The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge has partnered with Film Independent to award 12 disabled filmmakers with grants to help them develop their short films into episodic series or feature films.

Deadline is reporting that Jon Spaihts, who worked with Denis Villeneuve on the screenplays for the Dune films and penned the Chris Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence space romance drama Passengers, will be making his directorial debut on a film that he will also write. It is a yet-to-be-titled sci-fi thriller and will be produced by Laika’s live-action division. The Oregon-based studio is usually known for their animation work and has been nominated for a number of Academy Awards. Their specialty also lies predominantly on stop-motion animation.

While details are scant at the moment, per Deadline, the new sci-fi thriller will tell “the tale of a woman investigating a mystery that took place during a week she cannot remember.” Spaihts spoke of his directorial debut in a statement that said, “This is an original passion project I’ve been eager to turn to for a while, and I couldn’t ask for better partners.

Jon Spaihts, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of both “Dune” and this year’s sequel “Dune: Part Two,” is set to make his directorial debut on another science fiction spectacle.

Spaihts will team with “Coraline” studio Laika on an original sci-fi thriller, among one of the first live-action movies for the famed animation house.

Spaihts will both write and direct the project, and Laika is shopping the title as a sales package at the Toronto International Film Festival kicking off this week.

The film is still untitled, but it tells the tale of a woman investigating a mystery that took place during a week she cannot remember.

Laurence Fishburne isn’t looking to top himself when it comes to signing up for sci-fi projects like his new movie Slingshot.

The Oscar-nominated actor continues to be among the most in-demand performers in Hollywood and has starred in a wide range of features running the gamut in genre and scope. Hitting theaters this weekend from Bleecker Street is Slingshot, featuring Fishburne as Captain Franks, who leads a multi-year mission to Saturn’s moon Titan to obtain needed natural resources. The series drops on Netflix on Thursday

Charlie Covell’s comedic drama “Kaos” hits Netflix screens on Thursday, Aug. 29, and it’s giving Greek mythology buffs a new adventure to binge, reimagining the Greek gods in a contemporary setting.

The eight-episode series, directed by Georgi Banks-Davies and Runyararo Mapfumo, will all drop at the same time on the streamer.

Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis: “Zeus has long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods. That is until he wakes up one morning and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Neurosis sets in, setting him off on a dangerous, paranoid path. Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming – and starts to see signs of it everywhere.”

On Saturday (August 17), the 45-year-old Passengers actor took to Instagram to share some very rare photos of his son feeding and tending to the animals at their farm in Washington State along with a sweet message celebrating his 12th birthday.

Sci-fi romances that involve some kind of interplanetary expedition don’t really have happy endings, do they? Star Wars, as a franchise, is one of the biggest space operas in existence and it is plagued with doomed romances. Solaris is responsible for the “sad men in space” template. For the most part, the two Dune movies by Denis Villeneuve focused on the love story forming between Paul Atreides and Chani, and by the end of the second film, it seemed like Chani will try to kill Paul. Chris Pratt paid tribute to his late stunt double Tony McFarr in a heartfelt message on social media in which Pratt remembered their time on several movie sets together. McFarr was Pratt’s stunt double on some of the actor’s biggest films, including the “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Jurassic World” franchises. McFarr died May 13 at the age of 47.

“Devastated to hear about the loss of my friend and former stunt double Tony McFarr,” Pratt wrote. “We did several movies together. We golfed, drank whiskey, smoked cigars, and spent endless hours on set. I’ll never forget his toughness. I remember he took a nasty shot to the head (in the title sequence of ‘Guardians 2’) and got several staples in his head came right back to work ready to go again. He was an absolute stud.”

“He was always a gentleman and professional,” Pratt added. “He’ll be missed.

Tony McFarr, a professional stunt performer best known in Hollywood for his work as action star Chris Pratt’s double in the Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises, died in Florida this week. McFarr was 47 years old.

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office in Orlando told The Hollywood Reporter that McFarr died on Monday and that a cause of death is still pending as of Friday morning. His death was also posted on the website of the Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home in Merritt Island, Florida. But, according to a staff member at the funeral home, his obituary was removed at the request of his family.

On Thursday. TMZ reported that McFarr’s mother, Donna, told the outlet that her son’s death at his home in Orlando was “unexpected and shocking.” On Friday, Pratt wrote a message on Instagram mourning the loss of his colleague and friend.

Chris Pratt has taken to Instagram to pay tribute to his former stunt double, Tony McFarr, who died at age 47 on Monday in Orlando, Florida.

The actor said he was “devastated to hear about the loss of my friend and former stunt double. We did several movies together. We golfed, drank whiskey, smoked cigars, and spent endless hours on set. I’ll never forget his toughness.”

Pratt recalled one such instance on the set.

“I remember he took a nasty shot to the head (in the title sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and got several staples in his head – he came right back to work ready to go again. He was an absolute stud. He was always a gentleman and professional.”

Andre Braugher died of lung cancer, his longtime publicist Jennifer Allen has shared, according to the New York Times. The two-time Emmy-winning actor of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street died on Monday this week at the age of 61.

Allen revealed that Braugher was diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago. When news of his death was shared, it was shared that he died following a brief illness.
