Timothy Olyphant is set to join Anya Taylor-Joy in Lucky, an Apple TV+ limited series based on the bestselling novel by Marissa Stapley of the same name.

The series centers on “a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.” Olyphant will play Lucky’s father, John. Jonathan Trooper (Banshee) created the series and will serve as co-showrunner alongside Cassie Pappas. Production is expected to kick off in spring 2025. Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner will produce the series. In addition to starring in Lucky, Taylor-Joy will also executive produce alongside Witherspoon and Tropper.

Netflix revealed updates for its 2025 film slate — including Knives Out 3, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Noah Baumbach’s new George Clooney-Adam Sandler feature — at its annual media day held Wednesday.

During the streaming service’s Next on Netflix presentation at its headquarters in Los Angeles, attendees were treated to previously unseen looks at a number of forthcoming film, TV and game projects, with chief content officer Bela Bajaria highlighting notable releases. Netflix and British docs producer Rogan Productions are to attempt to “connect the long and disturbing chain of events” that led to the disastrous Grenfell Tower fire in London.

The pair are teaming on a Grenfell [working title] doc feature that will air later this year and was revealed last night at the Next on Netflix event in London.

The feature will give a voice to survivors, bereaved families and firefighters, while “tracing the chain of events that led to the disaster,” according to Netflix. In 2017, the Grenfell Tower fire claimed the lives of 72 people and has led to a huge deal of introspection for the past eight years including a major national inquiry.

Netflix UK boss Anne Mensah said last night: “From pure entertainment to the most important stories – this year you will see a number of big British documentary series and films on Netflix UK. These are the important stories that demand to be told.

If you’ve been following The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, you’ve known that one third of The Lonely Island, Jorma Taccone, has been absent for the last few weeks while shooting a movie in Finland. Details of that movie have finally been announced.

Taccone will direct “The Trip,” a thriller and comedy film that stars Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Juliette Lewis, and Timothy Olyphant, it was announced on Tuesday, November 19. Filming is currently taking place in Tampere, Finland and has been ongoing since October 23. Paul Guilfoyle and Keith Jardine also co-star.

This is Taccone’s first feature behind the camera since 2016’s “Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which he co-directed with Akiva Schaffer. For this one he’ll partner with the team behind “The Fall Guy,” David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s 87North production banner, and XYZ Films.

Gareth Evans made a huge impact on 21st century action cinema in 2011 when he wrote and directed The Raid, which introduced the world not only to the fierce Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat, but also to Iko Uwais, who dispatched body after body with brutal efficiency. 2014’s The Raid 2 upped the ante on the violence considerably, letting characters like Baseball Bat Man and Hammer Girl loose and featuring quite possibly the best prison brawl this century.

Netflix is ready to release a thrilling action thriller that promises to stretch the genre’s boundaries. “Havoc,” starring Tom Hardy and directed by Gareth Evans, will give an exciting cinematic experience in 2025.

The film follows Hardy’s character, Detective Walker, on a desperate rescue mission involving the nephew of the city mayor. When a drug deal goes out of control, Walker must negotiate a difficult urban setting to save the politician’s son.

Director Gareth Evans, best known for his work on The Raid, brings his characteristic high-intensity action choreography to the film. In an interview with Empire magazine, Evans emphasized the film’s distinctive approach. “When it comes to a film called Havoc, we deliver on the action front,” remarked the executive producer. But with Tom Hardy, you also get an intensely muscular central performance with real depth.”

Thanks to Empire (via SFFGazette.com), we have a new look at Andor season 2 and the first official shots of Ben Mendelsohn's returning Orson Krennic. The season 1 finale teased the Death Star's construction and this suggests we should expect a deeper dive into how the Empire's greatest weapon came to be.

Also featured are Diego Luna's Cassian Andor and Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma, with the latter being someone we learned a lot more about during Andor's debut season. The magazine has also shared new stills of Cassian piloting what could be a Tie Fighter along with another shot of the villainous Imperial.

There are still several months to go until Andor returns to Disney+, so we're not necessarily expecting these latest reveals to be followed by a trailer (especially as Lucasfilm will likely want to keep the spotlight on Skeleton Crew for the time being).

“The Ritual,” the upcoming exorcism horror in which Al Pacino and Dan Stevens play troubled priests, has sold out for most international territories by XYZ Films.

From director David Midell, the film was written by Midell and Enrico Natale, and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.

XYZ, which has been quietly growing its own releasing arm on top of its sales operations, is planning a U.S. theatrical release in 2025.

Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

In the midst of their press tour for Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut, “Blink Twice,” starring romantic partner Channing Tatum, the duo took a not-so-brief pit-stop at the Criterion Closet to score a bevy of cinematic treats. Many of their choices outlined their shared eclectic taste and emphasized a relationship largely based around a love for films of all kind.

“We’re so excited to be here, this is like a dream come true,” Kravitz said as she and Tatum began their shopping spree. “I grew up in video stores, so this is also just a nice feeling cause that’s not really a thing anymore, sadly.”

Though the video was shot prior to the death of Gena Rowlands and posted on the day the news broke, there’s a serendipitous homage to the late actor, as well her husband and collaborator John Cassavetes.

While Sony’s Spider-Verse movies Madame Web and Morbius both laid eggs at the box office (to put it mildly), another live-action franchise from the studio has been minting money – the Venom films. Despite pretty awful reviews, the first movie made $856 million worldwide. The sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, only made just over $500 million (still a lot of moolah), but that was due to opening during the pandemic (it was actually the third highest-grossing movie of the year). With the third film pretty much guaranteed to make money no matter how it fares with critics, Sony is moving it up slightly on the release calendar, with it now set for October 25th, 2024. The movie also has a new title, Venom: The Last Dance.

This pre-Halloween weekend propelled Five Nights at Freddy’s to a huge opening, and Sony is no doubt hoping to score with horror audiences as well as superhero fans.

Since then, The Hollywood Reporter has put up its own report, which offers a bit more context. Bajaria made the comments at the streaming giant’s press event, Next on Netflix, in which it also unveiled its slate of upcoming films and shows. XYZ Films has just scooped up the US distribution rights for ‘Skyline: Warpath.’ This sci-fi action film, packed with martial arts, is a fresh creation from Liam O’Donnell, known for his work on ‘Beyond Skyline.’ The film shines with stars like Iko Uwais from ‘The Raid’ and Scott Adkins of ‘Undisputed’ fame. Joining them are Louis Mandylor, Randall J. Bacon, and Yayan Ruhain.
