We're back with CIA treetrunk JJ and his little girl Sophie. Stuff happens that means they have to go to Italy, and so the movie can happen they get mixed up in a dastardly plot. Bwah ha ha and all that.
This sequel hits all the beats you'd expect, with decent action and enough laughs to keep you watching. It's full of clichés, like a bad guy pausing before striking a fatal blow then being taken out by a third party, or the hero looking beaten but suddenly becoming invincible when the bad guy gets them angry.
The acting is OK, with the two leads slipping easily back into their characters aided by nice turns from Ken Jeong and Kristen Schaal.

The first movie was so fresh and funny!! The second however was not. It's kinda sad to see how horrible Sophie and JJ get along this time, like what the frick happened to thier relationship why is she such a horrible person in this one. The jokes are not as funny and the action isn't as cool. For me is was just very very hard to watch all of the fighting knowing how much love wes in the last one. Also the plot holes are so bad💀💀💀💀💀💀. Also omg it's kinda copying the movie spiderman far from home...school field trip goes wrong in Italy and then fighting/action movie stuff. The one bright spot is flula borg (I love that man-he is hilarious.)

It has its moments, but in the end becomes forgettable. JJ was a field operative for the CIA, but now sits behind the desk as an analyst. He looks after Sophie, although he is not her dad, and she has a chance to sing in the school choir at the Vatican. He winds up as a chaperone. But considering he survived five tours of duty as an Army Ranger, he figures he can survive being a chaperone for a choir tour. Oops! So off they all go to Italy. This is some gentle and family oriented humor, but then the dangerous plot develops, and that is the rest of the movie. There are some real wicked moments of humor, but some of the scenes just go on far too long, plus the scenario isn't realistic. It seems as if the movie bogs down a bit. It is really tailored for a younger movie goer who wants entertainment and not asking questions.
"My Spy: The Eternal City" reunites us with the unlikely duo of hardened CIA agent JJ (Dave Bautista) and whip-smart Sophie (Chloe Coleman), this time amidst the romantic of Rome. While the film delivers laughs and a charming central relationship, it struggles to recapture the magic of the original.
The chemistry between Bautista and Coleman remains a highlight. Their banter is effortless, and their bond feels genuine. Witnessing their dynamic evolve as Sophie enters her teenage years adds a relatable layer to their interactions.
The action sequences are well-choreographed and exciting, taking full advantage of the Italian setting. The plot, however, feels a bit formulaic, relying on familiar spy tropes without offering much innovation.
One of the biggest drawbacks is the tonal shift. The humor, while still present, has a cruder edge compared to the first film. This might alienate younger viewers who enjoyed the family-friendly vibe of the original.
Ultimately, "My Spy: The Eternal City" is a perfectly enjoyable summer flick. It provides laughs, action, and a heartwarming central relationship. However, when compared to its predecessor, it feels like a step down.

Honestly, what I enjoyed the most were the parts of the soundtrack that featured the La Cañada High School Chamber Singers. Their sound was impeccable and the 3 songs fit the (supposed) venue of the Vatican, although the recordings had obviously been made under indoor conditions with a professional sound set up, maybe in a recording studio.
The plot was essentially all the expected tropes, and the dialogue was boring. We watched the typical car crashes. Is that what they spend the budget on? Buying up the vehicles they need for the chase scenes? Oh, well. It kept my occupied while I ate my pizza.

The first movie ends with the characters having respect for each other and yet this one starts with Sophie being the overdone teen. Why do so many sequels have to reset any character development that happened in the prior movie? And why are so many characters in movies now one dimensional?
The first movie had charm, humor and likable characters. This one seems to be missing those. A lot of the performances feel like they are cold reading the lines rather than shooting the actual movie.
I'm curious how many of the positive reviews are from people that spent much of the movie looking at their phone. It may not be a bad 'background' movie.

I hadn't seen the first My Spy movie, wasn't sure what to expect - and was pleasantly surprised - a wholesome family entertainment movie, a few laughs, well acted.
Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman and all supportng actors are great.
Plot is silly, it doesn't matter for a film like this - fun action, nice locations, soppy bits, fun bits, action bits.
It really isn't the sort of film to dissect and quibble - what is the point ?
It's better made than 70% of new movies, it entertains and is the perfect movie to sit back with popcorn or pizza and forget about your troubles for a bit.
After watching this I sought out the first film and that was a fun romp too.

Like a previous reviewer wrote the gags were not very original however it's still seems like even with the tension created between jjj and Sophie it will all work itself out in the end. The tech girl wasn't as funny as she was in first movie just a bit more strange this do round. So now I have to close out this review seeing as it's the first formal opinion I've ever shared. Forgive me but I like Ken jeong and Dave Bautista so I give them the benefit of the doubt this time they have both come a long way since their beginnings.i don't see the reason to render an opinion and it has to be mean scathing and insensitive when none of us are creators just viewers with opinions like you know what's. I wish I had the talent or fearlessness to put myself out there for all the world to judge.
This the most absurd but I expected it to be this funny and unserious to what actually is happening, in instance of them being tangled in chain above and try to make a joke about password and 2FA, it didn't land how they expected it to be. And the protagonist asks a lot of money or else the will destroy all of the places in the world which is kind of "will never happen" moment because you just know there isn't any unique to the pot like twist coming up. But it is fun to watch if you think 14 years old is going to save the CiA mistake even though she still can't even drive a car. I gave it 4/10 for the fun moments but it is trash.

Most people comment as if they were expecting a cinematic masterpiece. It's an action movie, a comedy, with a great cast, good action scenes and good jokes. You won't get bored and you can take two hours of fun home with you. "Oh, I wasn't surprised, I understood all the plot." Okay, Sherlock, now put down the Chardonnay and relax. It's a great movie and Chloe is lovely.
The plot is certainly quite classic, as expected from a sequel that must repeat the dynamics of the first film so as not to disappoint the fans, but it does so by making the characters grow and in my opinion it does so effectively. I would love to see it in the third chapter.

With my not so little spy ... I know it is supposed to be eye ... but it is funny the way I wrote it too. So no pun intended. I assume you have seen the first movie - which makes sense - but of course the movie will work even if you haven't ... it's just better because you know the characters (the returning ones that is) and will get the relationships ... also you will already know if this will be your type of movie.
Quite a strong start ... and then it does fall down a little bit. I do like the actors that are in this - seeing Flula like this was quite the revelation! Might not be his best "performance", but I still love seeing him in anything (and some who really like him, will like seeing him in nothing .... well upper body that is) ... no pun intended again.
Action is well done and it is a good successor (even if it is quite predictable) ... I like it, you should know if you like it too.

I did not see the first My Spy. It was obviously superior to this one because everyone hates this one so much.
I actually enjoyed this. I liked the humor, and I loved the beautiful choral music.
The story takes place in Rome, where JJ (Dave Bautista) goes after those targeting the Vatican with nuclear weapons.
Sophie (Chloe Coleman) despite her skills, is interested in being a teenager at this point, to J. J.'s disappointment. But she winds up helping out against the horrid Nancy (Anna Faris), out for blood.
Some great stunts, car chases, and martial arts throughout.
Fun, even if it isn't great.

JJ (Dave Bautista) is trying to be a family man and pulls back from his CIA field work. He's training Sophie (Chloe Coleman), but she is turning rebellious. She also has a desperate crush on classmate Ryan. The school choir wins a trip to Italy for competition. Sophie, Ryan, and her best friend Collin are all going. Collin doesn't know that his father David Kim (Ken Jeong) is actually JJ's CIA boss. JJ is the chaperone, but Collin gets taken by bad guys Crane (Flula Borg) and Nancy (Anna Faris). Bobbi (Kristen Schaal) is the expendable tech.
This is the sequel to My Spy (2020). The first movie didn't hit and I really wasn't expecting a sequel. For me, the 2020 movie is passable with likeable actors. It's four years later and the likeability of these actors remain the best aspect of this movie. The girl is four years older and she is in her awkward teen years. It's hard to accept all the sex jokes around her, but the teenage hormones are bubbling. This is not anything great, but it is fine to hang out with these actors.

"My Spy: The Eternal City" was a major letdown. The plot was riddled with clichés and felt predictable from start to finish. The characters were one-dimensional and didn't offer anything new or interesting. The dialogue was uninspired and often cringeworthy, with attempts at humor falling flat.
It felt like the film was trying too hard to be a blockbuster without putting in the necessary effort to create something truly engaging.
The only aspect that stood out was the cinematography. Unfortunately, even the stunning visuals couldn't save this movie from its formulaic approach.
Overall, "My Spy: The Eternal City" was a disappointing experience. It lacked the charm, wit, and excitement that I was hoping for. It's not a film I can recommend.

Four years have passed since the events of the original 'My Spy' and CIA operative JJ has taken a desk job some he can take care of Sophie, who is now fourteen and craving a bit of freedom. When Sophie's school wins a choir competition that will see them win a trip to Italy where they will perform at the Vatican JJ volunteers to be one of the chaperones. He has no idea that the two of them will find themselves caught up in a plot to acquire activation codes for a nuclear weapon which the villain plans to use to detonate under the Vatican if demands aren't met.
If you are after gritty realism then this film is not for you; if on the other hand you want some brain-in-neutral action with plenty of laughs and silliness you could do a lot worse. It may not be as good as the original but I still thought it was rather fun. The central plot may be rather standard but it serves to deliver a succession of action set pieces and humorous moments. Dave Bautista does a fine job as JJ and young Chloe Coleman impresses as Sophie. Kristen Schaal is a lot of fun as Bobbi, the CIA analyst who ends up part of the mission. The film makes good use of various Italian locations. For the most part there is little in the way of offensive material and what there is will probably go over the heads of younger viewers. Similarly the action is more comic than gory. Overall a fun sequel that I'd recommend to fans of the original.

Loved the first film, this one has lost the plot.
I was looking forward to this spoof movie.
If you up for a non-stop swearing, pointless & tasteless so-called comedy, flavored with some stupid & inappropriate jokes,
Story has some nice comic moments, scenery is great in Italy, effect are acceptable, but with 14y old girl as a lead, there is totally unnecessary sexual innuendos and advice, that adds nothing to the move and make is R rated for most parents.
Not sure why this was necessary and also jokes about female bodies, this is not cool in 2024.
After all the expletives were noted, half the script was complete!

I watched the first one a few years ago and altough not a movie that i found "exeptional", it was a perfectly fine familly friendly spy centered movie.
Sophie, the little girl from the first movie is now a high school teenager and because of that she obviously could do a lot more when it comes to action scenes or such.
The plot is a bit generic and cliché, and use every tropes you gonna see in spy/action movies that are for a familly friendly public, including bad guys being corny at times, making unecessary speeches instead of finishing the job, and other things like that. But if you are fine with these tropes in other movies, you should be here too.
Movie definately has its dose of humor and overall has a good balance between action, comedy and familly relationship stuff.
Just like the first, its a movie i had fun watching. If you liked it, you should like this one too. I would definately watch a third one with Sophie now being an adult if they decide to make one in a few years.

Everything that made the first one of these great is missing here. Instead of the warm, beautifully growing relationship between JJ and Sophie, we have two grumpy people who don't like each other and spend most of the 2 hours being mean to one another. Instead of the warmth with Blueberry and Ozzie, we have dark stuff around animals. The nice dynamic JJ developed with his partner is gone, and she's just mean instead of funny.
On top of it, we have misogyny at every corner (wtf were those tampon 'jokes' and the way men control, spy on, and expect things from women for being 'nice guys'? Gross) and some racism thrown in (wtf was that comment about Sophie's natural hair?). Whoever wrote this needs to step out of the 1980s and realise we've moved well TF on from this kind of 'humour'.

What's with all the hate this movie is getting?? Truly I had a blast watching this. I kind of suspect anyone who didn't like it just doesn't like this kind of movie in general, because My Spy: The Eternal City accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It's fun, funny, with explosions and a hefty sprinkling of heart. This isn't a spoiler because it's in one of the promotional clips, but basically here's the test to see if you'll like this movie: Does the idea of Dave Bautista and Ken Jeong getting attacked by dozens of tiny CGI birds fill you with uncomplicated glee? This movie is for you. The star-studded cast delivers lots of banger lines too, some that made my family literally laugh out loud.
They shouldn't send critics that don't like this kind of movie to review this kind of movie, to be real with you. It paints an unfair picture, judging the whole genre instead of judging how well a movie fits into/ adds to that genre.
This movie does ask you to suspend your disbelief. It ISN'T realistic, and that's fine! It isn't trying to be some dissertation on CIA operations. It's a fun family movie full of goofy heists and some sweet father-daughter plot moments that add emotion. If you can let loose and take the movie for what it is, you're going to have a GREAT time.

After four years behind a desk, CIA agent JJ is back in the field... Well kind of sorta. JJ is the chaperone for his teenage step-daughter Sophie's school choir trip to compete at the Vatican in Italy.
"I need you back in the field JJ. I need my number one bull elephant heading this mission." - David Kim Well a student (Collin) is kidnapped and he just happens to be the son of JJ's CIA boss, (David Kim) Now Kim, his Tech, Bobbi, JJ and Sofie are on their own against International terrorists that plan to bomb the Vatican.
This sequel to My Spy is just a really fun sequel with likeable actors, lots of action, and comedy. Great for a family movie night.
Cast - Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Anna Faris, Kristen Schaal, Flula Borg, Craig Robinson.

My Spy: Eternal City, the sequel to 2020's buddy comedy starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman My Spy, is now streaming exclusively on Prime Video. This story reunites JJ and Sophie 4 years after the events of My Spy, and we see that their relationship has changed a bit. JJ is trying to fit into his new role as stepdad and Sophie is not exactly receptive to it. The two travel to Italy together when Sophie's choir group is granted the opportunity to perform in the Vatican and they are met with some unexpected bad guys.
This is a fun family movie that is lighthearted and very funny. I appreciate it when a movie does like take itself too seriously and just focuses on the entertainment aspect and this film is a prime example of doing just that. The comedic genius from Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong was on full display and I absolutely loved the chemistry between Bautista and Coleman. There was only one hiccup and that was some poor editing and awful green screen effects. Luckily, it was only noticeable in one scene, so I won't hold it against them.
My Spy: Eternal City is a great family summer movie and I recommend checking it out on Prime video. If you have not seen the first film in the franchise, My Spy, I recommend checking that one out first (also streaming on Prime).
