I see all the mostly negative reviews of this movie and I'm actually surprised I know it's been done before but so have a lot of themes Andy Garcia can take anything and make it good Gloria Estefan is very good in her role and it's just a pleasant time to be had by all it's like nothing to pre ponder or post ponder but it makes some points and it was fun!!!
Take a beloved movie - force fit, gender swaps, nationality and sexuality to appear inclusive. And at the end of the day - for the political cash grab using nostalgia to gain money.
Literally the Covid - short reunion clip - of the original cast as if their characters had continued was much more entertaining that this.
Add this to the list: Ocean 8 Ghostbusters 2018 Home Sweat Home Alone Etc.
Miss the days movies were made with original ideas, heart and soul.

I am going to start by saying that the original Father of The Bride (1950) with Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor is still my favorite, of course I am a classic film fan and in response to those who think that it is dated...I don't think the sentiment of a loving father who is going to miss his beloved daughter when she leaves the home in marriage is outdated, and if it is...I think that is a sad commentary on our current society. Second confession, I love Steve Martin and I think the version pairing him with Diane Keaton (1991) was comedy gold. And my final confession I have a Latin bias...so I was thrilled to see Andy Garcia back on the big screen especially in a role where he isn't a criminal and I really enjoyed seeing Gloria Estefan. I appreciated that they had Cuban actors playing Cuban roles and Mexican actors playing Mexican roles...and don't think I didn't catch the Latinx commentary.
This is a big Latin take on Father of The Bride and it is set in Miami, the home of our Cuban-American family that is headed by successful architect Billy Herrera (played by Andy Garcia). The old town Miami back drop is spectacular and the home that they chose as the family home "designed and built by Billy" is gorgeous and worth seeing. Another twist in this version of FOTB is the discussion of divorce, the film starts with Billy and his wife in therapy, where they have been for over a year, deciding to get divorced. Like the other FOTB films, the story is told from the father's perspective and this father has a lot coming at him...his wife divorcing him, his beloved daughter marrying and moving to Mexico and no one wanting to do the wedding in the traditional way as he does.
I will say the looming divorce gives this film a far more melancholic feel than the other Father of The Bride films...but I hope that doesn't deter you from giving it a watch. Andy Garcia really carries this film and both his wedding speech and his conversation with his future son-in-law are endearing and well delivered.
There was a little poking fun of the 'instagram generation' around the wedding planner and her ideas about having a flamenco and flamingo wedding...it wouldn't be so sad and funny if it didn't have some truth to it.
My husband's favorite part the latin take on a Daft Punk song.
Not for everyone, but maybe not worthy of all of the disparaging remarks.

The biggest problem with remakes is the lack of originality in changing changing the title and seeing if anyone noticed the story they borrowed from.
This Andy Garcia lead movie is unique enough from the original and Steve Martin remakes to make the case of changing the title to something more original.
I'm a big Andy Garcia, he's always superb. This is the second time I've seen this great actor have you work with an incompetent lead actress, Sophia Coppola being the first, and now Gloria Estefan. The lack of chemistry between him and Estefan is not his fault- she did not seem to connect to the character in general.
Had this movies had an original title, it would probably have had better reviews, but also would not be the money maker it will be because it's associated with Father Of The Bride. Divorced from the title, it works pretty well on its own as a fun and lite comedy/drama.

Liked the actors, but absolutely nothing interesting or engaging happened. No plot to speak of, no humor. Liked the actors, but absolutely nothing interesting or engaging happened. That poor man. What horrible piece of story telling on how to disrespect and ostracize a person into crippling depression until he breaks. Such selfish behavior from so many. Love has enough experiences. Do not watch this movie. Surprised no characters harmed themselves. Dark and ugly movie. But I went into it expecting something light and fun, so take it for what it is.

While it's refreshing to see a Latino makeover of such a familiar franchise turned into a major non-Hallmark 2022 movie release, the challenge remains that the story is still too familiar with its predictable narrative. Though not an expert at light comedy, Andy Garcia steps into the Spencer Tracy/Steve Martin archetypal put-upon father role with surprising ease and has a nice rapport with a severely underused Gloria Estefan. SNL's star impersonator Chloe Fineman seems misused in the scene-stealing wedding planner role. The main problem is just that you can foresee every plot turn a mile away, and the chaotic proceedings feel more contrived as the movie rolls along to its inevitable finish.
I finally said enough and turned it off 30 minutes early. I just couldn't anymore. This movie is boring, predictable, contrived, lacks chemistry between characters, and missing the comedy element that made the first two thrive. A lot of eye rolls on my end due to the "didn't see that coming" moments. Ugh. Just so bad.

I laughed, I cried, I learned a few things - what else can you expect from a movie? In earnest, I haven't seen any of the prior films with Steve Martin, nor do I think I need to. This film can stand on its own and I enjoyed the connection to the Latino experience. Andy Garcia did a great job as always, and I found myself bursting in laughter and shedding a few tears throughout the film.

I thought this was going to be like the Steve Martin version. A little of The father cliches, but mostly funny
But this version has just $&@ all over the dad character. I know a lot of Hollywood loves making dads look bad now,...but this was just really bad.
Yes the dad was inflexible at times. But given his backstory and a spoiled family...he seems like the hero.
The wife has dumped a failed marriage on her husband as the problem. There is zero balance in the extremes of these character ir the plot. And with zero comedy in this show...it angers the audience more than provide relief from the dad hate.
No likable characters here. I was sad because I remember this show being good and this would be a fresh take with a Hispanic take. But the comedic and heart felt experience this title has brought in the past is not revisited here.

If you like Latin culture, Miami views and a good romantic comedy, then see this movie. Love the blend between the Cuban and Mexican influences. The movie is definitely better second half of the film. !Que disfruten!

3.5 out of 5 stars.
Father of the Bride is a pretty fair romantic comedy film that is not a bad remake. It may not have that charm from the last remake. It tries to be fun. It has its talented cast with Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, Isabela Merced, Diego Boneta, and Chloe Fineman.
The plot can be predictable about Cuban american family who daughter is marrying a mexican American family. While the father of the bride is having trouble adjusting to the fast changes.
The humor is okay. It can be cheesy. The film does feel like its running too long. But it sure is a fun film to enjoy.

Look I have great respect for father character, but talk about wrong casting and wrong direction. This remake forgot what made the first and the remake such a good movie. It was the father of bride. The way the daughter acted you would think you want the father to leave the house. This movie lacked emotions, fun, and creativity. Yes it's a remake and everybody know what is going to happen and the original was the best the remake was great because of one guy Steve Martin the third round it lacked everything that made he first two so great. To bad it could have been great but just because you have a great location and you spend money it does not mean that the character of the movie would be good. To bad.
Watch the original, watch the first remake skip this thing called a bad movie.

It lacked the on-going comedic performances from the previous remakes of this franchise. At times it dragged but found it's way back to the audience. Definitely a fun movie for everyone!
I know this is a remake but I have never seen any Father of the Bride movies so I watched this one with a total open mind, and I like it. First of all there's Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan what is not to like about those two.
The story is about a very successful Cuban-American couple, Billy Herrera and his wife Ingrid living in Miami. They are getting a divorce, but when their daughter surprises them with her marriage plans, they decide to keep it secret until after her marriage.
With only a month to prepare, Billy is not ready to give his daughter away to a man he just met. Having to deal with a rushed wedding and a future son-in-law and his extravagant wealthy father who insist on a massive extravagant wedding for his son, pushes the Father of the Bride to the very edge ...and then a hurricane hits Miami the day before the wedding day.
The movie is very enjoyable, has a lot of funny moments and a really good cast... Andy Garcia is a Awesome Father of the Bride.

Hollywood is dead. Brain dead.
It cannot make anything original anymore. Since they ran out of ideas, they resort to remakes, one after the other...
We had the 1950, 1991, 1995 versions of "TFOTB". Now, we have a sanitized version of the same story adapted to a more modern mindset and reflecting current mores and values. And because of it, "TFOTB" sucks, as expected.
Modern life in America is a caricature of what it once was, and everything that is made based on how things should look like feels abysmally stupid, dull and depressing.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from it.

Nothing can compare to the Steve Martin remake, and that's where you go wrong. Don't compare it and take it for what it is. I thought it was entertaining and funny.

This two hour movie was interminable. They tweaked this remake to not only give us the Latino aspect, but added a divorce, a lesbian, lectures about the environment, provided by a wimpy script and terrible acting. Save yourselves and watch anything else.
The movie is a love letter to Miami. I live here and I loved how beautiful it looks in this film. I also have a great fondness for Gloria Estefan and it was fun to see her in this role. I just wish there was a reason for her to sing. All the characters had likable qualities and they learned something about each other. Stayed up late watching the film and quite enjoyed it.

I walked in with an open mind, the Steve Martin one was a remake and I loved it. Not to mention, I love Andy Garcia and Gloria Esteban but this was a waste of time. Not all remakes are bad but this one was. No heart, no humor, no enjoyability. Sad really.

Don't know why people are so mad about this movie. I enjoyed it. It was perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
I'm from Finland and have very little knowledge about Cuban or Mexican culture, but I found the movie entertaining and funny.
I know it's a remake, but who cares. I've probably seen the original on tv in the 90's, but can't really remember anymore.
To be honest, I probably wouldn't have watched it if not for Andy Garcia. I've always liked him. Good thing I watched it though. Andy should do more movies.

This is the first Father Of The Bride movie I've seen and I did enjoy it.
The casting was probably the best part, Andy Garcia was amazing in his role as Father of the family, Adria Arjona was a welcome surprise with the only other film of hers I've seen being Morbius. Isabela Merced as usual was amazing in her role as the younger sister, though I wish she'd had more screentime/storyline to her character. I could definitely see her character being the leading lady in a Father Of The Bride 2 movie with Isabela reprising her role in it.
The story was good, with laughs and humor and kept the viewer invested in it. Did I know what was coming and what would end up happening, well yeah pretty much from the start of the film. But that doesn't make it bad, it did well to make itself unique and different from other films that share the genre.
Though I have to admit I supported most of the father's decisions throughout the film. There were times he went a bit overboard but I did agree with him about preserving tradition etc. Though maybe he and his daughter should have made concessions and come to a compromise that incorporated both what she wanted as well as some of the more traditional stuff as well. By the end they kinda got there at least, so that is something.
One of the best parts of the film was the scene when Isabela Merced uncovers a bowl of popcorn and starts eating it while watching her family drama going on. It brought a smile to my face as I've done the same many a time watching my own family fight.
All in all, a fun enjoyable movie with its own unique twist. A solid 7/10 stars from me and the wish that we'd get to see a second one with Isabela Merced and her character as our leading lady.

While it was well made and the acting was great for what they had to work with, the script was boring and not funny. I gave it to the halfway mark and it just didn't grab me. I saw the original and like 95% of remakes it doesn't hold a candle to the original. Why does Hollyweird have to take great movies and ruin them with a remake. The latin part did not bother me at all. The junk with the wedding planner and her desperate attempt at being "hip" was too annoying.
I can only guess that it all comes together at the end but the journey to get there was not worth it. Everything was fine except the script. The script ruined the whole thing. I am guessing if you are a teen to early 20s you might find this entertaining but if you watched the original you will find this bland and annoying. I would have kicked the "wedding planner" out within 5 minutes of her rambling, or whenever she said listen up boomer...She would have been the one listening as the door slammed behind her.
This is definitely a movie that might appeal to younger audiences but not really to older adults. It tries too hard to bash the old and make the new seem like it is best. What annoys me about movies where divorce of older rich couples is that the wife always talks about how she didn't ask for all the money and yet you never see her shopping at Walmart and just saving the extra. The guy wouldn't have to work so hard if the wife wasn't spending the money. And the "you'll never change" bologna is sad. Why should he change? She accepted what he was when she married him. Anyway, those movie tropes annoy me.

I really enjoyed the new take on this past favorite movie of mine. Loved the Cuban-American family and the casting of Gloria Estefan and Andy García as the parents. I loved the storyline they had of finding their way back to each other through their daughter's wedding planning. They stole the show for me.
