics, and 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell recently confirmed that early plans are in pace for a sequel.
Director Fede Álvarez has now indicated that he is in talks to return, while explaining why he's hesitant to move forward until they have a story worth telling.
"Well, I mean, we definitely want to do it," the Don't Breathe director tells Gizmodo. "The studio wants to do it. I want to do it. I think with sequels, it’s always about finding the right story. Me and Rodo [Sayagues], my co-writer, we have some ideas, but it’s not until we find something that we go 'Ok, that is a movie worth making' that we really embark on it. Alien: Romulus was a big hit for sci-fi/horror genre this summer when it grossed $350.9 million worldwide and received positive reviews. The movie sits on 7.2 IMDb score and 80% / 85% (critics/audience) Rotten Tomatoes score.
Alien: Romulus can now be watched on Hulu and digitally, and it is set for physical release soon. In the meantime, director Fede Alvarez discussed the physical release, a potential sequel, and other projects he would like to do in this genre.
Cheryl Eddy: What are your thoughts on Alien: Romulus being the first VHS released by Disney in nearly 30 years?
Fede Alvarez: Well, it was my idea, so I’m really excited by it. It all started when we released that scene and a trailer on VHS. That was partly because I didn’t want to release a scene too soon. I didn’t want to spoil a moment of the movie too early on the promotion side.

Return to Oz was a wild mess for Disney, but not the last time they’d use the Oz property!
Given what a disaster the production of Return to Oz was and how it ended up being a box office flop, it’s no shock that Disney was very wary of ever using the property again. Despite still owning the rights, Disney didn’t focus on Oz at all, even as other studios had various projects, from Syfy’s modernized fantasy Tin Man to NBC trying to make it a dark fantasy epic with Emerald City to Wicked becoming a smash Broadway hit.
As it happened, Oz would collide with another Disney property in a rather unique way, although not the success hoped for.

Few cinematic characters have left as big of an impression as Ellen Ripley, Sigourney Weaver’s iconic “Alien” survivor, who led four films in the franchise and left behind some massive shoes to fill for everyone who’s come since. In “Alien: Romulus,” that’s a young cast of franchise newcomers, led by “Priscilla” and “Civil War” star Cailee Spaeny.
Directed by “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” filmmaker Fede Álvarez, the latest installment heads back between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” introducing a young group of friends desperate to escape their grungy mining colony. You will, of course, recognize the Xenomorph — H.R. Giger’s inimitable alien creature — but for everyone else, here’s a handy guide to the “Alien: Romulus” cast and characters.

A few years ago, Spooky Pinball LLC created a pinball machine inspired by John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween, and a while back they also built a Texas Chainsaw Massacre pinball machine, inspired by Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic. Now, they’re continuing their journey through some of the greatest horror movies ever made, as they’ve revealed that their latest pinball machine is inspired by Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise!
Here’s the information: Evil Dead Pinball is a wide body pinball machine set in the world of the first two films of the iconic franchise, The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn. The players will be guided along by Ash Williams, voiced by Bruce Campbell, as they battle the relentless forces of evil. Alien: Romulus (Fede Alvarez)
It’s a dire, inhospitable environment, wherein corporate interests can give way to ghoulish monstrosities, and those just trying to navigate the chokehold of capitalism are doing their best to survive. In a way, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus may be the most meta Alien film to date. No stranger to playing in others’ sandboxes, the Evil Dead helmer is, at first glance, an encouraging fit for the sci-fi horror franchise. Like the original, 2017’s Alien: Covenant––an underrated high point for these films––was at its peak when threading its headier notions with gleefully mean-spirited cynicism towards its human subjects. Alvarez has that same kind of nasty streak in him, and much of Romulus’ mandated fan service...

In the wild world of horror-comedy, Joseph Kahn’s “Ick” emerges as a gonzo fever dream, combining the alien invasion genre with 2000s Nostalgia, social satire, and pure cinematic mayhem. Set in the seemingly peaceful town of Eastbrook, the film follows Hank Wallace, a former high school football star whose aspirations of NFL greatness were dashed by an injury and the strange advent of a peculiar alien slime known simply as “the Ick.”
Hank, now a physics teacher at his alma mater, is tormented by his past and increasingly preoccupied with the odd chemical slowly spreading across the United States for the past 20 years. Brandon Routh provides a great blend of square-jawed heroics and self-deprecating comedy to the role, channeling the spirit of Bruce Campbell from “Evil Dead” while drawing on his own Hollywood path from Superman to this deliriously crazy character.

Musician Brian Eno once claimed that the limitations of a medium are exactly what people will miss about it once those limitations are gone. That’s probably why so many modern horror titles opt to embrace styles and mechanics that were once criticized for being cheap and obtuse (like low-poly graphics and tank controls). If you ask me, I’d also argue that this is why we’ve seen a resurgence in movie tie-in games despite licensed productions once being considered the scourge of the video game industry.
And in honor of recent releases like RetroRealms Arcade (which is actually way more enjoyable than most of the licensed titles it’s trying to emulate), we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six retro horror movie tie-in games that time forgot. After all, from the Commodore 64 to the Atari 2600, there are plenty of old video games that benefit from some spooky source material.

Though we have very little to go on, legendary director Sir Ridley Scott has revealed that he is developing a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios.
Details are pretty much non-existent right now, but THR's report indicates that this will be a completely separate project to the Alien: Romulus sequel that's currently in the works.
20th Century's Steve Asbell recently confirmed that director Fede Alvarez is in talks to helm a direct sequel to Romulus that would continue the journey of the survivors of the previous movie, Rain Carradine and her android brother, Andy.
"We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like,...

One lesser known but extremely cool horror series that’s worth revisiting is the Maniac Cop franchise. Directed by William Lustig and scripted by Larry Cohen, the Maniac Cop trilogy got off to a great start in 1988 with a film that stars Tom Atkins, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, Laurene Landon, and Evil Dead franchise hero Bruce Campbell, with Robert Z’Dar as the title character. Although Campbell emerges as the hero in the first film, he’s killed off early in 1990’s Maniac Cop 2 – which, despite losing Campbell so quickly, still manages to be one of the best horror sequels out there. Things don’t get questionable until 1993’s troubled Maniac Cop 3. But even though the first two movies are awesome, Campbell doesn’t seem to have the fondest memories of them, as he revealed during a recent interview with Variety.

Alien: Romulus Director Fede Álvarez In Talks To Helm Sequel; New Predator Movie Also In Development
Two classic sci-fi horror franchises were recently given new leases of life, with the Predator returning to hunt his Prey in Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 movie, and the Xenomorphs back to their chest-bursting best in this year's Alien: Romulus.
Both films were critically-acclaimed and very popular with audiences, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to learn that Disney-owned 20th Century Studios is planning more instalments.
We already knew that a Prey spin-off titled Badlands was in the works, but 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell has now revealed that a "secret" Predator movie will also be with us next year that will also be helmed by Trachtenberg. Badlands will be a theatrical release, but it sounds like this other film will be going straight to streaming.

2020’s Covid-19 pandemic was a weird, isolating time, particularly for filmmakers and natural storytellers. Joe Begos’ Jimmy and Stiggs isn’t about the pandemic or even set during that period, but it’s a movie that was born out of this event and is very much in conversation with this challenging, reflective, isolating time. And it’s DIY horror at its finest.
Begos has always been an incredibly hands-on filmmaker who completely immerses himself in his productions. However, his level of involvement in Jimmy and Stiggs reaches new heights. Begos writes, directs, serves as production designer, and even stars in the movie, which makes Jimmy and Stiggs an especially intimate and personal project for him. ‘Hysteria!’ Stars Julie Bowen and Bruce Campbell Debate the ‘Horror and the Beauty’ of Satanic Panic
Julie Bowen and Bruce Campbell star as, respectively, a suburban mom and a seen-it-all cop in Peacock’s “Hysteria!,” which turns the very real Satanic Panic of the ’80s into a rollicking, heavy-metal flavored comedy about demons.
The two actors, who already lived through the 1980s, had very different experiences during the era. Bowen told TheWrap she grew up in a conservative family and was afraid of supposedly Satanic things like hard rock and Dungeons and Dragons. Interestingly, Campbell, who became a chainsaw-wielding horror icon in Sam Raimi’s 1981 indie “Evil Dead,” didn’t like heavy metal music either — or most of the decade, for that matter.
TheWrap spoke with both stars about revisiting the time period and how they’ve been pitching the show to their friends and family.

Bruce Campbell is mostly known for leading the “Evil Dead” franchise (and for popping up in every Sam Raimi movie since), a role that has proven to be both blessing and curse.
The actor, who now appears in Peacock series “Hysteria!,” told The New York Times that while the “Evil Dead” films and subsequent series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” propelled him to stardom, the franchise’s fans can make him feel a bit boxed in.
“I have nothing but love for the franchise. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. It got me into the business,” Campbell said, adding, “I’m more constricted by fans than the industry.”
Campbell continued, “They’re not going to watch ‘Burn Notice’ because spy shows aren’t their bag. And the guys who watch ‘Burn Notice,’ they’re not necessarily horror fans. You’re going to know me from what you’ve watched me in.

Campbell continued, “They’re not going to watch ‘Burn Notice’ because spy shows aren’t their bag. And the guys who watch ‘Burn Notice,’ they’re not necessarily horror fans. You’re going to know me from what you’ve watched me in.

After playing Evil Dead franchise hero Ash Williams on screen for around forty years, spanning three feature films and three seasons of the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell formally retired from the role, saying he’s not physically able to handle the action sequences any longer. But he is still willing to voice the character, as evident from Evil Dead: The Game… and a while back, he said would gladly provide Ash’s voice if there were ever to be an Evil Dead animated series. Franchise creator Sam Raimi has let it be known that he wants to continue making Evil Dead projects with Campbell, and he must have heard Campbell’s answer to the animated series question, because Campbell said more than a year and a half ago that they were actively pursuing the idea. Now, during an interview with ComicBook.com, Campbell has confirmed that an...

The Evil Dead movies remain some of the greatest cult horror flicks ever. And a lot of that has to do with its star, Bruce Campbell. Yet, while he has remained a staple in the horror genre for decades now, Bruce Campbell is now aiming his boomstick right at it.
Speaking with the New York Post, Bruce Campbell said he doesn’t get as much enjoyment out of horror flicks as you might expect, although the right ones will trigger a reaction that is unmatched on the big screen. “I am not a huge fan of it myself. But what I like is that it’s one of the few genres that gets a visceral reaction from the crowd. Someone watches a drama, they’re eating popcorn, their face isn’t changing – maybe a couple of tears. Horror movies, they’re jumping out of their seats. You want the popcorn to go airborne,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

I want to say I had my fair share of teen horror growing up, but it wouldn’t be true, because as I’m writing this, I can’t think of a single show that fits the category. I don’t know if Pretty Little Liars really counts, but my first encounter with a “horror” show outside of the Indian Shh! Koi Hai or Aahat, which first aired a year before I was born (dang), was Supernatural, which in my opinion was technically for adults. Then would it be ironic for me to say horror is my favorite genre? I wouldn’t think so. Now, don’t get me wrong, there will be those who gate-keep the genre for people who’ve only seen the “classics,” which, for the most part, I haven’t. However, this doesn’t take away from my experiences of loving the genre growing up and...

What are you looking for in a sequel? Dependable familiarity or narrative evolutions? Parker Finn's Smile 2 is a sharper, meaner, and despicably addictive amplification of Smile that doesn’t tamper with what works. Finn's execution of trauma-driven haunts is an upgrade across the board, albeit recognizable. It's funnier, flashier, scarier, and doesn't feign complacency even for a millisecond. Smile 2 is an invigoration of exposed demonic templates (typed by someone lukewarm on Finn's successful original). Move over, Lady Raven; Skye Riley's taking center stage.

Combining the nostalgia of the arcade and the local video store, RetroRealms‘ first release delivers two horror classics, Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead, in the form of 2D beat ‘em up platformers. Both franchises are brought to life with a beautiful 16-bit pixel art style that creates an enticing package that’s full of reverence for the source material.
RetroRealms itself is a hub that you add games to as Dlc, and these are the first two releases for the platform. When you launch it, you’re placed in an arcade, which you traverse in first person, where you can interact with the machines you’ve purchased, as well as various extras that you unlock throughout play. Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead play pretty similarly, both featuring a combination of combat and platforming from a side scrolling perspective.

Fede Álvarez's franchise revival, Alien: Romulus, was a big hit at the box office, so we wouldn't be at all surprised if the Don't Breathe director was already in talks to helm a sequel.
If you happened to miss the movie on the big screen, Romulus is now available to purchase on Digital platforms, and Fandango has officially released an extended preview spotlighting what might be the most intense few minutes of the movie.
In the clip, we see Rain Carradine and her makeshift crew arrive at the seemingly abandoned and decommissioned Remus space station to salvage some fuel for their journey to a more hospitable planet.
Unfortunately, they soon find out that dozens of face-huggers were in the process of being transported in stasis, and are released when Andy tries to access the ship's computer.

One of a clutch of alluring films at this year’s Grimmfest, I was hopeful that Beezel would stand as a reminder that sometimes, the simplest stories can be the most effective. Directed by Aaron Fradkin, the film plunges us into a traditional, no-nonsense horror experience that channels the raw, blood-soaked thrills of old-school genre classics.
Drawing subtle comparisons to Evil Dead and its cellar-dwelling Deadites, Beezel manages to deliver a deeply unsettling tale with a fresh twist on the haunted house narrative, while sidestepping the trend of over-complicating its premise.
Fradkin, who co-wrote the film with Victoria Fratz, smartly dials into the staple primal fears that keep audiences glued to their seats: the fear of the unknown, the hidden dangers beneath the floorboards, and the sense that something truly evil is lurking just out of sight. What’s fascinating about Beezel is how it taps into this unease, immersing...

This article contains spoilers for "Agatha All Along" episode 5, "Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power."
Each episode of "Agatha All Along" — the newest Marvel series on Disney+ that is Good, Actually despite the crybaby "fans" claiming otherwise — has played out like Marvel trying its hand at making escape rooms. As Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and her coven make their way down The Witches' Road, each witch must be tested on their unique abilities in a house that changes the world's appearance depending on who is being tested. Episode 3 featured potions expert Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) tested in an opulent suburban McMansion like something out of "Big Little Lies," while the protector witch Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn) broke the generational curse of her rockstar mother in a live music performance resembling a cross between "Daisy Jones and the Six" and the legendary Stevie Nicks. When Sam Raimi signed on to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it was pretty much a given that he was going to give his longtime friend and Evil Dead franchise star Bruce Campbell a cameo somewhere in the film, just like he had Campbell appear in each one of the Spider-Man movies he directed.. Sure enough, Campbell showed up in the Doctor Strange movie as a character called Pizza Poppa – and in interviews given since then, Campbell has stated that not only his Pizza Poppa a variant of his Spider-Man character(s), but he also has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Over a year after the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Campbell told ComicBook.com, “The cameos are like, in the Spider-Man movies — if you know anything about the multiverse, you know now, retroactively, I’m in the multiverse now because of Doctor Strange.

In the history of movie sequels, few second installments have pulled off a total tonal shift better than Evil Dead II, and none were nearly as groovy.
Even before Sam Raimi’s self-serious indie horror classic Evil Dead became one of 1981’s biggest sleeper hits, the emerging screenwriter and director already knew he wanted to turn the film into a full-on franchise. At the urging of his publicist Irvin Shapiro, Raimi started planning the plot lines for future Evil Dead films while he was still making the first installment on a shoestring budget, but it would take Raimi and his team all the way until 1985 to finally secure the funding for what would become Evil Dead II, by which time Raimi, his co-writer Scott Spiegel and his star/co-producer Bruce Campbell already had a pretty good idea for how to continue the story of Michigan State’s most traumatized student Ash Williams.

Do you like blood? Violence? Freaks of nature? Well, here at Arrow in the Head, we love all of those things – and that has inspired us to put together this list of some of The Goriest, Bloodiest Films Ever Made. Some of the movies are on here due to their historical significance, some are due to the amount of fake blood that was used during the production, and all of them are quite messy. Here we go:
Blood Feast (1963)
This is where it all began. In the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, independent filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis and his producing partner David F. Friedman were looking at the major movies of the day to find what they could offer the moviegoing public that the studios weren’t providing. They started out with “nudie cutie” sexploitation movies, meeting the demand for bare flesh. After taking note that violence in movies had...

To celebrate the release of the ground-breaking and gruesome horror In a Violent Nature – out now on Digital and available on Blu-ray & DVD from 30th September – we have a Blu-ray up for grabs!

With In a Violent Nature, Nash has fashioned something truly extraordinary – a film that manages to be brilliantly original while at the same time paying homage to ‘80s horror classics like the Friday the 13th series and Evil Dead, as a group of young campers are mercilessly stalked in the woods. Anybody down for a Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness reunion? No, we've not got confirmation of a Doctor Strange 3 directed by Sam Raimi just yet (although we do live in hope) — but we are getting word that one of the stars of the Evil Dead director's first foray into the MCU could be about to team up on a new horror thriller. According to Deadline, Rachel McAdams is circling a starring role in Send Help, a 20th Century Studios chiller on which Raimi will serve as both producer and director.
As we reported back in July, Send Help — based on an original script from Baywatch writing duo Damian Shannon and Mark Swift — is currently being pitched as an island-set two-hander that falls somewhere between Rob Reiner's Misery and Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away. Further details on the plot however remain strictly under wraps at this point in time,...

Rachel McAdams is set to reunite with Sam Raimi on his return to the horror genre for the upcoming film Send Help. More here.
At the tail-end of last week, news emerged that stated Sam Raimi had signed a deal to once again work with Marvel Studios, taking on the director’s chair for Doctor Strange 3. As you’ll know, the Evil Dead director made the most recent entry in the series, 2022’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness and the film – while very much suffering from typical MCU issues – went on to earn almost a billion dollars at the global box office in an era when that financial benchmark is far from guaranteed.
Rachel McAdams co-starred – and will presumably pop up in the threequel, we’d imagine. However, it looks like Raimi has more plans for the actor, given that The Insneider is reporting that Raimi has cast...

Rebooting classic horror movies has almost always invited extremely divisive reception, ranging from being appreciated like the Evil Dead reboots to getting hated on like the Halloween sequels. As a seminal piece of horror media, Salem’s Lot‘s TV series adaptation is still held in great regard, and as the recently released cinematic adaptation of the novel is streaming on Max, a comparative discussion involving these two ventures is inevitable. While the movie doesn’t hold a candle to the series, for better or worse, it follows the novel more closely. Both the adaptations take certain liberties when it comes to a number of crucial moments in the narrative, which either works or doesn’t, depending on the perspective of the viewers.

Rachel McAdams is in talks to star in Sam Raimi’s Send Help, the horror-thriller from 20th Century Studios, which he is producing and directing.

We've been hearing that Marvel Studios was in the process of developing a third Doctor Strange movie for quite some time, and it sounds like the project has now settled on a director.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Jeff Sneider reports that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi has "all-but closed a deal" to return to helm the threequel.
In the Multiverse of Madness was met with pretty good reviews (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), and while it did prove to be somewhat divisive among MCU fans, it went on to take in over $950 million worldwide, meaning a third film was always a strong possibility.
Previous reports have claimed that Kevin Feige was eager to work with Raimi again, and the Evil Dead filmmaker was rumored to be the studio's top choice to direct Avengers: Secret Wars at one point.
Plot details for Doctor Strange 3 are still a mystery,...

This post contains spoilers for "Agatha All Along" (as well as FX's "Legion").
In a series full of fun, intriguing, and camp-infused performances, Aubrey Plaza stands out as the most delightfully unpredictable member of the "Agatha All Along" ensemble. Her character is Rio Vidal, otherwise known as the black heart on Agatha's (Kathryn Hahn) list and the green witch in her coven. Her purpose so far seems to be to annoy and turn Agatha on in equal measure, all the while threatening to derail the entire expedition down the Witches' Road with her rather mercenary predisposition. Her strategy, thanks to Plaza's super-game performance, is to be equal parts weird, sexy, and borderline inhuman, and to revel in the discomfort her attractive monstrousness inspires in all the other witches.
Take, for example, the scene at the beginning of episode 4, when the coven summons Rio. While they're waiting in...
